IHEANACHO MAKES HISTORY AS CITY WINS MANCHESTER DERBY

KELECHI Iheanacho became the first Nigerian player to score an English Premier League goal in the Manchester derby, Saturday, when Manchester City defeated Manchester United 2-1.

Kevin de Bruyne’s cool finish and Kelechi Iheanacho’s tap-in after the Belgian hit the post put City in complete control as they outclassed Mourinho’s Manchester United for most of the opening 45 minutes.

Pep Guardiola also emerged victorious from his first Premier League battle with old adversary Jose Mourinho as Manchester City secured a fully deserved win in a frantic Old Trafford derby.

United were handed a lifeline just before the break when City’s debutant keeper Claudio Bravo summed up his desperately uncertain display by dropping a free-kick to allow Zlatan Ibrahimovic to pull a goal back.

They mounted an aerial siege in front of the Stretford End but City held firm to maintain their position at the top of the table, coming closest to scoring when De Bruyne struck an upright from Leroy Sane’s pass. The long-time rivalry – and acrimony – between former Real Madrid manager Mourinho and ex-Barcelona boss Guardiola meant this fixture was ringed on the calendar from the moment it was announced.

A truce was called in the build-up to the game as Guardiola announced he would accept an invitation for a post-match glass of wine with Mourinho and there was an embrace when they met before kick-off.

And when the game started, Guardiola stalked his technical area, micro-managing every moment of City’s approach, while Mourinho crouched and made notes as the game progressed.

The Spaniard will have been delighted to see such early superiority, a magnificent first 40 minutes of clinical passing and movement leaving United’s midfield, including £89m world record buy Paul Pogba, as virtual passengers.

It was only that moment of indecision from Bravo that disrupted City – and Guardiola’s congratulations for his players at the end were also an expression of delight for their resilience when the going got tough late on.

He showed his willingness to shore things up when he sent on Fernandinho for Iheanacho – but it was not such a good day for Mourinho.

Iheanacho’s super strike stuns Tanzania in Uyo

WATCHED by capacity crowd at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, the Super Eagles have begun the reigns of head coach, Gernot Rohr, with a 1-0 victory over the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in a 2017 AFCON qualifier yesterday.

Over 30,000 fans were at the stadium to cheer the Eagles in the dead rubber fixture with both teams already out of next year’s AFCON slated for Gabon and after waiting patiently for 78th minutes they were rewarded with a spectacular strike off the boot of Manchester City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho whose 25 yard well weighed-in shot sailed past impressive Tanzanian goalkeeper.

The Eagles started the match on a fast lane in the first half and had golden opportunity to take the lead in the opening five minutes but Odion Jude Ighalo and Victor Moses were guilty of missed chances.

The Tanzanians did not lie low waiting for the Eagles to capitalise and after early gilt edge chances wasted by the  Nigerian senior national team they came out of their shell and forced Eagles’

goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme to make some decent saves.

The Nigerian team dominated the game for a long spell but they were uncoordinated in front of goal but the Eagles played as a unit and the decision of the head coach, Rohr to invite the team’s best legs because of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers seemed to have paid off.

The tempo of the game changed dramatically after the Eagles got the lone goal as Nigeria emerged as second best in the group with five points from four matches and five points adrift of group leaders, Egypt who are on 10 points while Tanzania are last with a point from four games.

It was the first time Eagles have had the maximum points at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, since it was commissioned three years ago.

Iheanacho fit to face West Ham – Guardiola

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Kelechi Iheanacho will be available for selection against West Ham United on Sunday.

The forward looked to suffer a hamstring injury after going down in pains after attempting to chase a ball through in the Citizen’s 1-0 victory over Steaua Bucuresti in Wednesday’s Champions League play-off.

Having missed Thursday’s drill, Iheanacho returned to Manchester City training on Friday and the Spaniard says the prodigy has no injury scare and will be set for the Hammers.

“No injuries from midweek. Kelechi was almost nothing so it was a scare but he’s fine,” Guardiola told journalists at his pre-match press conference.

“Everybody’s fit and ready – we trained with 30 players today.”

City are in dire need of a win against ninth-placed West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium to remain at the summit of the English topflight.

With this Iheanacho will be available selection for Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania billed for September 3, 2016.

    Iheanacho signs new contract

Nigeria international Kelechi Iheanacho has signed a new two-year contract extension with Manchester City to extend his stay at the club until 2021, the Premier League side announced on Thursday.

The 19-year-old established himself in the City first team last season, scoring 14 times in all competitions including eight goals in 26 Premier League outings.

He also took his maiden steps in the Champions League—making four appearances as City registered their best ever finish in the competition, a semi-final berth.

This season, much is expected of the teenage hitman under Pep Guardiola, with the forward tipped to progress and develop his game under the tutelage of the Spanish coach.

Iheanacho has already made an impact during a brief cameo appearance against Sunderland, when he pressured Black Cats debutant Paddy McNair into scoring an own goal to give the Citizens a 2-1 victory in Guardiola’s first match.

The new contract is a demonstration of just how highly the club and Guardiola think of Iheanacho, particularly considering the largescale changes that the Spanish coach is expected to implement at the Etihad Stadium.

Meanwhile, new Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has revealed his first impressions of Kelechi Iheanacho and explained why the teenage forward has been handed a contract extension.

The Citizens confirmed on Thursday that the wonderkid had been awarded a new deal which keeps him at the Etihad Stadium until 2021.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Guardiola acknowledged just how highly he believes Iheanacho can go in the game.

He scored some wonder goals last season. We rank his best of 2015/16!

“Kelechi is a natural goal-scorer,” the former Barcelona manager told the club’s official website. “I knew about him before, but I’ve been really impressed with him since I arrived.

“I like his personality, his attitude, his ability – we hope to help him reach the highest level and to realise his full potential.”

Iheanacho shone last term—his first significant opportunity to shine in the Premier League—scoring 14 goals in all competitions, as well as finding the net eight times in 26 appearances in the top flight.

Guardiola certainly knows a fine young talent when he comes across one, having played a critical role in the development of Lionel Messi at Barcelona and of Thomas Muller at Bayern Munich.

While many players in the City squad face uncertain futures, with Pep given license to oversee wholescale changes at the club, it would appear as though Iheanacho has the manager’s seal of approval!

•Pays tribute to Pellegrini, City fans

Super Eagles star Kelechi Iheanacho was left overwhelmed by the success of his debut season in the premier league and hailed outgoing Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini and the fans following their amazing support.

The 19-year-old was drafted to the senior team by the former Real Madrid manager and he excelled in pre-season, scoring against AC Milan and Roma.

Pellegrini showed faith in him by offloading Stevan Jovetic and Edin Dzeko to Inter Milan and AS Roma on loan respectively, and constantly played him ahead of £30m Ivorian international Wilfred Bony.

Iheanacho repaid that faith by scoring 14 times in all competitions for the Citizens including the goal in the 1-1 against Swansea on the final day of the Premier League season which helped City secure Champions League qualification.

”Huge thanks to Manuel Pellegrini. Thank you for believing in me. I wish you the very best for the future,” he wrote on his official twitter account.
