  • Court quashes suit against Nwosu

The Appeal Court in Owerri, Imo State, on Thursday struck out a suit challenging the emergence of Uche Nwosu as the authentic Imo State governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) in the March 9 governorship elections.

Justice R.C Agbo ruled that the appeal was statute barred in line with the virtue of the 4th Alteration of the 1999 Constitution, Section 285(12).

The Plaintiff, Mr. Leonard Okolienta, had appealed the judgment of the lower Court, which earlier ruled that Nwosu was the authentic governorship candidate.

  • Hope for environmental upgrade in Imo

Owerri, the Imo State capital, was known as the cleanest state capital in the country. How things turned awry was surprising to the residents who want a reverse of the situation. Fortunately, things seem to be looking up as Governor Emeka Ihedioha promises environmental upgrade in Imo. OKODILI NDIDI reports that the governor, who said the government is deeply committed to a safe environment for the people, made the promise during this year’s World Environmental Day celebration.

Owerri, the Imo State capital is said to be an eyesore. This is because of the garbage heaps which litter almost every street in the city. To many residents, Owerri now appears to be the home of refuse dumps, with an outbreak of an epidemic seriously looming if nothing is done to address the situation.

Close to three years after the city was adjudged as one of the dirtiest cities in Nigeria, the environmental state of Owerri is yet to improve for the better. Rather, it is attracting the tag as the dirtiest state capital in the country. The city is still grappling with indiscriminate dumping of refuse and lack of sanitation exercises. But there is hope in the horizon as the state has a new governor who may remedy the situation.

There are strong indications that environmental challenges in Imo State will get the required attention this time around.

This much came to the fore during the 45th World Environmental Day, where the state governor, Emeka Ihedioha, who performed the tree planting ‘ritual’ to mark the global event, revealed that environmental protection will be one of the major policy thrusts of his administration.

Speaking during the event that held at the Government House, Owerri the governor noted that the celebration was a day set aside to create awareness on the dangers posed by human activities on the environment.

He said: “This is a day set aside for creating awareness and outreach on the dangers of today’s human activities on the environment and the urgent need to protect it for future generations. Environmental protection is a major trust of my administration”.

Continuing, he said: “We are deeply committed to a safe environment for our people. I hope that the significance of this event will not be lost on our citizens.

The United Nations, aware that the protection and improvement of the human environment is a major issue which affects the well-being and economic development of peoples throughout the world, designated June 5 as World Environment Day. This year’s celebration provides us with

an opportunity as a new administration to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, businesses and communities in preserving and enhancing our environment.

“This responsibility is binding and serious. Since 1974, the World Environment Day has grown to become a global platform for public outreach, widely celebrated in over 100 countries. What we do or fail to do with regard to our environment these days, favourably or adversely affects our future. Our children and their children will berate us if we permit the reckless abuse of our ecosystem. The world over, countries have set environmental protection agendas and milestones.

“Responsible governments are working assiduously to actualise them. Our legislature has, over time, enacted laudable protective environmental safety laws in concert with global best practices but past administrations have failed to implement them. This government shall act differently.

“To this end, our administration shall diligently strive to do the following, going forward, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as required by law shall become imperative for developmental projects in Imo State. All dredging activities on Nworie River and around the confluence of Nworie/Otamiri Rivers are hereby suspended until requisite EIA Reports by the dredgers are recertified.

“The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources shall resume its regular duty of regulating

    mining activities in the state.”

The governor also cautioned against the indiscriminate cutting down of trees, adding that, “all remaining forest reserves are to be protected, including, but not limited to the 9.68sq kilometer Ohaji Egbema Forest Reserve, Forest Reserves in Okigwe, Forest Reserves in Oguta, all

forest reserves in Mgbidi, all forest reserves in Orlu and all other forest reserves in other parts of the state.

“Our government shall take steps to preserve all forest reserves that have been devastated by

past political actors and shall be recovered and preserved to their intended and original purposes.”

