  • Danfo driver jailed one month for stealing retired police officer’s wallet

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday sentenced the driver of a commercial bus, Obinna Obasi, to one month imprisonment for stealing a retired police officer’s wallet containing N33, 000 and 20 dollars.

    Magistrate Ope Agbe convicted Obasi, 36, following his plea of guilty to a one-count charge of stealing, contrary to Section 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    He said the devil pushed him to steal the wallet.

    Earlier, prosecuting Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji, who reviewed the facts of the case, said Obasi committed the offence on 28 August, 2018 at Chevron roundabout, Ajah, Lagos.

    He said Obasi drove his Volkswagen T4 bus with Reg. No LSD 61 XT dangerously and hit the complainant’s Lexus SUV, causing it damage.

    The convict agreed to follow the complainant to his panel beater and repair the SUV, following which the complainant told him to get in the back seat of vehicle.

    They drove to the panel beater’s workshop, but as soon as they got there, Obasi told the complainant that he was going to the bank to withdraw money to pay the panel beater.

    He left and did not return.

    When the complainant checked his vehicle, he discovered that his wallet containing N33, 000, $20, his driving license, Voters Card, Retired SPO Identity Card, and three Automated Teller Machine cards were missing.

    Obasi was subsequently arrested by the Ajah Police Division, Lagos.

  • Landlord ‘removes tenant’s door, steals goods’

    A landlord, Adekunle Santos, who allegedly removed the door of his tenant’s shop and carted away goods valued at N994,850, was on Monday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates Court in Lagos.

    Santos, 63, of No. 1, Santos Avenue, Abule-Egba, Lagos, is standing trial before Mrs A. M. Davies on a four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, damage and breach of peace.

    Prosecuting Inspector Emby Ingobo alleged that Santos and unknown accomplices, conspired and committed the offences at about 4pm on May 23, at his residence.

    Ingobo said: “Santos, in order to prevent his tenant Esther Demola, a hair stylist, from doing her business, unlawfully removed her shop entrance door, without lawful authority”.

    The court heard that Santos also stole electrical wire and goods valued at N994,850, belonging to Demola, from the shop.

    According to Ingobo, the offences contravened sections 411, 280, 287, 273(d) and 168(1)(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Santos pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Davies granted him N100,000 bail with one surety in the like sum.

    She adjourned the case till September 24.

  • Man ‘sends Terminator after ex-lover’

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court will on October 11 begin the trial of a man, Thomas Morgan Olufemi, who allegedly hired one ‘Terminator’ to threaten his ex-lover, Miss Adeleke Taiwo.

    Magistrate M.F. Onamusi fixed the date on August 6, following Olufemi’s not guilty plea to a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and threat to life.

    Olufemi, 41, of No. 18A, Lugard Avenue, Ikoyi, and Terminator, said to be at large, were arraigned by the Onikan Police Division on a charge marked: Q/55/2018.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Friday Mameh alleged that the defendants conspired and committed the offences in Lagos at about 4pm on August 1, at Obalende in Eti-Osa Local Government Area (LGA).

    Mameh said the trouble began after Taiwo allegedly resisted Olufemi’s demand for custody of their baby.

    The court heard that Olufemi recruited an accomplice, who phoned Taiwo on her GSM No. 0909036…..

    The accomplice introduced himself to Taiwo as ‘Terminator’ and “threatened to terminate her life if she refused to comply with his warnings and demand…”

    Olufemi then went to No.30, Masalashi Street, Obalende, where Taiwo was seeking refuge with her friend, Okiti Steffi.

    A quarrel broke out and Olufemi allegedly assaulted Taiwo’s friend, Okiti Steffi, “by giving her a dirty slap on her left cheek.”

    Mameh told the court that the offences contravened sections 172, 232 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

  • Husband docked for allegedly assaulting wife

    A 47-year-old unemployed man, Olakunle Adebayo, was on Monday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly flogging his wife with a belt.

    Olakunle whose address was not provide is facing a two-count charge bordering on assault.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Friday Mameh, told the court that the accused committed the alleged offences on May 16, at 7.30p.m., at Road 16, Ikota Lekki, Lagos State.

    He said the accused unlawfully assaulted his wife, Mrs Tolulope Adebayo by flogging her on the head with a belt.

    “The complainant also fell and sustained an injury when accused pushed her,’’ he said.

    Mameh alleged that the accused was in the habit of assaulting the complainant over her refusal to fend for him.

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 170 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The magistrate, Mr B. I. Bakare, in his ruling granted the accused bail in the sum of N150, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until June 4 for mention.

  • Cashew nut seller docked for N3m theft

    A trader, Uteno Kindness, who allegedly obtained N3million under the pretext of supplying cashew nuts to a buyer, was Tuesday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Kindness, 38, whose residential address was not given, is standing trial before Mr K. O. Ogundare on a three-count charge of fraud, stealing and issuance of a dud cheque.

    According to Prosecuting Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji, the defendant committed the alleged offences last April 28, at about 10:22 am in Lagos.

    He said Kindness obtained N3 million from the complainant, Mr. Taiwo Idewo, under the pretext of supplying him truckloads of cashew nuts, but failed to do so.

    Osuji said: “When the defendant could not supply the trucks of cashew nuts, he issued two bank cheques of N1million and N2million respectively to the complainant.

    “Both cheques were dishonoured on presentation due to insufficient funds in the defendant’s account.”

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 314 and 321 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Kindness pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Ogundare granted him N500, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case continues on May 22.

  • Man gets N10m bail for N141m China export ‘fraud’

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos Tuesday granted a businessman, Chekwube Okafor, N10 million bail following his arraignment for allegedly obtaining N141.6 million from his partner under the pretext of exporting wood to China.

