    • Senator proposes N100,000 monthly food voucher for the poor

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, Jimoh Ibrahim, yesterday accused rich people in Nigeria of not paying adequate taxes to government.

Ibrahim, who represents Ondo South, said this while contributing to a debate on the 2025-2027 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF/FSP) during plenary.

He noted that despite generating employment, such people need to pay taxes on their luxurious assets.

Addressing reporters after plenary, Ibrahim said: “They (the rich) need to pay more. It is comfortable for them to pay. I know they say they generate employment, but they need to pay more on their luxury assets.

“This is the area we should develop. I am looking at laws that will actually police transactional cost.

“Government provides incentives for your business. What we are looking at is profit from your investment. The gross domestic product (GDP) to tax ratio is 18 per cent; about 72 per cent is left out of the tax net. We should be worried that 72 per cent (of taxable citizens) are not in the tax net.

“I am not saying we should go and tax the poor population, but the rich needs to do more in these difficult times.”

Ibrahim suggested that the Federal and state governments distribute food vouchers of N100,000.00 each to 30 million poor Nigerians monthly.

The Ondo South senator said this would cushion the effect of high cost of goods and services and associated hardship in the country.

He said noted that the implementation of his suggestion would reduce pressure on the naira since the vouchers are mere paper.

Language of war in peacetime is mutiny, says Jimoh Ibrahim

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim has urged former President Olusegun Obasanjo to desist from making inflammatory statements while commenting on the state of the nation.

He advised the former leader to be mindful of his language, saying that employing a language of war in peacetime is tantamount to mutiny.

Ibrahim, who represents Ondo South District in the Senate, reacted to the ex – President’s address at a symposium organised by the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University, Connecticut, United States, where he described Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu as a failing state.

Taking exception to the outburst, he said the country is functioning effectively under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.

Ibrahim, who spoke on a television programme, said contrary to Obasanjo’s claims, Nigeria is not a failed state.

Obasanjo had in his keynote address also urged Nigerians to prioritise the appointment of new, credible leadership for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at all levels to ensure electoral integrity.

The former President who spoke on the theme “Leadership Failure and State Capture in Nigeria,” described what was happening in the country at the moment as “state capture”.

Ibrahim, who disagreed with Obasanjo, said, “I have a lot of respect for former President Olusegun Obasanjo, but the language of the war on peacetime is a disaster. Everybody knows that developing countries are failed states. How do you define developing countries in international relations? Failed states.

“Is Obasanjo interested more than my interest? I employed over 4,000 Nigerians. Baba himself knows that if Nigeria at this time is a failed state, then what do we talk about Ghana?

He added: “Nigeria is working under this government. Three things are very important if you are dealing with international politics, authority and influence. I have been in the IMF now for over nine years; the IMF is going to like Tinubu for some of the reforms that he is pioneering. You think America will easily say, ‘Yes, good boy, I clap for you because you are removing subsidy’?”

“That you are running an economic policy that is completely not dependent on these countries. It has not been dictated by America and China. So, Tinubu’s administration knows from the beginning what problems they are going to give by trying to be independent.”

Ibrahim maintained Nigeria is not a failed state, urging the former President to desist from using a war language during peacetime.

He stressed: “So, I disagree with former President Obasanjo that Nigeria is a failed state. I disagree with Obasanjo for using war language in peacetime; we don’t need this kind of bullet statement from an elder statesman and government.

“Obasanjo should keep quiet. If he wants to say anything, he should look at the assessment of the government in its totality. Why is Obasanjo not talking about Boko Haram? Why is Obasanjo not talking about security? Why is Obasanjo not telling us that the security situation in the country has improved under Tinubu? Is the dollar-to-naira ratio now the yardstick to measure government performance?

“So, to me, when you use the language of war in peacetime, you are doing a disservice to the nation.”

A member of the Executive Council of the African Parliamentary Union (APU) and Chairman of the 10th Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Worldwide, Jimoh Ibrahim, has advised the union to make a law for one African visa for the development of the continent.

The lawmaker noted that the converging complexities of colonial masters’ influence have made it difficult for many African countries to think out of the box.

“It is a sad situation that some African countries with nothing are introducing strict conditions for visas at the point of entry, even for members of the African Union,” he said.

Ibrahim, who spoke in N’Djamena, the Republic of Chad, said such attitude promoted hunger and insecurity.

“One Africa visa is an incredible rebranding for the continent. It could be a single or multiple entries for two or ten years, depending on the situation,” he said.

The Ondo South senator said there is also the need for the continent to tackle the challenges of food insecurity and hunger to avoid social crises that might spark a third World War.

“Unlike COVID-19, which we could not see coming, a potential description of social order and governance — food insecurity and hunger — are here, and doing nothing is not an option. Act fast now before it is too late,” Ibrahim warned.