The governor also promised that the ”botanical and zoological gardens shall be upgraded to Department of Wildlife and Nature Reserves in line with conventional national practices. This is to further enhance conservation of our wildlife and natural resources.

“Imo is hereby declared an environment-friendly state. All agencies responsible for waste management must be alive to their responsibilities. All ministries, departments and agencies saddled with requisite duties and responsibilities shall henceforth initiate damage-control measures on roads and communities threatened by gully erosion and irresponsible excavations. Our administration shall undertake aggressive erosion control measures.

“All encroachment into protected Watersheds and Green Belt Areas shall be recovered and restored in accordance with relevant laws protecting such facilities.

“We shall embark on an aggressive waste-to-wealth programme. We shall take appropriate steps to preserve and upgrade the Nekede Zoological Garden. Our administration is determined to return Imo State to its glory as the cleanest and most environment-friendly state in Nigeria.

This is in line with making Imo State the preferred tourist destination in Nigeria.

“Our geo-location confers upon us an advantage which we must take and enhance, not destroy and devastate. During my time in the National Assembly, I facilitated the building of a multi-million Waste Recycling Plant at Ilile, in Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Area.”

  • Nwosu to Ihedioha: focus on governance

The Imo State governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA), Uche Nwosu, has urged Governor Emeka Ihedioha to unfold his programmes for the people instead of embarking on a “wild goose chase”.

Nwosu, who was reacting to claims by the governor that his predecessor, Rochas Okorocha, did not do a proper handing over and so he was finding it difficult to take off, admonished the governor to jettison the excuses and focus on his campaign promises of rebuilding Imo.

According to him, the people are not interested in endless streak of excuses. He maintained that the actions of the governor assuming office “showed that he is not serious and does not seem to have any cut out plan or blueprint for governance, except the desperation to grab power”.

Nwosu said: “The people did not vote for him to start chasing shadows. For the time he will stay as the governor, he should unfold his plans and programme for the people. No one is interested in excuses, what the people want is performance and nothing less. The people want concrete statement on what the programmes of the government are, what the government intends to do and how it would deliver dividends of democracy to them, and not embarking on a mission to pull down Rochas Okorocha.

“Suspension of local government chairmen and their councillors, dissolving the recently-inaugurated members of boards of government agencies and parastatals, and scrapping of recently established tertiary institutions, is definitely a wrong way to start for a government that wants to make headway. One would have expected that by now, the governor should have engaged the civil servants and tell them what he has for the workers, as well as taken up from where his predecessor stopped.

“The acrimonies that could arise from these actions are hardly what Ihedioha needs at this time, he should rather consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor, and that is was what Imolites want to see. He should concentrate on the business of governance.

“If I were the governor today, I would face the business of governance knowing that there is job to do.”

  • Immortalise Kudirat Abiola, activists tell FG

Pro-democracy groups and civil society organisations (CSOs) on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to immortalise the late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, the wife of the winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, Bashorun M. K. O. Abiola.

Mrs Abiola was murdered in Lagos 23 years ago during her struggle to actualise the 1993 poll annulled by military President Ibrahim Babangida.

The activists, who gathered at the Ikeja home of the Abiolas to lay wreaths and offer prayers to the fallen amazon, demanded speedy conclusion of the suits against those standing trial for her murder.

Chairman of the proscribed National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (retd), said the late Kudirat sacrificed her life to make Nigeria better.

He urged Nigerians to ensure that the sacrifice was not in vain.

The former Imo State military governor enjoined lovers of freedom and democracy to live by the ideals she died for.

He said: “The most important thing now is to keep her ideals alive. We call on the relevant authorities to ensure poverty is banished, security must be provided, among others.

“Kudirat’s virtue has been extolled on many occasions, but I must say there was June 12 before June 4. Again, June 4 came about because of June 12. We must not allow her to die in vain.”

Rights activist Femi Aborishade said government must end poverty to make the honour bestowed on the late M. K. O. Abiola realistic.

