Lawan congratulates Tinubu, Shettima over tribunal victory

Former Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, on Thursday, September 7, congratulated President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, on their victory at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC).

Lawan gave the commendation in a statement by his media adviser, Ezrel Tabiowo, in Abuja

He said the victory has restored the confidence of Nigerians in the nation’s electoral processes and the judiciary.

He also commended the PEPC for its impartial and unbiased posture in examining petitions brought before the panel by the candidates of opposition political parties, on the basis of available facts and merit.

He said: “I congratulate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima over their victory at the Presidential Election Petitions Court.

“The affirmation of their election in February this year restores the confidence of Nigerians in the nation’s Judiciary and our electoral processes.

“I also commend the panel for its resolute and firm posture in ensuring that its judgement was guided by the facts available before the court against unsubstantiated claims.

“The PEPC judgment sends a clear message to politicians that the judiciary understands its limit and refuses to be an arbiter on matters within the jurisdiction of political parties.

“In addition, the decision by candidates of some political parties to contest the outcome of the 2023 Presidential election, provided the opportunity to test the provisions of the Electoral Act passed by the 9th Assembly, in a way that further deepens our nation’s democratic processes.

“Efforts must, accordingly, be made by the 10th Assembly to consolidate on the gains of the Electoral Act by ensuring further amendments to the law, in a bid to strengthen the Independent National Electoral Commission and our electoral processes.

“I also urge the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party, to join forces with the Tinubu-led administration in delivering good governance to Nigerians.”

Palliatives: Lawan receives rousing welcome in Yobe

Thousands of constituents from Yobe North Senatorial District, on Friday, stormed the Wachakal airstrip to welcome former Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

Lawan, according to a statement by his media adviser, Ezrel Tabiowo, in Abuja, arrived Wachakal in Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State from Abuja ahead of his planned distribution of 9,000 bags of grains as palliative to his constituents across five LGAs.

The statement reads in part: “The former Senate President during his tenure between 2019 and 2023 facilitated the reconstruction of the airstrip.

“The approval for the revival of the Wachakal airstrip – one previously considered the hub for local and foreign missions within the North East region – was given by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration in August 2021.

Lawan, who is visiting Yobe North Senatorial District, is set to flag-off the distribution of palliatives to his constituents by his foundation – The Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan (SAIL) Empowerment Foundation, on Saturday.

“Lawan’s foundation is set to distribute 9,000 bags of grains to constituents in 60 wards across the five local government areas in Yobe North.

“The intervention is in support of efforts by the Yobe State government and the Federal government to ease the hardship faced by the people.”

  • Southwest APC urges Lawan, Gbajabiamila to perform

The Southwest All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed delight over the election of Dr. Ahmed Lawan as Senate President of the Ninth Senate, urging him to promote cordial relations between the Executive and Legislature.

The party also congratulated the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila,  and his deputy, Hon Wase, saying that Gbajabiamila presented a great hope for a leadership that will unleash his wealth of experience to build a responsible legislature.

In a statement by the South West Zonal Publicity Secretary, Karounwi Oladapo, the party also congratulated the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege.

It said the APC had found brilliant partners in Lawan and Omo-Agege  that share the progressive ideals of APC to move Nigeria forward, while Gbajabiamila’ s antecedents in the House of Representatives over the years raised a great hope for a new Nigeria that places emphasis on character and competence to lead a huge country like Nigeria with her complexities.

Oladapo said: “It is on record that for the first time in the nation’s political history, Gbajabiamila started as a member of the House of Representatives and later was the Minority Leader before he was elected Majority Leader in the Eighth Assembly only to now top it with the Speakership of the House.

“It is particularly noteworthy that throughout the electioneering for the exalted office, the refrain was Gbajabiamila’s competence, brilliance, leadership qualities and commitment to the vision and ideals capable of evolving development  programmes  to build a new nation.

“We also want to praise  his colleagues across party lines who believed that his vision should be a collective vision to take Nigeria to the Next Level.”

While also praising members of other political parties for lending support for Lawan and Gbajabiamila’s emergence as leaders in both chambers of the National Assembly, the party expected that as the National Assembly settles down to work, national spirit will guide members’ conduct to make a difference in Nigerians’ thirst for development.

