Kalu, Ohakim meet to enhance Southeast’s fortune

Former Abia and Imo Governors Dr. Orji Kalu and Chief Ikedi Ohakim have begun moves to mobilise the Igbo to enhance Southeast’s fortune in the Nigerian project.

The ex-governors met behind closed doors yesterday to appraise the interest of Igboland in the national polity.

The meeting, held in Lagos, was attended by prominent people from the Southeast.

In a communiqué made available to reporters and signed by Kalu and Ohakim, they urged stakeholders in the Southeast to imbibe the spirit of forgiveness to move the zone forward.

The duo said the bitterness among Southeast’s leaders was the cause of the region’s setback.

They said: “Today marks a beginning in Igbo land. Today’s meeting is a demonstration to the world that forgiveness is the key to progress. Our differences have been resolved in the interest of our people.”

The politicians noted that the zone needed to support the President Goodluck Jonathan administration to ensure the completion of the new Niger Bridge, the implementation of the gas master plan, the completion of the railway, among others.

The meeting condemned politicians’ disrespect for the Southeast traditional institution, saying they remained fathers to all.

The former governors said it was regrettable that the Southeast produced the highest number of graduates, but the youths are unemployed. They urged government to support the entrepreneurship spirit of Igbo youths by creating an enabling environment and empowerment schemes.

The top politicians enjoined Nigerians to remain steadfast and prayerful to overcome insecurity.

Kalu: Govt should consider negotiation with Boko Haram

A former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu has advised the Federal Government to consider  a “formal or informal” negotiation with the Boko Haram sect or their agents in exchange for the release of the  abducted Chibok schoolgirls.

Kalu said the option of  “formal or informal negotiation” with the sect was imperative because of the safety and security of the abducted girls.

The former governor said this was more important than any other consideration for the future leaders of Nigeria.

He said government could send agents to negotiate with Boko Haram leaders or their agents without getting involved.

Addressing reporters yesterday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, on arrival from London, Kalu said other countries, including the United States, have adopted the negotiation option during insurgency in Afghanistan and other countries.

He said: “Well, the Federal Government should negotiate with Boko Haram, either formally or informally, because the lives of those girls are greater than any other consideration. They are the leaders of tomorrow.

“We cannot allow those girls to be suffering in the hands of those people. The government can negotiate formally or informally. It can send agents to negotiate on its behalf without getting involved. The U.S does this in Afghanistan and other places. It can negotiate formally or informally.”

Kalu noted that rather than apportion blames, politicians and other Nigerians should collaborate to end insecurity in the land.

He said if the blame game continues, the indivisibility and unity of Nigeria would be threatened, such that the country may be heading for disintegration.

Kalu said the challenge of insecurity and the tussle for power may bring to pass, assertions by an American diplomat that Nigeria may break up in 2015.

He said: “You see, this issue is not about the President. If we don’t take time and work together as Nigerians, Jonathan might be the last Nigerian President. Jonathan might be the Mikhail  Gorbachev of Nigeria.

“That is the truth. So, we had better wake up.

“The political class, the business class, the military and civilians must now stand up to work for our internal security. Internal security is more important than anything we have done. I believe that once we are able to come together, Nigeria will be alright.

“As of now, the country is in pains; the country is in problems, and some people are taking it very lightly.

“We are suffering from the pains of our people. We are suffering from the pains of the Nigerian system. This is not about which part of the country you come from; it is about Nigeria. Nigerians should take what is happening seriously.

“I am surprised that the political class and the private sector are still joking with this matter. This is a serious matter. Anybody’s child can be kidnapped; whether it is in Chibok or any other  place. Nigerians should take this matter seriously.

“Can you imagine how many Nigerians have been killed; how many of us who have been wounded? I want our people to be wise…”

Adenuga, Kalu hail Awujale at 80

Globacom Chairman Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr. and former Abia State Governor Dr. Orji Kalu have felicitated with the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, on his 80th birthday.

In a congratulatory letter to the monarch, Adenuga described him as “a living legend, whose acts, thoughts and aspirations have continued to lift Ijebuland and its people”.

