    Easter: IGP orders tight security nationwide

    The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, on Thursday, March 28, ordered high-level security and protection of public spaces across the country.

    Egbetokun reassured Nigerians of police commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and visitors during the forthcoming Easter celebrations.

    The IGP also directed all State Commissioners of Police (CPs) and their supervising Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) to deploy police personnel and operational assets to areas of likely security threats within their respective areas of responsibility (AoRs).

    He said intensive and proactive visibility patrols will be conducted at all worship centres, train stations, highways, motor parks, airports, waterways, recreation centres, banks, and other financial institutions, as well as other critical infrastructures and public spaces.

    The IGP also assured all travellers who will be visiting their hometowns and other places within the country for the festivities of adequate security irrespective of the medium of such travels whether by road, air, waterways, or rail, as deployments have been increased and visibility patrols intensified in all areas including aerial patrol and surveillance.

    According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi: “The Nigeria Police Force emphasizes the importance of professional conduct among its officers deployed for these duties. While ensuring courteousness to law-abiding citizens, officers will maintain firmness and ruthlessness towards criminal elements seeking to exploit the festive period for their unlawful activities.

    “The IGP felicitates with Nigerians, especially the Christian community, on the occasion of the Easter celebrations. He appreciates the citizens for their support and calls on them to cooperate continually with the Nigeria Police and other security agencies by providing prompt and actionable information to prevent and detect crime.

    “As we commemorate the crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, let us come together in unity and vigilance to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for all. The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to serving and protecting the public, and we urge everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest Police Station/Post.”

    Substance abuse is mother of all crimes, says IGP

    The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, has disclosed that drug and substance abuse is the mother of all crimes, with drug abuse being a stepping stone to substance abuse.

    He also revealed that some common long-term effects of drug and substance abuse included damage to vital organs, such as the brain, heart, and liver, increased risk of mental health disorders, impaired cognitive function, weakened immune system, and addiction.

    Egbetokun, who was represented by Edo State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, spoke yesterday at a conference that was organised by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), the Faculty of Peace Organisation, which has Osunbor Omokaro as its President/Founder, in collaboration with Edo Ministry of Health, with the theme: “The Consequences of Drug and Substance Abuse.”

    The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd.), was the special guest of honour at the well-attended event that took place at the Edo State government-owned Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub on Airport Road, Benin, and had students of many secondary schools in Benin, and other stakeholders in attendance.

    IGP deploys mobile policemen to Kuriga over abduction

    The Inspector–General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun has ordered the deployment of armed mobile police officers to Kuriga community.

    The development followed the distressing abduction of school students in Kaduna State.

    Egbetokun gave the order on Tuesday when he paid a working visit to the State to assess the situation with Deputy Inspector – General of Police (DIG) in charge of Force Intelligence Department, Habu Sani; DIG, Department of Operation, Ede Ayuba Ekpeji;  AIG Police Mobile Force Yekini Adio Ayoku and other senior officers.

    A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ASP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said: “The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, along with the DIG in charge of the Force Intelligence Department, Habu Sani, psc, DIG Department of Operations Ede Ayuba Ekpeji, psc(+), AIG Police Mobile Force Yekini Adio Ayoku, mni, and other senior officers undertook a visit to the state to assess the situation firsthand. During his visit, the IGP met with the Governor and extended heartfelt sympathies to the people of Kaduna State, particularly the Kuriga community affected by this tragic incident.

    “The IGP reiterated the dedication of the Nigeria Police Force to ensuring the safe rescue of all the abducted students assuring that both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches are being vigorously pursued to secure the release of the students and bring the perpetrators to justice.

    “In a bid to bolster security efforts, the IGP also announced the immediate deployment of a full armed and ready unit of mobile policemen to the Kuriga Community to enhance security in the affected area and facilitate swift action towards the rescue operation.

    “In response, the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, His Excellency Senator Uba Sani, reaffirmed the government’s readiness to support the police in their rescue efforts. He assured of continuous assistance and provision of support to the deployed officers. Additionally, the Governor cautioned against sensational reportage by the media, urging for responsible journalism during this challenging period.

    “During the visit, the IGP also engaged with police officers at the Police Command and the Police College, Kaduna. He addressed their concerns and assured them of the Force’s unwavering commitment to their welfare, with a view to bequeathing to Nigerians a police institution that is service driven, professionally competent, people friendly and rule of law compliant for a more secure environment in Nigeria.

    “The Inspector General of Police reiterated that the task ahead of the Nigeria Police Force is critical and will be carried out assiduously to ensure the safety and security of all citizens. He urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with the Police and other relevant security agencies in the tireless duty towards a swift resolution of the present security challenges in our dear county”.

    The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun on Monday, March 11, assured Nigerians of adequate security during the Ramadan period.

    Egbetokun said that the police as an institution recognizes the importance of respecting religious practices and cultural traditions and the need to promote the principles of tolerance, understanding, and unity within our diverse society.

    A statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said: “As the holy month of Ramadan begins, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, extends the warmest greetings from the Nigeria Police Force to all Muslim Ummah across the country on the Ramadan season, a time of reflection, spiritual growth, and communal solidarity which holds great significance for millions of Muslim faithful around the world.

