Why Presidency must remain in South till 2031, by Amosun

    • Ex-Ogun governor backs Tinubu for second term
    • Dogara, Okiro: South must complete eight years in power

Former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has backed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 general election.

He said there is a need for Nigerians to observe the country’s power rotation principle in the Presidency.

Like the former governor, erstwhile House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mike Okiro have stated the need for power to remain in the South till 2031.

Amosun argued that after eight years of northern leadership under the late President Muhammadu Buhari, it’s the South’s turn to retain power for another round of four years to complete the region’s eight years.

The former governor and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) spoke yesterday at the Ake Pavilion in Abeokuta, the state capital, as a part of the celebrations marking his 68th birthday.

The celebrations turned out to be a show of his never-slowing political strength as the mini-stadium was filled with his loyalists and associates.

Some of the APC leaders and loyalists at the event included the former Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Lekan Adegbite; the immediate past Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK), Sarafa Tunji Isola; former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Deputy Governor Tunde Lemo; Senator Iyabo Anisulowo; Senator Gbenga Obadara, among others.

Amosun stated that in the interest of the political health of the nation, the power rotation arrangement should be strictly adhered to, not breached.

The former governor also reaffirmed his membership of the APC and contributions to the party in the state as well as the contributions of Aremo Oluesgun Osoba to the development of the Gateway State.

He stressed that when talking of APC structure in Ogun, he and Osoba remain the only foundation members.

Amosun said he would not destroy what (APC) he helped to build in the state.

The former governor applauded President Tinubu’s robust representation of the South, particularly his Southwest roots, stressing the need for Nigerians to respect the rotational arrangement.

He said: “In the interest of Nigeria, we should observe the rotation. The South has been waiting for its turn, and with President Tinubu at the helm, we’re on the right path.

“We’re proud of our heritage, and we won’t let anyone destroy our progress,” Amosun stated in backing President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

“In the interest of Nigeria, we should observe the rotation, in the sense that if the North takes the presidency this time, the South will have to take it the next time. The last president from the North was President Muhammadu Buhari. He did how many years? Eight years.”

“Now, it is our turn in the South, and we have in the South, President Tinubu. Is there now someone representing all of us in Nigeria, primarily, but he’s from where? The Southwest! So, it’s representing all of us in the South. So, it’s indeed a good idea for anybody who loves Nigeria to agree that whatever we are doing, we should respect that rotational arrangement.

“That is why today, just like what I said when we were having our convention that time, not only in the interest of maybe even Asiwaju now or even any of us but in the interest of all of us in Nigeria.

“So, I want to inform all of you: I have read a lot of things, but I want everybody to know if we say A, that is our A; if we say B, it would be B. We told them that we are what we are. In any case, in this Ogun State, how can they talk about APC without talking about Amosun? With all respect to all our leaders and our elders, I think probably the only person who will say in this Ogun State, when we were forming APC, was in the forefront, is Olusegun Osoba. When you take Osoba, who you will take next is me. That is why you do not destroy what you have built.”

Amosun had told his loyalties across the state to remain committed to the APC structure, expressing optimism about President Tinubu’s policy.

Also, prayer sessions were held at his home at Ibara GRA. Amosun also visited some correctional facilities in Abeokuta, Ilaro, Sagamu, and Oba, where he shared foods and other items with the inmates.

Speaking last night on a national television programme, Dogara urged northern politicians to allow the South to complete its eight-year tenure.

He was responding to the ambition of former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to run for the presidency in 2027.

He said: “Atiku, like every other Nigerian, has the right to run for office. But for the sake of fairness and equity, the South should be allowed to complete their eight-year tenure after which power would return to the North.”

The former Speaker also talked about the killings in the North, saying: “This issue is something that the Christians and Muslims can solve. They should work together and resolve this matter. The overall interest should be the progress and betterment of this nation. We are one, and we should strive for peace and progress.”

Also, Okiro said no President in Nigeria’s history has governed with so much courage as the President has exhibited.

The former IGP told reporters on Saturday evening in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, that President Tinubu came to power in the midst of challenges and has been tackling them gradually.