    Chief Magistrate O. A. Botoku gave the ruling after Okafor was arraigned by the police on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and fraud.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Botoku also ordered Okafor to produce two sureties in the like sum, who must also be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payment.

    She adjourned till May 15.

    Earlier, Prosecutor Inspector Steven Molo alleged that Okafor committed the offences between October 2016 and February 2017, at Alaba, in Ojo Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos.

    He said the defendant fraudulently obtained N141.6 million from his business associate, Ifeanyi Okoli, under guise of exporting 44 20-foot containers of wood to China.

    “The complainant did not receive the containers of wood which the defendant obtained money for; he did not even pay back the said money to the complainant.

    “The defendant knew that the representation he made was false,” Molo told Chief Magistrate Botoku.

    According to him, the offences contravened Sections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

  • Nanny ‘burns child’s buttocks with stove fire’

    A nanny, Fatimah Yakubu, who allegedly burnt an eight-year-old girl’s buttocks on a stove, was Monday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Yakubu, 37, of No. 15, Ologolo Street, Lekki Lagos, is facing a one-count charge of assault occasioning grievous harm before Mr B. I. Bakare.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Friday Mameh told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence last Tuesday, at about 11am, at her residence.

    Mameh said: “The defendant grievously harmed the eight-year-old girl by burning her buttocks with a burning stove which caused her bodily harm”.

    The offence, Mameh added, is contrary to Section 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Yakubu pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Bakare granted him N500, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case continues on May 5.

  • Two oil firm workers face N143m theft charge

    Two men, Patrick Akpotor and Evuikowhiroro Omaghomi, who were accused of stealing N143.3 million from Prime Alpha Petroleum Ltd, were Thursday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Akpotor, 62, an accountant and his colleague, Omaghomi, 40, were arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy and stealing before Mr A. A. Adefulire.

    Prosecuting counsel, Charles Odii, told the court that the duo committed the offences between January 2011 and December 2016, at the firm’s office at Engineering Close, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    Odii alleged that they conspired with others at large and stole their employer’s N143.3 million.

    He said: “Akpotor, as an accountant of Prime Alpha Petroleum, used his position and altered documents by falsifying figures on the record of the company.”

    According to him, offences contravened Sections 287(7), 335(a) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Adefulire granted each defendant N20million bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case continues May 22.

  • Trial of alleged ‘fake’ Elegbeda-elect begins April 10

     

     

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos has fixed April 10 for the trial of Alhaji Kehinde Ogunsola, who allegedly falsely claimed to be the Elegbeda-elect of Egbeda.

    The court fixed the date following the absence of prosecuting Inspector Stephen Molo.

    On March 4, the police arraigned Ogunsola before Mr Martin Owumi on a five-count charge of conspiracy, forgery, breach of peace, impersonation and uttering.

    But Monday, another Magistrate, Mrs. A. A. Famobiwo, took over the case following Owumi’s transfer.

    Ogunsola, 45, was accused of forging the letterhead of the lsiba-Oluwa Ruling House, Egbeda and impersonating as the Elegbeda-elect.

    According to the prosecutor, Ogunsola and his accomplices, who are at large, committed the offences last June 19, at No. 131, Idimu Road, Egbeda.

    Molo alleged that Ogunsola wrote a letter on the forged letterhead of lsiba-Oluwa Ruling House to the Commissioner of Local Government, Lagos.

    Ogunsola and his accomplices allegedly conducted themselves “in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by publicly claiming and assuming to be the Elegbeda-elect,” which they knew could cause “violent reaction from the members of the public.”

    The charge, marked J/05/2018, reads in part:

    “That you Alhaji Kehinde Ogunsola and others still at large, on the 19th day of June, 2017 at No. 131, ldimu Road, Egbeda did conspire to commit a felony to wit: forgery, using false documents, and making document without authority.

    “That you Alhaji Kehinde Ogunsola and others still at large, did knowingly forge a letterhead of lsiba-Oluwa Ruling House, Egbeda with intent that it may be used or acted upon as genuine to the prejudice of the lsiba-Oluwa Ruling House, Egbeda, Ministry of Local Government, Lagos State and members of the public.

    “That you Alhaji Kehinde Ogunsola ’m’ and others still at large, on the same date, and place in foresaid magisterial district did represent yourselves and assumed to be the Elegbeda-elect of Egbeda”

    Molo said the offences contravened sections 168(1)(c), 365(1), 366(1) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 as amended and Section 36 of the Oba and Chiefs of Lagos State Law, 1981.

    Ogunsola pleaded not guilty.

  • Fake’ Eko DISCO staff charged with forgery

    A man, who allegedly forged Eko Electricity Distribution (EKEDP) Plc identity card with which he received electricity bills payment, was Monday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Adebayo Ojo, 50, was arraigned by the Area A Police Command, Obalende, before Mrs F. F. George on a three-count charge of forgery and possession of fake identity cards.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Francisca Job said Ojo presented himself as an EKEDP staff at Berkley Street, Lagos Island, and unlawfully reconnected and tampered with electricity installations.

    The alleged incident occurred at about 1pm on March 2, at No.16, Berkley Street.

    Job said: “The defendant forged EKEDP staff identity card with number No. 14068 and presented it to customers to collect electricity bills.

    “Some documents such as a ledger containing EKEDP customers’ details, checklist, metre reading and EKEDP safety belt were unlawfully in the defendant’s possession.”

    According to her, the offences contravened Sections 329, 363(1) and 380 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate George granted him N200, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case continues on March 28.