He said government’s pronouncement on June 12 as Democracy Day falls short of expectations when the people have nothing to eat nor shelter over their heads.

“I know for certain that the poor are united in this country, but the power that be or the politicians have been working hard to keep us divided. They killed Kudirat because they believed she would preserve the unity of the downtrodden.

“They killed her because they didn’t want her to provide the example for others to learn from, that you can actually confront them and demand for your rights.”

Women Arise President Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin said government should immortalise Mrs Abiola by naming a national monument after her.

She added that the slain activist should be officially recognised as a first lady, noting that all insignia of office be given her posthumously.

According to her, Mrs Abiola died for humanity, and to banish poverty.

Her record in promoting democracy is unparalleled, Dr Okei-Odumakin said.

One of Kudirat’s children, Alhaji Jamiu Abiola, expressed the family’s appreciation for the efforts of pro-democracy groups to keep the memory of his late mother alive.

He said: “We see the pro-democracy groups as part of the Abiola family. Most of you have committed cash and kind to the struggle, just to keep the memory alive. This to us is the greater sacrifice.

“By this act, we call on everyone to support President Muhammadu Buhari’s fight against corruption. He cannot singlehandedly win the fight if other people stay aloof. We urge government officials and members of the National Assembly to join hands to deal with this monster. This is the major reason the people have continued to wallow in poverty.”

  • Imo Assembly mandates Ihedioha to probe Okorocha

The Imo State House of Assembly has mandated Governor Emeka Ihedioha to probe the activities of his predecessor, Rochas Okorocha.

The House, during a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Chinedu Offor, also sacked the 27 local government chairmen and their councillors.

The sacked chairmen were directed to hand over to the Directors of Administration immediately. The House also cancelled all appointments made by the former governor into Boards, Agencies and inter-ministerial Departments in the twilight of his administration, saying such appointments were hurriedly done to put landmines on the path of the new administration.

Following a motion by Mike Iheanetu (Aboh Mbaise), the lawmakers asked for a review of all land allocations, land transactions as well as inventory of all government assets, property and determine all governments assets looted and infrastructures vandalised by officials of the former administration.

The House also resolved to suspend the establishment of all tertiary institutions, as well as review all ownership structure and allocation of funds for their construction.

The Speaker urged the governor to adhere to the resolution.

Meanwhile, the council chairmen and councillors stormed the House of Assembly, barricading the entrance to protest purported plans by the lawmakers to terminate their tenure.

The aggrieved chairmen and their supporters arrived at the Assembly complex about 9am, but were denied access to the premises by policemen.

Leader of the Okigwe legislative council Godwin Nwankwo said they got news that the lawmakers wanted to carry out the action at a plenary scheduled for yesterday, so they were there to be part of the plenary to observe the proceedings.

He said: “We heard rumours that the lawmakers want to repudiate the laws they made. They want to approbate and reprobate. They made a law that local governments should serve for three years. We are lawmakers and not law breakers; we were elected same way they were elected. All elections are the same under the constitution. They have no power to dissolve us.”

Offor, who neither confirmed nor denied it, asked how the Chairmen got to know about the intention of the House when they were not spirits. He asked our correspondent to wait for further clarification.

Offor said: “How did they know what we want to do? Are they spirits?”

Asked if the lawmakers have the intention of sacking the chairmen and councillors, Offor said: “Wait until we finish”.

The governor also said  Okorocha did not hand over documents detailing the financial dealings of his administration to him.

He, thereafter, ordered all Permanent Secretaries to submit documents in their care within 24 hours.

Ihedioha gave the order yesterday at the swearing in of Secretary to the State Government, Uche Onyeagocha, and Chief of Staff Chris Okewulonu, at the Government House.

  • Gunmen raid Okorocha’s home

Unknown gunmen, suspected to be hired assassins, Friday night, raided the country home of the immediate past governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, in Ogboko, Ideato South Council Area of Imo State.

