Update: Security, corruption, economy top Kwanwaso’s 2015 agenda

Kano State governor, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Tuesday formally joined the race for the sole presidential ticket of the All Progressive Congress (APC), placing security at the top of his agenda for the nation if elected President.

Kwankwaso said it was governance that led the country to its present position, pointing out that a government under him will fight to defeat the Boko Haram insurgency and other sectarian violence in the country.

Addressing a mammoth crowd at the Old Parade ground in Abuja, the former Defence Minister, said he was joining the race to help reclaim “our country from the clutches of incompetence and destruction and return it onto the pedestal of peace and progress.”

He accused the President Goodluck Jonathan’s led administration of using religious, ethnic, sectional and other primordial sentiments to cover, protect and promote corruption in public life, adding that these same sentiments are being used to polarise and divide the country in order to perpetually remain in power.

He stressed that as a nation, we must stand up together as one people to fight corruption, impunity and division, lamenting that every facet of our national life is deteriorating while governance has been reduced to mediocrity, incompetence and impunity.

While acknowledging the difficulty of the task ahead, he said: “I have no illusion about the enormity of the challenges. But to save our country, we must walk the journey, however difficult. And we must confront and defeat all the challenges, however monstrous.”

“The first priority of this country at this moment is restoring peace and security in every corner of the land. Lives and properties of our citizens must be protected and secured.

“Boko Haram and all forms of insurgency must be defeated. As a government, we cannot afford to live in denial. Insecurity is escalating at an alarming rate. Little wonder rag-tag insurgents are taking over cities and towns in the Northeast.

“My experiences as Nigeria’s Defence Minister and as Special Adviser on war-torn Darfur and Somalia have shown me that securing a nation and fighting and defeating armed insurgents can only be achieved if the forces are professionally mobilized, properly kitted and equipped, highly spirited, and correctly armed with intelligence and munitions.

“My experiences have shown me that technology must be deployed in addition to mobilizing and cultivating the support of local communities. Cross-border intelligence is a veritable ingredient necessary to defeat armed insurgents,” the presidential hopeful stated.

2015: Kwankwaso keeps Kano on edge over successor

Adeyinka Aderibigbe takes a look at race to succeed outgoing Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso

AS the 2015 poll draws closer, the question on the lips of many well meaning citizens of Kano State is who would succeed Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso whose second term tenure winds down on May 29, next year.

Kwankwaso, who is taking a shot at the presidency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has kept sealed lips on his successor. The question begging answers are; would he join the wagon of governors anointing their successor or will he abide by APC’s internal democratic rule that stipulates the choice of the party’s flag bearer through the modified direct primary option?

Those tagged as the real Kwankwasiyya men are already squaring up to occupy the Africa House in the race that promises to be not only a fierce one between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) but the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), already boasting of dozens of aspirants.

Some analysts are saying that within the APC circle, the fight for the ticket may be, on the one hand between members of the Kwankwasiyya block and those of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

Already, his deputy, Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje and former Kano State governor and serving senator representing Kano South Senatorial District, Kabiru Gaya, have signified interest to take a shot at the seat under the platform of the APC, which is the dominant political party in Kano.

Kwankwaso, who of late is reaching out to critical stakeholders of the APC to actualise his presidency bid has kept a sealed lip on his succession plan. But insiders said he will not give his blessing to what he termed “a disloyal successor that could rubbish the tremendous infrastructural development recorded in the state in the last four years.”

There is a consensus among chieftains of the APC that if whoever emerges as the candidate of the APC is picked based on fairness, and equity and a sound experience in the affairs of governance, the party would not only be crises free, but would be guaranteed an easy win at the 2015 poll in Kano.

In 2003, Kwankwaso who is much more familiar with the devastating effect of intra party crises lost in his bid for a second term under the platform of the PDP to a relatively unknown Ibrahim Skekarau of the then All Peoples Party (APP). He was to later reclaim his second term mandate at the 2011 poll incidentally due to an intra-party crisis in the ANPP over Shekarau’s resolve to anoint Salihu Sagir Takai.

