  • LG unveils HomeChat tech

Korea electronics giant, LG Electronics, has said the launch of its HomeChat interface will help bring great expectations into a simpler focus, adding that the tech allows users to give commands to their machines through their smartphones.

In a statement, the firm said the tech also unlocks the ability to hold two-way conversations with appliances by using the popular LINE messaging applications (app) to receive recommendations and feedback from devices as per their current status. The premise of home appliances have remained virtually unchanged since entering everyday lives decades ago: Make the home simpler.

Previously this has seen a boom in the size, shape and overall selection of hardware items which are geared at easing convenience and saving time across a host of household tasks. With pick-up-and-go appliances now ubiquitous, the latest innovation battleground has been to give these items a brain. The resulting trend of the ‘Internet of Things’ is to ‘digitally empower’ previously inanimate products such as fridges, ovens and dishwashers with the ability to be smart and interact with their owners.

“The smart TV is one of the last devices that even tech-savvy consumers have trouble fully exploiting.  While there are many Smart TVs on the market, LG’s built in webOS is designed to streamline the process and bring the full power of the Smart TV to the consumer.  LG’s webOS allows for users to search the internet or their own personal media library to find exactly what they want to watch,” the firm said.

The simplicity of webOS puts viewers firmly in control of their television screen. Enter webOS, LG’s newest Smart TV platform. that has been used to offer users an intuitive interface for an experience that is both seamless and refreshingly uncomplicated. In optimising the webOs system for LG Smart TV, many industry watchers have lauded the emergence of an interface which finally marries the superior picture quality of the latest generation of TV’s with an operating system that allows truly smart navigation around and connectivity with a rich ecosystem of online content.

The ability of LG’s appliances to read and implement commands via text message marks a core simplification of human-machine interaction. HomeChat uses natural language, not buttons or commands that require memorising, making the learning curve extremely short for users. HomeChat employs Natural Language Processing (NLP) and LINE, the popular mobile messenger app with over 300 million users, to let homeowners communicate, control, monitor and share content with LG’s latest smart appliances.

Introducing a whole new level of convenience, the company’s premium smart appliance lineup includes a camera-equipped refrigerator, a washing machine that allows users to start and download washing cycles remotely via HomeChat and a Lightwave oven that supports NFC and WiFi for convenient control from any location.

  • Wearable devices, not durable, says LG

The concept behind weara-bles is rooted in simplicity. The fact that you can just “wear it” and not have to worry about dropping or losing the device – not to mention having it stolen – is simplifying it itself. Therefore, “Wear it and forget it” is the ultimate goal of wearable device designers but today’s devices still require maintenance, home electronics manufacturer, LG has said.

The firm explained that the movement to make home appliances “smart” however, has not been without its challenges, adding that the goal of making man-machine interactions both seamless and efficient has proved trickier for many leading manufacturers than anticipated.

In a statement, the firm explained that one product that does help bring great expectations into a simpler focus however is LG’s HomeChat interface which allows users to give commands to their machines via their smartphones, HomeChat also unlocks the ability to hold two-way conversations with appliances by using the popular LINE messaging app to receive recommendations and feedback from devices as per their current status. • LG showcases OLED Tvs in Nigeria

KOREA electronics giant, LG Electronics, has unveiled the latest technology in television viewing in the country.

Branded world’s first curved organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TV, the firm said it is a product of research and development (R&D), adding that the model no. 55EA9800/55EA9700. The advanced TV is equipped with incredible picture quality, stunning design and innovative technologies.

General Manager, Home Entertainment Division, LG Electronics West Africa Operations, Mr. Steve Ryu, said: “The next-generation display technology and the advanced ultra-thin depth of 4.3mm comes with a unique curved design which represents a new era in home entertainment. It must be seen to be believed for we are fully committed to bringing next generation technologies to the Nigerian market.”

Featuring a gently curved screen and LG’s own WRGB OLED technology, the CURVED OLED TV offers exceptional picture quality and an immersive viewing experience. The cutting-edge TV has been awarded the prestigious Red Dot: Best of the Best honor and is recognised by respected international product testing and certification bodies TÜV Rheinland, Intertek and VDE.