The assailants, according to a family source, arrived the governor’s residence at about 2am and over powered the security before gaining entrance into the main building.

According to the source who pleaded anonymity, no valuable was removed but the former governor’s bedroom and other places were thoroughly ransacked, raising suspicion that the invaders may be hired assassins.

Meanwhile, another set of armed men suspected to be government officials, stormed a radio station, the Reach FM, believed to be owned by the governor, and ordered them to pull down the structure housing the station.

According to one of the security men attached to the station, the armed men, who refused to disclose their identity, gave the management three days to pull down the structure or be ejected by force.

This was coming two days after the Akachi tower, one of the monuments built by the former governor, was demolished on the alleged orders of the state government.

However when contacted,  the state Police Public Relations Officer,  Orlando Ikeokwu, a Superintendent of Police,  said he was yet to be officially briefed about the invasion of the governor’s home.

  • Life in the time of fake news

The lifespan of a lie can be quite elastic depending on how intricately it is woven. Some can be buried for years, but in the age of social media it can be brutally short.

That is why I am often confused as to the motivations of purveyors of fake news who know they can be found out in a matter of minutes or hours. While the creators have their dubious agenda, those who spread the lies – especially online – probably do so with some advantage in mind.

Desperate bloggers and website owners who want to attract traffic to their sites would push out the most sensational of stories without subjecting same to the most basic journalistic tests. The more excitable amongst us who get their thrills from spreading the latest tales, are only too glad to share same with the gullible hordes on social media. So what, on the surface, looks like a manifestation of extreme insanity, clearly has method to it.

These days the internet has become a sea of lies: headlines lie, photos and videos tell even bigger lies. The wicked and mischievous can lift a photograph from five years ago and use it to drive a story in a similar context today. The reader would swear he saw the pictures with his own eyes until a rebuttal knocks him back to reality.

Beginning with the election campaign that threw up Donald Trump as US president, fake news has become a multimillion dollar global industry relentlessly deployed for political ends. Nigerians, quick to pick up on global trends no matter how diabolical – have not been slow to jump on the bandwagon.

During the recent general elections it seemed there was a competition by liars to outdo themselves on social media. Perhaps anticipating the impact that the phenomenon could have in determining the outcome of the electoral contest, the then Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, launched a campaign against fake news. It was a non-starter that was quickly brushed aside by malevolent forces who thrive best in polarised environments such as ours.

The inauguration ceremonies at federal and state levels in the last few days provided another fertile ground for fake news merchants to wreak their usual havoc. While the lies exposed the levels of bitterness and hate in our society, it also made for hilarity just imagining what the mischief-makers were trying to achieve. I would touch on a few.

One headline screamed that barely 24 hours after leaving office former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, his wife and brother, were arrested by agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Given his controversial nature, and the alarm he had raised in the preceding weeks that his political foes were out to humiliate him using the anti-graft agency, this supposed news break looked like a swift fulfilment of prophecy.

The report quickly went viral and bloggers lost their heads as they tripped over themselves to see who would be quickest to the draw in the posting the non-news.

For those in the opposition waiting patiently for the All Progressives Congress (APC) government to set on its own, this was titillating stuff. Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, an alumnus of the EFCC’s Abuja detention facilities, was quick to rush out a mocking post welcoming Okorocha to the club. I am sure wherever he was holed up Rochas must have snorted derisively that this was a clear case of ‘Iberiberism.’

Several hours after his enemies had rejoiced at the speed at which retribution had supposedly visited the recently departed governor, the EFCC emerged with a spoilsport press statement denying that it had arrested him and his wife.

Clearly, there must be something about Imo State in this season as another major fake news item – also associated with the indefatigable Okorocha – emerged from there. The great statue builder had planted a giant concrete finger pointing towards the heavens somewhere in the state capital as an enduring democracy dividend for his people.

But lo and behold, the whiff of his cologne had barely evaporated from Government House, when bulldozers ostensibly ordered by the new governor, Emeka Ihedioha, took to demolishing the so-called ‘Akachi’ statue.

