  • Lagos CBT centres ready to conduct UTME – JAMB

The Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) says the 78 accredited Computer Based Test (CBT) centres in Lagos are fully ready to conduct the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) starting from April 11.

Mr. Babatunde Bamisaye, Coordinator JAMB Lagos office, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday.

He spoke on the sideline of the matriculation of newly admitted students at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Yaba, for the 2018/2019 academic session.

According to him, as far as Lagos state is concerned, as at today, we have 78 accredited centres and all of them are fully ready with their personnel on ground.

“The board had visited the centres and certified them technically fit to conduct the examination.

“The Lagos office of the board had also been able to resolve complaints brought before it by intending candidates as the Servicom and Public Relations division of the board was dedicated to treat such cases.

“We have been solving their problems and maybe one or two problems we are unable to solve locally, we refer it online to the head office for necessary attention,” he said.

The coordinator, however, warned candidates not to attempt to bring items such as glasses, scientific wrist watches that were banned by the board to the examination premises, saying that they were unacceptable.

“This is already a law pronounced by the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede and anyone caught with such items will be sanctioned.

“Except for special cases, such as recommended eye glasses proven beyond doubt that would be understandable,” he said.

Bamisoye also advised parents to keep off the examination centres because their coming would add no value to the conduct of the examination, but may rather hinder its success.

“What parents need to do is to get their children prepared, give them transport money and allow them to go and write their examination, after which they return home,” he said.

  • No biometric verification, no UTME, JAMB insists

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) on Monday insisted only candidates verified through biometrics would be allowed to write next month’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed this in Abuja at the meeting of critical stakeholders on strategic planning and preparations for supervision and evaluation of administration of 2019 UTME.

The examination is slated to hold from April 11th – 18th in 708 Computer Based Test centres nationwide.

He said that biometric verification will be the only mode for admittance of candidates into the examination centres.

The registrar explained the board decided to introduce BVN for capturing the biometrics of candidates to counter the increasing threat of identity fraud during its UTME.

Oloyede said candidates whose fingerprints could not be captured during registration from centres across the country were brought to JAMB headquarters and were registered appropriately.

The registrar said such candidates will have to write the UTME examination in his presence in Abuja.

He said:” Any candidate that cannot be verified by BVM must not be allowed to take the examination under any guise. BVM is the only form of attendance register.

“No Biometric Verification, No examination. Discretion is not allowed on this matter.

“All candidates whose fingerprints could not be captured during registration from centres across the country were brought to JAMB HQ and were registered appropriately. JAMB paid for their transportation for the two trips.

“They will come to JAMB HQ in Abuja to also sit for their examination and not any other centre.”

The registrar said the board has introduced new innovations for the successful conduct of the 2019 UTME.

He said: “A separate indicator had also been created for the deaf to differentiate them for special attention at the examination centre. Efforts are on to provide the option of special centres or mainstreaming for the blind.

“We now have live report on centres that registered any candidate, the time the candidate was registered, who registered the candidate, computer system used, the location of registration.

“All these are done through our enhanced monitoring system. I want to warn candidates expected to sit for its examination to ensure their biometrics were taken and verified for the examination.”

About 1,989,181 million candidates registered for the examination.

“All candidates who registered for the 2019 UTME are to ensure that they print their examination notification slips before the day of the examination as no excuses would be entertained.

‘’The public should note that the Board would not reschedule examination for any candidate.”

The board, in the statement, explained the rescheduling of the mock examination to April was due to certain circumstances beyond its control.

It urged candidates who had indicated interest in taking part in the mock examination during registration and have printed their mock examination notification slips not to reprint another one.

“All the details on the slips remain the same except the examination date which is now 1st April, 2019,” the statement said.

The board has also reopened its registration portal to 41,063 candidates who have created their profiles and procured either the UTME or DE ePINS till Friday 15th, March.

The statement added that the portal will be closed by 12midnight of same day.

“Nigerians would recall that the Board had closed the sale of its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Direct Entry application document on Thursday, 21st February, 2019.

‘’At the close of the sale and subsequently close of registration portal, it was discovered that 41,063 candidates created profile and procured either UTME or DE ePINS but were unable to complete their registration formalities after initiating the process.

“In view of this consideration the Board has opened the registration portal effective from Wednesday 13th March, 2019 for all candidates with either UTME or DE ePINS to complete their registration formalities.

“The portal would be closed on Friday, 15th March, 2019 by 12midnight.

“This opportunity is for only candidates who had created profile and procured UTME or DE ePINS before the close of registration portal as the sale of ePINS had since been closed.

“Please endeavor to register before Friday midnight if you are holding any of the ePINS (UTME/DE),” the statement added.

  • JAMB registers 1.8m candidates for 2019 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) says it has registered over 1.8 million candidates for the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The Head, Media and Information of the board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

NAN reports that registration of candidates for the all Computer Based Test (CBT) commenced on Feb. 10 and terminated on Feb. 21.

