    Group petitions IGP over burning of burial site, disruption of cleric’s burial

    A human rights group, Save The Poor and Needy Charity Initiative (SPANCI), has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun over alleged burning of burial site of Prophet Joseph Odeyemi Bojesomo by some individuals.

    The group urged the IGP to investigate the burning of the site and disruption of the burial of the cleric.

    It was gathered that Bojesomo, who died in June this year, was until his death the spiritual head of Orioke Agbara Emimimo allegedly located at Efon Alaaye in Ekiti state.

    According to the report, the family of the deceased had concluded plans to bury the cleric within the premises of the mountain (Church) between  December 13 and 14, 2023.

    SPANCI President, Yemi Ezekiel Bello in the petition addressed to the IGP and made available to our correspondent on Monday, December 25, alleged that some individuals who opposed the burial of the cleric withn the premises of the church went ahead to burn the burial site and disrupted the burial.

    Bello in the petition said that some buildings within the premises and other materials worth millions of naira were destroyed

    He, therefore, appealed to the IGP to investigate the matter and arrest the perpetrators.

    Bello in the statement said that the group was not happy with the way Osun state police command handled the matter.

    The group said: “We in Save the Poor and Needy to Charity Initiative are not happy with the Osun state police command negligence and conspiracy with some powerful people in the state including Chief Taiwo Agbonmagbe, the Saba of Erinmo land, and their thugs which we have alleged in many past press releases and petitions.

    “We had earlier in our petitions pleaded to Mr President, IGP and others to provide maximum security around Orioke Agbara Emimimo Efon Alaaye popularly called Orioke Erinmo for the safety of the Bojesomos, those on the mountain and those coming for the burial of late prophet Joseph Odeyemi Eyinafe Bojesomo which we have alleged Elerinmo.

    “What later happened on between 13th and 14th December 2023 the day the late prophet Bojesomo was to be buried was that thugs started shooting guns, invaded the prayer mountain and burn the building built to bury the late prophet and other buildings and stole away and destroy valuable equipments and commodities which includes fridge, generators and others worth millions of naira.

    “Please note that the said mountain is not in Osun state, we only directed the petition to the AIG because the perpetrators are living in Erinmo hence the police from Ijebujesha and Osun state command and at large lacked jurisdiction to arrest anybody from Efon Alaaye. Also, Elerinmo and his thugs did not allow the burial of late Bojesomo on the said mountain hence our client for the safety of their lives buried their father somewhere in Efon.

    “We hereby call on the IGP to take action against the men of Osun state police command and CID who connived with Elerinmo to pervert, prevent, obstruct and defeat the cause of justice and order immediate arrest and prosecution of Elerinmo, Chief Saba and their thugs or we may not have choice than to sue the police for such involvement and defense of criminal act which should be punished instead of doing justice.’

    Reps to IGP: Promote officers recommended by PSC

    The House of Representatives on Tuesday, December 19, asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately implement the recommendation of the Police Service Commission (PSC) concerning the promotion of some men and officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

    This followed a motion on notice by the Minority Leader of the House, Hon. Kingsley Chinda alleging refusal of the IGP to implement the recommendations of the PSC.

    Hon. Chinda informed the House of the non-implementation by the IGP and recommendations by the PSC for the promotion of qualified officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

    He said as an important agency of the federal government; created under Section 214(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and according to Section 4 of the Police Act, the police force is empowered, among other things, to ensure the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of offenders, the preservation of law and order, the protection of life and property, and the due enforcement of all laws and regulations with which they are directly charged;

    He said the Inspector General of Police is appointed by the President of the country on the advice of the Nigeria Police Council, according to Section 215(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), while the Police Service Commission (PSC) is statutorily created and charged with responsibility for the appointment, promotion, and discipline of persons (other than the office of the IGP) in the Nigeria Police Force;

    Chinda who heads the Minority caucus in the House alleged that earlier in 2023, the PSC, in the exercise of its statutory responsibilities, at one of its meetings approved the promotion of several police officers, a notice of which was duly conveyed to the IGP to release signal and accordingly effect the same.

    He said the IGP subsequently ignored the PSC recommendation and deliberately neglected and/or refused to effect the release, despite measures taken by the PSC for him to do so.

    According to him, the IGP’s refusal to act on the PSC’s recommendation is not in the best interest of the men and officers of the NPF and the country at large.

    He said unless swift measures are immediately taken to implement the PSC’s recommendations, the morale, commitment, and dedication to duty of the affected men and officers of the NPF are likely to be negatively affected.