It was a surprise ‘move’ to see the new helmsman who comes across as the restrained and understated opposite of his excitable predecessor, bare his fangs so early in the day. The headlines announced that Ihedioha had swung into action by destroying one of the most noticeable of Rochas’ infamous collection of statues.

While Okorocha may have an army of detractors, even they were taken aback that the new governor’s priority would be pulling down his predecessor’s ‘Eighth Wonder.’ A statement by his spokesman many hours later denying he ever ordered the demolition barely spoilt the fun for the fake news brigade. Some only reported he directed a halt in proceedings – leaving out the fact that they ascribed to him an action he never ordered in the first place.

Meanwhile, back in Lagos State – home to a long line of ‘Action Governors’ – the new man Babajide Sanwo-Olu was apparently too slow for the hacks. A few hours after the oath-taking ceremony and with no word on appointments, they decided to make a key one for him. They announced he had appointed the Director-General of his campaign organisation, Tayo Ayinde, as Chief of Staff.

Such an appointment was clearly in the works, but at the time the report appeared it had not been made official. It would be confirmed last Friday. Mortified at the leak, Ayinde issued a statement denying he had been named to the new role.

He signed off with a lecture to the media about always crosschecking their facts – and there’s the rub. These days ‘the media’ is a catch-all phrase for everyone with a Facebook page or Twitter account. Not so. It would not have been lost on him, if he had checked, that not one of the traditional media outlets carried the ‘fake’ report. But this was one unusual case of ‘fake news’ – not being fake. Instead of lambasting those who scooped the news of his appointment, it would have been wiser not to respond and just let official confirmation come.

I would touch on one more report, but at the risk of being accused of spreading fake news would preface it by saying he ‘allegedly’ did so. Up north, it was reported that the one of the first acts of the newly-inaugurated Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, was the acquisition of a brand new wife – reportedly his third.

He has not deigned to respond to the reports so I would assume that is his way of not dignifying the fabricators of an event that never took place with a response. Alternatively, his deafening silence could be confirmation of the nuptials as one of the activities of the inaugural season in the state.

Perhaps, there hasn’t been a confirmation or denial because the governor hasn’t made strategic media aide appointments. Hopefully, a denial is winging its way to the press – however long it takes. So for now I would suggest we file the report of Buni’s ‘new wife’ in the false reports category.

For all their entertainment value, fake news represent a cancer that can tear a volatile multi-religious and multi-ethnic society like ours apart. Such reports can trigger devastating damage that rebuttals that come hours after cannot mend. Even worse, those who act on the strength of the initial account may never get to read the denials.

Aside being a clear and present danger to our collective security, fake news erode trust in an environment where people desperately need to trust one another and those who govern them.

That is why the government – executive branch and legislature – must make the fight against fake news a priority in this new dispensation. The traditional media also has existential reasons to be part of this effort.

As a first step, those who generate fake news and those who gladly spread the poison should be made to pay a steep price. It is the least we can do to stave off tragedies somewhere in the future.

  • Okorocha’s succession plan worked against him -Onuoha

Chief Bonocks Onuoha is the National President of Greater and Better Nigeria Development Initiative (GABNDI). In this interview with Muyiwa Omobulejo, he highlighted some major issues in the political landscape of Nigeria, particularly Imo State. Excerpts

In your opinion, why did the candidate former Governor Rochas Okorocha supported fail in the last election?

It has to do with the candidate. That is the only place I will tell you former Governor Rochas Okorocha got it wrong. By bringing his Son-in-law to succeed him, he got it wrong. No. that was not good enough! I must confess. Imo people felt he didn’t see any other person in the whole of the state except his son-in-law. They believe he wanted to take them for granted and with that he missed it all. That is why they didn’t vote for Uche Nwosu.

But some people are saying he wanted Nwosu to cover some things for him?

