  • Fashion designer jailed for theft, attempted murder

    An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court Thursday sentenced a 35-year-old fashion designer, Saka Alao to two years imprisonment for stealing and attempting to kill one Mr Aminu Abubakar.

    Chief Magistrate, Mr A.A. Fashola convicted Alao after he pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him by the Police.

    Chief Magistrate, Fashola said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar acts.

    Alao, resident at 15, Amuje, Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos was arraigned before the court on a four-count-charge of conspiracy, stealing, assault and attempted murder.

    Prosecuting Sergeant (Sgt.) Michael Unah had earlier told the court that the defendant assaulted Abubakar and attempted to murder him by pushing him into a moving vehicle on the Expressway, thereby causing him fracture on his left leg.

    Sgt. Unah said the defendant committed the offences with others still at large on April 28 about 8.30 p.m. at Ijaiye Bus Stop, Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway.

    He said that the defendant also stole Abubakar’s cell phone valued at N11, 000.

    He said Abubakar was repairing his truck which broke down on the Expressway when the defendant suddenly pounced on him and stole his phone.

    He said a struggle ensued between them, in the process of which he said the defendant pushed is victim into an on-going vehicle on the highway.

    He said the car hit the complainant and broke his left leg.

  • Woman allegedly pours hot pot of rice on policewoman

    A 29-year-old housewife, Mary Simon, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly pouring hot pot of rice on her neighbour, a policewoman.

    Simon, whose resides at Block 6, Flat 3, Mopol 20 Barracks in Lagos, is facing a charge of assault to which she pleaded not guilty.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Unah, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 11 at 2.00 p.m. at her residence.

    Unah said the defendant assaulted the complainant, Insp. Justina Yohana, by pouring boiling pot of rice on her backside, after a misunderstanding.

    He said the complainant went to the defendant’s house with her friend and demanded the reason she abused her while she was passing by.

    “The complainant beat the defendant out of anger and the defendant retaliated by pouring the pot of rice she was cooking on her.

    “The incident caused grievous injuries on the complainant,” he said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence contravenes Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 and attracts three years imprisonment if convicted.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr A.A. Fashola, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    Fashola ordered that the surety must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    He added that the surety must be blood relatives of the defendant and should live within the court’s jurisdiction.

    The case was adjourned until May 22.

  • Court remands man for sexually assaulting ten-year-old girl

    An Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos on Friday ordered that a 45-year-old man, Celestine Onwusonye, who allegedly assaulted a 10-year-old girl be remanded in prison.

    Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat, who did not take the plea of the defendant, ordered that the defendant be remanded in Kirikiri Prison.

    Sule-Amzat ordered the police to send the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    He adjourned the case until June 3.

    The defendant, who resides in Oregun area of Ikeja, Lagos, is facing a charge of  unlawful sexual assault .

    Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Asp. Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 19, at 11 p.m. No 2/3 Kudirat Abiola way, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos.

    Emuerhi alleged that the defendant sexually assaulted the girl.

    He said the case was reported to the police at Isokoko Police Division by the girl’s mother.

    The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

  • Furniture maker arraigned for illegal possession of firearm

    A furniture maker Olalekan Sanni, 27, was Monday arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for unlawful possession of firearm.

    Sanni, of no fixed address is facing a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearm before Chief Magistrate, Mrs M. I. Dan-Oni.

    Prosecuting Inspector (Insp.) Victor Eruada, told the court that Sanni committed the offences on March 20, at 1:30 p.m. at Olateju, Alaka in Mushin, Lagos.

    He was alleged to have committed the offence with others still at large,

    Eruada alleged that the defendant was caught by the police with an unlicensed locally-made single barrel pistol and three cartridges.

    He said that the defendant could not give satisfactory explanation when asked how he came about the gun.

    Sanni however denied the charge.

    Chief Magistrate, Mrs Dan-Oni, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She adjourned the case till April 30.

  • Three lawyers accused of assaulting EFCC detective

    Three lawyers were yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operative in the line of duty.

    The lawyers were said to have obstructed the operatives from arresting a former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja branch, Yinka Farounbi, on March 4.

    They are Lateef Abdulsalam, 55, Evans Okwuede, 45, and Abiodun Kolawole, 48.

    The defendants, who are all members of the Ikeja NBA,  are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, resisting a public officer and assault before Chief Magistrate O. A. Layinka.

    They were alleged to have assaulted Mrs. Patience Kalu during the monthly meeting of Ikeja NBA.

    Prosecuting Inspector Akeem Raji alleged that the defendants assaulted Mrs. Kalu while trying to arrest Farounbi, over allegations of financial misappropriation.

    Raji claimed that the defendants injured Kalu on her hand and neck.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Layinka granted them N100,000 bail with one surety each in the like sum.

    She said the sureties must be lawyers and provide their NBA seal as proof.

    The case continues on May 15.

     

  • Two clerics charged with forcing housemaid to swallow iron cross 

    A prophet and a prophetess were yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly forcing a 16-year-old domestic staff to swallow an iron cross.