Okiro was in Ibadan to endorse President Tinubu for a second term and to inaugurate a support group, Grassroots Mobilisation for Tinubu (GMT).

He explained that President Tinubu’s policies in every sector have been yielding fruit after taking some critical decisions.

Okiro assured fellow Nigerians that the nation would be much better by the end of President Tinubu’s tenure.

The former IGP recalled that the legacies and antecedents of Tinubu when he was governor of Lagos State were enough to show his stuff and what the country should expect by the end of eight years.

Okiro said: “The legacies he left in Lagos are still there. As President, he has been governing with courage. No other president in Nigeria has ever been bold to govern this way.

“He took critical decisions from subsidy removal to various others. It was harsh on Nigerians at first, but all is gradually taking shape and yielding positive results now.

“Nigerians should remain very patient and support him for a second term. I am confident that he would have taken Nigeria to where it ought to be at the end of his second term.”

As a former police boss, Okiro assessed the level of insecurity in the country.

He expressed optimism that it would soon be over, praising the President for the efforts made so far in tackling the challenges.

Okiro, who led the nation’s police force from 2007 to 2009, spoke on the giant strides recorded in the area of security in Lagos State under Tinubu’s watch.

The former IGP recalled that he met Tinubu as governor of Lagos State and could boldly say that Asiwaju’s security architecture accounted for the peaceful atmosphere enjoyed in Lagos today.

“Insecurity is an ill-will that does no one any good, irrespective of age, gender, or status. We must commend the President for efforts so far.

“I am optimistic that with the ongoing efforts, insecurity will soon be reduced to the barest minimum if not totally wiped out,” he said.

Okiro, who is also the Maradin Hausawa of Ibadan, paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Sarkin Sasa in Ibadan.

On his entourage were Northern Youth and Elder’s Awareness Forum National Coordinator Mahmud Sani Yerima; Northwest Zonal Coordinator Umar Sani Nalema, as well as Alhaji Isa Bawa Isa, Alhaji Muhammad Shehu, and Alhaji Abdullahi Ahmad.

  • Arms stockpile: Group urges ONSA to probe Amosun, police commissioner

The Committee for the Protection of People’s Mandate (CPPM) has urged the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to investigate the arms stockpile allegations against former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

It said Amosun and Commissioner of Police in Ogun State Mr. Bashir Makama should be invited, questioned and prosecuted, if found culpable.

A report by Premium Times had on June 24 claimed that Amosun surrendered 1,000 AK47 rifles, four million bullets 1,000 bulletproof vests and one armoured personnel carrier (APC) stockpiled at the Oke Mosan Government House for an extended period of time.

The civil society organisation (CSO) wondered why the ONSA was yet to comment on allegations.

The ONSA’s silence “on this national security matter is worrisome and unacceptable,” CPPM said in a statement to The Nation yesterday.

The statement signed by its National Coordinator, Nelson Ekujumi, raised eight questions, which the group said was bedeviling the arms saga.

“Where were these arms and ammunitions procured from? When were these arms and ammunition procured? What were the quantity procured and their specifications?

“When was part of the Government House, Oke Mosan, converted to an armoury? The Ogun State Ministry of Works, Housing and Physical Planning must be called to tender evidence.

“According to security regulations, is the armoury a legally approved and recognised armoury by the Federal Government?

“After taking possession of the arms and ammunitions from the governor, did the Commissioner of Police notify the Inspector General of Police (IGP) immediately and accordingly?” the CPPM queried.

But Amosun, in a rejoinder released by his media aide, Rotimi Durojaiye, on June 27, described the allegations of arms stockpile as laughable.

Makama also faulted the allegation during a telephone interview with The Nation.

According to Durojaiye, no AK47 rifle was handed over to the police on May 28, the day the former governor was disarmed as part of handing over formalities.

Explaining how the state government acquired the weapons and had an armoury, he said all necessary approvals were gotten, a due process followed, adding that a security parley was first convened, which birthed the Ogun State Security Trust Fund (STF) under the leadership of a former Nigerian National Security Adviser.