So, the PDP, which has suddenly found itself as an underdog in Kano, would be hoping that there would be crisis in APC so that it would take advantage of it to reclaim Kano. We gathered leaders of PDP in the state are praying there would be an impending succession tussle in APC. But given Kwankwaso’s recent comments that he believes in free and fair elections, it seems the opposition waiting in the wings may be disappointed as the ruling APC in Kano seems poised for a peaceful primaries.

As a result the number of aspirants ready to succeed Kwankwanso is growing by the day.

Among the red capped chieftains of the APC angling for the governorship of Kano on the platform of the APC is Ganduje who have actually paid his dues having worked closely with Kwankwaso for nearly one and a half decade without any rancour. Ganduje, a graduate of Public Administration, has vast years of experience in public service.  The top technocrat, who served in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) over two decades ago, is described by his associates as the one that understood the Kwankwasiya philosophy of governance to take Kano to the next level of development.  He came to limelight when he was prevailed upon by the likes of the late Alhaji Abubakar Rimi to step down for Kwankwaso who eventually emerged the consensus candidate of the PDP in the 1999 governorship poll.

Sixteen years after, he not only joined Kwankwaso to defect to the APC last year, but has also stayed glued to Kwankwaso through thick and thin right from their days in the Kano Government House from 1999 to 2003 all through Kwakwanso’s days as Defence Minister, to his present position as a second term deputy governor.

Ganduje who enjoys a wide reach of acceptability among the influential Muslim clerics and youths talked about his 2015 poll ambition when confronted by newsmen thus: “I’m interested but I’m not declaring now. I pray when I do, you will support me,” adding: “Ours is a party that was just put in place, of course, with Kwankwasiya members dominating the show. Kwankwasiya group is a highly disciplined group, we take decision at appropriate time and when we do, we all follow it.

“For me as a person if I say I’m contesting for Kano governorship race come 2015, it is no news but if I say I’m not contesting that is the news. So, you people should wait for the time that I will declare my intention. Ambiguity is one of the flavours of politics,” he said.

Another member of the Kwankwasiya group that might take a shot at the seat are the Secretary to the Government, Suleiman Bichi, an engineer and a close associate of Kwankwaso. Widely considered as a member of Kwankwaso’s think-tank, he wields enormous influence considering the fact that he had served as Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning and Managing Director of Urban Development Bank during the first term of Kwankwaso. Bichi was rumoured to have resigned his appointment penultimate week to openly pursue his aspirations.

Also likely to join the race are a former Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Alhaji Ahmed Garba. Others include Alhaji Abba Kabiru Yusuf, the Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport who is Kwankwaso’s in-law and former Chief of Staff and Dr. Yunusa Adamu Dan Gwani who was recently deployed to Ministry of Water Resources as commissioner.

As the tussle gathers momentum, the streets of Kano are already awash with posters of Senator Kabiru Gaya, and those of the Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abdulralman Kawu Sumaila who was once former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau’s allies in their days in the ANPP.

Gaya who had a stint as governor in the botched Third Republic is presently the Chairman of the Senate Committee on State and Local Government Administration. He remarked that he is better placed to take Kano to the next level if elected at the 2015 poll.

Former deputy governor of the state, Alhaji Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo who aspired for the seat under the platform of the defunct ACN governorship candidate in the 2011 poll and former governor of Kaduna State, Brig Gen Lawal Jafaru Isa, who also aspired on the platform of the CPC in the 2011 poll may also be waiting to take a second shot at the seat this time round.

From the PDP end is Mohammed Abacha, who fought tooth and nail to vie for the governorship of Kano on the platform of the CPC at the 2011 poll. Since he got a clean bill of health from the Federal Government over allegations of money laundering, he has refurbished his campaign office and had been reaching out to critical stakeholders of the party to take a shot at the office again.