    Kehinde Salami, 25, and Yetunde Akinola, 42, are facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, breach of the peace, false pretences and attempted murder before Chief Magistrate T. A, Ojo.

    They pleaded not guilty.

    The defendants allegedly made the maid to swallow the cross in order to cleanse her of witchcraft.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Kenrich Nomayo said the defendants committed the offence on March 24 at their Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos home.

    He alleged that they attempted to kill their victim by forcing her to swallow the cross against her wish.

    The defendants, Nomayo added, conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace when they claimed to see a vision in which the complainant was alleged to be a witch.

    He said the defendants gave the complainant the cross to swallow on the pretext that they were delivering her from witchcraft.

    The state of the complainant’s health, he said,  was unknown, as she is in an undisclosed hospital.

    Chief Magistrate Ojo granted them N200,000 bail with one surety each in the like sum. He ordered that they be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons until they meet their bail conditions.

    Ojo ordered that the case file be duplicated and sent to Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    The case continues on April 30.

  • Businesswoman held over alleged possession of firearms

    A 35-year-old businesswoman, Rose Eitus, who was allegedly in possession of one locally-made single barrel short gun, yesterday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    Eitus, who loves at 6, Agboworin Street, Ketu, Ijanikin in Lagos, was arraigned on a two-count-charge of conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Michael Unah alleged that the defendant conspired with others still at large, unlawfully having in their possession a locally-made gun with one live cartridge.

    Unah said Eitus could not give a satisfactory account of how she came about the firearms.

    The prosecutor said the defendant committed the offences on February14 at 10.00 p.m., at her home.

    “A team of police officers got information that a group of boys were smoking Indian hemp at the defendant’s shop.

    “This generated fear in the neighborhood and the police officers were alerted.

    “The said boys took to their heels upon sighting the police from afar, while the defendant was arrested after a gun with one live cartridge was found behind her freezer,’’ he said.

    Chief Magistrate A.A. Fashola granted the defendant N200,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    He said the sureties must be employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have their addresses verified by the court.

    The magistrate said the sureties must be relatives of the defendant and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

    The case continues on April 16.

     

  • Dad remanded for alleged sexual abuse of daughter

    An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court yesterday remanded a 38-year-old electrician, Chukwueke Ashiedu, following his arraignment for allegedly defiling his 17-year-old daughter.

    He will be in custody, pending advice by Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Chief Magistrate Olufunke   Sule-Amzat adjourned till April 25 for the advice after declining to take the defendant’s plea.

    Prosecuting Inspector Benson Emuerhi said the defendant committed the offence on November 20, 2015  in his Ikorodu, Lagos home.

    “He defiled his 17-year-old daughter by having carnal knowledge of her,” he said.

    The victim, accompanied by her teacher and school coordinator Mr Lekan Akinborode reported the case at the Gender Section of Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, Emuerhi said.

    The defendant, he alleged, started the sexual assault four years ago.

  • Sexagenarian docked over alleged robbery of N15m goods

    n Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, remanded a 61-year-old scrap collector, Rotimi Ariremako, charged with robbery, in Kirikiri Prisons.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola, ordered the remand pending advice from Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the state, on the case.

    Fashola ruled that a duplicate copy of the case file should be sent to DPP, and adjourned the case until April 22.

    Ariremako, whose residential address was not provided, was alleged to have attacked a bus driver and disposed him of the bus laden with goods valued at N15 million.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Unah, had told the court that the defendant and his gang now at large, attacked the driver of a J5 bus with number plate EPE 476 UX, carrying 169 cartons of assorted items.

    He said that the consignment included eight cartons of new shoes, 150 cartons of bitters, three cartons of hair attachment, three cartons of plates and two sacks of men’s boxers, all worth N15 million, property of Mr Paul Ekwu.

    He said that after robbing the driver of the bus, the defendant drove it to an unknown destination.

    “They also took the driver’s phone which was used in tracking down the suspect,” he said.

    The prosecutor said that the defendant committed the offence on Nov. 9, 2018 at about 5.30 p.m. along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 297(1) and 297(2)(a) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that both Sections stipulate 21 years imprisonment for offenders.

    In his defence, Ariremako, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    He, however, said that he picked the phone from the ground without a sim in it, adding that he did not make a report at the police station for fear of being tagged a thief. (NAN)

  • Woman accused of slapping ex-stepmother

    A 28-year-old woman, Amaka Okolie, who allegedly slapped her ex-stepmother and destroyed her necklace worth N190, 000 during an argument, has appeared at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Okolie, whose lives at 4, Taiwo Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos, is charged with two counts of assault and wilful damage.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecution alleged that the defendant slapped her ex-stepmother, Mrs. Ngozi Okolie, tore her dress and cut her gold necklace valued at N190, 000, during an argument over the complainant’s refusal to leave her father’s apartment.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Michael Unah alleged that the defendant committed the offence on February 18, about 8:40am, at her residence.