Which thing? What atrocity? His government is the only government that brought free education in Imo State. He fed our children in the school. Nobody was killed in his reign in government. No MASSOP/IPOB boy was killed or detained in his tenure. So what atrocities are you talking about?

It is just his succession plan that worked against him. Imo people didn’t welcome that idea at all, and that was how his problem with the people started; had it been that he chose someone else as the governorship candidate and made his Son-in-law the deputy, it would have been okay. Nobody would have blinked an eye. He wouldn’t have fallen apart with the people. Any way; as the case may be, everybody is born to make mistakes because we are not God and when you make mistake, you learn from it.

What about his Certificate of Return as Senator Elect?

I, Chief Onuoha is calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to release the Certificate of Return of Rochas Okorocha because what they claimed that Rochas did, is even minimal compared to what so many of them did and yet their certificates were given to them. They should not persecute him for nothing. They should release his certificate to him immediately.

Do you think there is any reason they want to withhold the Certificate of Return in the first place?

Yes! In 2015, APC was saying that if the Southeast vote for Buhari, the presidency will be zoned to them in 2023. In 2019 they still maintained to give it to the Igbos but some said it is the Yoruba’s turn. Immediately after the election, we started hearing that the Northerners will cling to power till 2031. So this is the way they want to remove Okorocha from the scheme of things. They don’t want him to be positioned at all ahead of 2023. They know that he has the ambition to become the President of Nigeria one day. He was born and brought up in the Northern part of Nigeria. He knows everything about them and if Igbos are to get the presidency in 2023, Okorocha remains the only one that can stand them in 2023. That is why they want to silence his ambition now. The same way they will stop any other person that will be a hindrance to them to govern till 2031.

You claimed Okorocha is the best governor Imo State has been priveledge to have What about former governors of the state?

The former governors, Achinke Udenwa and Ikedi Ohakim’s achievement put together is not worthy of what Rochas Okorocha’s government achieved in one year. I don’t want to start mentioning his achievements one after the other, because if I start mentioning them, this interview will not be over today. But what I want you to do is to just take a look at the picture of the capital (Owerri) nine years ago and then look at the picture of Owerri today. Then you’ll understand what I’m talking about. The beauty of the city today shows clearly that Rochas Okorocha worked every day tirelessly of his eight years tenure in office without resting for one minute so as to achieve what he had achieved in Owerri and beyond. Today, Owerri is a real capital. Owerri is a new heaven, a place of relaxation, a place of emulation. Owerri is now a place you can do any type of legitimate business and you will be happy every day. Owerri is too beautiful. All these and many more are done and achieved by Rochas Okorocha within that short period. We, the Imo people, are supposed to say thank you to someone who have done and achieved this great feat for our state.

  • Imo’s new court complex thrills CJN, judges

If what it takes the judiciary to rise up to the onerous task of dispensing justice and other everyday tasks of this distinguished arm of government is a conducive environment, then the judiciary has been adequately equipped to excel in Imo State.

With an ultramodern court complex furnished with state-of-the-art equipment both in the offices and courtrooms, the business of the judiciary has been given a new lease of life by the outgoing state governor, Rochas Okorocha, who conceived and built the Justice Oputa Court complex in memory of one of Nigeria’s finest jurists, Hon Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.

The edifice built in a sprawling area of Owerri, according to the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mohammed Tanko, represented at the commissioning by Hon Justice Amina Augie, is the best in the country.

Before now the State High Court and other lower courts were housed in a colonial apartment that added to make the business of the judiciary more cumbersome and frustrating.

Speaking during the commissioning handing over of the complex, which was attended by eminent jurists and state Chief Judges, the CJN, charged Judges in the country to write Judgements because of the monetary benefits but for posterity.

Tanko who was represented by a Judge of the Supreme Court, Hon. Justice Amina Augie,  said, “We thank God for the vision given to His Excellency, Governor Rochas Okorocha that came to fruition in the realisation of this wonderful court complex. I doubt if there is any state in this country that has a High Court Complex as magnificent as this one. For this, we thank God for His Excellency, the governor of Imo State, we thank God for the Judges of Imo State and we thank God for the people of Imo State who are going to benefit from this complex after the commissioning.