Abba Risqua, son of the late Head of State, Gen Murtala Ramat Muhammed, who is a surprise entrant into the race would have to slug it out with Mohammed Abacha, who with the enormous resources at his disposal would be difficult to stop when the chips are down.

Penultimate week, Abba Risqua who made an unsuccessful bid to dislodge former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Umar NaÁbba, from the Kano Municipal Federal Constituency in 2003, formally declared his bid for the exalted seat in Kano and rolled out his developmental agenda which encompasses industrialisation and provision of jobs for the teeming population of the state.

There is also the former commissioner of water resources and local government, Alhaji Sagir Takai, who may be propped once more by Shekarau who has now assumed the leadership role of the Kano PDP by virtue of his position as the Minister of Education.

As unpredictable as Kano politics would remain for a long time to come, APC, it seems, stands a very good chance of sweeping the polls in Kano once it makes the right choice.

  • I am very optimistic, I will win -Kwankwaso

Kano State governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, spoke briefly on his presidential ambition and APC’S determination to capture power at the centre in 2015. Kolade Adeyemi recorded the chat.

YOU said you will formerly declare your presidential ambition for 2015, 28th October, how is it going so far?

We couldn’t get the venue. We have applied to get Eagle Square because so many people will be happy to storm there to witness the event. But we are now struggling to get alternative. Thats where we are now with regards to venue. But if it is not granted, I will invite you to the Abuja streets to hold the occasion there. I don’t know the authorities’ reason to deny me the venue.

There is this rumour that you are planning to step down your presidential ambition for a particular candidate. Is this true?

I am not under pressure to step down for anybody. In fact, nobody came to ask me to step down for anybody, in as much as nobody has contacted me to step down, doing that will not be good for the party. You see, so many people are used to either small parties or medium size parties, where people sit down and chose somebody in a room.  APC is not a medium or small party where a candidate can be chosen in a room.  APC is a mega party. It is not ANPP, it is not APGA, it is not CPC, it is not ACN; it is a collection of all.

I always tell people to look at the example of PDP since 1999 to 2011; in each election, people went for primaries, not arranged elections. Real election, primary election, even when we had a sitting president in 2003 and 2011, there were primary electionthat is why the PDP won all along and others who are involved in stage-managing primary elections always lost elections. Now, the PDP has decided to conduct its primary election at the villa while APC holds its own in a field. This clearly shows that the APC will win the elections in 2015.

You seem not to be in support of consensus?

You see, there is that provision, but I always say that we have always been consistent. But you see many people who are soliciting for this consensus bear in mind that when people sit down and resolve the matter, the consensus would go to their favourite candidate; that is consensus to them. That is the main issue, but I believe we have to make this party very strong. All aspirants should go round the country to bring more people into the party, and that is exactly what I am doing. So many people joined the APC for me in the last few weeks and will continue to join, especially if I get the ticket. Most of the guys will cross over to APC when I declare or stay in the PDP but will work for me. This is because many of them are hooked there (PDP) for one reason or the other, but they are with us.

Are you comfortable with the party’s constitution amendment coming up before the presidential primaries?

The APC’s primary elections will be in line with the provision of the party’s constitution.

You keep saying some PDP governors are with you and will defect to APC, but each time you make this statement, they deny such claim?

The people that are denying the claim are the ones already with us. I am not too much worried about their comments. They go there but just floating in the air. The people of this country are with APC, so they stay there, thinking that they can rig election in 2015, but the masses will come out with their brooms and deal with them. They will vote and make sure they protect their votes. So, that is what we would do. They know that on the Election Day, they will go and prepare fake documents and say they have won the election. People across the country are wiser now and are very angry.

How optimistic are you that you will get support from other candidates within APC after winning the primary election?