He said: “In the 54 years of Alayeluwa’s reign, Ijebuland has transmuted into international reckoning due to Oba Adetona’s untiring efforts to develop our land. It is on record that the monarch leveraged on his personal contacts and those of his subjects to reposition Ijebuland and its people, who are considered as legendary masters in leadership, commerce and industry.

“Oba Adetona is the quintessential Ijebu who has defined the never-say-die entrepreneurial spirit unique to the race. As a nationalist and detribalised patriot, he has built bridges of friendship across various ethnic divides. It is remarkable that Alayeluwa has re-invented the Ojude Oba Festival into a global event enthusiastically supported by devotees of all religions, thus promoting religious harmony.”

Adenuga saluted the monarch’s love for education, “typified by his enrolment at the National Open University in his quest to make history as the oldest monarch to bag a degree in law”.

He wished Oba Adetona sterling health and prosperity.

Kalu, in his goodwill message, described the Awujale as a rare monarch, who has remained steadfast in fighting for the progress of Ijebuland.

He said: “Your Majesty, I join millions of your well wishers in celebrating your 80th birthday. Your reign has witnessed peace and intimidating development in Ijebuland. It is my prayer that God Almighty will continue to give you wisdom in running the affairs of Ijebu Kingdom.”

Kalu urged Ijebu sons and daughters to continue to support the monarch with prayers and wished Oba Adetona good health and many more years.

  • Kalu: governor has performed

    Kalu: governor has performed

Former Abia State Governor Orji Uzo Kalu has scored Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi high in performance.

He expressed optimism that Fayemi would be re-elected on June 21.

Speaking with reporters after visiting Fayemi at the Government House in Ado-Ekiti, Kalu said: “I am sure the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would battle Fayemi in the election, but I am convinced he will win.”

Praising Fayemi’s “exemplary performance”, he urged the people to re-elect him.

Kalu, who is on a tour of the country to preach national unity, said Fayemi has provided good roads, quality education and access to quality health care, among others, for the people.

He said he was impressed by the diligence and commitment with which Fayemi executed projects across the state, adding that he got reports from the people that the governor was “performing well”.

Kalu said: “Ekiti people should rally round the governor. According to what the people said, the governor has done well. He has put in the mechanism and software for the job. Everything will not come in one day. You will start from somewhere and operate it. He is giving them access to good roads, education and health care. I have been going round the Southwest and I am impressed by what is on ground.”

He urged parties to shun violence and play politics with decency and honour.

On national unity, Kalu said all hands must be on deck to ensure the country’s survival.

He advocated a two-party system for the country, saying it would strengthen democracy.

Fayemi hailed Orji for the “patriotic step” he took towards sustaining Nigeria’s unity, adding: “This transcends political and religious affiliations.”

He said Kalu’s gesture would help Nigerian leaders see beyond the present challenges and hope for a better future.

The governor said he would never engage in the politics of bitterness.

He said even though people often take sides during elections, his administration would “never mix politics and governance”, adding: “My mission is to banish poverty from the state.”

  • Kalu: Nigeria yet to get true leaders

Kalu: Nigeria yet to get true leaders

Former Abia State Governor Dr. Orji Uzo Kalu said yesterday that Nigeria is yet to identify altruistic leaders, who are not driven by opportunism.

He decried the over-representation of men in their 80s at the National Conference, who are trying to determine a future suitable for the millennial generation, who have been shut out of the conference.

Kalu said there would not be credible leadership until old people withdrew and allowed the younger generation to take over.

The ex-Abia governor, delivering a lecture in Ibadan, Oyo State on the centennial celebration titled: “Nigeria: A nation in quest of Credible leadership”, noted that the country needs leaders, who can make a difference and improve people’s standard of living through poverty reduction.

He said: “The essence of credible leadership is to ensure a better and secure life, a peaceful environment and a prosperous future for the citizenry. We need a credible leadership that will foster the country’s unity. Such leadership will connect the people with the resources and harness our potential, while ensuring the betterment of the society.

“The present leaders seem to be failing the nation and the people are becoming doubtful if we have leaders. To worsen the matter, first generation leaders are mostly the ones still calling the shots.”