  • The 9th NASS: between Lawan and Gbaja

SIR: Besides the coming inauguration of President Buhari for the second term in office the  other national event that is generating even keener interest, is the coming inauguration of the 9th National Assembly, where the new leadership of NASS are expected to emerge. Remarkably, Nigerians have woken up to the reality that, the legislative arm of government is as important as the executive arm, as both collaborate to ensure a greater and prosperous nation. Be that as it may, it’s instructive to note that the last four years (2015-2019) is totally different from the next four years (2019-2023) and so the considerations of the federal lawmakers must be different with respect to the caliber & personality that should be elected to drive the affairs of NASS in the next four years.

In the un-interrupted twenty years of Nigerian democratic dispensation, the last four years has been regrettably characterized with unending political litigations, unnecessary lengthy NASS recess, hi-tech budget padding, ‘control your executive & let me control my NASS legislative style’, political intrigues, acrimony, ego etc.

On account of these, the economy has experienced ‘all motion, no movement’At the receiving end of the myriads of challenges highlighted above, are Nigerians who have been traumatized, emasculated, famished and completely abandoned in perpetual state of hopelessness. The tragic tales of woes is across the nation. Quite a sizeable number of hitherto thriving manufacturing companies have relocated their business operations to profitable and more conducive operational axis within the West African and even, Sub Saharan African. Unemployment is at the highest point.

The 8th NASS contributed to no small extent to this morass.

Therefore, as Nigerians and the entire world await the inauguration of 9th NASS and its leadership, it’s an opportunity for the newly elected senators and House of Reps members to write and imprint their names in gold, by not only repositioning the NASS, but also restore the honor, integrity, excitement, brand image and color of the institution. They could only achieve this by electing leaders with requisite legislative and parliamentary credentials, as well as leaders with proven emotional stability, devoid of ego, acrimony, strife, selfishness, with capacity to drive the legislative business without rancor and prejudice.

Suffice to say that, it’s imperative for federal lawmakers to give utmost consideration to those leaders who would also be executive-friendly, without necessarily compromising the legislative independence.

Of all candidates on parade for the leadership positions, Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila seem good enough for this season.

Nigerians have witnessed in the last 8 years how Femi has seized the House of Reps chamber to launch himself into national prominence and consciousness with his sartorial, elegant and always sufficiently researched presentations. It is indeed confounding why he’s not been speaker before now! He has over the years displayed remarkable candor and appreciable knowledge of parliamentary procedures, norms and traditions. It’s also a plus for him that he’s been the majority leader of the house in the last four years, a responsibility that has not only sufficiently enhances his visibility, but has launch him into reckoning of Aso Villa, where he often leads APC caucus house members to attend meetings.

Distinguished Senator Ahmed Lawan too has been within the prescient of NASS in the last 16 years—-8 years in the House of Reps and 8 years in senate. Without doubt, this has afforded him rare opportunity to be conversant with legislative & parliamentary procedures, which would put him in good stead as a resourceful senate president. He has also been the majority leader of the senate , an office that has equally provided him platform to lead APC senate caucus, as well as giving him opportunity to cement a working and wonderful relationship with members of executive arm. Most importantly, Lawan has displayed remarkable maturity and courage, while driving through the directive of the party, and this he does most times in the atmosphere of intense provocation and gang-up of members of opposition. There is no doubt that the duo will provide wonderful, credible and exciting leadership for the chambers of the national assembly.

To re-launch and restore back Nigeria to prominence, economic growth & prosperity, as well as to ensuring that Nigeria populace truly benefit from governance, it’s important for federal lawmakers to be circumspect, de-emphasize unfounded rumor, do away with prejudice and heed the voice of reasons by electing Ahmed Lawan & Femi Gbajabiamila to lead the 9TH Senate and House of Reps respectively.

    • Kola AMZAT (FCA) Yaba, Lagos.
  • Lawan headache for National Assembly leaders

THE leadership of the current National Assembly may be sounding tough, but beneath their tough utterances are fear and trepidation over the fate that could befall them after May 29 when they would have vacated their seats.

Their main headache is Senator Ahmed Lawan, the Senate Majority Leader who has been adopted as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Muhammadu Buhari in the jostle for the seat of the Senate President in the 9th National Assembly.

The current leaders are indeed not looking into the future with confidence because they fear that Lawan would go after them at the promptings of the executive once he becomes the Senate President. One issue that is really troubling them is the loans they took to run their affairs. They are looking at the figures and already know that they face a Herculean task. You may wonder why they need such loans when they don’t embark on executive projects and all they spend money on are recurrent things.