The statement added: “The Amosun administration sought help from then-President Goodluck Jonathan-led Federal Government. First, we sought and got approval to set up “OP MESA” for Ogun State. We followed this up with the specialised QRS Unit. We committed substantial funds into the procurement of hard and software and a myriad of security assets to decisively combat our security challenges.

“We got all necessary approvals from the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) to procure the 13 units of Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), the 1000 units of AK47 rifles, two million rounds of ammunition,1000 units of bulletproof vests and 500 bulletproof helmets and other security communication gadgets.

“Ogun State not only got approval to import these essential assets, the federal administration under President Jonathan gave all requisite approvals to assist the state. The Federal Government, through the Office of NSA, issued the state the End User Certificate Serial Number 000001123 dated March 5, 2012.”

  • Amosun: Allegations of arms stockpile, surrendering laughable

Former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has described as laughable, allegations he stockpiled firearms before the general elections and hurriedly handed them over to the police a day to handover.

Amosun’s reaction was contained in a rejoinder released by his media aide, Rotimi Durojaiye.

An exclusive report by online news site Premium Times had on Tuesday stated that Amosun surrendered 1,000 AK47 rifles, four million bullets

1,000 bulletproof vests and one armored personnel carrier (APC) he allegedly stockpiled at the Oke Mosan Government House for an extended period of time.

But, Police Commissioner Bashir Makama faulted the allegation during a telephone interview with The Nation.

According to the statement released by Durojaiye on Wednesday morning, no AK47 rifle was handed over to the police on May 28, the day the former Governor was disarmed as part of handing over formalities.

The statement reads: “It is rather interesting and ironic that a routine, bona fide and patriotic disposition of Amosun has been so savagely twisted in a premeditated effort to stand logic on its head. It is important to clarify that not a single AK47 rifle was handed over at the event.

“Senator Amosun would have loved to ignore this report for the simple reason that it is a matter for the remit of the police and security agencies. But, that course of action will appear disrespectful to well-meaning stakeholders and inquirers on the matter. Secondly, the good people of Ogun State and Nigerians at large deserve to know the exact circumstances of the handing-over of these security items.

“It is important to stress that this was not the first time that Senator Amosun, whilst in office as governor and former chief security of Ogun State would be handing over security assets to the police. The particular exercise of May 28, 2019, was done openly in the full glare of the public and the media to ensure accountability, guarantee transparency and judicious use of the assets.

“In May 2011, when Senator Amosun assumed office, the biggest challenge that confronted Ogun State was insecurity. Political assassinations, unnatural and unexplained deaths were prevalent. In Ogun East for instance, which comprised of nine of the 20 LGAs at the time, the entire business and financial institutions architecture had become comatose as no bank or such institutions could open for business in the entire senatorial district.

“Cultism, kidnapping for ransom, violent crime and tertiary institutions’ related criminality stank to high heavens. Ogun West was totally ravaged by cross border banditry, unbridled smuggling and economic sabotage. Ogun Central, though relatively calmer, had its fair share of the very low security index that our state had sunk at the time.”

It added: “No resident, in good conscience, could sleep at night with two eyes closed. In the World Bank Ease of Doing Business, 2010, Ogun State was ranked as Number 35 out of 36 as industries and corporations fled the state in droves…”

Explaining how the state government acquired the weapons and had an armoury, he said all necessary approvals were gotten, a due process followed, adding that a security parley was first convened, which birthed the Ogun State Security Trust Fund (STF) under the leadership of a former Nigerian National Security Adviser.

“The Amosun administration sought help from then President Goodluck Jonathan-led Federal Government.

The Federal Government through the Office of NSA issued the State the End User Certificate Serial Number 000001123 dated March 5, 2012.”

Noting the strict procedures for purchase, handling, storage and documentation of security merchandise, Amosun said they were satisfied that extant approvals, regulations and protocols were observed and complied with in this instance.

It added: “Without going into the details and thereby breaching conventions, suffice to say categorically that the AK47 rifles were supplied directly to the Nigeria Police, Ogun State Command. The rest of the merchandise were securely kept in the approved designated armoury within the Government House precincts under police surveillance as it obtains in most Government Lodges, to guarantee exclusive use of the materials in Ogun State.

