  • Employees accused of stealing

    Lagos State Police Command on Thursday, at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, arraigned six employees, who allegedly stole raw pharmaceutical materials worth N30 million from a company.

    The police charged Ezekiel Effiong, 33, Olufemi Michael, 21, Tunde Olayiwola, 32, Lambo Kayode, 31, Blessing Balogun, 38 and Josephine Godwin, 38, with two counts of conspiracy and stealing.

    They pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Inspector Aondohemba Koti said the defendants committed the offence in January at Ladipo, Mushin, Lagos.

    He alleged that the defendants stole the raw materials belonging to Daily Need Industrial Group of Companies.

    Koti added that the management detected the theft following a tip-off.

    He said when the defendants were questioned, they did not denied it and they were handed over to the police.

    Magistrate M.O. Tanimola admitted the defendants to N200,000 bail each with two sureties each in the like sum.

    Tanimola said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case continues on May 8.

  • Butcher arraigned for ‘attempting to steal from church’

    A butcher, Rasheed Ayoola on Thursday appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly breaking into African Church, Lagos, with intent to steal.

    Ayoola, 27, who lives at No. 10, Ilogbo St., Ogun, is facing  charges of conspiracy and unlawful break-in.

    He, however,  pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Police prosecutor, Sgt. Samuel Ishola, told the court that the defendant committed the offences  with some persons still at large, on March 11, at 3:05 a. m., at Marina, Lagos.

    Ishola said the defendant unlawfully gained entry into the Church, but was caught before he could steal anything.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 307 stipulates three-year jail term for unlawful break-in, while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.

  • Four remanded for alleged robbery

    Four youths charged with robbing a man of his valuables worth N177, 000 were yesterday remanded in Kirikiri Prisons by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Chukwuani Amechi, 19; Adigun Lateef, 20; Gbadamosi Shuaibu, 18; and Uko Saviour, 19, are being tried for alleged conspiracy, arming themselves with offensive weapons and robbery.

    Magistrate J. A. Adegun declined to take their plea, pending advice by Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The defendants and others at large committed the offence on March 3 at Itire, Lagos, Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clifford Ogu told the court.

    He said the defendants armed themselves with weapons to rob Ismaila Saka of his belongings.

    “The defendants entered the shop of the complainant with cutlasses and bottles, commanding him to surrender his phones and cash, threatening to harm him.

    “They forcefully collected his four phones, valued at N139, 000 and N38, 000 cash totalling N177, 000 and ran away.

    “When the defendants were later arrested, they confessed that they have sold the phones,” the prosecutor said.

  • Court remands factory worker for defiling three year-old girl

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Monday ordered that a factory worker, Emmanuel Friday, who allegedly defiled a three-year-old girl be remanded in prison, pending legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    Magistrate B.O Osunsanmi, ordered that Friday be remanded in Kirikiri Prison.

    The plea of the defendant was not taken because the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

    “Based on the sensitivity of the case, it is difficult to grant bail. Bail will be the discretion of the court.

    “Case file should be documented and send to office of the DPP for advice,”she said.

    She adjourned the case until April 17.

    Friday, who resides at Ile-Epo, Abule-Egba, Lagos, is being tried for defilement.

    Police Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde alleged that the accused committed the offence on March 12 at his residence.

    He alleged that the defendant defined the three-year-old daughter of his neighbour.

    He alleged that the accused  The defendant lured the little girl into his room and sexually assaulted her.

    The mother , he said, reported the case and the defendant was sarrested.

    The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which prescribes life imprisonment for defilement.

  • Banker, 55, defiles girl, 8

    AN Ikeja Magistrates’ Court yesterday remanded in prison a 55-year-old banker, Titilayo Olatunji, following his arraignment for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl.

    Magistrate B. O. Osunsanmi refused to take the defendant’s plea when the case was called.

    She ordered that Olatunji be kept in custody, pending  advice by Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Osunsanmi adjourned till April 14.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ezekiel Ayorinde said the defendant committed the offence on February 19 at his home.

    He alleged that the defendant defiled his neighbour’s eight-year-old daughter.

    “The defendant called the girl into his room on the pretext of sending her on an errand.

    “When the girl entered, he locked the door and raped her.

    “The girl told her mother when she returned from work that she was feeling pains in her private parts.

    “The mother asked her who touched her sexual organ and she narrated to her mother what the defendant did to her,” the prosecutor said.