Speaking further, Ryu said: “Our groundbreaking CURVED OLED TV marks the beginning of a whole new era in home entertainment. Its IMAX-like curvature guarantees an amazingly immersive and comfortable viewing experience. Indeed, it is a point of pride that we were able to bring the world’s first curved OLED TV into the Nigerian market and we will continue to expand and improve our industry leading television technology.

“This is indeed a watershed moment in TV history because the Curved OLED TV technology will make it possible for consumers to enjoy crystal clear picture quality devoid of distortions,” added Ryu

Recalling the evolution of television, the firm said it started with the cathode ray tube (CRT), otherwise known as the picture tube which pioneered the development of electronic television systems. CRT’s are a vacuum tube, containing electro guns and a fluorescent screen used in viewing images. They were however superseded by the liquid-crystal-display televisions (LCD TV) and light emitting diode (LED) TV’s which are thinner, lighter and have lower manufacturing costs.

After this came the world’s first 84″ ULTRA-HD TV, which equals four units of 42-inch TVs and delivers an unparalleled picture resolution of 2160p which is four times higher than full HD.

ULTRA-HD TV uses resolution upscaler hardware which delivers higher detail from the existing SD/HD external sources. The TV’s Triple XD Engine comes with a TruMotion of 240 Hz with the benefit of fast screen refresh rate which guarantees quality viewing of fast movies and sports.

  • LG delights shoppers with 21st century TVs

The 21st century’s TV innovation landscape represents one of the most dynamic times for picture quality given the emergence of new cutting edge technologies able to render imagery as never before, LG Electronics has said.

According to the household electronics manufacturer, the future of TV market/industry is driven by three key technologies at the moment the light emitting diode (LED) and liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs. These use light-emitting diodes to light up the LCD screen and offer the widest array of price points, sizes and features. LCD TVs still exhibit imperfections when displaying rapid motion, as in sports and because of the nature of the technology, the color black is represented by dark grey.

The firm, in a statement said, said in a bid to encourage quality viewership, iconic consumer technology trade highlights that while the high definition (HD)TV market landscape is undergoing more changes than ever, it will take some time to see which technologies and market strategies that eventually stick.

General Manager, Home Entertainment Division, LG Electronics West Africa Operations, Mr. Steve Ryu, said: “Both Ultra HD, organic light emitting diode (OLED) and the effect of new game-changers such as intuitive OS and curved screens will all have their part to play besides higher resolution, panel technology is seeing some changes to make them look brighter, sharper, more immersive, these technologies are not mutually exclusive and in most cases exist side-by-side. We are fully committed to bringing next generation technologies to the market.

“The next-generation display technology and the advanced ultra-thin depth of 4.3mm come with a unique curved design which represents a new era in home entertainment. It must be seen to be believed.”

He explained that rather than using a new or different display technology, Ultra HDTVs are LED LCD models that “cram” more pixels onto the screen. With more pixels in a given area, images are sharper and more- detailed than on regular HD TVs. Also known as 4K TVs, consumer Ultra HD sets have four times the resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) of traditional HD TVs (1920 x 1080 pixels).

Ultra HD TV is on the rise and coming to consumer homes in a meaningful way with various high-profile launches from leading manufacturers which also demonstrates how we are witnessing the second or third generation of 4k screens from some companies and while they still generally command a premium and affordable.

However, OLED still remains the aficionado’s favourite and is widely regarded as the one technology able to offer superior quality on an unrivalled scale. One only needs to see a significant trademark demonstration of OLED technology to prepare for the imminent growth in demand for OLED TVs around the world, LG recently announced that it will establish production bases in a number of countries around the world.

The company has completed the construction of new OLED TV plants in Brazil, Poland, China and Thailand with a facility in Mexico commencing operation this year producing OLED TVs for the North American Market.

Skeptics have long bemoaned the absence of a truly intuitive OS when it comes to smart TVs.

Managing Director, Fouani Nigeria Limited, Mr. Mohammed Fouani said: “Our groundbreaking CURVED OLED TV marks the beginning of a whole new era in home entertainment. Its IMAX-like curvature guarantees an amazingly immersive and comfortable viewing experience. Indeed, it is a point of pride that we were able to bring the CURVED OLED TV into the market and we will continue to expand and improve our industry leading television technology.”