“The suggestion that the security assets were quickly handed over to the police in order that the new administration will not know about it is laughable because the current Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, was the main supplier of some of the assets in question, notably, the APCs.”

  • Abiodun inaugurates committee to review appointments of 75 coronet Obas by Amosun

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has inaugurated the Chieftain Review Committee constituted to look into the upgrade and appointments of 75 coronet Obas by former Governor Ibikunle Amosun in the twilight of his administration.

The committee is chaired by the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle.

Other members of the committee are the Osile of Oke Ona Egba, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso; Dagburewe of Idowa, Oba Yinusa Adekoya; Elepe of Epe,  Sagamu Oba Adewale Osiberu; Aro of Egbaland Chief Yinka Kufile, a former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and   Chieftaincy Affairs Mr. Babatunde Oyeti and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Lanre Osota.

Abiodun assures that his administration would not allow any form of assault on the traditional institution or its value.

The governor, who spoke at the inauguration of the committee at his Oke-Mosan Governor’s Office, Abeokuta, said his government places a very high premium on traditional institution and acknowledged the invaluable roles and contributions it plays in promoting good governance at the grassroots.

He decried the unprecedented approval, appointment and upgrade of some chiefs and Baales to coronet Obas, which generated reactions from the traditional institution and members of the public, adding that the setting up of the committee was to address the alleged anomalies.

“It will be recalled that the last administration approved the appointments and upgrade of some monarchs at the tail end of their administration, notable among these appointments was the upgrade of some baales to coronet Obas, which is unprecedented in the history of our traditional institution in the state.

“The setting up of this committee should not be seen as an exercise to score cheap political points or witch-hunt anyone, but rather should be seen as a token of the seriousness our administration will continue to ascribe to the traditional institution,” he said.

Abiodun, however, added that his administration would ensure that all chieftaincy matters follow due process and the extant laws, while also placing high premium on chieftaincy matters and looking into the welfare of the traditional institutions.

In his response, Oba Olugbenle said the committee would do a thorough job by being fair and just, adding that members would go back to the traditional institution and the people to educate  them that government was not out to score cheap political points or on a revenge mission but to put things in their right perspective.

  • Gun running: NDF calls for immediate arrest of Amosun, asks Ortom, Ishaku to submit arms to FG

The National Democratic Front (NDF) has called for the immediate arrest of former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun for alleged gun-running and abating terrorism in the country.

Revelation emerged recently that  few hours to the end of his reign as Ogun State helsman, embattled Governor Ibikunle Amosun contacted the state’s Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama, confessing that he had thousands of arms and millions of ammunition in store at a secret armoury in Government House, and that he had decided to hand them over to the police.

Reacting to the shocking development, NDF said the governor should be picked up and prosecuted for sponsoring unrest.

Addressing newsmen on Wednesday, Bolaji Abdukadir, Secretary General of NDF also called on other Nigerian governors who are still habouring criminals and weapons to submit same immediately .

The group specically called on Benue State Govermor, Samuel Ortom, his Taraba counterpart, Darius Ishaku and others to turn in their weapons for their own good.

    The statement reads in full.

Gentlemen of the press, it has been more than 24 hours since Nigerians were first assaulted by news that the immediate past governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun surrendered 1000 automatic assault rifles and 4 million rounds of ammunition to the state’s commissioner of police shortly before he left office. We had waited this long in the hope that he would step forward to refute the story and prove that he was wrongly accused of this heinous crime against the country.

Permit us to digress a little to put this development in the proper context and perspective. According to the Nigeria Police Force, Ogun state has 7,107 police officers. Although the inventory of the Police is not made public, it is safe to extrapolate that there should be about one AK47 rifle for ever other seven police officer. The implication is that Amosun’s armoury effectively had more firearms than the Ogun State Police Command and at least ten times more ammunition than the command has in its inventory.

If that is not scary enough, going by the 2006 population census, Amosun kept enough bullets to kill the entire 3,751,140 citizens of the state with enough left to kill the entire population of a local government area in any neighbouring state. Knowing the kind of havoc that can be wreaked by a team of robbers with only one AK47 rifle and 10 bullets and assuming 4 rifles are allowed to each team with 2000 bullets each, Amosun’s illegal armoury will effectively leave Nigeria with 250 marauding gangs of robbers, enough to overwhelm the combined efforts of all security agencies. This is treason!

