  • Man remanded for child defilement

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday remanded a 32-year-old man, Victor Martin, in Kirikiri Prisons for allegedly defiling a ten-year-old boy (names withheld).

    Magistrate (Mrs) Bola Osunsanmi, who issued the order, said Martin would remain in prison custody pending legal advice from the Director, Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Martin, who is resident at Shasha area of Lagos was arraigned on a lone count of child defilement before the court.

    Prosecuting Police Officer, Ezekiel Ayorinde, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) said the defendant committed the offence on December 1 at Ikeja, Lagos.

    ASP Ayorinde alleged that Martin allegedly assaulted the boy by having canal knowledge of him through his anus.

    The prosecutor told the court that the survivor was sent on errand by his mother to fetch firewood and that while carrying out the task, the defendant saw him and dragged him further into the woods and assaulted him.

    He said the defendant asked the survivor to cooperate and that he would give him money.

    According to him, the defendant allegedly inserted his manhood into the boy’s anus and forcefully had canal knowledge of him.

    He said a good samaritan traced the cry of the boy and caught the defendant in the act.

    He said the man quickly called the police who came to the rescue of the boy and the defendant was arrested.

    Magistrate Osunsanmi did not take Martin’s plea when the charge was read to him.

    She ordered him to be kept in Kirikiri Prison and adjourned the case till January 21 for mention.

  • Student docked for breaking into Redeem Church

    A 23-year-old student, Ademola Asaolu, on Monday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates ‘ Court for allegedly breaking into Solution Centre Redeem Church, Lagos State with intent to steal.

    Asaolu, whose address was not provided, is charged with two counts of breach of peace and breaking into a church.

    The Police prosecutor, Insp Rachael Williams, said that the accused, unlawfully gained entry into the Church, without the permission of the church authorities.

    Williams said the accused committed the offence on Dec. 13 at 8 p. m. at Animashahun Street, Baruwa-Ipaja, a Lagos suburb.

    The offence, she said contravened te provisions of sections 168 and 308 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015, (Revised).

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 308 stipulates three years for house-breaking while Section 168 provides six months for breach of peace.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. O. Akingbetese, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one responsible surety in like sum.

    Akingbetese ordered that the surety must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have his address verified by the court.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until Jan. 14 for mention.

  • Two traders allegedly beat up task force officials

    For allegedly beating two Lagos Task Force officials and causing bodily harm to them, two market traders were on Friday hauled up before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, Francis Azuka, 41 and Nwachukwu Alexander, 44,whose  residential addresses were not provided, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and breach of peace.

    The Police prosecutor Insp. Raphael Donny, told the court that the duo committed the offences on Nov. 7, at Super International Market, Abule-Egba in Lagos.

    He said that they conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause  breach of the peace.

    According to the prosecutor, the traders prevented one Adeyemi Olusegun and Akinyemi Rasheed, task force officials, from carrying out their lawful assignments.

    Donny alleged that the accused unlawfully beat up the complainants by giving them punches, which caused them bodily harm.

    He said that the complainants went to the said market to remind  traders to tidy up their environment when the accused suddenly beat them to a pulp, following an argument.

    “The complainants were sent on an official assignment to remind the traders of the regular environmental sanitation exercise.

    ‘The accused beat them after a disagreement,” he said.

    Both accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. B. O. Osunsemi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Osunsemi said that the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and should have their addresses verified by the court.

    The offences contravened Sections 168, 137 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The Section 137 provides three years for assault while Section 411 prescribes two years for conspiracy.

    The Magistrate adjourned the case until Jan. 30, 2019 for trial.

  • Factory worker docked for alleged theft of cables

    A factory worker, Sunday Shagidi, 24, was on Tuesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly stealing cables worth N360,000 from a company.

    The accused, who resides at 34, Church Avenue, Ketu, Lagos, was docked on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Sergeant Kenrich Nomayo, told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large, on Oct. 12, at Eleganza Company located at 33, Billings Way, Oregun, Ikeja.

    Nomayo said that the accused left his duty post in the company’s factory and trespassed into the store and stole the cables, valued at N360, 000.

    He said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Ojo, however, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She ordered that the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government, and adjourned the case until November 14.

  • Shopkeeper charged with stealing employer’s N403,000 goods

    A 26-year-old shopkeeper, Bisola Bello, on Friday appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court charged withstealing his employer’s N403,000 goods.

    The accused, who resides in Mushin, Lagos, is standing trial before Magistrate A. Ogundare, on a charge of stealing, an offence he
    has denied.

    Police Prosecutor Emmanuel Ajayi alleged that the accused committed the offence on Oct. 5 at Olumorokun Street, Mushin.

    According to him, the accused stole N403,000 belonging to his employer, Mrs Titilayo Fashina.

    “The complainant stocked her shop with goods and employed the accused to manage it.

    “The theft was discovered when the complainant came to audit the account and the shop … she discovered that goods worth
    N403,000 were missing,” he told the court.

    Ajayi said when the accused was questioned he could not give a satisfactory answer as to the missing goods.”She was arrested and handed over to the police.”

    The offence violated Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The section stipulates seven years imprisonment for offenders.

    The magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He said the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years’ tax payment and adjourned the case until
    Nov. 7 for mention.