Already, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has vowed to make the two chambers of the National Assembly account for funds allocated to constituency projects, and the figures are scary. Out of the 2,516 projects tracked between 2015 and 2017, 918 of them were not done, 395 are ongoing while 214 of the projects cannot even be located.

Read also: But why Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila?

A further breakdown reads as follows: 2015: 436 projects tracked in 16 states, 145 completed, 77 ongoing and 211 not executed at all; 2016: 852 projects in 20 states, 350 completed, 118 ongoing, 41 locations not specified in the budget and 343 not done; 2017: 1,228 projects tracked as at June 2018, 478 completed, 173 in unspecified locations, 200 ongoing, 13 abandoned and 364 not started.

Little wonder the leaders of the two chambers are in desperate need of a candidate that will cover their tracks, and from what Sentry is gathering in Abuja, many of them want that assurance from APC that Lawan as Senate president will not look into the books.

They are indeed reaching out to people they believe have influence on both the Villa and Lawan, promising that once they are assured of their own safety, both Lawan and Hon. Femi Gbajabiala will have their ways as Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively.

  • Buhari mobilises governors for Lawan, Gbajabiamila

President Muhammadu Buhari has mobilised the All Progressives Congress (APC) governors behind the party’s candidates for Senate president and House Speaker.

He has asked the governors to work for the emergence of Ahmad Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila as Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker in the Ninth National Assembly.

The governors are expected to meet with the National Assembly members-elect to smoothen the way for Lawan’s and Gbajabiamila’s election at the inauguration of the Senate and the House in June. They are to push for unity and consensus in the emergence of Lawan and Gbajabiamila.

In line with the President ‘s directive, APC governors in the Southwest will tomorrow meet with the House of Representatives members-elect in Abuja.

According to investigation by our correspondent, the President and the APC opted  for zonal consultations to ensure a rancour-free inauguration and to block the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from hijacking Assembly the leadership.

It was also learnt that the six geopolitical zones may use the opportunity to agree on the candidates for the offices allotted to them in the APC power sharing formula.

Under the formula, the Northeast is to produce the Senate President; Deputy Senate President (Southsouth); Senate Leader (Northcentral); Chief Whip (Southeast/ Southwest) and Deputy Chief Whip (Southwest / Southeast).

Besides the Speaker, the party is yet to release the details of zoning in the House because of challenges in some zones.

A top  source said: “The President and the APC leaders are not taking things for granted. All APC governors have been advised to take charge and unite National Assembly members-elect at the zonal level.

“We want senators-elect and House members-elect to come for the inauguration of the National Assembly ready to work for the interest of the party.

“Apart from resolving issues surrounding principal offices zoned to the six geopolitical zones, our Senators and members of the House would be in a position to assist the President in ensuring the election of Lawan and Gbajabiamila.

“The essence of the consultations by the governors is to keep APC intact, ensure party supremacy  and checkmate the opposition PDP which is desperate to infiltrate the ranks of the new Senators and House members.

“If we are able to overcome challenges at the zonal level on principal officers, we will be more focused for the battle for the Senate President and the Speaker.”

Responding to a question, the source said: “Out of the six zones, we have a major challenge in the Northwest, especially Kano where we have heavyweights (returnee House members) seeking juicy principal offices in the Lower Chamber.

“With the President coming from Katsina, our leaders in Kano State want to have all the offices zoned to the Northwest. This is why consensus is necessary at zonal level.”

On tomorrow’s Southwest governors, meeting with House members-elect in Abuja, another source added: “We want to speak with one voice unlike the situation in 2015 when Southwest lawmakers betrayed Gbajabiamila. The meeting, which will take place in Ekiti Governor’s Lodge will set the template for amicable sharing of offices likely to be zoned to the Southwest.”

At the weekend in Abuja, APC National Vice Chairman in the Northcentral Ahmed Suleiman Wambai explained why the President and the party settled for Lawan and Gbajabiamila for the Assembly leadership.

Justifying the party’s position, Wambai identified past experience, excellence and loyalty as ingredients that qualified Lawan and Gbajabiamila for the exalted offices.

Wambai said the President and other party leaders showed interests in the duo because of their loyalty and vast experience.