    “During this holy period, the Nigeria Police reaffirms its commitment to ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of all citizens.

    IGP to Nigerians: We are committed to improved welfare package for police officers

    The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Sunday, March 3, reiterated the commitment of his leadership to improve welfare package of every officer of the Nigeria Police Force in all areas. 

    Egbetokun disclosed this while commissioning a new block of wards and a physiotherapy department building at the Police Hospital, Eleyele, Ibadan as part of the drives towards improved welfare for all officers of the Nigeria Police Force. 

    The newly commissioned building is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to cater to the medical needs of police officers and their families, as well as members of the public who seek healthcare services at the Police Hospital.

    He said the addition of the physiotherapy department will enhance the hospital’s capacity to provide comprehensive healthcare services and rehabilitation for patients recovering from various injuries.

    The IGP noted that the project would benefit not only members of the Nigeria Police Force but also communities in close proximity to the hospital.

    He commended the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Police Hospital Ibadan, ACP Olakunle Kazeem for his selflessness in sourcing funds and ensuring the funds were expended appropriately for the construction of the structure.  

    Egbetokun assured that the police will upgrade existing health facilities, construct, and equip more in the various host communities as part of the corporate social responsibility of the Nigeria Police in order to improve the welfare capital of Police officers and other residents in such areas.

    The Inspector -General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, has condemned any form of extortion in the Force.

    Egbetokun warned all officers against using or dropping his name for such nefarious activities.

    The Police boss said the development was to maintain the highest standards of integrity within the Nigeria Police Force.

    The IGP expressed deep concern, emphasising that such actions tarnish the reputation of his person and the Police Force and eroding public trust.

    Egbetokun emphasised that any officer found guilty of leveraging his name for fraudulent activities or extortion will face severe disciplinary measures.

    He urged officers to uphold transparency and professionalism, reiterating that the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force is at stake if such is not checked.

    A statement on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi: reads “Furthermore, IGP Kayode Egbetokun implored the public to exercise caution and report any attempts to exploit his name for fraudulent activities or extortion, most especially in the investigation of cases.

    “He highlighted the crucial role citizens play in collaboration with the Police Force to maintain a high standard of conduct and eliminate corruption within the system.

    “The IGP, therefore, reassured the public of the Force’s commitment, under his watch, to root out misconduct and ensure accountability at all levels. He urged Nigerians to promptly report any incidents of extortion or fraudulent activity, providing detailed information to facilitate thorough investigations that will lead to severe sanctions for erring officers.

    IGP approves CSP Okuwobi’s appointment as POCACOV national coordinator

    The Inspector – General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has approved the appointment of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Olabisi Okuwobi as the new National Coordinator for the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV).

    IGP also approved the appointment of Coordinators for the six geopolitical zones for effectiveness which will enhance non-kinetic approach to addressing common security challenges in the country. 

    The decision, which forms part of a broader organisational restructuring, the police boss said, is o bolster the campaign’s effectiveness in crime prevention through developmental initiatives and human relations. 

    According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi: “CSP Okuwobi boasts a rich academic background, holding a Master of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Ibadan. She is actively engaged with revered professional bodies such as the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and the International Public Relations Association (IPRA). 

    “With over two decades of experience within the Nigeria Police Force, including a notable tenure as a Police Information Officer with the United Nations Missions in Liberia, Police Public Relations Officer for Delta, Benue, and Oyo States, Okuwobi has demonstrated versatility across various policing domains.

    “Acknowledged for her exceptional contributions, Okuwobi has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career including the UN Award of Commendation for Outstanding Performance, the Red Cross Award of Honour, and Legislative Award for Outstanding Performance amongst others. Her prowess in crime fighting and innovative leadership has earned her widespread recognition and admiration.

    “Given her distinguished career and expertise in law enforcement and public relations, CSP Okuwobi is well-equipped to lead POCACOV into its next phase. In her role as National Coordinator, she will spearhead the implementation of targeted strategies to combat cultism, misuse, and abuse of drugs, crime, and social vices through preventive measures. Emphasizing proactive community engagement, Okuwobi will focus on initiatives within educational institutions, sports, entertainment industry, digital media circles, and youth development to foster positive police-community relations and trust-building mechanisms for the NPF”.

    Insecurity: IGP orders arms drill, reorientation for police officers

    The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Friday, February 9, ordered regular and continuous reorientation courses, arms drills, Baton and Rifle Exercises (BARE) for all police personnel across the country. 

    The IGP reaffirmed his commitment to reposition the police force through modern global practices through training and retraining of police officers and men, at the Passing out Parade of personnel of the Special Protection Unit (SPU) on a two (2) week retraining program held at SPU Training School, Dei-Dei Abuja, which included a brief display of martial arts skill, assimilation test comprising stripping and assembling of firearm with one hand, either with eyes open or blindfolded in Abuja.

    According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Office, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi: “The AIG SPU, AIG Okon.O. Effiong psc(+),fdc, was represented by the DCP SPU Sabastine Dongshal  psc(+), who was accompanied by some other senior officers of the Unit and reiterated the readiness to cascade such training to all Commands and Formations of the NPF in line with the directive of the IGP.”

