  • Woman docked for flogging man with wire

    A 28-year-old woman, Aishat Akande, who allegedly flogged a man with a wire was on Wednesday docked before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, an hair dresser, who resides at 7, Somoye St., Ijaiye, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and assault.

    The Prosecutor, ASP Clifford Ogu, told the court that the offences were committed on June 19 at Ijaiye in Lagos.

    Ogu said that Akande and others at large allegedly flogged one Mr Sunday Adeko for urinating beside a shop in their domain.

    He said that the accused and others allegedly descended on him and flogged Adeko with wire, adding that in the course of beating him, the wire heat Adeko in his eyes and blood gushed out of his eyes.

    Ogu said that during police investigation, the accused said that the residents of the area had warned passersby to desist from urinating on the spot because of it’s odour.

    He told the court that by the act, the accused and others had taken laws of the land into their hands.

    Ogu said the offences contravened Sections 246 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr J. A Adegun, granted the accused bail of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Adegun adjourned the case until July 10 for mention.

  • Fake spiritualist in court for defrauding woman of N1.5m

    A 31-year-old man, Christian Chima, who allegedly obtained N1.5 million from a woman on the pretence of solving her spiritual problem, was on Monday arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, who resides in Oluseesi St. in Balogun area of Iju, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy, obtaining under false pretences and stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Clifford Ogu, told the court that the offences were committed between Feb. 25 and May 10 at Iju Ishaga, Lagos.

    Ogu said that the complainant, Miss Olubunmi Olojido, met the accused in a taxi and from there they got talking.

    “The accused told the complainant that she needed to clean herself from the evils of the world and invited her to an uncompleted building for ‘cleansing.’

    “The accused obtained N1.5 million from her within three months on false pretences of getting her black soap for protection,” he said.

    Ogu further told the court that the complainant regained her senses after she had given the money to the accused.

    “The case was reported at the police station and the accused was arrested while the other accomplice is still at large,” he added.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 287, 313 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr J. A. Adegun, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Adegun adjourned the case until June 19, for mention.

  • Teacher arraigned for defiling minor

    A 36-year-old teacher, Lilian Ahaneku, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly inserting three pencils in the private parts of her six-year-old pupil.

    Ahaneku, who resides at 6, Alhaji Gudus Giwa St., Eyita, Ikorodu, Lagos State, is facing a charge of indecent assault.

    Police Prosecutor Christopher John told the court that the offence was committed on April 24 at Zion Saint Nursery and Primary
    School premises at No. 70, Ijokoro St., Ikorodu.

     John alleged that the accused invited the six-year-old girl to one of the empty classrooms during school hours and assaulted her.

    “The accused, thereafter, inserted the pencils in the private parts of the girl, she started bleeding and he used handkerchief to
    clean the blood.

    “The girl was having serious pains on her private parts and she told her mother what Ahaneku did to her,” John said.

    When the complainant, Mrs Blessing Hassan, confronted the accused, he denied it and the case was reported at the
    police station.

    The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused denied the charge.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr P.E. Nwaka, granted the accused a bail of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the
    case until June 13.

  • Court remands ex-convict in prison over robbery

    An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday remanded a 22-year-old ex-convict, Sodiq Kolade, in prison for allegedly robbing a man of valuables worth N44, 000 at gunpoint.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs F. Williams, who gave  the ruling, said the accused should be kept in Kirikiri Prisons pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    She directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the DPP.

    The accused, who is unemployed, is a resident of No. 16, Kano St., Oyingbo, Ebute Meta on Lagos Mainland.

    He is facing a two-count charge bordering on armed robbery.

    Earlier, Police Prosecutor Nomayo Kenrich told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large on April 14 at 4.30 a.m. at No. 78, Kadara St., Oyingbo.

    Kenrich alleged that the accused, who was armed with a gun and an iron cutter, robbed a man, James Maduabuchi of his Techno phone valued at N22, 000 and N22, 000.

    “The complainant and his younger brother were baking pies when the accused suddenly entered and robbed them of their valuables.

    “The complainant raised an alarm and with the help of some passersby they were able to arrest the accused, while others ran away,” he said.

    The prosecutor said the accused, who had once been arrested for armed robbery, was recently released from Kirikiri Prisons in January.

    The offences contravened Sections 297(2) and 299(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 297 (2) prescribes 21 years jail term for offenders.

    The case has been adjourned until June 14 for DPP’s advice.

    Woman docked for slicing another woman’s face with razor

    A 20-year-old woman, Loveth Augustine, who allegedly cut another woman with a razor blade on the upper eyes, was on Tuesday arraigned at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, a student, who resides at 6, Adebisi St., Egbeda, suburb of Lagos, is being tried for assault.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Raji Akeem, told the court that the offence was committed on Feb. 20, at Royale Club, Oba Akran, Ikeja.

    Akeem said that a fight ensued between the accused and the complainant, Miss Motunrayo Fatai, at the night club at 1:00 am.

    “The accused beat her and used razor blade to cut the upper part of her right eyes which caused her deep cut on the place.