The party, he said,  supported the two to move the country forward.

He said: “We have not given Ahmed Lawan the position of Senate President because he is from Northeast or Gbajabiamila Speaker because he is from Southwest but based on the performance of the party, their contribution and loyalty.

“There was a time Mr. President sent budget to the National Assembly and that proposal was kept there for about seven months. This Gbabiamila and Lawan were the ones fighting and because of that, they received a lot of frustration, traumatisation and intimidation from the present leadership of the National Assembly.

“So, do you think the party and Mr. President should not reward those people? No. We said that despite the fact that the Northwest has the President, the Southwest has the vice president, the Senate President is zoned to the Northeast, Mr. President felt we should reward Femi Gbajabiamila based on the compelling loyalty and his experience.

“Mr. President prefers these people because of their past experiences. We are not saying that there is nobody in the Northcentral that is qualified. No. But the issue is that there are certain considerations. We fought for the zone to get deputy speaker in the House of Representatives and also Senate Majority Leader in the Senate.”

On whether the ruling APC put religion balancing into consideration, bearing in mind that both candidates are Muslims, he said: “You do not understand the political dynamism of our country. Do you think if we concentrate on religion this country will move forward? We go for excellence sometime, we go for those people who can key into the project of change and deliver.

“What do you mean by sensitivity? Between the APC and PDP which party is more sensitive?

“We should no longer say discriminate against anybody who has something to offer. The moment a nation starts thinking about where someone comes from or the religion he or she practices such a nation is doomed.”

Told that some Representatives of his members from Northcentral are scheming to take the position of speaker, Wambai said the Southwest should be allowed to produce the Speaker.

He said: “I share the assertion that things should be given to any region based on their contribution and acceptance of mantra.

“But in politics, you may not get what you sometimes think is yours because of certain pecuniary reason and expediency. But as far as I am concerned, the consideration should be given based on merit. Having produced the Senate President for the past 12 years, the Northcentral should allow other zones to produce the Speaker since we are not the only zone.

“Recall that in 2015, the post of Speaker and Senate President were zoned to the Southwest and the Northeast respectively. Ahmad Lawan from the Northeast and Femi Gbajabiamila from the Southwest were favoured but there was internal coup which truncated the process.”

  • 9th NASS: Buhari takes over lobby for Lawan, Gbajabiamila

How President met with Lalong, Wase
    • May meet Bago after London trip
    • El-Rufai opens talks with Ndume
    • Southeast APC demands review of zoning arrangements

President Muhammadu Buhari has personally taken charge of lobbying incoming members of the 9th National Assembly in the bid to install Dr. Ahmad Lawan as the next Senate President and Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The President, according to well placed sources, is taking nothing for granted this time around to avoid a repeat of the 2015 ‘coup’ when dissenting members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and their allies in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hijacked the election process and picked candidates other than those preferred by the ruling party.

The Nation gathered that shortly before leaving for London on a private visit last week, Buhari took the driver’s seat at meetings with some of the aspirants for the two plum offices.

He was said to have met Senator Danjuma Goje who enjoys the backing of the opposition PDP, and a member of the House, Ahmed Idris Wase, rated as enjoying wider backing from Reps.

One source said the President has already sent an emissary to Senator Ali Ndume who has consistently said that the President is yet to discuss with him on his ambition.

The source said the President plans to meet soon with Umaru Mohammed Bago, who has vowed not to step down for Gbajabiamila.

A top source who is familiar with the situation said: “Following complaints of imposition, the President has decided to reach out to the main aspirants to explain to them that he is actually the one who is interested in working with Lawan and Gbajabiamila.

“His determination to leave sustainable legacies has made him to be involved in opening talks with some aspirants.

“The President is reaching out because there is a lot of disinformation as if he is not personally involved in the demand for Lawan and Gbajabiamila.

“He is also worried that the election of principal officers is being personalized beyond the actors in the National Assembly.

“He met with Goje and begged him to support his choice of Lawan. Actually, the meeting with Goje was facilitated by Governor Nasir el-Rufai after preparatory discussion with the former governor of Gombe State.

“Goje admitted that he had some difficulty and would need to consult more before giving the President any feedback. A second session between the President and Goje is expected any moment from now.”

Investigation also revealed that the President has indirectly opened talks with a former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume on why he should allow Lawan to be the next President of the Senate.