    Police working hard to curb kidnapping, killings – IGP

    The Inspector–General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun on Thursday, February 8, assured that police officers are working round the clock to curb the menace of kidnapping, killings, and other criminal activities in the country.

    Egbetokun gave the assurance at a conference with strategic police managers held at the Goodluck Jonathan International peacekeeping hall, Force headquarters, Abuja.

    He said that between December 2023 and February 2024, the force recorded one hundred and seventy-two (172) cases of kidnappings.

    The IGP said: “Following our last meeting held on the 18th of December, 2024, I am pleased to report that substantial progress has been recorded, driven by the implementation of various strategies to address the rising wave of crimes in the country. Of particular significance is the launch of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) in the FCT which has started to yield positive dividends as highlighted later in this address. Significant strides have also been made in maintaining law and order and combating criminal activities, including but not limited to kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, insurgency, and secessionist groups.

    “Let us continue to support and uplift our officers, whose tireless efforts contribute significantly to the security and prosperity of our communities. It is important for us to address the concerns and fears of our fellow Nigerians regarding the security situation in our country. We understand the gravity of the challenges we face and the responsibility we bear in ensuring the safety and well-being of every citizen.

    “I assure you that the Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in its commitment to protecting lives and property, and we are actively working to address the security threats facing our nation. By fostering stronger partnerships with communities, leveraging intelligence-led approaches, and enhancing our operational capabilities, we are dedicated to confronting these challenges head-on and restoring peace and stability across the country. The safety of our people is our utmost priority, and we pledge to continue undauntedly to safeguard our beloved nation.

    “During this period, we recorded thirty-five (35) cases of terrorism/secessionist attacks, three hundred and two (302) cases of murder, one hundred and eleven (111) cases of armed robbery, one hundred and seventy-two (172) cases of kidnapping, sixty-seven (67) cases of banditry, and fifteen (15) cases of unlawful possession of firearms.

    “By executing some of the strategies and plans formulated at the last conference, the Nigeria Police Force arrested eight hundred and fourteen (814) suspects for their participation in various crimes, rescued one hundred and seven (107) kidnapped victims and recovered one hundred and sixty-six (166) various firearms, one thousand and seventy-four (1,074) ammunition and forty-one (41) vehicles”.

    In the recent conduct of the run-off and by-elections across 26 states of Nigeria on February 3rd, 2024, the IGP said fourteen (14) suspects, including two (2) public officials, were apprehended across the affected States.

    The police boss said the arrested suspects will be handed over to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) upon the conclusion of investigations for further actions in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended).

    He said: “The recent peaceful and successful conduct of the run-off and by-elections across 26 states of Nigeria on February 3rd, 2024, is another evidence of result-oriented proof of the strategic deployments of the Nigeria Police Force and resilient support for our democratic process. Whilst the majority of the elections proceeded smoothly, there were pockets of challenges encountered in some areas. In response, the Police took swift action, making several arrests to prevent the disruption of the electoral process. In total, fourteen (14) suspects, including two (2) public officials, were apprehended across the affected States. In Akwa Ibom State, a locally made pistol was recovered, while a suspected thug was lynched by members of the public in Kaduna State”.

    The IGP frowned at the attitude of some police officers, which he said is compounding the negative image of the police in the eyes of people.

    He said: “At this juncture, it is imperative for me to emphasize that in spite of the aforementioned achievements and accolades, we must not lose sight of the pervasive atmosphere of insecurity and the malfeasance of some of our men and officers. It is deeply regrettable that we have some unscrupulous elements in our midst who often conduct themselves improperly, thereby bringing the Force into disrepute.

    These unscrupulous elements in our midst often disparage the good and hard work of the majority of us.

    “I hereby state categorically that it is our responsibility to ensure better service delivery through the strict supervision of our men and officers. It is incumbent upon us to lead by example and leave no room for the negative elements in our midst to thrive.”

    IGP hails Lagos officer for rejecting N4m bribe

    The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has commended the officer in charge of the police tactical team attached to Area K, Marogbo, Lagos State Command, SP Rilwan Kasumu and his team for rejecting N4m bribe while investigating a case of drug peddling and unlawful possession of ammunition. 

    The team arrested one Esther Newman Obiekezie, f, 42 years, aka Candy, of No 6, Mojirade Street, Ilogbo Lagos, on February 6 where she sells drugs called ICE and recovered a large quantity of the substance and some AK47 live ammunition from her. 

    In the cause of the investigation, the duo of Akete Esther, f, 43, and Oke Okebalam, m, 49 years, of Ajangbadi Lagos, came to the station in Ijanikin, to solicit release of the drug peddler, and offered N4m pleading that the police should stop disrupting the illegal business (drug peddling) of Esther, henceforth.

    According to a statement on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi: “The police officer who frowned at the offer seized the cash and marked it exhibit and arrested the duo for further investigation and prosecution.

    “The IGP, therefore, reiterates the commitment of the Force to harnessing all available means and adopting professional anti crime strategies to tackle all forms of crimes and criminality in Nigeria”.