I am very optimistic. For me, if I win the primary election, I will be very happy and I am sure the other contestants would support and work together with me. I am sure if any one of us wins the primaries, we would support him. What is important to us is to have a free and fair primary election. That is why we are telling the INEC and other stakeholders that they shouldn’t go and take dictation from the villa and write figures to declare them winners. That won’t be acceptable in 2015. They must do the right thing at the right time.

Is there any clue about your successor after expiration of your tenure?

It is premature to start speculation now. The primary election time table and the forms will soon be available. But of course we will look at the possibility of consensus; if that would not be achieved, then every APC member is free to go and grab the form to contest for the primary election at the venue of the election. So that is the policy, we don’t stop anybody. We are democratic. People are free to purchase forms and contest for elections here. I always tell the people that out of the 12 elections that I contested, I won 11 and lost 1, but I never won any under consensus. I always found a candidate to contest with, so I am personally very much used to that. So, if I think I am used to it, anybody in the party can think the same way. Any politician in the game of politics that doesn’t want to contest for election, either primary or secondary election, is like a wash man who doesn’t want to touch water. So, he should better go and get another business.

Are you comfortable with INEC’s creation of additional polling unit in Kano State?

Well, geographically, North is big. The explanation given by the INEC for the increment was to shorten distances for voters. I think that makes sense. But to me, what is more important is to mobilise people to go and vote irrespective of distance, by any means of transportation. But it would be a good thing if INEC decides to reduce the distance for voters whether in the North or South.

Recently, the Federal Government declared ceasefire with Boko Haram group, but few days after the truce, they lunched fresh attacks, do you have any suspicion over the issue?

I wasn’t part of the arrangement. You may know better than me. I just watched it on TV that there was a ceasefire but unfortunately the killings continued. I wondered who were the people involved in the agreement, how credible they were, I don’t know. But people are tired of losing lives and properties in this country. The government, whether through dialogue or force, must stop insurgency in the North-East and other parts of the country. The issue of insurgency, armed robbery, kidnappings and so on, must be stopped.

On the issue of venue for your presidential declaration, do you think your millions of supporters would take on the Abuja streets if you are not given the venue?

I know so many people will go to Abuja to witness my declaration. Even if you are a supporter, you can go and witness the event. Let’s wait and see. But certainly, we will get the venue. What we just want is for the government to do the right thing; the people will also do the right thing to the government.

  • We ‘ll accept outcome of APC primaries, says Kwankwaso

The Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, yesterday said the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not split because of presidential primaries.

He also said none of the party’s presidential aspirants will defect to the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) or any party after losing the presidential ticket.

He  added that the emergence of President Goodluck Jonathan as PDP presidential candidate is “not a settled matter.”

On the insurgency in the North-East, he asked the Federal Government to negotiate or crush Boko Haram insurgents.

Kwankwaso, who made the submissions at a briefing in Abuja, said Nigerians were already tired of PDP and would effect a change in 2015.

He disclosed that he would make a formal declaration on October 28 in Abuja

Kwankwaso, who exuded much confidence, said: “I don’t think any of us will contemplate leaving APC, if none of us gets the ticket to fly the flag of the party.

“Whatever is the case during our primaries, we are coming together as a family to ensure the success of our party .

“You see for people like me, who have millions of supporters, it is not easy for me to be flying from one party to the other.

“On the issue of consensus, that is already in our constitution and I believe it is very important. We do not know what the party has in mind. While consensus has an advantage, so also going for primaries.

“As far as I am concerned, there will be either consensus or primaries and one person will win and emerge as our candidate. I don’t think anyone of us will have reason to leave the party.  I am confident I will get the ticket

“But in case I don’t get the ticket in free and fair primaries, I will not leave APC.

“And what I said about not stepping down was clear. I said I did not sit with anybody to discuss that. Each one of us is already in the field seeking support.”

The governor expressed confidence that APC can defeat PDP in 2015.

