Henshaw: restrict  pupils’  social media, phone use

Actress Kate Henshaw has emphasised the need to restrict pupils  from having access to mobile phones and social media.

She noted that children  are surrounded by screens  and it’s becoming harder for them to maintain focus on their studies and character development.

Henshaw delivered Chrisland Schools End-of-Year Lecture in Opebi, Lagos, with  the theme: “Appreciating Parents’ and Teachers’ Investments Within Modern-Day Distractions.”

The actress also urged the Federal Government to go the way of Australia which announced a restriction on social media access for under-16s.

“ December 10, the Australian government restricted the use of social media for under-16s.

“I think it’s relatable because we need to talk about how digital tools affect young people, cyberbullying, and the pressure to compare themselves with what they see online,” she said.

“We are living in a digital world. During my time, we didn’t grow up with smartphones and the internet. We had real human connections.

“Children today are surrounded by screens fighting for their attention, and it’s becoming harder for them to focus on their studies and character development,” she said.

Henshaw stressed the need for parents to put their wards in check regarding the use of phones.

“The world on social media is not real. Children start to second-guess themselves, feel unfulfilled, or think they deserve what their friends have without knowing if they even need it. Parents must be present, otherwise the devices will take over,” she added.

Chrisland Schools Director, Mrs Ayoola Akinyeye, said bringing the actress to the  school demystifies the social media world and helps the pupils  confront the pressures they face.

According to her, pupils’ devices have antivirus software and content filters to block harmful sites, adding that additional filters are installed on the school’s server, with more restrictions preventing them from  bypassing controls on their devices.

Akinyeye emphasised the importance of protecting pupils  online through collaboration between schools and parents.

“Teenagers will misuse social media; it’s part of their growth. What we do is teach them the dangers and help them build the right habits,” she added.

Birthday message to Kate Henshaw, sincere, not flirtatious – Jim Iyke

Actor Jim Iyke has finally addressed the controversy surrounding his emotional birthday message to Kate Henshaw.

In a recent interview, Jim Iyke clarified that the message was a genuine expression of their deep and longstanding friendship, which has spanned over two decades.

He emphasised that the message wasn’t meant to be romantic or s3xual but a reflection of their bond.

According to Jim Iyke, Kate Henshaw is one of the few people he can speak to without fear of judgment, describing her as someone he trusts completely and can be vulnerable with.

He explained that their friendship is built on mutual trust and respect, stating Kate is someone he can speak his truth to and get honest advice from.

Iyke said: “I meant everything I said in that post. I rarely say something I don’t mean. I don’t waste words. My words are my bound. I have known this person for over two decades of my life. We have grown as friends and as brother and sister.

“What happened was a wordplay that was told in a space of a comfort zone that only two people or less can cohabit. Because these are words that either resonate clearly in your head and never find expression through your voice; you carry them forever and one day you said, ‘F**k it’, take a pen and let the word have a glimpse of how you feel about certain people.

“I know the feeling is mutual. There’s nothing absolutely s3xual about it [the birthday tribute]. It doesn’t even suggest someone I’m dating. This is someone I can speak my truth to and get honest advice from. It’s just a genuine friendship.”

Jim Iyke also addressed the widespread reactions to his message, stating that many people misinterpreted it and projected their meanings into it.

He noted that he doesn’t owe anyone an explanation and doesn’t live by public opinion, adding that he spoke as only he can speak.

In an Instagram post, Iyke expressed deep admiration and past romantic feelings for Henshaw, reflecting on their early days together in Nollywood.

“You knew all that time I wanted to hit that,” Jim Iyke wrote bluntly in the emotional post.

He recalled how Henshaw supported him during his struggling days, giving him money for food and transport, and sharing audition tips.

Iyke’s post was met with mixed reactions, with some praising his honesty and others finding it disrespectful.

One user analysed the post from a literary perspective, highlighting the use of poetic devices.

Awaekuriobi wrote, “Only literary students deeply rooted by their love for literature could vividly depict and bring out the subject matter, surface and deeper meaning of this song like poem. His attitude is that of admiration of the beautiful moments he shared with Kates. His tone is that of frustration for not getting the chance in his 20s to create beautiful memories because of his naivity and youthful exuberance ce but he is overall proud of what they had shared and the unique personality Kate has been able to secure for herself that’s worth emulating. His diction is simple for better understanding. His constant used of ” Fuck you” brings out the poetic device “Alliteration” This sound like répétition of the words fuck you shows their play like language in the days. The use of Pun, metaphor and the irregular rythme scheme shows he is and will forever be proud of Kate”.

Kate Henshaw slams online age-shaming trolls

Seasoned actress Kate Henshaw has spoken out against ageism, condemning the practice of shaming individuals based on their age.

In a video message, Henshaw expressed her frustration with young people, particularly men, who use age as a means of insult.

According to Henshaw, aging is a privilege that should be celebrated, and she emphasised the importance of self-acceptance and confidence.