  • Man breaks into shop, steals N180,000 goods

    A 28-year-old man, John Ekemini, who allegedly broke into a shop and stole goods worth N180,000, was on Wednesday arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Ekemini, whose address was not provided, was docked for shop-breaking and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Mike Unah, told the court that Ekemini committed the offence on Aug. 5 by 06:00a.m, at No. 1, Jonathan Coker Road, New Oko-Oba, Agege in Lagos.

    Unah said that the defendant broke into the shop of the complainant, Mrs Kehinde Fasasi, in the early hours of the same day to steal the goods.

    “Ekemini stole an LG plasma television valued at N65,000, three gas cylinders valued at N30,000 and some cloths valued at N90,000.

    The prosecutor said that the defendant was caught while trying to escape with the stolen items by the vigilance team in the Area.

    Ekemini, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

    The offence contravened Sections 287 and 309 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The Section 287 stipulates a seven-year jail term for offenders, while Section 309 provides three years for shop-breaking.

    The Magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola, admitted him to a N50,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

    Fashola said that the surety should be gainfully employed, with evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos state government.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until Sept. 12, for hearing.

  • Landlord arraigned for allegedly flogging married woman

    Wilson, a businessman, who resides at Ahmadiyya, Meiran, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for assault.

    The accused allegedly committed the offence on July 7 at his residence, the prosecutor, Sgt Godwin Awase,  told the court.

    He said that the accused assaulted Mrs Victoria Obioha, his tenant, by flogging her with the belt which resulted in some bruises on her body.

    “The complainant washed and spread her husband’s police uniform and belt on a clothesline.

    “The accused removed the clothes where the complainant hung them and seized them because there was an argument over where the clothes were spread.

    “The complainant ran after him in order to retrieve the uniform and belt before  entering his  apartment.

    “But the accused turned on her and used her husband ’s belt to flog her several times all over her body, resulting in injuries.

    “The uniform and belt are still with the accused.

    “The case was reported and the accused was arrested,” the prosecutor said.

    The offence, he said,  contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes three years jail term for assault.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty and the Magistrate, Mrs F.F. George,  granted him bail on self-recognition.

    She adjourned the case till Friday.

  • Court remands mechanic in Kirikiri for stealing

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Mr T. O. Ojo, presiding over the case, however, fixed Aug. 10 for judgment following plea of guilty by the accused.

    The accused, whose residential address was not provided, is facing a four-count charge bordering on stealing and house-breaking.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Nomayo Kenrich, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Aug. 2 at 2.00a.m. at No. 9 Ogungbeye St., Olowora in Ojodu area of Lagos.

    Kenrich said that the accused stole four cell phones valued at N120, 000, after he unlawfully broke into the room of the complainants, Yinusa Saheed, Christopher Obiti and Joel Oyewumi.

    “The accused broke into the room while the complainants were fast asleep and unplugged the phones from where they were plugged.

    He stole an Infinix Hot phone valued at N25, 000; one Tecno phone valued at N40, 000; one Blackberry Z10 phone valued at N25, 000 and one LG K7 worth N30, 000, totalling N120, 000.

    “He was caught after one of the complainants woke up and raised alarm,” the prosecutor said.

    The offences contravene Sections 287 and 308 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

  • Businessman docked for receiving stolen properties

    Ibe, 30, who is a resident of No. 44, Church St., Oshodi, Lagos, was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and receiving stolen properties.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Prosecutor, Police Insp. Peter Nwangwu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 16 at Arena Shopping Complex, Oshodi, Lagos, at 8.00 a.m.

    According to him, the accused and his accomplice, one Monday Ogbonna, who is still at large, specialised in vandalizing telecommunications installations, solar panels and stealing inverter batteries and accessories.

    “Ibe received 16 pieces of stolen inverter batteries from Ogbonna who is now at large, knowing same to have been stolen.

    “The accused was apprehended by the police at Mowo in Badagry on the outskirts of Lagos while trying to escape with the stolen items.

    “He was arrested in a Mazda car with registration number MUS 170 XW and could not give satisfactory explanation of the stolen items,’’ Nwangwu said.

    The offences contravened Sections 328 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 328 provides a seven-year jail term for receiving stolen property.

    Chief Magistrate Yewande Aje-Afunwa granted N300,000 bail to the accused with two responsible sureties in like sum.

    Aje-Afunwa said that the sureties must be blood relations of the accused, adding that they should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government

    The case was adjourned until Aug. 13 for mention.

  • Court remands three men for allegedly robbing woman

    Three unemployed men were on Friday remanded in Kirikiri Prisons on the orders of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly robbing a woman at gun point.

    The accused men are Righteous Ejiaru, 24; Sadiq Raheem, 21, and Opeyemi Hassan, 20.

    Chief Magistrate Mr A.A. Fashola, who gave the ruling, said the three men should be kept behind bars, pending an advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.

    The accused people, whose residential addresses were not provided, are facing a two-count charge of robbery and conspiracy.

    Earlier, the Prosecuting Counsel, Police Sgt. Michael Unah, told court that the three men committed the offences on April 24 at 6.00 a. m. at Amuwo Odofin in Festac Town, Lagos.

    Unah alleged the accused conspired and robbed an unidentified woman at gun point.

    “The accused were caught by a mob that reported the case at a police station,” Unah said.

    According to him, the offences contravene Sections 297 (2) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Section 297 prescribes 21 years jail term for robbery, while Section 411 stipulates two years imprisonment for conspiracy.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until Aug. 13.
