Ngozi Ezeonu right to reprimand ‘braless’ girls at audition – Kate Henshaw

Seasoned actress Kate Henshaw has reacted to the recent controversy surrounding colleague Ngozi Ezeonu’s scolding of braless girls during an audition.

In a video that went viral, Ngozi Ezeonu was seen reprimanding the girls for their outfits, emphasising that an audition is a professional setting.

Kate Henshaw expressed support for Ngozi Ezeonu’s stance, stating that an audition is essentially a job interview and should be treated with the seriousness it deserves.

She argued that participants should dress professionally and not as if they were going for a casual errand.

Kate also addressed criticisms from social media users who argued that Ngozi Ezeonu had no right to tell auditionees how to dress.

She emphasised that Ngozi Ezeonu has every right to set standards for her audition and that participants should respect those standards.

Henshaw said in a video: “I don’t know what bra did to you, you just want to jangle everywhere, that’s on you. But if you’re going somewhere for an interview, an audition is an interview for a role, you don’t dress as if you’re going down the road to buy sugar and groundnuts. I don’t blame them, I blame us for making entries so easy. This is a profession that has Aunty Joke, RMD, Ego Boyo, Aunty Ngozi Ezeonu, Aunty Patience, Aunty Taiwo Ajayi-Lycett, the late Sam Loco Efe, so many greats.

“If they don’t teach you at home, you will be taught outside. Then someone on X app said ‘she’s not their mother or family member to tell them how to dress’ You don’t want to dress well, stay at home.

“She has every right to say she doesn’t want to see this kind of dressing at her audition, and so it should be. Let’s put some respect on ourselves and what we’re coming to do.”

In a recent post on X, she voiced her disapproval of the common excuse used to justify lateness in African societies.

The comments highlighted the importance of punctuality and respect for other people’s time

A comment read: “That’s true. The nonsensical phrase ‘African time’ isn’t even true about our African culture. Our forefathers, who relied on the rooster’s crow, didn’t seem like people who took other people’s time for granted. Some people just find a convenient theory to justify their mediocrity.”

“No one misses an embassy appointment unless something is after him or her,” another follower remarked.

Another X user wrote: “There is literally no reason to justify the idea of ‘African time’ because it has over time promoted late coming, and portrays Africa as a continent with a bad sense of time. The concept of time is one and ought to be the same in every continent.”

“I said this to someone recently, Baba told me ‘Komot dia, u wey don get European mentality.’ The fact is we go earlier to places that have to do with money but claim African Time for other stuff,” another user wrote.

The UNICEF ambassador made the call in Bauchi while briefing newsmen on her field trip with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Bauchi Field Office to observe immunization exercises in Bauchi state.

According to her, there should also be accessible healthcare facilities to address barriers like distance and transportation challenges.

She said: “There is the need for the establishment of more Primary Healthcare Centres because I could guess that maybe the distance that the women have to travel in order to get care or to take their children could be a barrier.

“Also, I observed that the mode of transportation is motorcycles and I wouldn’t feel too comfortable carrying my baby on a bike going all the way. So, there has to be a better incentive which is bringing the care to them closer. Even if you will have to bring skilled workers to them at home but also make sure that they come to the hospital to deliver