He added: “Nigerians are sick and tired of PDP; our people want change. During the administration of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, the level of insecurity was low. But the graph is now rising  to the extent that in some parts of the country, people are flying flags other than the nation’s Green, White, Green.”

Asked if the incumbency factor will not boost the chances of PDP, he added: “I want to remind you that in elections, whether in developing or developed countries, you normally have fatigue. PDP has won elections four times, fatigue has set in.

“In all civilized or developed societies, parties always win elections two or three times and people naturally ask for change whether they are doing well or not.”

Responding to a question on President Jonathan’s qualification for 2015 poll, he said: “I am not sure if it is settled. If it was settled, he would have declared a long time ago. Instead, he kept peeping outside to see if the coast was clear.

“The constitution says a President must spend eight years in office, not eight and a half years.”

On insurgency, Kwankwaso said: “As for me, the issue of whoever is fueling the insurgency, whether the party in government or the party not in government, does not matter. We have two options: these are either to negotiate or crush them militarily.

“We have passed the level of who is behind it; we have to end the insurgency. We must not put politics into the issue of doing it.

“All of us should join hands with the Commander-In-Chief to support the military. Also, anyone who takes over this government on May 29, 2015, his number one priority should be security for all Nigerians.”

  • Jonathan is easy to defeat, says Kwankwaso

Jonathan is easy to defeat, says Kwankwaso

Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has said President Goodluck Jonathan is “the easiest president in the world for any opposition party to defeat in an election”.

Kwankwaso, who is a presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), premised his argument on the “anger, general disillusionment and disenchantment against the Jonathan administration.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, he said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would not last beyond 2015, having spent 16 years in power.

The governor said Nigeria needs a leader who could instil discipline and effect needed changes, adding: “Jonathan is the easiest sitting president to defeat in an election because of the insecurity in the land. The foremost responsibility of any government is the security of the people.

“You people are not in the front line and that is why you may not understand the gravity of the situation. As I speak with you, some people are on the hills, in the forest, under mountains taking refuge; they are internally displaced. Just yesterday (Monday), we sent seven trucks of relief materials to our people in refugee camps in Niger Republic.

“Unfortunately, we have leaders in Nigeria who have divided the county along religious and ethnic lines. Other countries are making progress but here we are being fed with statistics that cannot be verified. I think Jonathan should be happy if we unseat him because it will help him to go and rest.

“Change is possible once you get the right agent of change. What has happened in Kano State, for instance, has never happened and what made it possible was that the people had a new governor in 2011; it was that simple. We need people who are disciplined in Nigeria; people who mean what they say and stick to it.”

  • ‘Kwankwaso is qualified to run for president’

‘Kwankwaso is qualified to run for president’

Subsequent to a possible failure in efforts to broker consensus among the contending presidential aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is set to declare his intention to contest the election on the platform of the party on Thursday.

Our correspondent gathered that the delay in the declaration of the presidential ambition by General Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Kwankwaso may possibly not be unconnected with efforts to get one of them to step down for the other.

Both aspirants hail from the North West zone of the country which is believed to have the largest number of registered voters in the country.

A chieftain of the APC and one of the campaign coordinators of Governor Kwankwaso, Chief Olisaemeka Akamukali, said baring any change in plan and any unforeseen circumstances, Governor Kwankwaso had concluded plans to publicly declare his presidential ambition on October 23.

He revealed that after a nation-wide consultation with party leaders and other political stakeholders regarding the presidential election, Kwankwaso has decided to throw his cap into the ring.

Akamukali, hinted that the governor might have delayed the kick-off of his campaign due to pressures to yield ground to General Buhari, stressing that rather than ask the governor to step down, it is the former Head of State that should make way for a younger and more vibrant candidate in line with the need for generational shift.