She challenged societal norms and expectations, questioning who has the authority to dictate standards for age and appearance.

Henshaw asserted her own confidence, stating that she cannot be age-shamed,  urging individuals to focus on living their lives authentically and embracing their uniqueness.

She said: “It is utterly incredulous and laughable that the first thing out of people’s mouths, especially those who are younger than you, especially the young men, the younger ones, when they want to think that they want to shame you, is to say, old, this old person, old woman, old.

“Do you people want to die young? It’s a question that I need you to answer. Because when you wish people happy birthdays and long life, why do you think that abusing or using the word old, you are old, will make someone feel less than who they are? Me, nobody can shame me. Nobody. Nobody can shame me on anything. That’s the real truth.

“It is a tired old line that should be done away with. Aging is a privilege denied so many. The freedom that I have, that many who are my age get from just being themselves. I’m not giving to cobble what y’all think about is a superpower. You have no idea what it feels like to be at my age or older. So when you people use those lines, it’s like, I laugh.

“Because there are people who want to get to this age, they pray. And then you think that you can age shame people. And then you think you can also tell them how to dress, how to look. You haven’t been to that age. So why do you think that you can dictate to anyone older than you, how they should appear? Let me tell you, you’re going at the days when society is not a ghost. I keep asking, who is society?

“Society is made up of you and I, everyone else out there. Billions of people in the world, across the globe. And people think that a few people in the hamlets or in a village can decide or dictate, feel that this is how things should be. Who are you? And who made you set the standard? And who set you as the standard? And who made you the principal, judge and jury? Ageism is dead. It’s dead. Unless people are insecure about who they are and their age. Because it makes no sense.

“I am proud and I’m sure there are many people out there who are happy that they have gotten to the age they have gotten. To be honest. Because you wish, you so wish. But if you keep thinking that you can age shame, broke shame, just shame. You will be the one bearing the brunt of the shame at the end of the day. Anyway, so that’s my true cover on age shame. All this, all that, this and that. It’s tiring. Can’t you have a better abuse or insult? Something that will really hit home. Without still be anything that they will say to me these days. Doesn’t bother me. But for anyone out there who feels like, Oh my age is, please just live your life.

“You see this life. Nobody has the manual for it. Nobody knows tomorrow. Nobody knows the next second. You keep living your life for people. You’ll be so disappointed. Just face God. Face you. Face yourself. Because if you really have honest conversations with yourself. There’s nothing anybody can tell you. Because they’re not speaking to you. They’re speaking at you. Two different things. You know who you are. Stand in your truth. Stand in all of your awesomeness, your wholeness, your power. In who you are. You are created differently.

” When God created human beings. He didn’t do WhatsApp group. You know everybody together. We’re all individuals. Separate. But awesome all the same. I think that’s about it. Oh by the way.”

Henshaw noted that surrogacy should be approached with caution, considering the emotional and physical risks involved.

She called for stricter laws in Nigeria to govern surrogacy arrangements, prioritising the health and safety of all parties involved.

She said, “Surrogacy is a means to exploit people who are not financially capable, you just pay them as they have a child for me. But then what will, what will make you want to look after them? Are you bound under any laws or legal framework to make sure that they are taken care of before and after they deliver the baby for you?

“What are the documents that are signed? There’s just so much around it. Surrogacy is a process of giving hope to those who cannot have or have medical complications and want to bring forth a child.

“It shouldn’t be something to be done lightly, there are lots of emotions attached to carrying a child, apart from the changes in the body. There are mental changes. Women, there’s so much, they can die, you know? So it shouldn’t be something to be just thought of lightly.

“I hope Nigeria rises to me. I hope we have laws that will work and not be suggestions, like you always say”.

Nigerian men don’t see women as equals – Kate Henshaw

Actress Kate Henshaw has spoken out against the persistent inequality faced by women, criticising both societal attitudes and legal frameworks that reinforce gender bias.

Referencing the biblical creation story, Henshaw argued that women were created as equals to men, not as subordinates.

She lamented how cultural and legal norms have distorted this principle, contributing to longstanding gender disparity.

The actress pointed to specific laws in Nigeria that she believes institutionalise discrimination, such as citizenship provisions that favour foreign women married to Nigerian men, while denying the same rights to foreign men married to Nigerian women.

She also condemned aspects of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law that permit men to “reasonably chastise” their wives, describing such clauses as enablers of domestic abuse.

Henshaw called for urgent legal reforms to ensure equal rights and protection for women under Nigerian law.

She said, “God created man and woman. He created the man first, no doubt. Even pastors and churches are at fault for this. He (God) brought the woman from the side, not from the head over the man or from under to be beneath him but beside, to reign beside him, to be fruitful, multiply and bring up children and grow together but Nigerian men see women as less than human that is why when you leave these shores and go somewhere else, they show you people pepper.

“You see us as this wood…even our laws, the violence against persons’ prohibition laws favour the man…A man is reasonably allowed to chastise his wife”.
