    Jumia wins award, supports Nigerian fashion

    The ‘E-commerce Website of the Year’ award went to Jumia at the Beacon of ICT awards organised by Nigeria Communications Week media. Jumia took home the award for the biggest and best e-commerce website in Nigeria. The online shopping mall won the award based on its efforts in helping to grow the e-commerce market in Nigeria since its launch. The firm beat other online platforms like Konga and OLX to clinch the award. The award was presented to the trio of Co-CEO Jumia Nigeria, Nicola Martin; Head of Marketing Jumia Nigeria, Jonathan Doerr; and Public Relations Manager, Olamide Amosu.

    “We are excited that our efforts are continuing to pay off with the acceptance of our brand and retail e-commerce in Nigeria. The only way to stay number one is by satisfying customers and expanding our reach. We would like to thank all our customers and all those who believe in us. Hopefully next year we will take home this same award and more,” Mr. Martin said.

    Speaking on the award, Mr. Chike Onwuegbuchi, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Nigeria Communications Week newspaper, said “the online retailer has endeared itself to Nigerian’s, hence it has become a household name.” He noted that Jumia maintained a leading position during the keenly contested voting period. He praised the ingenuity of the online retailer, especially in the promotion of e-commerce and e-payment in the country, while recruiting many young Nigerians to drive the site.

    Perhaps, in appreciation of the award, Jumia has decided to promote Nigerian fashion by partnering African Fashion Week to announce the best emerging Nigerian designer. With over 20,000 fashion items in its store, the online retailer recently expanded its reach, promoting more Nigerian fashion.

    Jumia, according to its owners, is said to be the one-stop-shop for fashion in Nigeria, which gives as much visibility as possible to Nigerian designers to showcase their products online and reach their target audience all over the country and beyond. With this latest partnership with African Fashion Week, Jumia Nigeria allows both parties to engage more fashion followers across the continent and discover new talents in the industry.

    Prior to the launch in Nigeria, African Fashion Week has already planned successful events in the UK and other European countries. This year’s edition is powered by Jumia Nigeria and will be hosting some of the upcoming fashion designers in the country and they will be showcasing their collections. Some of the designers are House of Marie, Jedidah, Long Feet Boutique and many more.

    These designers are empowered by Jumia with the opening of a proudly Nigerian store called ‘By-Naija’. Co-CEO Jumia Nigeria, Jeremy Doutte stated, “We are always proud to promote Nigerian Fashion, and following the success of our ‘By-Naija’ online store, we are looking forward to encouraging more creativity in Nigeria with the upcoming African Fashion Week partnership in Nigeria’

    The designers were hosted to a one-day workshop where Jumia educating them on entrepreneurship and how to reach their target audience with online retailers as a sales/marketing option for their brand.

    In her words, founder of African Fashion Week Nigeria,  Ronke Ademiluyi said,  ‘We are really excited to have Jumia as a sponsor/partner of AFWN, and we believe that it is the perfect platform that will act as a retail network and distribution channel for our designers, a platform that will assist in making designers labels readily available to consumers.

    Ticket sales for the upcoming African Fashion Week Nigeria will be available on Jumia.com.ng with delivery options all over Nigeria. Fashion fans can also win free tickets to the fashion week by participating in the conversation on Jumia’s facebook and twitter during the period before the event. To round up the Fashion Week, Jumia will be announcing the next biggest fashion brands to emerge out of Nigeria.

    An online shopping store, Jumia, has revealed plans to empower more women to achieve their life and career goals.

    The company’s Head of Human Resource and Finance Monica Rucki, who spoke on the occasion of the year’s International Women’s Day, said: “I am keen to emphasise that in the past few years, women have achieved a lot with innovation and knowledge which should be celebrated.’

    “In Nigeria, we have seen women rise to positions men previously occupied and it is safe to say that women can do as much if given the opportunity.”

    The Firm’s offline manger Afam Ayinka added: “This week, the firm will be putting its women first with daily spotlight on Jumia’s making a change with their different roles.”

    This International Women’s Day even with the theme: ‘Equality for women is progress for all,” was celebrated last weekend.

    Jumia Nigeria is to employ more independent sales consultant.

    The platform promotes entrepreneurship with a new money making programme for everyone, with an opportunity to become part of Jumia.

    Nigeria’s biggest online retailer has expanded its reach, connecting entrepreneurs, students, workers and others with the new sales programme, ‘Independent sales consultant’

    The scheme is an avenue for people to make more money for themselves, by being entrepreneurs through Jumia. It is an open ground for everyone who wants to earn extra money on the side, network with people and enter the world of online retail at little or no cost to them.

    The opportunity offers attractive commissions for top salesmen without committing to full employment with Jumia. Hours are flexible; only required for regular training.

    In three steps, one can become a consultant. First, register, create a team(Network of people selling) and start selling Jumia products and make money.

  • JUMIA wins best Online retail brand

    Jumia an online outfit, received another big award as the best Online Retail Brand of the year from the Brand Journalist Association of Nigeria.  At the same time, announced its new CEOs; Nicolas Martin and Jérémy Doutté.  They will replace former Managing Directors, Tunde Kehinde and Raphael Afaedor, who decided to leave JUMIA Nigeria to start their own businesses.

