South Africa coach picks Moses, Iheanacho, Iwobi as ‘Dangermen’

Newly appointed coach of the Bafana Bafana of South Africa says beating Nigeria in Uyo when they clash on the 10th of June in the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers is possible.

The coach who realised a squad of 25 players for the tie insist he has a squad mixed with youth and experience who will be able to get a positive result against Nigeria.

” We are not scared of Nigeria, we just need to be at our best to stop them from causing us trouble. Everybody knows about the quality of Victor Moses, Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi, they are by far the three men who can do damages for Nigeria “, Baxter said.

“We have also looked at aerial strength and tried to spread that well throughout the team; it means if we can have good preparation before we go, then we have a squad that is capable of giving Nigeria a good game.”

  • Summer transfer window West Brom fans urge Pulis to sign Iheanacho

Summer transfer window West Brom fans urge Pulis to sign Iheanacho

Fans of English Premiership side West Bromwich Albion have urged manager Tony Pulis to make a bid for Manchester City Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho, who could depart the Etihad outfit in the summer.

Iheanacho has found games hard to come by since the arrival of Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus in January , and he could be leave the team in search of regular games when the transfer window opens in the summer.

West Brom are on the look out for a forward in the summer transfer window following the departure of Saido Berahino to Stoke City in January, and fans of the team conducted a poll on if Iheanacho should be signed by the manager in the summer.

The pool which was conducted on Twitter saw 82% of the fans voting for Iheanacho to be signed, while 8 % said no to his signing. 12% of the fans were however indecisive over his coming to the team will benefit them.

  • Iheanacho gets 17 minutes as Man City returns

Iheanacho gets 17 minutes as Man City returns

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho was in action for 17 minutes as Manchester city beat relegation threatened Hull city 3-1 on Saturday to get back on track. The victory is coming after the Pep Guardiola side had gone four premier league games without a win. Iheanacho came in as late substitute in the 73rd minute replacing David Silva. The tie had opened with an own goal from Ahmed Elmohamady putting the hosts ahead at the Etihad Stadium before Sergio Aguero and Fabian Delph secured three important points in the race for Champions League qualification. It was Aguero’s 28th goal of the season.
Hull, who had gone into the game with confidence after successive victories, were outplayed but managed a late consolation when City’s recalled goalkeeper Claudio Bravo allowed an Andrea Ranocchia shot to slip through his grasp.
Until then it had been a quiet return for the Chilean, who was dropped in January after a series of poor performances and conceding six goals from six shots faced in back-to-back games against Everton and Tottenham.
Again, Hull’s goal came from their only shot on target. The criticism of the 33-year-old will continue although the keeper could claim his view was obscured by John Stones.
It was a unique outing for Silva who was making his 300th appearance for the club, he volleyed over and Sterling had another effort blocked which otherwise would have further increased the tally.

  • 1,400 fans to watch Iwobi, Iheanacho

1,400 fans to watch Iwobi, Iheanacho

When the Nigeria’s Super Eagles battle Senegal in today’s international friendly, only a pantry of 1400 will watch the encounter at the Hive.

And The Hive, being a League 2 grounds, is not only far less expensive to hire than some of the bigger stadiums, it also has on-site training facilities, which make it a one-stop shop for travelling teams.

Coupled with a large British-Nigerian population in London – the 2011 census suggested over 100,000 Nigerian-born Brits live in the capital – it seems a decent prospect.

Indeed, you might expect a large appetite to see their stars in the flesh playing for the Super Eagles against top quality opposition. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

If you thought attendances were bad for tournaments like the Cup of Nations, where stadiums are often under half full, today’s ticket sales are something of a shock.

With entry as little as £10 for adults in some areas, and £5 for under-14s, and such a plethora of Premier League stars on show, you would hope for a decent turn-out, given the dearth of quality football available during an international break.

The Hive holds a little over 6,000 fans, is incredibly easy to access by public transport, and is convenient for many of London’s vast number of football supporters. Surely it should be full for a showpiece fixture, even if it is a friendly!

  • 2018 world cup qualifier Rohr: Why I invited Iheanacho, Iwobi, Success

2018 world cup qualifier Rohr: Why I invited Iheanacho, Iwobi, Success

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has explained why he invited young stars Isaac Success (Watford), Kelechi Iheanacho (Man City) and Alex Iwobi (Arsenal) for the World Cup qualifiers.

Iheanacho and Iwobi started both games against Zambia and Cameroon, while the Hornets’ number ten missed out as a result of injury.

“As the team and the country had been deeply affected by failing to qualify for the finals in Gabon, I wanted to bring in some younger players into the squad.

“This, of course, is without closing the door on anyone,”  Rohr told fifa.com.

