  • JAMB chairman: UTME deadline may not be extended

Chairman of Governing Board, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ), Dr Emmanuel Ndukwe, has said he does not foresee an extension of the registration for the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) beyond February 21 deadline.

Speaking while monitoring the ongoing registration of candidates in some Computer Based Test (CBT) Centres in Lagos on Friday, which he described as seamless, Ndukwe urged candidates planning to take the 2019 UTME to do so now while there is no pressure at the Centres.

” I don’t foresee an extension. We have to stick to the date we have given to the public. If we start now thinking about extension, it doesn’t portray our seriousness. Some of the places we visited had many systems but few candidates. Let the candidates out there be mindful of the examination dates. I don’t foresee any extension of dates,” he said.

Ndukwe expressed satisfaction with what he saw at the Ha-Shem Academy centre, Iwaya, FCE Technical Akoka centre, and the Electronic Test Centre (ETC), Anthony, where he interacted with the centre managers and candidates.

“It is seamless and we are happy. What I have seen today has confirmed that Prof Oloyede and his technical team were very right to ban cyber cafes. I have interacted with the candidates; they are all happy and satisfied. I must express the satisfaction of the board. How it was last year is not how it is this year and will be better next year,” he said.

In all the centres, none was found charging more than the official fee of the examination, N3,500 in addition to N500 for the literature text, Sweet Sixteen, to be used for the examination, and N700 charged by the CBT Centres for registration.

Ndukwe said any centre involved in sharp practices would be sanctioned.

He said JAMB was right to have banned Cyber cafes because of the irregularities they engaged in.

“We found out that most of the fraudulent things that happened took place in cyber cafes and that was why we banned Cyber cafes. Right now, any centre that we find that is not complying would be sanctioned. When you sanction one or two centres, others would sit up. So far we have not heard any complaints emanating from the previous practices associated with cafes, especially overcharging candidates. We are very strict about it.

  • UNIBEN begs JAMB to lift ban on CBT centre

    •’Suspension stands’

Management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has appealed to the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to lift the ban on the use of its ICT Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration.

The school denied allegations it charged above N700 for registration.

A statement by the university’s spokesman, Mr. Michael Osasuyi, said the suspension for the alleged breach of the code governing the 2019 JAMB registration was done hastily and without proper investigation.

Osasuyi explained that JAMB was solely in charge of vending pins while the university charged the approved N700 as cost of registration.

He said the suspension would deny the institution access code to clear its backlog of over 300 candidates.

Osasuyi appealed to JAMB to restore access to the university’s portal to enable candidates process their registration, and hailed JAMB for measures to check extortion during registration.

He said: “Since we are not vending pins, JAMB has the authority over pin vending and can track the source of each pin they dispensed. It is not proper for JAMB to withdraw our access without proper investigation.

“For clarification, University of Benin is not vending JAMB PINs. We only attend to candidates with pins and they pay N700.

“We have partnered JAMB over the years without blemish. This accusation is a serious embarrassment to the university. We look forward to your release of our access code so we can clear our backlog of over 300 candidates.”

But JAMB has rejected appeals that the suspension be lifted.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB refuted claims by the university that the suspension was done hastily.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been drawn to a statement by the University of Benin, on the suspension of the university’s CBT centre on the breach of the code governing the 2019 UTME registration.

“The board appreciates the University for commending JAMB for putting up measures to check extortion of candidates. However, the Board refutes the comment that the matter was concluded hastily and without proper investigation.

“The Registrar of the Board, being a former Vice Chancellor, was shocked and more disturbed with evidences of the extortion of candidates by the University CBT centre. The Board therefore asks the university to investigate the matter and identify bad eggs in the development.

“An apology shall be required not only to the Board, but also to the country if after the denial, evidence is adduced to prove the infraction committed on the ground of a highly respected institution as University of Benin.”

  • JAMB suspends UNIBEN CBT centre, eight others

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has suspended the University of Benin ICT Computer Based Test (CBT) centre and eight others from partaking in this year’s unified tertiary matriculation examination registration.