Without proper connection to the internet and the ability to navigate efficiently, many say, a “smart” TV is no different than the average, no-frills “dumb” TV. At CES 2014, LG demonstrated that it clearly understands the need for a simpler and smarter TV set up and interface — and that simplicity is crucial in getting consumers to connect and enjoy the full benefits of this new class of television.

WebOS is the newest smart TV platform from LG.Having purchased this dynamic operating system from HP in march 2013,the platform has been re-invented by LG and reintroduced to offer users an intuitive interface for an experience that is both seamless and refreshingly uncomplicated, based on years of experience collected by the WebOS team. This platform marries the superior picture quality of the latest generation of TV’s with an operating system that allows truly smart navigation around and connectivity with a rich ecosystem of online content.

At CES 2014, LG managed to achieve a unique grand slam with the introduction of its flexible OLED TV having previously introduced its share of world firsts in the OLED TV space-flat, curved and now flexible. Using an accompanying remote, the curvature of the flexible OLED TV display can be altered to suit the viewing situation and environment, such as number of viewers and viewing distance. Since the curvature is adjustable, audiences can enjoy the best TV viewing experience possible.

Interestingly, the announcement represents the latest development in the exciting evolution of curved screens and LG’s overall vision to create unmatched picture quality. Along with flexible OLED,LG has also brought together what could be termed the ‘holy grail’ of emerging TV technology, combining the qualities of both Ultra HD and OLED as well as curved for their stunning 55-,65- and 77-inch Ultra HD Curved OLED TV range.

LG empowerment scheme lifts persons with disability

In its quest to provide the good life for the less privileged in the society, LG Electronics, has initiated an empowerment programme which has so far benefited persons with disability, including 15 deaf and dumb persons who have been offered employment at the company’s facility in Apapa axis of Lagos.

The LG empowerment initiative was put together in response to the large-scale call for the engagement of people with disabilities, as public institutions as well as corporate organisations, in recent times, have been urged not to discriminate against persons with disabilities either in terms of employment or access to public buildings.

Speaking on the initiative, General Manager, LG Electronics West Africa Operations, Mr. Deog Jun Kim said: “over the years, society has relegated to the background the physically challenged; they are most times regarded as second class citizens. This is why we have taken it upon ourselves at LG to give this people a new lease of life and thereby contribute to the development of the communities we do business in.”

Echoing similar sentiments, the Managing Director, Fouani Nigeria Limited, Mr. Mohammed Fouani said: “LG Electronics is committed to support the reintegration of disabled persons into the workforce and society. In recent times we have offered employment opportunities to them.

“The LG Electronics Empowerment initiative is a pragmatic approach towards the betterment of the lives of the citizenry irrespective of their status.

“In Nigeria, the community of persons with disability is growing at a geometric rate. Going by the fact that these groups of people are often viewed from the prism of invalids and dependants, they have been increasingly marginalised and vulnerable,” he stressed.

Reacting to the gesture, Mrs. Egegbara, a relative of one of the beneficiaries said: “I have never at any time viewed my son as a person with disability; He has always been outstanding in all he does. So, when I heard that a company of this magnitude offered my son employment giving him an opportunity to showcase his skills and talents despite his limitations.

“At the first instance, I did not believe it because I am yet to hear of a major company like this going all out to put smiles on the faces of people with disability, giving them the avenue to improve themselves and be useful to themselves and the society at large. I want to say a big thank you to LG for putting together this initiative.”

LG Electronics through this initiative, the management stressed, has demonstrated that corporate organisations can be more responsive and join hands with government in the quest to actively engage and empower the physically challenged, giving them a voice in the society so that they can contribute their quota to nation-building.

  • LG Nexus 4 testimony

“Before buying the Nexus 4, I needed a good phone. But to me it is an investment. I don’t believe in buying a phone every now and then for the fun of it. It is better than nearly every phone in the market. It is a superior handset In more ways than one. This is a real Nexus.

”I have been using the LG Nexus 4 for close to two months now- it is super. Regarding capacity, I was concerned about it before buying, but now I see I don’t need much. All movies and audio I can get through DLNA from my external drives, with Windows Media Player and ArkMC installed on Nexus 4. Overall, the device is very convenient.

