  • Ighalo scores as Shanghai Shenhua secure first win of season

Super Eagles forward Odion Ighalo was on target for Shanghai Shenhua as the visitors recorded their first win in the Chinese Super League with a 2-1 win against hosts Henan Jianye.

The game played at the Zhengzhou Hanghai Stadium saw Ighalo open scoring for the visitors in the 52nd minute after he was set up by Wang Lei.

Feng Zhuoyi equalised for the home team in the 83rd minute, while Giovanni Moreno scored the winning goal for Shanghai Shenhua two minutes from time.

Ighalo who received a yellow card in the 25th minute of the encounter has scored two goals in three league appearances for the club this season.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) also reports that he was second top scorer in the Chinese Super League with 21 goals from 28 games during his time with Changchun Yatai last season.

Shanghai Shenhua lost their opening two games of the season against defending champions Shanghai SPIG and Hebbei CFFC.

Another Nigerian, Sone Aluko, ended on the losing side with Beijing Renhe losing 1-0 at home to Beijing Guoan on Saturday at the Beijing Fengtai Stadium.

Yu Dabao scored the winning goal for the visitors a minute after the half hour mark.

  • Ighalo, Musa, Iwobi are top contenders

The next Nigeria Footballer of the Year would emerge at a prestigious AITEO-NFF Football Awards taking place tonight at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Undoubtedly, out of all the players eligible for the award Odion Ighalo, Ahmed Musa and Alex Iwobi have posted exceptional outings for country and clubs.

For instance, Ighalo scored seven goals in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign, the most by any player on the continent, to help Nigeria qualify for the finals in Egypt later this year.

At club level, Ighalo scored 21 goals in 28 matches for Changchun Yatai to emerge the second highest goal scorer in the Chinese Super League last season.

After Changchun Yatai’s relegation, Ighalo joined Shanghai Greenland Shenhua on February 14, 2019 where he has already scored two goals in three matches.

Ahmed Musa has been a worthy captain of the Super Eagles in the absence of John Mikel Obi who has not played for the national team after the Russia 2018 World Cup.

Musa became the first Nigerian to score more than once in a FIFA World Cup match, after scoring twice against Argentina in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and also the first Nigerian to score in two FIFA World Cup competitions, after scoring twice against Iceland in the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

On 4 August 2018, Musa moved to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr for a reported fee of £14.5 million. He has since scored five goals for the Riyadh based side.

22-year-old Onyinye Wilfred Ndidi has been a solid defensive midfielder for the Premier League club Leicester City and the Nigeria national team.

Alex Iwobi is probably having his best season for Arsenal after joining the Gunners while still in elementary school in 2004.

Iwobi’s 40 appearances in all competitions for his club is the most he has achieved so far and has scored five goals; three goals in the English Premier League, one in the League Cup and one in the Europa League.

On the international scene, the Gunners’ star has notched 27 caps for the national team and his most recent goal was scored on June 2, 2018, when England beat Nigeria 2-1 at the Wembley Stadium, in an international friendly.

In the female category, 2014, 2016, 2017 African Women’s Footballer of the Year, Asisat Oshoala is the clear favourite for the Nigeria Women’s Player of the Year Award after her stellar performance helped the Super Falcons to a third consecutive Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) title with three goals in the 2018 edition and her influential role for Dalian Quanjian which won the 2018 Chinese Women’s Super League title.

On January 31, 2019, Spanish Club, FC Barcelona Femení Women signed Oshoala on a Loan deal until the end of the season and she has already scored five goals in five matches since joining the side.

Francisca Ordega, another player in contention for the award was arguably the best Super Falcons’ player in their AWCON 2018 triumph in Ghana, where she scored two goals and two assists and won the Woman of the Match Award at the final game against South Africa. She also helped Atlético Madrid to the Spanish Women’s league title in the year under review.

On February 28, 2019, the delectable player joined Shanghai W.F.C.

Ordega, who has represented Nigeria at all international levels, has 34 caps for the Super Falcons.

Onome Ebi who is also in the race plays for Henan Huishang in the Chinese Women’s Super League. At the back, the experienced defender was solid for the Super Falcons which conceded just one goal on their way to the final of AWCON 2018.

Meanwhile, Secretary-General of world football –ruling body, FIFA, Ms Fatma Samoura arrived Nigeria on Saturday, ahead of more than 20 Presidents of FIFA-Member Associations across the African continent for Monday’s 2nd AITEO-NFF Football Awards taking place at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

At lunch on Sunday with the bigwigs of the NFF and a number of stakeholders of the Nigeria game, the Senegal-born former UN top official, expressed delight at being invited to Nigeria for the Awards and also for being considered worthy of a special award on the night. She will receive the NFF Order of Merit award.