According to Kalu, identifying a credible leader is a precondition for credible leadership.

The publisher of The Sun, who described the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo as a credible leader, who impacted on his people in a manner no other leader had done, wondered if the country could ever have a leader like Awolowo.

“The late sage remains a symbol of credible leadership not just in the Southwest, but also in the country. He is a reference point. His efforts led to massive education of the people in the Southwest. This is the hallmark of leadership,” he said.

The former Abia governor, who noted that the opposition must be vibrant to evolve a credible leadership, said absence of credible opposition might make the ruling party to become complacent.

Kalu has urged politicians across the divide in Oyo State to support Governor Abiola Ajimobi, to promote good governance and leadership.

He spoke yesterday during a visit to the governor in his office in Ibadan.

According to him, Nigerians should shun party sentiment in the process of choosing leaders, stressing that parties should no longer be the focal point in the selection of leaders, in order to move the country forward.

  • Kalu delivers UNN lecture

FORMER Abia State Governor Dr. Orji Kalu will, next Tuesday, deliver a lecture at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

The lecture, with the theme: “Youth Empowerment and Good Governance: Vital Tools for Economic Development”, is expected to attract participants from all walks of life.

A statement by the organisers of the event, the Nigeria Economic Students Association (NESA), UNN chapter, said Kalu’s presentation would establish the critical interconnectedness between youth empowerment, good governance and economic transformation.

The President, NESA, UNN branch, Eze Peter, said: “This critical synergy requires a cross-pollination of ideas between the academic community and successful entrepreneurs.

“This nexus of academics and practical experience about the subject informed the choice of Kalu, one of Nigeria’s youthful and successful entrepreneurs with flourishing business tentacles spread across countries in the sub-region.”

Besides members of the academia, who will be in attendance, multi-disciplinary professionals from sectors and countries are expected to attend the lecture at the institution’s main auditorium.

Kalu, a leadership icon and a business mogul, will draw from his experience as an accomplished international businessman.

The organisers said UNN students were looking forward to the lecture, which is free and open to the public.

Okiro, Kalu, Ifijeh, others mourn art enthusiast Mrs Odigie

Former Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, former Governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, and former Electoral Commissioner with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Philips Umeadi, were among mourners at the funeral rites held in Abuja for art enthusiast, Mrs. Jane Ihuoma Odigie.

Many were pained by her hasty departure; they were, however, consoled by testimonies to the effect that she did not just live a pious life; she was also affable, humane and generous.

The mother of three and wife of Abuja-based businessman and Chief Executive Officer, Bedding Holdings Limited, Chief (Dr.) Sylvester Odigie, succumbed to cancer on November 4 at the age of 40 after battling the ailment for five years.

The funeral rites began on December 5 with a service-of-songs held at Holy Trinity Church, Maitama and ended the next day with her interment at the Gudu Cemetery, Abuja.

The interment was preceded by a requiem mass held earlier in the day at the Maitama church where the officiating priest, Reverend Father Justin Onyemaechi, reminded all that death was inevitable.

“Even though our dear sister has passed on at a tender age, it is not a death in vain, but a death that merits reward. From all testimonies, it is obvious she lived a good life and that everyone loved her. This is a clarion call to all of us here to always be prepared and move closer to God. We never know when the time will come,” he said.

Some of her beautifully created paintings adorned a page of the brochure containing events schedule. She was a graduate of Graphic Arts from the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.

As the priest brought the mass to a close, the pallbearers moved the brown coffin into a hearse parked by the church’s entrance. And in no time, Mrs Odigie commenced the last lap of her final journey as the hearse moved out of the church premises,  and headed for the Gudu Cemetery.

At the grave side, Rev. Onyemaechi said some prayers. But as her remains were being lowered into the grave, and the deceased’s little children performed the dust-to-dust rite, many succumbed to emotion and wept.

Mrs. Nwangwu, the deceased’s mother, who is in her early 60s, wept uncontrollably as she watched her first child being interred.

