  • Okada rider charged with beating up motorist

    A 32-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Rabiu Hassan, on Thursday appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, charged with blocking a motorist and beating him up.

    He pleaded not guilty before Magistrate J. A. Adegun.

    Adegun granted the defendant N100,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    He said the sureties should be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clifford Ogu said the defendant conspired with two others to beat up Daramola Ola without any reason on July 10 at Agege, Lagos.

    “The complainant was driving home when the defendant and others blocked his car with their motorcycles.

    “They dragged him down from his car, beat him up and used a motorcycle key to injure him.

    “When they saw blood gushing out of his body, they bolted.

    “A few days later, the complainant saw the defendant, and he was arrested,” the prosecutor said.

    The case continues on August 9.

  • Seven face N3.5m theft charge

    Seven persons, Daniel Obineye, Yinka Olawale, Rasak Badmus, Lauwahi Hassan, Shehu Bello, Iranloye Adebowale and Matthew Iyere, were on Tuesday arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing building materials worth N3.5million.

    Obineye, 36; Olawale, 55; Badmus, 49; Hassan, 28; Bello, 23; Adebowale, 51 and Iyere, 50, were also accused of buying stolen goods belonging to Sirius Construction Work Ltd.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ezekiel Ayorinde said the defendants committed the offence on July 6 at GRA, Ikeja.

    He alleged that the first two defendants stole the items and sold them to the other defendants.

    “The first two defendants, who were guards at the site, stole lengths and sizes of aluminum windows, stainless steels and scaffolding pipes.

    “When the site manager discovered that some materials were missing when he visited the site, the company conducted an audit through which it detected the actual number of materials stolen,” Ayorinde added.

    He said investigations showed that the first two defendants were the real culprits.

    “When the first two defendants were confronted, they confessed to the crime.

    “They led the police to arrest other defendants, who were the receivers and buyers of the stolen materials,” the prosecutor said.

    Magistrate B.O. Osunsanmi granted the defendants N200, 000 bail  with two sureties each.

    She said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case continues on September 18.

  • Cobbler arraigned for allegedly assaulting Uber driver

    A 32-year-old cobbler, Ibikunle Adeyemo, was on Wednesday arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting and stealing N90,000 from an Uber driver, Obinna Peter.

    Adeyemo, a resident of Isolo, was arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, assault and stealing before Magistrate M.O. Tanimola.

    Prosecuting Inspector Aondohemba Koti said the defendant committed the offences on May 30 at Ogunmokun Street, Mushin.

    He said the defendant and two others at large engaged the service of Obinna for a full day’s trip to Isolo for N30,000, but refused to pay him at the end of the day.

    He said when Obinna demanded payment, having driven his passengers to Isolo as agreed, the defendant and his accomplices beat him up, stole N90,000 from his car and ran away.

    The prosecutor said a few days after, the Uber driver saw the defendant, alerted the police and he was arrested.

    Adeyemo pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Tanimola admitted him to N100,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    He said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case continues on July 24.

     

  • BRT driver ‘kills woman, 25’

    Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, Theophilus Nsofor, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly killing a 25-year-old woman, Blessing Philip.

    Nsofor, who lives in Ijoko area of Ogun State, is facing a three-count charge of reckless driving, manslaughter and driving without particulars before Magistrate, Mrs M.I. Dan-Oni .

    Prosecuting Inspector Victor Eruada said Nsofor committed the offence on May 27, at Iyana-Ipaja by Danco Filling Station, Lagos.

    Eruada alleged that the defendant, who drove a BRT bus marked JJJ 152 XL, drove recklessly and caused the death of the woman.

    According to him, Nsofor drove on the public highway without a driver’s license, vehicle license, certificates of roadworthiness and insurance.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Dan-Oni granted him N100,000 bail with one surety in the like sum.

    She ordered that the surety must be gainfully employed and possess evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned till July 24.

    Also yesterday, a 21- year-old driver, Innocent Rufus was before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly kidnapping a woman and demanding N1million ransom.

    Rufus is charged with conspiracy, kidnapping and threat to life.

    Eruada said the defendant committed the offence on May 21 around 9pm at Kofoworola Street, Okupe Estate, Maryland, Lagos.

    He said the defendant conspired to kidnap a housewife, Mrs Margaret Barovbe and demand N1 million from her family.

    Eruada also alleged that Rufus threatened to kill Barovbe’s husband if he failed to pay the ransom.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Dan-On granted him N100,000 bail two sureties in the like sum.

    She adjourned till July 11.

  • Artisan ‘robs’ man of phones

    A 20- YEAR-OLD artisan, Ayuba Isah, was on Tuesday arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly robbing a man of his two phones worth N74,000 with a cutlass.

    Isah, who lives at Dopemu area of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge on conspiracy and stealing before Magistrate O.O. Ekundayo .

    Prosecutor Inspector Josephine Ikhayere said the defendant committed the offence on May 27 at Agege.

    According to her, the defendant and others now at large attacked the complainant and robbed him of his two phones with a cutlass.

