“This will not be a comfort zone for cultists, kidnappers and robbers. This is a warning signal. Whoever you are, once you are caught to be a cultist, you are going to face the full wrath of the law. The provision of law and order is my number one priority as the governor.”

    Woman killed in Ogun

A mother of three has been hacked to death by herdsmen after they allegedly gang-raped her on the farm at Oja-Odan community, Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Mrs. Balogun was said to have gone to harvest cassava at the weekend when the assailants accosted her.

The Coordinator, Ketu Advancement Front (KAF), Kunle Abiose, appealed to Governor Ibikunle Amosun to secure the lives and property of residents.

He said the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the people and herdsmen last year has not curbed the attacks.

Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi said Mrs. Balogun’s remains were found in the bush and there was no evidence to show she was killed by herdsmen.

Amosun: Daniel’s concession of assets criminal

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has said the concession of the state’s properties by former Governor Gbenga Daniel’s administration was “criminal and sheer stealing”.

Some of the government’s assets and properties concessioned by the Daniel administration included Oduduwa House (Victoria Island); Apoje Farms (Ijebu – Igbo); Gateway Holdings; Gateway Hotels; Gateway Trailers Parks, among others.

The governor said nothing depicts the ill-advised frittering away of collective wealth better than the concessioning of the Oduduwa House, Victoria Island, Lagos, at a give-away price for a period of 65 years to a 35-year-old daughter of the ex-governor’s friend.

Amosun said this while answering questions from the two-man panel at the political debate organised by the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

At the debate was the former Group Managing Director of the Gateway Holdings, Gboyega Isiaka, who initiated, coordinated and supervised the processes leading to the concessioning.

The governor said sales and concession as a measure to rejuvenate the state’s moribund or less viable properties are not new and bad in themselves.

He said the manner and terms of condition of the concession under the Daniel administration was reprehensible, callous and wasteful, hence his administration’s resolve to reverse such decision in its first year in office.

Isiaka, who is the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said he has no regret regarding the concessioning arrangement, adding that given the same scenario today, he would go for concessioning.

According to him, he is yet to see a better solution to the concession option proffered as the bail out for the state’s non functioning assets that were accumulating liabilities to the government at the time.

Amosun’s group alleges sale of PVCs

The Senator Ibikunle Amosun Campaign Organisation (SIACO) has raised the alarm on the alleged buying of voter cards in Ogun State.

In a statement by its Chairman, Media & Publicity Committee, Femi Sowoolu, the group said: “It is very important to note that the act of purchasing Permanent Voter Cards from potential voters is illegal and have the potential of compromising the electoral process.

“It is equally a provocative act capable of undermining the freedom of choice of the voters. We, therefore, call on security agencies to investigate the act and bring the perpetrators to book. That is the only thing that can ensure we have a credible, peaceful and free elections in our state.

“We also affirm that we are in possession of credible evidence confirming that APC posters, banners and billboards are being removed, defaced and destroyed by criminal elements in certain parts of the state. In some instances, these campaign materials are being replaced with that of other political party candidates in a provocative manner.

“We must make note that while any such purchased PVC’s may not be transferable, the intention of those buying them off the original owners is to reduce the votes in the opposition strongholds and improve the chances of their own party at the polls.”

  • Amosun : I’m not afraid of Osoba, SDP

Amosun : I’m not afraid of Osoba, SDP

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun said yesterday that he was not “jittery” about former Governor Olusegun Osoba and his prediction that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) would garner about 500,000 votes for its governorship candidate, Senator Akin Odunsi, in the February 28 poll.

Amosun wondered what “magical stunt” Osoba wanted to pull to enable SDP win half a million votes in the state when it was obvious that he or his party do not command such support.

He challenged the ex-governor to name the party’s presidential candidate.

The governor said the changes made in lives and communities in the last 43 months coupled with the facelift of the state would ensure his re-election.

Amosun, who spoke through the Director of his campaign organisation, Bode Mustapha, at a briefing in Abeokuta, the state capital, said he was drawing the world’s attention to Osoba’s boast of 500,000 votes.

According to him, some politicians were capable of playing sundry “tricks”, hence the alarm so that the “forthcoming general elections are not rigged by anybody or party”.

He said: “What kind of mysterious, magical stunt does Chief Osoba have under his hat that will automatically produce a half-million votes out of nothing, when the world knows that neither he nor his party possesses the support to command even a fraction of such votes from any ward in the state.

“Ideally, the former governor should be patient enough to test his popularity at the polls.

“Here is a party, the SDP that could not even garner marginal support from its campaign at the Itoku Market among other parts of the state capital. Perhaps there are high and mighty plans underhand to rig these elections.”

Amosun promised that the new Local Council Development Areas(LCDA) proposed by his administration would be created after next month’s elections.

According to him, the LCDAs would be in full operation on or before May 30 as necessary steps had been taken for their creation.

The governor, who made this known yesterday at his campaign tour of Yewa North Local Government Area, said financial constraint accounted for why the planned LCDAs creation had not been effected.

He said his administration planned  to create about 30 LCDAs  in addition to the existing 20 local governments.

Amosun said: “We have concluded plans on the creation of the local council development areas. It would have come before today, but due to some hitches, which is mainly, finance. But I can assure you now that we are more than ready.

“Most states have like 30, some are 40 and you need to see these states, they are half of Ogun State.

“To enable our people  benefit more from the good governance we are witnessing now in the state, it is very important that we create the council area.

“I can’t say off hand now how many we plan to create but I can tell you that we will have something around 50 altogether after creation.

“We would have done it now, but some people may say it is politically-motivated, I want to assure you that by March 1, we will announce the names of the local council areas because I  have the assurance that by the special grace of God and with the support of our people, I will return to office to continue the good work I have started.”

    How Amosun’s running mate emerged

IT is no longer news that Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has picked Mrs. Yetunde Onanuga as his running mate for the February 21 governorship elections in the state.

A surprise pick from the array of prominent politicians and associates who jostled for the slot, Onanuga’s choice according to sources, was informed by the need to strike a delicate balance in the sharing of two most powerful elective positions, in addition to settling for someone with little or no political experience that can rock the boat of the administration.

Until her nomination by the governor, Onanuga was a Director of Finance and Administration in the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment.

If the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) wins the election, Onanuga would succeed Prince Segun Adesegun, who has defected to the Social Democratic Party alongside a faction of the APC led by a former governor of the state, Chief Olusegun Osoba.

Sources disclosed that Onanuga’s choice was a political masterstroke by the governor based on the former civil servant’s lineage by birth and marriage to Ijebu Ode and Ijebu Igbo, two major towns that are very strategic in the political equation of the state.

From Aparaki, Ijebu Igbo in Ijebu North Local Government Area of the state, Onanuga is married to Chief Giwa Onanuga from Ijebu- Ode Local Government Area.

She holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business Administration from the Lagos State Institute of Science and Technology and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the Ogun State University, Ago Iwoye.

“When our people see commissioners, head of service, permanent secretaries and others clearing refuse, they will know how serious we are on enforcement of environmental laws, rules and regulations.”

The governor urged the people to comply with environment laws and stop dumping refuse in unauthorised places.

He said the state would deploy environment marshals to arrest and prosecute offenders.