    “She was rushed to the hospital and was treated,” he said.

    The offence contravened Sections 170 and 173 of Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Chief Magistrate T. O Shomade granted the accused a bail of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He adjourned the case until March 28 for mention.

    Two friends in court for raping minor

    Two friends, Kehinde Ishau and Emmanuel Olamilekan, who allegedly gang raped a 14-year-old girl, were on Tuesday charged before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates Court, Lagos.

    The accused, both cobblers residing at 2, Ayanyinka St., Isolo, Lagos, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and rape.

    Police Prosecutor Clifford Ogu told the court that the accused committed the offences on January 1 at Isolo market, Lagos.

    Ogu said the victim was intercepted by the accused while on an errand to the market.

    “The accused dragged her to an uncompleted building behind the market and gang raped her.

    “She went home and told her mother what transpired, the accused were later arrested by the police,’’ he said.

    Ogu said the offences contravened Sections 259 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Akanni, granted the accused N150, 000 bail each with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Akanni adjourned the case until Febuary 7 for mention.

    Bus conductors in court for snatching purse from woman

    Two bus conductors, who allegedly snatched a purse containing N8,000 from a woman, were on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, Segun Omotoye, 18, resides at Iyana Ipaja area and Joel Ubah, 19, resides at Abule-Egba Road, are facing trial for conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Clifford Ogu, told the court that the offences were committed on Dec.15 at Iyana Ipaja under bridge.

    Ogu said that the accused snatched the purse of Mrs Tosin Ali while boarding a bus and they ran away.

    “The case was reported at the police station and to the vigilance group in the area.

    “The purse contained N8,000 and some vital documents of the complainant,” he said.

    Ogu said that the vigilance group later caught the accused in an uncompleted building at night.

    “An empty purse was found in their possession and the complainant identified it as her purse, when she was invited to where the accused were kept.

    “The accused were handed over to the police,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Akanni, granted the accused bail of N20,000 each with two sureties in like sum.

    Akanni adjourned the case until January 31 for mention.

  • Woman arraign for locking housemaid in toilet for 20 days

    Oyinyen Chuks, 34, was on Tuesday charged at Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State with  locking up her 14-year old housemaid in a toilet for 20 days.

    Chuks, a trader, who resides at 19, Ojo St., Shasha, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a four-count charge bordering on assault

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Raphael Donny, told the court that the offences were committed between May 2 and May 22 at the residence of the accused.

    Donny said that the accused alleged that the housemaid stole her money and beat her mercilessly.

    “The accused locked the girl inside her toilet, fed her once and didn’t allow her to take a bath or change her clothes for those weeks in bondage.

    “It was one of the neighbours who could not bear the torment anymore that informed the police”, he said.

    The prosecutor said that following the report, the police visited the house and found the girl in the condition.

    “Hence, the accused was arrested while the girl was taken to the hospital for treatment”, Donny said.

    The offences, he said, contravened Sections 171, 207, 245 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    However, Chuks pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against her.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Davies Abegunde, granted the accused N1million bail with two sureties in like sum.

    Abegunde ordered the accused to pay N200,000 into the Court Registrar ‘s account as part of the bail conditions.

    She adjourned the case until June 21 for mention.

    Teenager charged with raping seven year old girl

    A 14-year-old secondary school student, (name withheld) who allegedly defiled his neighbour’s seven-year-old daughter, is facing trial at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, who resides with his parents at 41 , Odo Oba St., Bariga, Lagos, is being tried for defilement.

    The accused, according to Police Prosecutor Raphael Donny, broke into the toilet where the underage girl was defecating and defiled her.

    He said the accused committed the offence sometime in December 2016 at their tenement building.

    “It was the cry of the girl that alerted the mother, who immediately rushed to the scene.

    “When the mother saw blood stains on the child’s clothes, she shouted and efforts to apprehend the boy were unsuccessful as he ran away from the house.

    “The case was reported at the police station while the boy was later sighted in Agege and arrested by the police.”

    The accused, however, denied the charge.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs D. Abegunde, admitted the accused to a bail of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Abegunde, however, ordered that the accused should be remanded in the Boys Correctional Centre, Oregun in Ikeja until when the bail condition would be met.

    Before adjourning the case until June 5, she directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.

    Boy in court over alleged burglary

    A 17-year-old boy, who allegedly burgled a residence and stole rice and jewellery valued at N275,000 was on Wednesday appeared at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The accused (name withheld), who resides at Agege, a suburb of Lagos is charged with burglary and stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Raphael Donny, told the court that the offences were committed on April 10, 2017, at 6, Oloko Lane, Agege, Lagos.

    Donny said that the accused burgled the residence of late Alhaja Afusat Amao to steal.

    “The accused stole half bag of rice and gold jewellery all valued at N275, 000, property of the late woman, who died few weeks ago.

    “The accused was apprehended by the members of the vigilance group in the area and he was brought to the police station,” he said.

    He told the court that the offences contravened Sections 278 and 307 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Davies Abegunde, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100, 000, with two sureties in like sum.

    Abegunde adjourned the case until May 31.