It was learnt that Governor el-Rufai has already held discussion with Ndume preparatory to the aspirant’s meeting with Buhari.

“Apart from the APC governors, the President will have a follow-up meeting with Ndume. But his emissary (el-Rufai) has done preliminary consultations,” a Presidency source said.

It was similarly gathered that Buhari has met with one of the aspirants for the office of Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ahmed Idris Wase from Plateau State on the need for him to step down for Gbajabiamila.

Buhari met with Wase in company of  Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State. Wase is from the state.

A source privy to the session said: “The President persuaded Wase to concede the Speaker slot to Gbajabiamila in the light of his second term agenda.

“He told Wase that although as a ranking member, he is entitled to lead the chamber but he wants to work with Gbajabiamila while Wase can be part of the team of the new Speaker.

“It was a confidence building session facilitated by an APC governor. But Wase is yet to make any commitment.”

Group seeks open ballot system to pick Senate President, others

Meanwhile, a group called Advocates of Good Governance, has launched an initiative for the adoption of the Open Ballot System in election principal officers of the 9th National Assembly.

The group, in a letter to Senate President Bukola Saraki, said it was dismayed by   information coming from the National Assembly that the leadership of the 9th Assembly will be conducted via a secret ballot process.

The group said: “We write you this letter as a group of patriotic Nigerians and advocates of Good Governance keenly following political developments and events in our country.

  • ‘How Lawan can become Senate President’

Senator Margery, widow of former Senate President Chuba Okadigbo, spoke with reporters in Abuja on the plight of her late husband as number three citizen. She also spoke on the feeling of marginalisation by the Southeast and what President Muhammadu Buhari can do to succeed in his second term. Assistant Editor GBADE OGUNWALE was there.

If Dr. Chuba Okadigbo were to be around today, perhaps, he would have offered a word of advice to the three lawmakers vying for the position of Senate President in the Ninth Senate.

Okadigbo, whose tenure as President of the Forth Senate witnessed so much turbulence, got thrown under a moving bus by an adversary. Okadigbo became the President of the Senate against the wish and desire of the former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He stepped on the proverbial banana peel and the rest is history.

Okadigbo’s widow, Senator Margery who stood by her husband through the testy times, has been watching the contest for the President of the Ninth Senate from the sidelines. With the benefit of hindsight, she would rather urge the contestants to tread softly. The turf, she cautioned, is too slippery for anyone to believe they can skid to victory. Mrs. Okadigbo them advised them against anti-party activities just to meet an end. According to her, one may benefit personally from engaging in anti-party activities, but it will ultimately end up a Pyrrhic victory. Perhaps the leadership of the Present Senate can tell the story better.

Using Dr. Okadigbo as case study, she said both individuals and political parties, even a President, can be guilty of playing anti-party activities.

Her words: “The party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hounded him from day one. When we begin to talk about anti-party, it started with Chuba Okadigbo. Remember that the PDP as senators-elect, had all decided that they wanted Okadigbo as the Senate President.

“But, some people decided that Okadigbo as Senate President was not what they wanted, and on the floor of the Senate, there was anti-party. The PDP as a party hired the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and the APP All Peoples Party (APP) at the time and voted against their own candidate. That was why the then President Obasanjo went and solicited support from other parties, because PDP was in clear majority and the majority of PDP senators wanted Okadigbo.

The PDP at the time was a united party, but somebody started the anti-party. It did not start today. My husband was the first case. You can even add that when it came to inducements, we know when it started. So, some of these issues that we are talking about today, they have been in existence a long time ago”. Mrs. Okadigbo, however, is of the view that with their majority status, senators-elect of the All Progressives Congress (APC) can change the narrative.

She counsels: “If the senators-elect believe in the supremacy of the party they belong to, they should know that their first responsibility is to defend their party. And in defence of their party, they have to first understand that the APC is in the majority. I am not talking about any influences on the outside. I am talking about them as senators-elect. They should understand and I am sure they do know that they are in the majority. So, if they are in the majority, they should stay together as the party in majority and vote the person who will be their Senate President. They do not need to solicit the participation of any other party”.

In most cases,  personal interests and the quest to leverage on loyalty to a particular candidate in the long run, have always dictated how some senators-elect vote on the floor, with little regard for party discipline.

To Mrs. Okadigbo, without sanctions, the trend may continue to dominate politics in the legislature in a long time to come.