Benjamin said that the registration was a huge success, adding that there were no hitches at all across the various accredited registration centres nationwide.

“We have concluded the registration and we recorded over 1.8 million candidates for the UTME this year.

“Registration closed on Feb. 21, when we stopped the pin vending for the exercise.

“However, some candidates who had acquired the pin but were unable to register before Feb. 21, due to one reason or the other, were allowed to do so till 12 midnight, Feb. 25.

“The registration finally closed on Feb. 25, he said.

The JAMB spokesman dismissed rumours in some quarters that candidates could start printing their examination notification slip from March 2.

“This is misleading and absolutely not correct.

“Let me sound it clearly that the board has not come up with any date for both the examination and the printing of examination notification slip for candidates.

“The board will announce the date for the 2019 UTME soon.

“As it is now, no date has been fixed yet for both the examination and the printing of examination notification slip.

“The examination slips are usually printed, two weeks to the main examination, but that is only after when the examination date has been fixed.

“There is no way anybody can print examination notification slip when the examination date, itself, has not been fixed.”

He, therefore, urged candidates and other stakeholders to remain calm, reassuring them that the board would make announcement and proper sensitisation about the date for the examination and printing of examination notification slip.

  • JAMB closes sales of UTME registration forms

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) has closed the sale of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) forms.

The board’s Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that the sales of the forms, ended on Thursday.

Benjamin, however said that online registration was still ongoing.

Benjamin said: ” This is because some people earlier bought e-pins for the exams but were unable to register before now, so we are monitoring them online and would avail them the opportunity to register.

” Therefore, we cannot give the exact figure of the registered candidates for now until this is over. ”

He added that the registration would continue until the board decides.

On the issue of rescheduled dates for both the mock and main examinations, Benjamin said that the board was yet to decide on a new date but would give updates as soon as possible.

NAN reports that the board considered rescheduling the initial dates for the examination because of the shift of dates for the general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking also on the suspension of 17 Computer Based Test (CBT) centres across the country, Benjamin assured that the suspension would not, in anyway, affect the process of the examinations as the board had over 700 accredited centres nationwide.

  • Electronic devices remain banned from exam halls, says JAMB

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board yesterday insisted that the use of electronic devices by candidates during the unified tertiary matriculation examinations (UTME) remained prohibited.

The agency said electronic devices like mobile phones, calculators, wristwatches and recorders won’t be allowed into any of its centres by candidates during this year’s examination.

JAMB stated these in its Weekly Bulletin obtained by our reporter in Abuja yesterday.

Some of the banned items include: spy reading glasses, cameras, ear piece, Bluetooth devices, USB, CD, hard disk and other similar storage devices.

Others are: pen/biro, smart lenses, books or any reading/writing material, ink/pen readers, key holders, ATM cards, erasers and smart rings/jewelries.

The statement reads: “To ensure that the board’s examinations meet best global practice, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has prohibited the use of the items during examinations.

“Candidates are hereby advised in their best interest not to bring these items close to the examination venue. Any breach of this directive would bar the candidates from taking the examination.”

JAMB’s spokesperson Dr. Fabian Benjamin said candidates have been complying with the directives since it was introduced by the agency.

Benjamin stated that some candidates, who breached the directive and brought some of the devices to the hall, were caught and handed over to security agencies.

According to him, the essence of the ban is to ensure that JAMB’s examination meets global best practice.

He said: “Candidates have been complying. The board had provided lockers where candidates can lock their personal belongings. However, if you are caught in the hall with any of them, certainly you would be sanctioned.

“Last year, we caught a lady that had a phone in her private part and she was taken to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and she was prosecuted.”

In the same vein, Chairman, Governing Board of JAMB, Dr. Emmanuel Ndukwe, attributed the ban on cyber café from handling its registration on the need to have a seamless, free from all kinds of infractions registration process.

Ndukwe noted that the ban became inevitable following the review of the activities of cybercafé operators.

He explained that registration was a vital component of any successful examination and as such, it should not be marred by extortion, mismatched data and poor technical know-how.

He added that the agency would continue to define the code of operations with a view to enhancing the system for the benefit of all candidates.

The chairman said: “At the UNILAG stakeholders’ meeting held on 21st December, 2018, it was agreed that the ban on cybercafés’ and all other places that are not CBT centres should be sustained to avoid discrepancies in candidates’ data and prevent sundry fraudulent acts.

“Any centre we find not complying with our ethics of registration will be sanctioned and we believe this is the way to go in ensuring that the right things are done.

“All requirements had been defined and agreed upon by the board and centres owners. The cost of the e-pins has been slashed by the Federal Government and nobody should be allowed to do otherwise.”

He stated that JAMB has not foreclose the possibility of cybercafés participating in the registration exercise, insisting that they must meet certain standards before they can be allowed to operate.

“Once it meets the board’s expectations, a cybercafé could be upgraded to a CBT centre,” he said.