    Ayorinde said the girl was taken to a hospital where it was confirmed that she had been defiled.

    He said the case was reported and the defendant was arrested.

  • Trader arraigned for allegedly defiling girl

    A 30-year-old trader, Onyekachi Peter, has been arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl.

    The defendant, a resident of Oworonsoki, Lagos, was arraigned on a one-count charge bordering on defilement.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ezekiel Ayorinde said the defendant committed the offence on February 3 at his home.

    He alleged that the defendant unlawfully had carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old girl.

    The prosecutor said: “The girl’s father saw a love letter inside his daughter’s school bag. He read it and questioned her.

    “She confessed to her father that the defendant had slept with her many times.

    “When the father wanted to beat her, the girl ran to the defendant’s apartment and passed the night there. He again had sex with her.

    “The case was reported and the defendant was arrested,” the prosecutor said.

    Ayorinde said the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The defendant denied committing the offence.

    Magistrate Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi granted the defendant N300, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case continues on March 25.

  • Court remands man for alleged robbery

    A 23-year-old man, Rasheed Olanrewaju, who allegedly robbed and was caught in possession of two toy guns, was yesterday remanded at the Kirikiri Prisons by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    When the case was called for mention, Magistrate Akeem Fashola refused to take the defendant’s plea.

    He ordered that Olarenwaju be kept behind the bars, pending the receipt of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The defendant, who lives at Idimu, Lagos, is being tried for unlawful possession of toy guns and robbery.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Michael Unah said the defendant committed the offence on January 25 in Ikeja.

  • Council official arraigned for allegedly stealing N4m

    A worker with Mosan-Okunola Local Council Development Area (LCDA),

    Mr. Adebayo Akinbola, was yesterday arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing N4 million belonging to Mrs. Olabisi Adebajo, the LCDA chairman.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akinbola, 31, whose residential address was not provided, is facing a charge of stealing.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Peter Nwangwu alleged that the LCDA official committed the offence on February 6 between 3:30pm and 6pm at Guaranty Trust Bank, Alimosho, Lagos, branch.

    “He was sent on an errand to the bank by the complainant to withdraw N4 million.

    “After he withdrew the money, he absconded and was not seen for an unspecified period of time.

    “The matter was reported at Ikotun Police Station and after investigations, he was caught. He claimed to the police that he was kidnapped by unknown persons.

    “The money has, however, not been recovered from him,” Nwangwu said.

    Magistrate Yewande Aje-Afunwa granted the defendant N850,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She said the sureties should be employed and show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned till May 2.

  • 27-year-old tailor ’hits’ landlord with chair

    A 27-year-old tailor, Toheeb Rasaq, who allegedly punched his landlord and hit him with a chair, yesterday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The defendant is facing a three-count charge of breach of the peace, assault and causing grievous harm.  He pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Inspector Aondohemba Koti said the defendant committed the offence on November 4, last year, at his residence.

    He alleged that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by assaulting the complainant, Mr. Theophilus Afolayan.

    “The defendant assaulted the complainant with a chair, which caused grievous harm to his left eye,” Koti added.

    He said the complainant tried to settle a fight between the defendant and his wives.

    “The defendant turned to the complainant and punched him several times on the face.

    “He was not satisfied with the punches, he then used a chair and hit him on his eye,” the prosecutor said.

    Magistrate M.O. Tanimola granted the defendant N80,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She said the sureties should be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case continues on February 18.

  • Court remands pastor for defiling two boys

    A 28-year-old pastor, Seyi Adelana, who allegedly defiled two boys was on Thursday remanded at Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos, on the orders of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    When the case was called up, the magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi refused to take the plea of the accused.

    She ordered that the accused be kept behind bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Adelana, who resides at Igbogbo area of Ikorodu, Lagos, is being tried for defilement.

    The accused committed the offence between June and November 2018, at his residence, the prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde told the court.

    Ayorinde said that the accused unlawfully assaulted the boys, both 17 years old, by defiling them through their anus.

    He said that the accused was exposed when one of the boys was declared missing for four days.

    “During investigation, the boy, who was found with the accused, told his parents what the accused had been doing with him and his friend.

    “The parent reported the case to the police and the accused who has separated from his wife was arrested,” the prosecutor said.

    Ayorinde said the offence violated the provisions of Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the section prescribes life imprisonment for offenders.

    The case was adjourned until Feb.27 for mention.