“From my observation, the LG Nexus 4 is also very popular with the younger generation; the phone is more like a status symbol for them. It comes complete with specifications and applications to brag about. When compared to other phones in its league, the Nexus 4 has better resolution, faster processor, newer operating system as well as an ergonomic body. “

That was how Rosemary Osunde a 35 year old woman detailed her thoughts and experience after two months of using the Nexus 4 phone recently introduced by LG Mobile. The computer analyst could not help but say more about the mobile device and all the amazing impact it is having on her performance and productivity level at work and at home.

“This new smartphone from LG comes complete with my favorite Google Apps, an amasing Photo Sphere camera, cutting edge hardware, and access to my favorite entertainment on Google Play – Nexus 4 puts the best of Google in the palm of my hand,” she added.

For Mr Ebere Bieni, a business executive who resides in Lagos, the LG Nexus 4 phone has empowered him in a great amount of ways so much that he depends on his phone to carry out most of his office tasks, as he can easily access files and documents on his phone even when he is not at his work desk. His old phone which also happened to be a Smartphone was grossly ineffective and inept which made him seek to get a new Smartphone that can perform on many levels. When he heard of the new LG Nexus 4 smartphone, he decided to give it a try. And ever since he purchased the LG Nexus 4, he found that he has become more productive and successful at what he does.

His words: “Prior to acquiring the LG Nexus 4 Phone, the smartphone I was using was underwhelming and boring; it had Wi-Fi connectivity issues which made connecting to the internet extremely difficult. The screen was also too small which made deciphering and reading from the phone a herculean task; the battery was also an outstanding issue because it does not last long enough; as a result I had to charge it again and again. Microphone malfunction was another low point of the device.

My wife had requested that I get a new Smartphone, but I declined due to my experiences with most of the smartphones that were available in the market because in my assessment those phones’ ‘highlights’ are mere enhancements of old features or just plain gimmicks.

“Out of annoyance and frustration, I returned to using a feature phone that I have long neglected, but discovered my performance level at work was dropping as I was unable to access my mails as well as social media. All that continued till a friend intimated me on the amazing capabilities of the LG Nexus 4 smartphone. I was a bit apprehensive, but decided to give it a try. But having used it for two months now, I am hooked.

“In terms of price, this phone is simply amazing; I am impressed with Nexus 4’s affordable price and impressive specifications; it is precisely priced to niggle away at the overpriced market; with a flagship phone that leads the way in both hardware and software it is indeed a breath of fresh air to an overpriced consumer market.

“I will also like to point out that it has got the latest processor, amazing performance, 2GB of RAM and internal memory of 16GB. The nexus 4 also works great for games as well as TV. The fast processor makes for buttery smooth running. On the whole, I am highly impressed with what this mobile phone can do.”

The LG Nexus 4 E960 phone was introduced into the Nigerian market in mid-February and it has been enjoying rave reviews with many users finding it to be a refreshing new way to interface with a smartphone.

With the Nexus 4, navigation is a breeze, as users are able to get to the places they care about quickly and easily with Google Maps. With turn-by-turn GPS navigation, live traffic info, and integrated driving, walking and public transit directions, getting from one place to the other has never been easier.

Users can search for nearby restaurants, businesses and more; recommendations from people in their circles and from experts, as well as full place reviews and summaries from Zagat editors are also easily accessible.

3D Maps and rich satellite imagery is another massive feature on this phone as it gives one a more realistic sense of what’s around while features like Street View and Indoor Maps make sure you always know what’s in front of you.

Weighing a mere 139g, the LG Nexus 4  also known as the E960  comes with exciting features such as the Android Jelly Bean Operating System (OS), an 8 Mega Pixel camera, 16 GB internal Memory capacity, 2GB of RAM as well as a 2,100 mAh Li-polymer battery.

The mobile device in a massive way solidifies LG’s position as a brand to be reckoned with in the global smartphone market. Since its introduction it has been highly rated by phone pundits.

LG Nexus 4 is a powerful unlocked Smartphone with a beautiful minimalist design and fast performance. It wins on internal performance and user experience. The Korean giant, LG Electronics strategically designed and manufactured the E960 in partnership with Google. The introduction of this high-end phone is informed by the company’s quest to achieve its primal objective of meeting the needs of its esteemed consumers.