Rohr is not totally neglecting experience and the likes of Mikel, Echiejile, Onazi, Ideye and Ahmed Musa were handed opportunities to add to the international caps against Zambia and Algeria.

Nigeria will face Cameroon in Uyo in their next World Cup qualifier in August.

  • Iwobi, Iheanacho are Eagles’ pillars – Kanu

Iwobi, Iheanacho are Eagles’ pillars – Kanu

Former Super Eagles Captain, Kanu Nwankwo has said that Alex Iwobi of Arsenal and Kelechi Iheanacho of  Manchester City are the shining lights of Nigerian football and wants the players to be managed well.

Kanu, who has predicted that the good old days of Nigerian  football will return with the next one to two years, also advised  Iwobi and Iheanacho not to rest on their oars and continue to work  very hard until they become world stars.

Kanu in an exclusive chat with SportingLife expressed his mind  on the two players. “Nigeria football is coming back to the glorious days that we used to know. We have young players that  are playing well in their clubs. Alex Iwobi is a player I have watched and I see him as someone that is cool headed and he  listens to whatever you tell him to do and takes it on board. He works hard too. He’s got the talent and he can do it

“My advice to him is not to be carried away by his current form  and the accolades that has been following his impressive  performances week in week out in the English Premiership. He is just starting. If he can keep it up and also double up his efforts he is going to reach where we want him to reach and he is going  to be  a good product for the country.

“Kelechi Iheanacho is doing very well too. Whenever he comes  in or starts for his club Manchester City or the Super Eagles he  keeps scoring goals which a good striker is known for. With what I have seen from these boys, I think the national team has a future  and that is why I said in the next one or two years the Eagles will  be there and bounce back to reckoning.

“This, however, depends on how we do as well as manage things  in the country. It is left for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to package the  players and the national team well”, Kanu said.

  • ‘Why Iheanacho can’t stop scoring’

    ‘Why Iheanacho can’t stop scoring’