To Akamukali, it is wrong for anybody to regard the governor as a dark-horse in the contest, adding that Governor Kwankwaso has had long years of experience in politics; beginning from 1991 when he emerged as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

He said: “Kwankwaso has long years of experience in politics. He has been a parliamentarian, a governor and two-time minister. When he contested the governorship election in Kano State and lost, he congratulated the winner and waited for eight years before staging a come-back.

“The governor is a grassroots politician and one who carries his followers along in his undertakings. Today, many people describe him as a dark-horse in the presidential contest. This notion is wrong because many politicians, especially in the PDP, do not like what is happening in their party.

“Remember he was once a member of the group of seven governors who protested the goings-on in his former party. I will not be surprised if many of them still in the PDP will want to support his aspiration to become President.”

Akamukali dismissed claims that the former Nigerian leader, General Buhari was in control of Kano State, even as he pointed out that Kwankwaso as governor, is in total control of the party structures and commands the loyalty of most party men there.

He said if a politician’s pedigree is to be used as a yardstick, the governor stands out tall having transformed Kano State beyond all expectations, saying, “yes the governor might be a dark-horse because of the fact that he has never contested for the position of president before.

“But if as President Jonathan was regarded as the dark-horse before the 2011 general elections among other aspirants like Atiku, General Ibrahim Babangida and Ibrahim Gusau and he later triumphed, then being a dark-horse can be to Kwankwaso’s advantage.

“We want a change in this country. We want a president who is not a man that was hand-picked by a group of people and who will be held in bondage as it is happening today.

“The issue of anointing candidates for elections has been rejected by the APC and that is why the party insisted that there shall be primaries that must be seen to be transparent. The fears of some of the aspirants may be due to their previous experiences where they never faced competitive primaries to emerge as party candidates.

“That is why such people are pushing for consensus. Most party members want things done differently from what the PDP is doing. We must have a transparent primary.

“I can tell you that Kwankwaso has built a lot of bridges across the political divide. Remember, he came into the House of Representatives as a member of the then Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1991 and became Deputy Speaker.”

He maintained that both the National Leader of the party, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, party’s National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun-Odigie and former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar were together in the SDP with Governor Kwankwaso, adding that he is still retaining the affinity he had with the political network.

Akamukali disclosed that one factor that favours Kwankwaso is that he always carries his followers along in whatever he does. He said: “One other factor that is considered additional strength to the Kano State Governor is that whereas he has solid home-base support, his co-contestants such as Atiku and Buhari could not boast of being in control of the structures of the party in their home states.

“From the angle of qualification, the constitution is very clear on this. A man who has a doctorate degree in Engineering, academically is qualified, a man who has not been convicted by any competent court, a man whom the EFCC and other Federal Government anti-graft agencies have investigated and nothing was found against him is eminently qualified to contest for the president of the country,” Akamukali said.

In his welcome address, the Coordinator highlighted the challenges facing the Nigerian nation ranging from insecurity, corruption, executive lawlessness, impunity and a total lack of direction for the growth and development of the country. He lamented the unprecedented weaknesses with which the current PDP administration reacts to these major challenges. He spoke on the impact of Engineer Kwankwanso’s policy on education, poverty alleviation, infrastructural development and transparency and identified him as the most progressive Governor that can deliver the Nigerian nation. He therefore strongly called for a total support to ensure Kwankwanso’s emergence as the presidential flag bearer of APC.

The event was graced by prominent Nigerians like Alh. AminuAdamu, Deputy Chairman APC UK, Elder DuroLawal, Chief Charles Ebun-Amu, Charles Lawson, Chief Akinsanmi and the moderator of the event Mr KazeemOlasupo and many others.

In his address, Adamu attested to the transparency of Governor Kwankwanso’s administration in Kano state and emphasized that his laudable achievements are unparalleled. While stressing the governor’s transparent style of administration by upholding probity and accountability throughout the state civil service, he encouraged everyone to support Kwankwanso as the APC presidential candidate.