We must note, according to the report, that Amosun only cunningly presented the weapons to the police commissioner because he did not want his successor to discover them. Had his preferred candidate won the weapons he would have kept the armoury concealed and they would have continued to ease the weapons into circulation to destabilize Nigeria in their bid to frustrate the government of President Muhammadu Buhari. The excuse that the deadly consignment was procured for distribution to security agencies in the state is patently false because they would have been handed over long before his anointed candidate lost the elections.

The National Democratic Front (NDF) is eager for the federal government to get to the bottom of the weapon cache found with Amosun. It is pertinent to find out how he was able to ship such large consignment into the country without being found out, which could also suggest that there could be a company secretly manufacturing death in the country. The investigation must unveil the extent of collusion in the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigerian Custom Service, if any. It is not likely that such large consignment could have been ferried around without the knowledge of these law enforcement agents. Where they are able to prove that they were unaware then a case of dereliction of duty must be opened against them.

We are concerned that for Amosun to have kept an inventory of 1000 rifles and 4,000,000 bullets, a larger number of the hardware would have fallen into the wrong hands. This explains the proliferation of light weapons that are in part responsible for the security breaches across the country. It is necessary to verify how much of these weapons he originally ordered for shipping into the country and how many of them he lost in transit, how many he has issued out prior to the election and the people he gave the weapons to.

Our concern is that Ibikunle Amosun is not alone in perpetrating acts that have put guns and bullets on our streets to make the country unsafe. In the past, Mr. Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue state was named by captured militias as the one arming and funding them. His neighbour, Mr. Darius Ishaku of Taraba state named in a similar fashion. Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike has been linked with not only arming militants with deadly weapons but also kitting them in military uniform. Former governor Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari of Zamfara state was linked to the birth of the so called banditry that has turned the state into a killing field while his counterpart in Borno, Kashim Ibrahim Shettima had a relationship that tolerated Boko Haram.

With the exposure of Amosun as gunrunner, NDF has been vindicated in its earlier insistence that serving and former governors are responsible for the current widespread insecurity in the country and that dealing with them is the key to restoring security to the country. They unleashed this hardship on the country in their desperation to cling onto power or to ensure that they continue ruling their respective states by installing proxies as successors. This is why we believe that the discovery in Ogun state is nothing but the tip of the iceberg. More confounding revelations await the nation once the bold step is taken to investigate sources of weapons that are being used to torment Nigerians across the land.

NDF is therefore demanding that the Federal Government immediately order that Senator Ibikunle Amosun be taken into custody for further investigation. The federal government must expand the investigation to include other states where the governor or former governor has been named as sponsoring militias or militants while such individuals are asked to surrender all the arms and ammunitions in their warehouses and armouries. It is our humble view that this should be treated as a national emergency and if it becomes expedient that a state of emergency is declared to counter this threat so be it, the affected states should be placed under lockdown until all illicit firearms are mopped up and recovered.

In the meantime, we are sending a strong message to all the identified serving and past governors that irrespective of whether the federal government acts or not, we are giving them a 7-grace to turn in all the weapons in their custody while also ordering those to whom they have issued weapons to return them for surrender to security agencies like Amosun did. A failure to submit the inventory in their illegal armouries will lead to citizens will declaring civil disobedience against them. We have gotten to the crossroads where we have decided to take our fate into our own hands in the face of these blood sucking demons that we call governors.

  •  Ogun sets up committee to review appointment of 75 Obas by Amosun

The Ogun State government, on Friday, set up a committee to review the appointment, installation and promotion of traditional rulers in the state, carried out by the out-gone governor, Ibikunle Amosun, in the twilight of his administration.

A total of 75 people were appointed and installed as coronet Obas by Amosun across  the state and this has continued to elicit condemnation, even from the state’s House of Assembly, which passed a resolution suspending the installed monarchs on the grounds that their appointment didn’t follow due process.