    She said the complainant was going to work around 5am when the defendant and others allegedly approached him, threatened him with a cutlass and asked him to hand over his phones to them.

    She said the complainant, out of fear, handed over his phones to them.

    Inspector Ikhayere said a few days later, the complainant sighted the defendant and reported to the police who arrested him.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Ekundayo granted him N50,000 bail with one surety in the like sum.

    She ordered that the surety should be employed and show evidence of two years of tax payments to the government.

  • Medical scientist arraigned for alleged N4.5m fraud

    A 50-year-old medical scientist, Michael Adeh, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for alleged N4.5 million fraud.

    Adeh, who resides in Ketu, Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of stealing, obtaining money under false pretences and issuing a dud cheque before Magistrate Mrs O. O. Fagbohun.

    Prosecuting Inspector Emmanuel Ajayi had told the court that the defendant committed the offences in 2014 at Ikeja, Lagos.

    Ajayi said the defendant allegedly fraudulently obtained N4.5 million from Mr Chamberlain Okezie for the execution of a contract, which he knew was false.

    He added that after five years of receiving the money, the defendant did not pay back.

    Ajayi also said when the complainant mounted pressure on the defendant, he issued a cheque of N4.5 million, which was dishonoured by the bank due to insufficient funds.

    When the charges were read, the defendant pleaded not guilty to them. Magistrate Fadare granted him bail for N250,000 with two sureties in like sum. He adjourned the matter till June 19.

  • Car in reverse mode knocks down 4-year-old boy

    A 49-year-old driver, Adenowo Adeyiga, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, charged with knocking down a four- year-old boy fatally while reversing his car.

    The defendant, whose address was not given in court, is facing a three-count charge of reckless driving, manslaughter and driving without license to which he pleaded not guilty.

    The Prosecutor, Asp. Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 4, at 12.00 pm along Adura Gbemi Street, Casso Alagbado, Lagos.

    “Adeyiga drove a Toyota Camry car with registration number KTU 242 FC recklessly, causing the death of the boy,” he said.

    According to the prosecutor, the defendant was reversing the vehicle and in the process, the deceased was hit.

    The victim died on the spot.

    The offences contravened Sections 7 (1), 20 (1), and 28 (1) of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat, granted the defendant N500, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum, one of whom must be gainfully employed with an evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case until June 20 for mention.

  • Court remands man for allegedly defiling 12-year-old girl

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday ordered that a 35-year-old man , Theophilus Tyozenda, be remanded in prison for allegedly defiling a12-year-old girl.

    Magistrate P.E. Nwaka ordered that Tyozenda be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos, pending advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.

    Magistrate Nwaka who did not take the plea of the defendant, adjourned the case until May 24 for mention.

    Tyozenda, who resides at No.1, Agunmo St., Opposite Seven Star Filling Station, Amuwo Oke-afo, Badagry, Lagos, is charged with defilement.

    The Prosecutor, Inspector Christopher John, alleged that the defendant committed the offence on April 6, at 8.30 pm at his residence.

    John alleged that Tyozenda had sexual intercourse with the 12-year-old-girl without her consent.

    The offence contravenes the provisions of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, and is punishable with up to life imprisonment.

  • Pastor arraigned for ‘defrauding’ woman

    A 40-year-old pastor, John Apeh, yesterday in Lagos appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding a woman of N1 million.

    Apeh, who lives at Ipaja, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to two counts of stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.

    Prosecuting counsel Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ezekiel Ayorinde said the defendant committed the offence on March 28, at Anifowose, Ikeja, Lagos.

    He alleged that the defendant obtained N1million from Mrs. Funke Tola on the pretext of using the money to help her offset her debt.

    Ayorinde said the complainant had some “money issues” with her business partner and was arrested.

    He said the complainant wrote an undertaking to pay part of the money to her business partner.

    “The complainant was ill the day she was to make the first payment.

    “She transferred the money on agreement to the defendant, who is her friend and pastor, to help her deliver it to her business partner at the station.

    “After the defendant received the alert, he disappeared and efforts to retrieve the money failed,” the prosecutor said.

    He said the defendant was later arrested and handed over to the police.

    The offence, Ayorinde said, contravened sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Magistrate B.O. Osunsanmi admitted the defendant to N300, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case continues on July 3.

  • Pastor docked for defrauding woman of N1m

    A 40 -year-old Pastor, John Apeh, on Tuesday in Lagos appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding a woman of N1 million.

    Apeh, who resides at Ipaja, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to two counts of stealing and obtaining money under false pretenses.

    The Prosecution Counsel,  ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the defendant committed the offenc on March 28, at Anifowose, Ikeja, Lagos.

    He said that the defendant unlawfully obtained N1million from Mrs Funke Tola with pretext of using the money to help her offset her debt.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 carries three years imprisonment for stealing while section 314 attracts 15 years for obtaining money under false pretenses.

    Magistrate B.O Osunsanmi admitted the defendant to bail in the sum N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Osinsanmi ordered that the sureties  must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case until July 3, for mention.