She said: “I just said that the first thing senators-elect should do is to respect the decision of the platform upon which they were elected. You know there have not been any sanctions for all these cross carpeting and what have you. Until we get sanctions, party discipline will never be in place. I just said that the APC, being the majority should understand that they are the majority, and they should work on the basis of party supremacy. And if out of the 109 senators, the APC, which has about 64, decides amongst themselves to elect a member, they will have the majority. They do not need to go looking for other parties to support them. They can still choose who they want by staying together”.

So far, three returnee senators, Ahmed Lawan (Yobe North), Ali Ndume (Borno South) and Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central) are in the race. However, the leadership of the APC has expressed a preference for Lawan, but Ndume and Goje have refused to back down. Even as the APC has maintained that its choice of Lawan is cast in hard granite, Okadigbo said the issue goes far beyond that.

Her recipe: “I am not even sure the party’s insistence on Lawan can work on its own. They are not dealing with children. I am saying that the APC senators-elect are in the majority. The 64 or so of them should have their shadow election. They should be mature about this thing. If they have three people that want to be Senate President, the 64 of them should have their shadow election and decide on whom it will be and whoever it is that they decide on, they should take it to the floor. At that point, they are the majority because they are coming with one voice”.

Mrs. Okadigo observes a disconnect between the Executive and the National Assembly, particularly the Senate in the present dispensation. She opined that the APC cannot afford a repeat of the acrimony that characterised the relationship between the two arms of government in the unfolding dispensation.

A few years after the death of her husband, Mrs Okadigbo represented Anambra North Senatorial District from 2011 to 2015 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The ex-lawmaker had joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) early 2018 and had re-contested the seat in the February 23, 2019 election. She lost the contest to the confusion and in-fighting among party chieftains in the district. She described the Anambra chapter of the APC as a house of confusion. For someone who played an active role in the PDP during the 2017 governorship election in Anambra State, her decision to join the APC came to many as a surprise.

Apparently in recognition of her contributions to the APC, the leadership of the party has appointed her into the APC committee for the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari coming up on May 29. What is her expectation after the inauguration, more so given the fact that her husband was Buhari’s running mate during the 2007 presidential election?

She replies: “I really do not think this is a fair question to ask. The reason is that President Buhari has been in power since 2015. In 2015, as I said, I was not around. I had issues that led to the loss of my son. So for me as a parent and as a single parent at that time, that was my priority.

Four years later, there is a new situation. The government is back in power. At this point, I ran an election on that platform. It is a family I know. In all these years, I have been in touch with them. I have had a relationship with them. Even when I lost my son, the First Lady sent quite a delegation to Ogbunike because this was happening at a time when she also had her son involved in an accident. So, there were two mothers in situations involving their children.

“However, government is unfolding and I am available. I am ready to serve in any capacity that I find myself. Right now, I am in the service of the inauguration committee, preparing for the inauguration. So, I do not know where it will head or where it will end up. But wherever it is, I am ready”.

Politically speaking, would the situation have been different if Dr Okadigbo were to be around?

She said: “When I went to the Senate, I always tell people that, if Dr Okadigbo woke up and you told him that I went to the Senate, he will tell you to leave him to continue his sleep because he would never have believed it. That is why I say that politically, I am a child of circumstance. I never had any godfather, and I did not wake up and say to myself that today I am going to be a politician. Although I have always been in a political home. My paternal uncle, the late Nwafor Orizu, was my grandmother’s younger brother. My grandmother is an Orizu. So, I have always been in a political family. Then I married into politics. When it comes to representing Anambra North, I am richly qualified. I was born in Anambra North and I married from Anambra North. I think everything depends on time and circumstance and when that time and circumstance are right, things will fall into place.”

Asked if Chuba Okadigbo would have joined the APC if he were to be alive today? “Yes, if my late husband was alive, he would have been in APC, that is what I can tell you from what I know of him. If I recall, he said that he may not be here, but Muhammadu Buhari will forge ahead. So, I have no doubt that Chuba would have been a member of APC. My husband was a politician; he learnt it, he taught it, he practiced it. There are no two ways about it. The man was a tactician. So, maybe, he would have been able to offer something. Even at a young age of thirty-something, when he was political adviser to Shehu Shagari, he had a lot to offer. So, I do not doubt for one moment that Chuba would have been APC”.