Foremost businessman, kingmaker and politician, High Chief Alani Bankole, for instance, condemned Amosun’s installation of the 75 Obas in one swoop, describing the action as “pure madness.”

He said, that, a governor is not elected to disrupt the social and cultural system of a people, lamenting that even in a community where the residents were less than 200, Amosun, allegedly, appointed an Oba there, wondering the rationale behind such decision.

Bankole, who is the father of the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, noted that as a kingmaker, he has a duty to promote, protect and defend the sanctity and sacredness of the culture and traditions of Egba people, added that the incident was an abnormality.

However, in a statement by the newly appointed Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, Kunle Somorin, and made available to The Nation, the state government stated that the Review Committee comprises His Royal Majesty Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland (chairman); His Royal Highness, Oba Yinusa Adekoya, the Dagburewe of Idowa; His Royal Highness, Oba Adewale Osiberu, the Elepe of Epe, Sagamu; High Chief Yinka Kufile, the Aro of Egbaland; Babajide Oyeti, former Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs; and Lanre Osota, the current Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, who will serve as the secretary to the committee.

The Committee’s Terms of Reference are to identify all the Obas and Chiefs whose appointments or promotions fall within the review period as contained in the recent resolution of the Ogun State House of Assembly and determine on a case-by-case basis, whether such appointment or promotion is in accordance with due process and extant laws of Ogun State.

Others are to identify and address any other issue that the committee may consider relevant to its assignments and make appropriate recommendations as deemed necessary to the government.

  • Monarch backs Ogun Assembly on 75 Obas

A monarch, Oba Ebenezer Akinyemi, has thrown his weight behind the recent nullification of the appointment of 76 monarchs in Ogun State.

The affected monarchs were appointed between February and May 28 by former Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

The Ogun State House of Assembly led by its Speaker, Hon Suraju Ishola Adekunbi, on May 31 passed a resolution nullifying all appointments and promotions of traditional rulers in the state by the immediate past administration.

Speaking with The Nation, Oba Akinyemi, who is the Eselu of Iselu in the Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, said the sacking of the  monarchs was in the best interest of the traditional institution in the state.

He, however, observed that the Assembly should have consulted well the prescribed traditional authorities on the procedure to be adopted on the matter.

‘’ The power to recommend promotion as coronet monarch or oba resides in the traditional councils and paramount rulers. The requirement is that a letter of request would have been written to the council that a community headed by a baale (village head) is in need of an oba (monarch). The council in turn would consider and recommend the request to the appropriate ministry for approval and installation.

‘’For example, in my own area, there was no letter of request to the traditional council, or prescribed traditional authority, yet the immediate past state government upgraded the baales to monarchs. That’s an embarrassment to the obaship institution.

‘’The power to recommend the upgrade of a stool has been delegated to the traditional council and that means that the state government which delegates the power should not have exercised it without first withdrawing the delegated power from the prescribed traditional leadership in the affected community.’’

Oba Akinyemi described as untrue the accusation of betrayal being peddled against Speaker Adekunbi for leading other lawmakers to sack the controversial monarchs.

‘’Speaker Adekunbi is not a betrayer. He is a good son of Yewaland and patriotic indigene of the state.

  • Community association greets Abiodun

The Arepo Central Community Development Association (ACCDA), an umbrella development group comprising about 20 estates and communities in Arepo, has congratulated Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and his deputy Mrs. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, as they assume the mantle of leadership of the Gateway State.

The ACCDA prayed that their “administration and tenure in office will usher Ogun State into its greater greatness”.

A statement by its President, Prince Kehinde Adeyemo, said the election of the duo was a positive development and a big relief to the communities and citizens who have, in the last eight years, suffered lack of inclusive governance and poor infrastructural growth.

ACCDA hailed Abiodun on his victory despite huge opposition. It urged him not to forget his electoral promises, which centered on transparency, development, inclusiveness and good governance, to fast-pace growth in the state rather than an “arrogant concentration of infrastructure in one region” of the state.

Read Also: Abiodun: New dawn, new challenges in Ogun

Adeyemo noted the plight of border communities like Arepo, stressing that the only access road which links the community to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has completely collapsed and become unmotorable, having being abandoned for over eight years and remains a death trap.