The board stated that the centres were suspended for breaching the code governing the 2019 registration exercise.

JAMB stated these in its weekly news bulletin obtained by The Nation yesterday in Abuja.

Its spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, also said the board was monitoring the activities of 10 more centres in Lagos and Plateau states, noting that appropriate action would be taken against them once investigation is concluded.

The suspended centres include: Mardakem Company Ltd., Methodist Boys High School, College Road, beside Maritime Academy, Oron, Akwa-Ibom State; Bintels Global Services Ltd (Centre for Computer Education), Fr. Joseph Memorial High Sch. Aguleri, Anambra State; Noble & Shuaib ICT Ltd, Girls Secondary School, Alor, Anambra State; and Global ICT Connect Ltd, Km 5, Gboko Rd, Opp College of Health Sciences, Benue State University, Makurdi.

Technical College, Idepe, Okitipupa, Ondo State; Divine Success All CBT Centre, Km1, Along Iseyin-Ibadan Express Way Iseyin, Oyo State; and Riyom ICT Centre, former Riyom Local Govt Secretariat, Riyom, Plateau State.

According to him, the board, during a meeting with CBT operators in Lagos, had spelt out the cost for each service for the UTME, from the cost of obtaining the e-pins as reduced by the Federal Government to the cost of the reading texts and charges for registering candidates.

He explained that before beginning the 2019 UTME and Direct Entry (DE) registration, the guidelines on the exercise was deliberated and laid out for all CBT operators to adhere to strictly.

“Unfortunately, findings from the board’s monitoring exercise revealed that some centres were charging higher than the stipulated figure directed by the Federal Government and equally agreed on at the Lagos meeting for other charges.

“The board finds this very disappointing and has therefore suspended such centres caught in this unholy act from the 2019 exercise.”

He explained that before commencing the 2019 UTME and Direct Entry (DE) registration, the guidelines on the exercise was deliberated and laid out for all CBT operators to adhere to strictly.

The JAMB spokesperson said: “Earlier, the Board reiterated the directive of the Federal Government for the 2019 e-pins to be sold at N3, 500 excluding the cost of the reading text, to ensure absolute compliance. The meeting had also resolved that the cost of registration should not exceed N700.

“Candidates were also to be guided properly on the processes, if for any reasons such assistance is required, without collecting any dime from them.
Unfortunately, findings from the Board’s monitoring exercise revealed that some centres were charging higher than the stipulated figure directed by the Federal Government and equally agreed on at the Lagos meeting for other charges.

“The Board finds this very disappointing and has therefore suspended such centres caught in this unholy act from the 2019 exercise.

“The Board is monitoring closely and about 10 centres are under investigation in Lagos and Plateau. Management would meet on Monday 28th January 2019 to take appropriate action on these centres.

“The Board will continue to monitor the on-going exercise, to ensure that Nigerians are not misled by unpatriotic operators. JAMB monitoring teams are spread all over the nation and whoever is caught, would be punished in accordance with the precedence being laid now.

“All centre operators and selling outlets are advised to adhere to the Federal Government’s price of e-pins, cost of registration and not to sell any of the documents meant to be issued to candidates free.

“As a regulator, the Board would continue to protect the candidates to ensure that they are not misled, cheated or frustrated in their quest to acquire tertiary education.

  • JAMB registers over 300,000 candidates in one week

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) says it has registered over 300,000 candidates for its 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in one week.

The Board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos.

Benjamin said that this was coming a week after the commencement of the registration exercise.

The board commenced registration of candidates for 2019 all Computer Based Test (CBT) on Jan.10 and it would close on Feb. 21.

According to him, the registration so far has been seamless, and the board is happy with the development.

“We are happy with the way the process is going; we hope it will continue this way.

“So far, we have registered over 300,000 candidates as at Thursday.

“We are happy there have not been issues because so far, there is just a tiny gap between the number of candidates that have acquired the e-pin and that of those that have registered,” he said.

Meanwhile, JAMB had insisted that all candidates with issues of biometrics must go over to Abuja for it to be rectified.