She felt no qualms joining the APC, despite complaints from her kinsmen in the South East, that the Igbo are being marginalisation by the Buhari administration. Does she see things differently?

She said: “I want to talk about a simple thing like the Zik Mausoleum. That Zik Mausoleum has been hanging for so many years. It took Buhari’s government to finish it. I was sitting as a Senator for Anambra North when we went for the ground breaking of the Second Niger Bridge in the year 2013 or 2014.

“But before Jonathan, there had been talks about Second Niger Bridge. But today, I can tell you that Second Niger Bridge is happening. Talking about roads, there are roads now being done. Remember, in the Senate on one of those occasions when we had the debate, I said that the Second Niger Bridge in particular was a campaign slogan for most politicians in the Southeast.

“The Southeast has not learnt that political arithmetic. We are yet to learn it. I stand exactly where Dr. Okadigbo stood in 2003, that one plus one does not necessarily give you two; that one plus one can give you zero. But that you can play one plus one and it will give you five. We are yet to understand that political arithmetic and we get it wrong all the time. Until we learn to do it, just like he said years ago, we will never get it right in the Southeast”.

  • Senate presidency: ‘Let Lawan be’

A group, the Citizens Consultative Assembly (CICON) has described as unnecessary, the opposition from some Nigerians to the endorsement of Dr.Ahmed Lawan by his party, All Progressives Congress (APC), as the next Senate President.

The group said in a statement by its executive director, Clarion Augustine, that the APC has done nothing wrong in endorsing  Lawan.

“The practice across the world is to have the political party with the controlling   majority to produce the Senate President or the Speaker of the Congress,” CICON said.

It added: “Election is done openly on the floor of the hallowed   chambers in the most transparent manner.

“We oppose the idea of secret ballot for the simple reason that legislators anywhere in the world represent specific constituencies, and, therefore, can’t on their own, take decisions as to who leads the National Assembly.

“In climes where representative democracy has taken firm roots, a lawmaker’s  relevance is measured by the decision they make on the floor of the hallowed  chamber.

“Even at that ,  the lawmaker  is duty bound to consult his constituents. Nigeria CAN’T therefore, be any different. We insist strongly that the impending election of the leadership of the Senate should not deviate from the global legislative practice of openly electing their leaders.

“It is against this background that we throw our support to the  APC as the party with the most Senators and Representatives to produce the leaders of both chambers.”

  • Southwest youths back Lawan, Gbajabiamila for National Assembly posts

SOUTH organisations from the six Southwest states have appealed to lawmakers-elect on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to respect and honour the party’s directive on the zoning of the National Assembly leadership posts.

The organisations, under the aegis of the Congress of Southwest Youths (COSWY), said they deemed it fit to express their position on the emergence of new leaders for the 9th National Assembly as peace-loving members of the society, who would not want the Federal Government of the day distracted.

Addressing a joint news conference on Wednesday in Ibadan, the Convener, Congress of Southwest Youths, Mr. Ahmed Shomoye, declared support for the party’s leadership choices -Senator Ahmed Lawan as the Senate President and Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker of the House of Representatives for the coming Ninth Assembly.

Some of the groups in the coalition include Asiwaju Grassroots Foundation, Yoruba Council of Youths Worldwide, All Progress Youth Forum, National Youth Council of Nigeria and Project Loud among others.

The groups also urged the APC federal lawmakers to work together as a formidable caucus of progressive people and should not allow desperate lawmakers from other parties to break their ranks.

They also urged other interested APC lawmakers in the positions to drop their ambition and support the party’s choices.

Shomoye said: “As the tenure of the 8th Assembly is almost coming to an end and the newly elected federal lawmakers are getting prepared for their inauguration as the 9th Assembly in June, this is the most auspicious time for all critical stakeholders of democratic rule in Nigeria to join forces together and ensure that the shenanigans, which transpired in the 8th Assembly do not, in any way, repeat themselves again.

“Bringing back the National Assembly to the right side of history would require its next leadership to, as a matter of necessity, comprise of noble men and women, whose strength of character, a wealth of legislative experience, zeal for patriotism and commitment to national progress and unity is not in doubt.

“The APC lawmakers should ensure the emergence of Senator Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila as the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively in the 9th Assembly in line with the informed preference of President Muhammadu Buhari and the decision of the APC national leadership.”