“Though the road was said to have been awarded since 2006 to First August Construction Company during the first term of former Governor Ibikunle Amosun, there has been no efforts to mobilise the contractor to site, while the former governor turned deaf ears to all pleas by the Arepo community,” he noted.

The president added the association had made several efforts, levying themselves and making monetary contributions to fix the road, not much had been achieved as the road requires government attention with holistic reconstruction.

The road was built by former Governor Gbenga Daniel 15 years ago and has since gone into disrepair. The association president lamented that Arepo Community, which boasts of Journalists Estate, the first of its kind in Africa, and the whole of the world, has, rather than attract the attention and care of the state government, been carelessly and recklessly abandoned by an “unlistening governor”.

  • Monarch urged to serve with sincerity

Former Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun has advised the Osobia of Makun-Omi, Oba Kazeem Adesina Salami of Arinlu Quarters to see his appointment as a call to greater duty and responsibility for his people, even as he urged him to use his wealth of experience to serve his people.

Amosun gave the advice at the installation and presentation of staff of office to the new oba at Makun-Omi Park in Ogun Waterside East Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

  • Amosun has done well for Ogun, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday declared Governor Ibikunle Amosun has done well for himself and Ogun State.

He spoke during inauguration of a coterie of projects in Ogun State.

Buhari argued given the level projects executed in the state by the Governor, Amosun planned his exit from government.

The President made this known after inaugurating the Ogun State Television (OGTV) ultramodern studio; the 250-bed multi-specialty tertiary Hospital at Oke-Mosan; Adire Mall; Judicial Complex and the 10,000-seater capacity Amphitheatre of the Abeokuta City Centre  – all in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

Buhari, who arrived Abeokuta in a Presidential chopper marked NAF 540 touched down at Archade Ground, State Secretariat, Oke – Mosan at 10:18am and was received by the quartet of Amosun, Governors Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos); Kayode Fayemi ( Ekiti) and Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo).

Addressing the gathering at the judiciary complex, Buhari described the projects otherwise called legacy projects as “first class” and hailed Amosun for his performance in office.

Buhari said: “I think he has prepared for this governorship seat, he prepared himself for it, he has put infrastructure that will last.

“I congratulate you for having the foresight and saving enough resources to make sure that  your  footprint remains  permanent, very clever person. Thank you very much.

“The infrastructure you took me through, the flyovers, the hospital and this complex [Judicial Complex], they are first class. I think you have done well for yourself and Ogun State,” Buhari remarked.

He also congratulated Amosun on his election into the Senate, describing the Senate as an impartial arm of the government and expressed the confidence that he would get a full support from Amosun in the Senate.

He said: “The Senate, being the highest decision making body of the country, is so patriotic and pragmatic. In the sense, for example, Bayelsa has eight local governments, Kano has 44 local governments and you try to check the population and yet in the Senate they are equal, I think this is impartial, very, very much impartial so in the Senate.

”I think he (Amosun) can continue to serve not only Ogun state, but the whole country.

“I am very pleased that I have been in his good books at least publicly, so, in the Senate where he is going to seat , I believe where he is going to seat for four years and I am going to remain, God willing for four years as the President, I will automatically assume that he will support me.

“Thank you I think that the way he has named those projects and the publicity he gave them   every person will see the legacy projects being commissioned today.”

Dignitaries at the inauguration of some of the projects included Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole; the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo; former legal Adviser of All Progressives Congress, Muiz Banire and some traditional rulers in the state

Amosun said the new 15-courtroom Judicial Complex would serve as the base or headquarters for the High Court, replacing the existing High Court Complex in Isabo, which is over forty years old.

The Governor said the complex was designed to cater for both official functions and other contemporary needs of everyone working in the complex.

He said: “There are adequate spaces for a clinic, restaurants, creche, drivers’ pool, warehouses and workshops.

“For us and for the good people of Ogun State, a great journey of eight years will come to an end at midnight of Tuesday 28th May, 2019.

“Even as we prepare to bow out of office, our desire to continue to contribute our quota to the socio-economic development of our dear State remains undiluted.”