    Jeremy Hodara, Co-CEO of Africa Internet Holding (AIH) – JUMIA’s holding company said: “We are glad our hard work and growth over the years has paid off following our World Retail award as Best New Retail and now we are also recognised locally by the Brands Journalist Association of Nigeria. We only launched Jumia in Nigeria one and a half years ago and we are eager to share our success story.”

    Chairman of the BJAN, Goddy Ofose said “he has seen Jumia’s growth and how it has managed to keep a good perceived brand that customers, both offline and online, can identify with. Even though Jumia still has a long way to go, this is just the beginning to building the brand we want in Nigeria.

    Raphael Afaedor and Tunde Kehinde were also a part of the Co-Founders team, which set up JUMIA together with the AIH in 2012. Last year, JUMIA was the first African company to win a World Retail Award as “The Best New Retail Launch of the Year”. Further to this, MTN and Millicom announced its investments into AIH.

  • JUMIA begins online Christmas store

    Nigeria’s number one shopping destination, has begun the countdown to Christmas by launching Nigerian’s biggest online store.

    Under the slogan ‘All You want for Christmas’ Jumia is providing customers an opportunity to shop stylish products for the whole family – including fashion, gadgets, electronics, beauty and others.

    In a statement made available to the Nation, Jumia explained that a special section is dedicated to all the kids’ favorites at the best prices during this festive season.

    Speaking further  in the statement, Tunde Kehinde, Co-founder Jumia Nigeria said; “This is our second Christmas as a business and this time we have made it even bigger. We are offering customers everything with the best prices giving everyone the Perfect Christmas. Also Jumia is creating more avenues for people to shop online with our Mobile App which recently won the Nigerian RIMA for the best product of the Year.”

    He said that in the Spirit of Christmas, the store will also have an array of Christmas ornament like lightings, Christmas trees and tree decorations – from a simple round ball to highly artistic designs.

     

  • JUMIA wins Best Retail Launch of the Year

    Jumia has received the most important retail award at the World Retail Congress in Paris. TONIA ‘DIYAN reports.

    JUMIA.com has won ‘The Best Retail Launch of the Year’ at the World Retail Congress in Paris. By this fact, JUMIA is the first African company to have won the most important retail award worldwide. They did this ahead of all other offline, online and developed market retailers of the world, other nominees in this category were Hedonism Wines, Presso, Quem disse, Berenice, t.riciclo and Zalora.  The event was ran by the publishing company EMAP and discussed issues affecting the international retail industry; covering core retail in all segments issues as well as social, economic, political and ethical concern. Previous winners include top brands such as ASOS, Migros, NikeTown, Woolworths or Zappos.com. JUMIA offers their products online, via a mobile app or on cash delivery spots – leapfrogging traditional retail in Africa.

    “We are delighted with the wide international reach of this year’s winners and that for the first time, we are presenting an award to an African retailer,” said Ian McGarrigle, chairman of the World Retail Congress. The World Retail Congress’s jury also said JUMIA has set the highest benchmark when it comes to retailing in Africa. “Their Excellency in online marketing, IT and operations are key drivers for JUMIA’s sharp growth rates and the company’s rising brand awareness throughout the whole of Africa.”

    In one year the number one online store in Nigeria Jumia become the fourth most visited website and has achieved a record breaking milestone on social media in also one year with over 500,000 friends on Face book.

    The largest Nigerian online company investment has moved to a warehouse in Ogba, Lagos which will house 500 employees and create the largest ecommerce campus in West Africa.

    The online store also started a Corporate Social Responsibility Campaign “delivering smiles” to support education, economic empowerment, and affordable healthcare programs in Nigeria

    June last year, the store kicked off with the largest ecommerce website in the country. Twelve months later, it has served over half a million customers – changing the way people shop in Nigeria.

    Recently, it secured with its affiliated companies a further $35million in funding from MILLICOM. This funding comes in addition to recent investments from J.P. Morgan and Summit Partners. The funding, which represents the largest investment in a Nigerian e-commerce startup, allows Jumia to continue its rapid growth and serve even more customers across Nigeria.

    According to Co-founder Raphael Afaedor: “In the beginning we were three employees dreaming of being the largest ecommerce retailer in Nigeria. Now, we have more than five hundred employees and offer Nigerian youth a unique opportunity to work in a fast-paced, world class start up. We focus every day on delivering a fantastic shopping experience for our customers, through the widest range of products in Nigeria and fast, secure and stress-free delivery. Our new warehouse allows us to even grow further.”

    The anniversary will be celebrated with a first anniversary e-commerce conference, various fashion events, special discounts, new partnerships, new changes to its website and the education campaign “delivering smiles”.

    In June, the store promises to give one book to a child for buying books from them. They will visit schools with the ‘1 Child 1 Book’ foundation and give out books to less privileged pupils.

    The store is planning to team up with ACE Africa Charity to sell its ACE wrist bands with all returns going to the charity.This will be promoted to their half a million social media followers.

    The store has also entered into partnership with Mastercard to use MasterCard’s Internet Gateway Service to make credit card payments safer and easier. They have also announced further exclusive partnerships with Dell, Intel and Nokia, among others offering special prices and exclusive products.