Also in attendance were the Editor-in-Chief, The Nation newspapers, Victor Ifijeh; Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Marvel Akpoyibo; former Managing Director of the now defunct Fortune Bank, Fidelis Tilije; and Austin Odili.

The widower described her wife as a wonderful person and a loving companion who had left a void no one could fill.

“My dear wife was not only a wonderful wife, but she was a meticulous housekeeper and homemaker. She was a cheerful, friendly person who made many friends. She seldom criticized any person.  Instead, she preferred to refer to their good qualities.

“She was the soul and heart of honesty. She would never shade the truth no matter what consequences. Everyone loved her. She was special, very special. She carried a very special charm and friendly personality that so easily endeared her to people. Even while she was undergoing treatment in Germany, she made both young and old friends. Most importantly, she loved her church, and was faithful to her allotted task,” he said.

  • Kalu calls for resolution of PDP crisis

former Abia State Governor Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has called for the quick resolution of the crisis facing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Kalu, who is one of the founding fathers of the party, said the splitting of the party into factions, following its recent special national convention, should be handled with care so that the prediction that the party will implode before 2015 does not come true.

The former governor said in a statement by his Special Adviser, Oyekunle Oyewumi, that the two sides to the conflict should quickly find a common ground to resolve their differences.

Kalu said: “Both former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Dr. Bamanga Tukur as seasoned politicians, no doubt, have what it takes to resolve political differences. It is in the interest of the party and Nigerians for this to be sorted out as quickly as possible, considering the fact that the party is in government at the federal level and in most states.

“A house divided against itself will, obviously, not stand. And it is not in our interest both as founders and joiners for us not to bring down the house we laboured very hard to build.”

Kalu called on the stakeholders in the party, especially former and current members of the Board of Trustees, the National Working Committee and the National Executive Council, to intervene urgently before the crisis gets out of control.

  • Kalu condoles with Abia PDP

Former Abia State Governor Orji Kalu has commiserated with the families of eight members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, who died in an accident on the Anambra-Enugu Expressway on Tuesday.

Kalu, in a statement by his Special Adviser, Oyekunle Oyewumi, said: “I was shocked when I received the news of the death of some members of our party, who were on official assignment ahead of the Anambra State governorship election.

“It is a painful exit coming at a time the members’ input and support to the party was much needed.”

  • Kalu defaults in land use charge payment, says Lagos govt

Lagos State Government last night declared former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu as a defaulter in the payment of the land use charge.

It said the ex-governor’s Ikoyi house was sealed off as a result of his indebtedness.

In a statement by Commissioner for Information and Strategy Mr Aderemi Ibirogba, the Lagos government said:

“The fact is that Mr. Orji Uzor Kalu’s property in Park View Estate, Ikoyi was distrained, pursuant to Section 40 of the Revenue Administration Law of Lagos State for failure to pay the statutory annual land use charge despite three separate notices delivered to the said property.

“As a government driven by law and process, the Lagos State Government will ordinarily expect all law abiding residents to discharge their responsibilities to the state.

“If, in spite of failing to do so, Mr. Orji Uzor Kalu wants to give ethnic colouration to a routine performance of its duties by an agency of the state government, which in this case is the Land Use Charge Office, under the Ministry of Finance, he is welcome to do so.

“However it should be noted that when the issue was brought to the attention of the Governor, Tuesday evening, he directed the agency to unseal the property and that an additional 14 days grace period be given to Mr. Kalu to pay the said charge.

”It should be emphasised that notices like these are served on defaulting property owners on a regular basis who either comply or contact the Agency to raise any objections they might have to such notice. Mr. Orji Uzor Kalu, like every other citizen, must fulfil his obligation to the State.

Kalu had in a statement said  his criticism of alleged deportation of Igbo by the Lagos State government, led to the sealing off of his house.

The statement by Emeka Obasi, his media adviser, said the sealing off, was “done as a revenge for the criticism by Kalu, who is the Coordinator of Njiko Igbo, a group fighting the cause of the Southeast.”

Obasi said the property had been there for several years and that sealing it after just two weeks of his boss criticsing Fashola over the deportation issue was an indication that there was more to it.