THE startling news that Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho has the best goal record in Premier League history has not come as a surprise to one of his most trusted friends, Chidera Ezeh, reports MORAKINYO ABODUNRIN
Ezeh and Iheanacho have long struck friendship and could be regarded as a Siamese Twins long before they met at the national Under-15 team and through their days with the Golden Eaglets’ class of 2013.
On Boxing Day, Iheanacho continued his outstanding goals-per-minute ratio with his strike for Manchester City in the 3-0 win at Hull and thus emerged as the best goals-to-minutes ratio of any player in Premier League history.
This means Iheanacho has now scored a goal every 96 minutes, an impressive achievement given this is only his second season in the English top-flight having made his debut under Manuel Pellegrini last term. The 20-year-old has also remarkably netted 12 Premier League goals from just 19 shots on target in over 38 games.
But Ezeh, now on loan to Second Division side Portimonense SC from FC Porto, has yet opened up on Iheanacho’s rich vein of form, saying his buddy is the ‘Chosen One’ from above.
“I’m in touch always with my good friend (Kelechi Iheanacho). He has always been nice to me,” began Ezeh who just returned to match fitness recently after he was operated upon last March due to a shoulder injury. “As you know, we struck friendship long ago even before we met in the national team; he has always been a good person.
“Personally, to me, he is real and always shows elderly love. He is real and understands life generally.”
Just last week, Iheanacho revealed he has been advised by his Manchester City’s boss, Pep Guardiola, to start watching loads and loads of video tapes of mercurial Barca’s striker, Lionel Messi, and Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski so as to improve his goal scoring tactics.
Iheanacho reportedly said: “Of course he tells me about them (Messi and Lewandowski,), that I should really watch them and see what they are doing and make sure I am improving on what I am doing.
“I watch all of their games. They are great players and I need to watch them to improve; they have great qualities and you need to see what they are doing.
“Everyone’s quality is different but you have to take some things they are doing and put it in your game and work on it.”
“When you have the opportunity at an important time, you have to take it. As a striker, you need to score goals,” reasoned the 20-year-old Super Eagles new found striker.
But Ezeh was quick to add that his pal is a fast learner and would carry on scoring for both club and country, adding that Iheanacho likes to mingle with guys who can make him better.
“I think he (Iheanacho) will keep on scoring goals for Manchester City and the Super Eagles because he can adapt well to every situation,” Ezeh explained. “He likes being with cool people and of course, he doesn’t like those who brag and people that talk too much.
“He has a simple life style; he’s a very good Christian for that matter
“Of course, from day one he has been a very good player and I’m really happy about his rising profile with Manchester City,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ezeh has been raking up his career after he was side-lined with injuries for months and he opined that he was enjoying a new lease of life in the Portuguese second division with Portimonense SC along with another Nigerian and former U-20 fringe player, Fidelis Irhene.
Ezeh said: “Yea, I thank God that I’m back after my arm surgery because It had not been easy. Because I actually missed preseason but I’m back on my feet again due to prayers and hard work.
“I missed a lot due to the injury that kept me out of the game for over seven months; missing a day of training when season is on was just too much. I started feeling the pains in my right leg but I managed it till the end of the last season before I underwent a successful operation.
“So, after the operation, it took me some time to bounce back but I’m focussed on what I’m doing.
“My goal has always been to be at the top since I came to Europe and as you know, Rome was not built in a day, and I’m taking my time too.
“No matter where I am, I always like winning. Winning (the league) with the junior team of FC Porto when I was there was very sweet. I’m on loan to a second division side Portimonense SC here in Portugal and I’m feeling at home here,” noted the ever-smiling youngster that cut his teeth at Riverlane Football Academy in Enugu.
    EZEH ON HIS HUMBLE BEGINNING
I’m from a family with four children and we are three boys and a girl. I’m the second born. I would have loved to become a priest. I mean I would have gone to seminary school to become a priest because I really wanted to serve God as a priest. But during that time, I think that was when I was in primary six, I was not able to sit for the examinations to go to the seminary and that was how and why I turned my attention to football.
    EZEH THOUGHTS ON PRIESTHOD
I had passion to be a priest in the church but since I could not achieve it, I’d planned to study Business Admin in university as a course. I could not get the form to write the exam (for priesthood) in my primary six and then my football started coming out to reality. Later, I decided to understudy one of the powerful priests known as Reverend Father Mbaka because he serves as an inspiration then because of the miracles he performs but I was denied the opportunity of becoming his
servant since I lived far from the church and I said I will never join another parish except his own. So, I decided to focus on my career.
EZEH THOUGHTS ON SLEEP & FOOD
If you keep food and sleep, I will take sleep because I love it. I also like swimming, reading and playing music. I dislike lies and liars. I don’t like to be with someone who is not straight forward. Oh! Sleeping makes me stronger by the day and also helps me to grow; it also improves my momentum (sharp thinking).
    EZEH ON INSPIRATION
I admire Ronaldo de Lima, Ibrahimovic and Thomas Muller. They play the kind of game that I like and I really appreciate their style of playing. In Nigeria, I admire players like Obafemi Martins and Ike Uche because they are good strikers and they have really shown their qualities in every club they have been.
EZEH ON BEING PART OF 2013 FIFA U-17 WORLD CUP WINNING TEAM
I actually started playing from midfield but I switched upfront because I was too small when I joined the Under-17 and there were more powerful guys in the midfield than me and was pushed to play as a second striker-which is my favourite position. My thanks go to coach Manu Garba, Nduka Ugbade and Emmanuel Amuneke who made me to be versatile in the frontline. I can play anywhere in the front line now. I will never forget them. Even now it is still a dream that I played in that squad that lifted the trophy. As small as I was then, I started in three of the matches. I think it’s an encouragement to me and my career and I can say that it was the three games I started that landed me in Europe. It is always a great feeling to be part of that team and I’m so happy to make a name in that squad.
EZEH ON FOND FRIENDSHIP WITH IHEANACHO
I was very happy when I was informed that both of us, I mean Kelechi and I, were going to join FC Porto because he was like a blood brother since our days in the national Under-13 team. We were like inseparable because anywhere you saw him, I was always there to the extent that some called us twins. As such, I felt very sad when he told me about his change of mind because of other family issues and I almost cried because I felt both of us were always destined to be together
We had the dream of playing in the same club together but now we are far from each other. I really miss him but I think in life, we have to face what it brings. So, here I’m in Portugal and Kelechi is with Manchester City, but all the same, I’m thanking God for his grace in my life. God will see us through in our respective careers; he is doing great at Manchester City and I’m praying for him always since we are just starting the race in our careers.

  • Iheanacho rejoins Man City

    Iheanacho rejoins Man City

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho took part in Manchester City’s training session on Tuesday after helping Nigeria  secure a 3-1 win over Algeria in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Saturday.

Iheanacho featured for 90 minutes for the Eagles but failed to find the back of the net at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo as Nigeria won successive games to remain on top of Group B with maximum points.

The 20-year-old took part in Tuesday’s session at the Manchester City training ground as they prepare for their Premier League game against Crystal Palace this weekend under the watchful eyes of City manager, Pep Guardiola and his assistant, Mikel Arteta.

It was however a depleted squad that saw the return of injured players as The Citizens await players still on international duty.

Bacary Sagna has returned to full training after five weeks out with a hamstring tear and will be in contention for the game at Selhurst Park.

Tuesday’s session also featured Yaya Toure, who is also back in contention for a place in the City team after apologising for comments made by his agent, Dimitri Seluk.

Other first team players in training include Spanish duo of Jesus Navas and Aleix Garcia, Fernando Reges and Pablo Zabaleta .