“The complex is so comfortable that it will enable judges to relax and do their jobs well and give justice without fear, favour or ill will. At the same time, when you walk in and see the name of the complex, Hon. Justice Oputa Complex, he is one of the greatest Jurists this country ever had. Till today, if I am writing any judgement, I still rely on him because he was a great jurist. He was able to capture the law, he was able to explain it and was able to put it into clear words.

“Justice Oputa was an example of what a Judge should be. He never knew that one day a complex like this will be named after him. This is a message to all living judges that we must all have posterity in mind. It tells us that whatever we are writing, we should remember that one day, hundred years’ time one of your grand-children will be reading whatever rubbish you have written or reading something sublime you have written and they will proudly say, my grandfather or mother has done well by the kind of judgement he or she has written.”

He continued that,  “posterity beckons on us not to write bad judgements today because somebody paid us money, tomorrow that person is gone, your reputation down the drain, your children will never want to accept that they were your children. When they are confronted with your name, they will deny it because the association comes with something shameful. Is this what we want as Judges? Or do we want, when long we are gone, our works will teach, motivate and inspire people even those who don’t know the law.”

Earlier in his speech, Governor Rochas Okorocha, stated that he would be remembered for all the works he has done as the governor of the state after he must left as governor, saying, “I stand here today to present to you this wonderful edifice which is tripartite in arrangement. The first building standing by the left is called the Justice Building and the one in the middle is Building of Equity and the last one is Building of Fairness.”

In his words, “when I came in as the governor, I was not lucky like those packaged by the elites of Imo State. I hadn’t any support of the big masquerade politician in the State. I came in as the governor of Imo State through the window of the masses and not through the door of the elites. I didn’t have the co-operation of who is who because I bend protocols for the good of the masses. I have never broken any protocol or law, I only bend it a bit and make sure it doesn’t break, and at the stage of breaking, I strengthen it to the destination I am going to.”

He continued, “One thing you cannot take away from me is that I came here with a passion and vision to make Imo better. But if I have followed your way, this structure standing here wouldn’t have been standing because there were many governors and leaders before me. If I had followed your style and system, the International Cargo airport which is the biggest in this country won’t be standing tall at the airport and so many other projects of note. Only few days ago, we collected the licence of four new Universities, all established in Imo State but yet you don’t understand.

“Today, we have the best police headquarters in Nigeria after the one in Abuja and we have the best prison headquarters in Imo State all built by this government and our Justice Oputa Court Complex stands tall in Nigeria today. Let my work speak for me even after I leave office. This is the only message I have for my political opponents and definitely my work will speak for me.”

The governor said, “By 29th May, I will no longer be governor and never in the history of mankind will I be your governor again. But one thing I am sure is that I have done what I will be remembered for. I have opened up Owerri, I have given Owerri a new life and today our city is functioning, our roads are expanded, real estate is growing in geometrical progression. I have turned land to a capital as wealth set aside for production of further wealth. “Imo people will remember as the person who expanded and developed Imo, Imo people will remember me for the free education.”

The Chief Judge of Imo State, Justice Pascal Nnadi in his speech said, “The event of today, which is the official and ceremonial commissioning of the new Justice Chukwudifu Akunne Oputa High Court Complex marks a major milestone in the annals of the history of the Judiciary of Imo State Nigeria. This edifice and world class Master Architecture was solely conceived, designed and erected by the Rescue Mission Administration of His Excellency, Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha, the governor of Imo State of Nigeria.”

Justice Nnadi added “This is coming at a time when the Judiciary in the State is in dire need of such accommodation and facility for the execution of their legal duties. The Commissioning of this Complex today will go a long way to reduce the threatening suffocating situation of insufficient court facilities which for many gave rise to the uncomfortable situation which we have found ourselves in where Court Judges store one Court Hall”.
