LASEMA assures Apapa residents of quick response

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has assured residents of Apapa and its environs of its readiness to respond to any emergency situation in the area, following the gridlock arising from traffic congestion.

LASEMA General Manager Adesina Tiamiyu said yesterday at Alausa that the Agency is exploring various possibilities at ensuring quick and adequate response to any form of emergency in the area or any part of the state.

He said: “The Agency is looking into the possibility of setting up a temporary dispatch point for quick and adequate response to any case of emergency, while the Agency’s bikers have been dispatched for close monitoring and surveillance of the situation for necessary attention when required. The Agency is also looking at other avenues for periodic report in management of any situation in the area.”

He pledged that the government “is alive to its responsibilities in ensuring adequate safety of life and property” and would not allow any unfortunate incident to occur as a result of the bottleneck.

Tiamiyu also advised Lagosians especially residents of the area to “remain calm and endeavour to call the 112/767 for any form of emergency.”

  • LASEMA gets jet skis, patrol boats

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has taken delivery of two jet skis to ensure speedy response to accidents on the waterways.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who deployed the jet skis to LASEMA, promised to give the agency patrol boats.

LASEMA General Manager, Adesina Tiamiyu made these disclosures yesterday at a retreat for workers.

Tiamiyu also said that LASEMA units would be opened at Fadeyi and Badagry soon, adding that modalities had been set up for the establishment of a base for all the agency’s stakeholders at Epe.

Charging them to acquire swimming skills and overcome water phobia, he said they had no reason to fail, given the huge investments the governor had made in emergency management since 2015.

He said: “Setting up waterway emergency rescue is no tea party. A lot of planning has to go into it. We need the equipment and operators, who would go into the water to do the job. We need divers and they have specific gears they must wear, which are costly and not sourced locally.

“So, these are things we have been doing behind the scenes. I am happy to announce that LASEMA is now in possession of two jet skis to be deployed on accident spots on the waterways. A jet ski can carry two people at a time, the driver and a diver. So, whenever there is an accident at sea, we would use them to move divers quickly to the spot so that lives could be saved.

“We have made demands for boats and the governor has challenged us to go and bring a bill. He told us quite frankly that such casualties as recorded at Ilase Island last Sunday should not happen in Lagos again.

“We should be able to quickly respond when there is a boat accident. Though Lagos is bordered by water and the distance from one point to the other is far, we can try and ensure that help gets to any victim of boat accident irrespective of their location.”

According to Tiamiyu, LASEMA was aware of the growing population of Lagos as well as the government’s drive to build a resilient mega city, adding that the agency receives about 80,000 calls on its toll free 112 daily.

He said considerable progress had been made to take LASEMA nearer to the people, adding that plans were underway to create local emergency management committees across the Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

Tiamiyu said: “We are planning in the coming years to ensure that emergency response is taken to the nooks and crannies of Lagos. The first step towards that is to get the local governments involved, which we have started already.

“We are going to local governments to create local emergency management committees, who would be saddled with the responsibility of tackling emergency within the local government before we get there.

UPDATE: Lagos building collapse death toll increases

Two more bodies have been recovered from the collapsed three-storey building at Ilasamaja, Lagos, bringing the number of deaths recorded to three.

The deceased were recovered between 12:18am and 12:32am, said the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and Incident Commander of the operation, Adesina Tiamiyu.

According to him, three people died, 19 were rescued and some were still feared trapped.

Among the deceased was a 25-year-old Plumber, Emeka Okeke, from Enugu State, whose boss was inconsolable Thursday night.

The boss who gave his name as Okeke and identified himself as the deceased’s uncle, was held by rescue workers from jumping on the rubble.

Crying and speaking in Igbo, Okeke said he left his two brothers-Emeka and Chima- at the site Thursday afternoon before leaving for Festac.

He said they were both his brothers and were handed over to him by their parents so that he could teach them plumbing.

“What do I tell my people? These boys were given to me by my brothers to train. Where do I start from? God! Why me?

“They were working together. I left both of them here this afternoon and I went to Festac. We all slept here with other workers. I was just coming back to sleep now, so, we can continue our job tomorrow. I didn’t know something bad happened here. I didn’t even here about it until I got to the site.

“Death should have taken me instead. It should have taken me and left my two young boys, who are just starting life. I should have died in their place,” said Okeke who refused to admit that one of his brothers might still be alive.

“My people have been calling Emeka’s phone since. It’s ringing but he wasn’t picking. Look at the phone in his pocket. It’s there inside his pocket. God! What did I do wrong?” Lamented Okeke.

The Nation observed that paramedics, at the instruction of Tiamiyu, took him and checked his blood pressure, before they showed him a place to sit down. Okeke, who wanted to sleep at the scene until his other brother was found, was advised to follow an ambulance to Isolo General Hospital so that he would check if Chima was among the injured.

Most of the victims recovered from 9pm had at least one of their legs amputated, with suspected spinal cord injuries.

    LASEMA establishes marine unit

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has established a special marine emergency unit.

The agency, acting on the directive of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, has stationed local divers for quicker responses should anyone fall into the lagoon or attempt suicide.

“This unit would complement the activities of sister agencies, such as Marine Police Unit, State Waterways Authority (LASWA), State Ferry Services, among others.

“We have deployed people who can do immediate rescue on our waterways. And as a deliberate policy of government, we have decided to set up a unit that would be stationed permanently to provide help whenever there is an occurrence like that. That’s not to say we are encouraging people to jump into the lagoon.”

  • Orji: LASEMA urges fishermen, others to report floating body

The Lagos State Emergency and Management Agency (LASEMA) on Tuesday urged fishermen, business persons and other Nigerians that ply the Lagos waterways to immediately report any floating body to the Marine police.

The General Manager of LASEMA, Tiamiyu Adesina, made the call the in Lagos, as search for the body of a medical doctor, Allwell Orji, who jumped into the lagoon on Sunday, continues.

He said anyone with information about a body on the waterways could also call the Emergency Toll Free Number 767 or 112.

Adesina reiterated that a body which was earlier recovered from the lagoon by the State Marine Office of the Lagos State Police Command on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, was not that of Orji.

The LASEMA chief said, “A body was recovered today from the lagoon; the body was recovered by the state marine office of the Lagos State Police on Awolowo Road.

“About five members of his family were there with the driver; also, the Commissioner of Police, General Manager of Inland Waterways and other relevant agencies were there.

“The family members looked at the body and confirmed it was not the body of Dr. Orji; the clothes on the recovered corpse did not tally with what Orji wore on the day of the incident.

“The unidentified body was handed over to LASEMA officials and taken away by the State Environment Health Monitoring Unit (LASEHMU).”

According to Adesina, the search for Orji’s body continues and any other investigation that will lead to the identity of the recovered body will be handled by the police.

The incident, which occurred at about 3:00 a.m., was said to have been caused by power surge from one of the flats in the building.

“Preliminary investigation conducted at the scene of the incident revealed that a duplex which was converted to flats (five mini flats, a two bedroom flat and a four bedroom flat) was gutted by fire.