At a press briefing on Friday, NFF 1st President and Chairman of the Awards Organizing Committee, Seyi Akinwunmi praised sponsors AITEO for continued support for the annual event and assured that both organisations will put on a great show tonight.

AITEO’s General Manager, Finance, Taiye Eyewuoma stated that the sponsor, Nigeria’s leading energy solution company and NFF’s Official Optimum Partner, is committed to sponsoring the awards ceremony as the partnership “is yielding good dividends for AITEO”. AITEO is also the sponsor of the Federation Cup competition and the annual African Football Awards.

Monday’s event will be broadcast live by leading television houses SuperSport and Africa Independent Television (AIT).

Among the highlights of the night would be the special honour to the 1994 set of Super Eagles – the squad forever referred to as the ‘Golden Generation’ for being the first to qualify Nigeria for the FIFA World Cup finals, winning the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and reaching the Round of 16 at the World Cup finals in the U.S. A good number of the squad members teamed up with the Dream Team of 1996 that became Africa’s first winners of the men’s football gold at the quadrennial Olympic Games.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, while business mogul, politician and avid football financier and supporter, Chief Moshood Kasimawo Olawale Abiola, who died in 1998, will be honoured posthumously with the NFF Presidential Award.

A welcome remark by NFF 1st VP/Chairman, Organizing Committee, Barrister Akinwunmi will be preceded by a performance by internationally –respected dancer Kaffy, before brief remarks by President of NFF, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick, NFF and AITEO’s Deputy Managing Director, Mr. Francis Peters. Superstar musicians D’ Banj, Ricardo Banks and Timi Dakolo are among those to entertain on the night.

Former Nigerian captain, Olusegun Odegbami, Super Falcons’ legend Maureen Madu, former Super Falcons’ coach Edwin Okon, former FIFA referee Faith Irabor and Chairman of the Nigeria Women Football League, Aisha Falode would be among the presenters at the event.

  • Ighalo scores again

Super Eagles’ striker, Odion Ighalo scored the first goal to help Shanghai Shenhua secure a 2-1 over Henan Jianye in a Chinese Super League game played yesterday at the Zhengzhou Hanghai Stadium.

Just back from international duties where his seven goals ensured Nigeria clinched top spot in the AFCON qualifiers, the ex-Watford forward was handed a starting shirt by manager, Quique

Sanchez Flores and he justified that inclusion by putting his team ahead in the 52nd minute after the first half ended goalless.

The Nigerian International buried a left-footed shot to the bottom right corner after teammate Wang Wei had set him up.

Ighalo nearly grabbed his brace in the 76th minute when his speculative shot narrowly went wide of the left side of goal.

That goal was his second for the club since joining last month, having played three games for  the Hongkou Stadium outfit in the topflight. The victory placed Shanghai Shenhua on the tenth position in the league’s latest standings  ahead their next game on April 7 at home against Beijing Renhe.

  • Ighalo, Onyekuru, Simon on target

The Super Eagles defeated the Pirates of Seychelles 3-1 in their final qualifying match of the 2019 African Cup of Nations played yesterday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State.

Goals from Odion Ighalo, Henry Onyekuru and substitute Moses Simon helped the Nigerian team defeat the underdogs in yesterday’s clash.

Being well-placed at the top of the log, Gernot Rohr’s men came into the clash as huge favourites but showed less than what was expected of them in the first 45 minutes of the game.

Odion Ighalo scored the opener for the Eagles via a spot kick in the 35th minute after Wilfred Ndidi was brought down in the Seychelles box.

The Pirates then benefitted from a howler from Nigeria’s goalkeeper Francis Uzoho who failed to effectively punch a cross, to snatch an equaliser through Rody Melanie’s strike in the 41st minute.

The Eagles came back better in the second-half and just five minutes after the restart, went into the lead through a header from Henry Onyekuru. The Galatasaray forward nodded into the net from a Jamilu Collins cross to send his effort past the Seychelles goalkeeper from close range.

Moses Simon, who was introduced late in the second period, put the icing in the cake for the Eagles with a pin point strike in the box on the stroke of 90 minutes. The winger picked up a pass from Collins, twisted and turned, before blasting in at the near post for the Eagles third.

Nigeria thus finish Group E as winners with an unassailable 13 points regardless of the outcome of Monday’s game between group mates Libya and South Africa.

The Eagles will now have their attention turned to an international friendly against AFCON hosts Egypt on Tuesday.