In his remarks, the Event Moderator, Mr KazeemOlasupo said that Nigerians have made errors in the past in choosing wrong leaders and that we must not allow the opportunity to elect a credible president to elude us in the 2015 election.

Mr Charles Lawson said he came from the same region with President Jonathan but noted that Nigeria needed a leader who will salvage it from its present state of hopelessness. “So, I am ready to mobilise the Niger Delta Youths for this man,” he added.

Also speaking, Elder DuroLawal maintained that the occurrence at the event and the video shown has gone far to convince him that Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwanso was the right man for the job. We must do everything possible to ensure his emergence not only as the Presidential flag bearer of the APC but as the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2015,” he stated. He ended his speech by re-echoing the much touted lingo at the event that “Nigeria does not need a boy but a man to do the job of salvaging the country.”

Kwankwaso backs consensus candidacy for APC

Ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Convention, Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has said that the party should go for a consensus presidential standard bearer.

Kwankwaso who presented what could be called his score card to the leadership of the National Assembly and the APC caucus yesterday, said though the party’s constitution provides for both consensus and primary election, the party should go for consensus.

He added that if the party fails to produce a consensus presidential candidate, the party should go for primary, which he said is also good for it.

Kwankwaso said, “I am happy that I left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). I am happy that we have a strong party that can defeat PDP. As an aspirant, I came here to brief you about our activities. Our constitution provided for consensus and provided for primary.

“I am personally calling for consensus, but if that didn’t happen, primary is also good for the party. PDP has already defeated itself. All we need to do is to ensure that it does not rise again.”

The Kano State Governor said that there was no doubt that a lot of Nigerians are sick and tired of the existing status quo.

According to him, “any leader, president, governor or local government chairman who decided to divide his people, to me, that leader is a very weak leader. You should convince your people by way of programme and projects; you don’t divide the people on religious lines, north or south, ethnicity and so on.”

Kwankwaso added: “I am very happy that APC was formed and therefore, let me thank all those who have worked so hard, the governors, members of the National Assembly, elders, all those who thought that we need a mega party.

“Now that we have a mega party I am sure the other party is shivering. We have done so much since the formation, ranging from the registration to the formation of the leadership at all levels to the various elections that we had across the country.

“I am happy that I left PDP, I am so comfortable. I am so happy that I have a party, a strong party that is strong enough to defeat the other party.

“Let me also say that as an aspirant that I come here to brief you, tell you that God willing, very soon we will fix a date for declaration and I also want to take the opportunity to invite you to where we are going to have that declaration to support me and through me support the party.

“People are worried and very much concerned about the issue of primary elections. Let me tell you that our constitution has provided for consensus, it has also provided for elections.

“We know for those of us who came from PDP, we know the advantages and disadvantages of primary elections, but if you look at it critically from 1999 to 2011, every election year, PDP was having primary elections even when we had sitting president in 2003 and 2011, we had primary elections, but all other parties were not doing primary elections in the actual sense of it.

“They sit down and look at faces and say ‘you, do a guess work and say, ‘yes’ may be he is number one here but when you go to the field, he may not be number one.

“That is why I am personally calling for a consensus, but if it doesn’t happen, I believe primary election is also good for the party.

“We have seen that since we have quite a number of aspirants, all of us are working, everybody is working very hard especially those of us from PDP, we have a huge advantage, especially my humble self, we have been to so many places.

“We need leadership that will judge somebody by the content of his character , somebody who can ensure that everybody is given what he deserves to get.

“I hope all of us here and even those who are not here will team up together with us to defeat the PDP; PDP has already defeated itself.

“On the other hand, all what we need is to ensure that it doesn’t rise again.”

Kwankwaso, who also visited Senate President David Mark, told him that he came to pay him respect as the leader of the National Assembly.

He told Mark: “I am sure you are aware that I am one of the aspirants of the APC.  Of course, I am yet to declare.”