“I want to reiterate the fact that only the Registrar of the board has the sole right to attend to such issues.

“Any candidate who may have issues with the capturing of his or her fingerprints at their respective points of registration will need to come down to our office in Abuja.

“This will require the Chief Executive to do it himself for the purpose of security,” Benjamin said.

This, however, was contrary to calls by some stakeholders urging the board to set up special centres in every state of the country to tackle issues.

The National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) had argued that asking candidates with biometric issues to travel all the way to Abuja to get such issues sorted out was too demanding, citing dangers of transportation, fares, among others.

Chief Adeolu Ogunbanjo, the second Deputy National President of the Association, said that most parents were barely struggling to get money to get their children and wards registered.

Ogunbanjo said that for those with such biometric issues, travelling to Abuja was an additional burden.

  • JAMB warns against two candidates sharing phone number

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Friday warned prospective candidates to adhere strictly to the registration procedure for the 2019 UTME to avoid creating issues for themselves.

The Board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.

NAN reports that registration of candidates for the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) started nationwide on Thursday in more than 700 accredited Computer Based Test (CBT) centres.

According to Benjamin, all candidates desirous of registering for the examination, therefore, must ensure that he or she starts off by sending their full names, (surname first) to the code provided by the board.

In doing this, candidates must ensure that no other person had used that telephone number for that purpose.

“No two persons must use a single GSM number in commencing the registration process as it will not be acceptable.

“The way it is configured is one individual to one telephone number that will remain exclusive to that single individual for the purpose of the entire examination process.

“Not even siblings are allowed to share a particular telephone number for this purpose.

“For instance, if candidate A used a telephone number to send his name to the code in the past, candidate B, who is a sibling to A cannot use that number for that purpose again.

“But candidate A, who probably might not have been able to pass the examination, can still use that particular line again to send his name to that code whenever the need arises,’’ he explained.

In the case of a missing telephone line, Benjamin suggested that it would be safe to get a fresh telephone number for the purpose and not a ‘welcome back’ to send to the code for the candidate’s profile number.

“No two persons can share a telephone number for the purpose of confidentiality.

“As a rule, it has always been one person to a telephone number to get a profile number that will enable candidates do the proper registration and capturing,’’ he said.

  • 2019 UTME: Cyber cafés deserted as JAMB begins registration

Applicants of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have deserted Cyber cafés in Bwari, Abuja, as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) yesterday commenced the 2019/20 registration.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that JAMB commenced the online registration in its Computer Based Test (CBT) centres across the country.

The Board’s Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said that he would stop the use of cyber cafés for registration of candidates, to stop extortion of candidates by the outlets.

Oloyede said the stoppage of these commercial vendors would also put an end to the mix-up of candidates’ data by the vendors.

NAN checks at some of the major cafes in town, as well as the JAMB’s CBT centre in Kogo, showed that while the cafés were abandoned, the CBT centre was making brisk business, as applicants struggled to maintain a queue.

One of the cafe operators, Mathias Ugo, said all they were left to do for the applicants was to create e-mail address for those who had none, for a negotiable price of N200.

“They would first of all need to create an e-mail address, of which some are not usually aware until they get here; so, some of us are just hanging around to assist them to facilitate the process.

“We also help those who have not uploaded their results on the JAMB website to do so, at the same price.

“I must say, cutting us out from the exercise will affect business greatly, especially for some of us who run cafés close to the CBT centre because, before now, applicants run to us when the hassles to get into the centre get tougher.

“We profited from the exercise and so did desperate applicants; now, they are left with no other alternative,” he said.

An applicant, Jumoke Laolu, who was among the first group of applicants to be admitted into the centre for the exercise, described the process as hard, but organised.

The applicants were to pay N3,500 as cost of registration pin, N500 for Compulsory Reading Text and N700 for service charge, totalling N4, 700, as against the N6, 200 charged the previous year.

The sale of forms will last for six weeks and the 2019 UTME is scheduled to commence on March 16.