  • Ighalo: Eagles need to prepare well for 2019 AFCON

China-based Super Eagles forward, Odion has said that Super Eagles clash with Egypt is good preparation for the team ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Shanghai Shenhua striker believes the games will help the team tremendously as they prepare for the tournament.

“We are in a good direction, we just want to continue to work hard together as a team, not to feel relaxed just because we have gotten the ticket to the AFCON,” Ighalo said.

“It’s one thing to qualify and it’s another thing to go there and perform and that is what we want to do.”

He added that “We want to compete, we want to do better than what the Eagles before us have done in the past, I just want us to keep the concentration level high, and who knows – everything is possible.”

  • Ighalo attracts Southampton interest

Nigeria international Odion Ighalo has attracted reported interest from English Premier League club Southampton.

Ighalo previously stated that he is keen to leave Changchun Yatai following their relegation from the Chinese Super League (CSL).

The 29-year-old scored 21 goals in 28 games for the club last season, but it was not enough to keep them up. Several Turkish clubs are also said to be interested in his services.

Ighalo previously played for Watford in England’s top-flight. The burly forward scored 40 goals in 100 appearances for the Hornets, including 17 in 55 Premier League matches for the club.

The former Udinese and Granada forward is the joint-top scorer in 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification with six goals. He missed Super Eagles’ most recent qualifier, a 1-1 draw away to South Africa last November due to injury.

  • Ighalo injured in Yatai’s 2-2 draw against Tianjin

Super Eagles’ forward, Odion Ighalo became a major doubt for Nigeria’s clash against South Africa in Johannesburg after he was taken off in Changchun Yatai’s 2-2 draw against Tianjin Quanjian, AOIFootball.com reports.

The Tianjin captain began his 27th league game but was withdrawn after 17 minutes after picking up an injury and taken off.

Goals from Yongpo Wang and Alexander Pato put the visitors two goals up before a late fightback from Rui Yu and Long Tan ensured both teams had a share of the points at the final whistle.

Ighalo had been in form for both club and country and will now be assessed before Sunday’s final league clash with Changchun hoping to beat the drop.

  • Ighalo saves Changchun Yatai from defeat

Super Eagles’ striker, Odion Ighalo scored an 89th-minute equaliser to save Changchun Yatai from a humiliating home defeat and force Hebei CFFC to a 2-2 draw in the Chinese Super League tie played last night at the Changchun Stadium.

The Super Eagles’ striker notched his 16th goal in his 20th appearance so far for the coach Jingang Chen-led side.

Ighalo, who had been given a last chance by Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr to prove himself, will hope to simulate his club form for the national team in next month’s 2019 AFCON qualifier against Seychelles.

Ezequiel Lavezzi’s goal in the eighth minute, gave Chris Coleman’s side an early lead, but Adrian Mierzejewski’s effort in the 71st minute levelled matters.

The visitors regained their lead in the 83rd minute through Morocco striker Ayoub El Kaabi before Ighalo struck late to deny Coleman’s men an away victory.

Yatai is placed 12th in the log, having garnered 25 points from 20 matches. They lock horns with Henan Jianye at the Zhengzhou Hanghai Stadium on September 2.

  • CSL: Ighalo is second joint top goal scorer after Changchun brace

Super Eagles’ striker, Odion Jude Ighalo continued his mesmerising form in front of goal as he netted his 13th and 14th goal of the season to help Changchun Yatai to a 3-1 comeback victory away at Beijing Renhe, AOIFootball.com reports.

The in-form striker, who led his team out for the 18th Chinese Super League game, spearheaded the attack as they fell behind after just three minutes when Cameroonian Benjamin Moukandjo put the hosts in front.

Changchun, however, equalised fourteen minutes later when Dadi Zhou brought them level before an individual effort from Nigeria’s Ighalo, five minutes before the half-hour mark put the away side 2-1 up, a lead they held going into the halftime break.

Both sides came out smoking in the second half but it was Changchun who had the last laugh when Ighalo stepped up to score from 12 yards in the 84th minute after Nizamdin was shown a red card for a professional handball in the box.

With his brace against Renhe, Ighalo has now scored 14 league goals this term, putting him joint second alongside Eran Zhavi with Shanghai SIPG Lei Wu still leading the pack with 16 goals after 18 round of matches.

Ighalo was on for the entire match duration and he received the Man of the Match accolade with a game rating of 8.5, scoring from two of his three shots fired, whilst also completing a pass accuracy of 79%.

The victory further moves Yatai away from the relegation zone as they are now 8th on the log with 24 points from 18 games.
