  • Liverpool wants to sign Ndidi

L iverpool wants to sign Leicester City workaholic midfielder Wilfred Ndidi in the summer to replace departing Emre Can at Anfield.

The 21-year-old Nigeria international is linked to Merseyside with the German midfielder set to move away from the Reds at the end of his contract, however, Jurgen Klopp is said to be assessing a number of potential replacements for Can.

Ndidi has become one of the key figures since he joined the former Premier League Champions Leicester from Belguim outfit Genk in January 2017.

However, Guinean journalist Alpha Balde said Liverpool have already approached Super Eagles star over a possible switch in the summer, adding that the midfielder has already agreed but Leicester are likely to demand a big fee for a player who has impressed in his first 14 months at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester boss Claude Puel has previously said that he has ‘no issues’ with Ndidi being linked to a bigger club in England’s top flight.

Former Genk star has featured 29 times in all competition for the Foxes this season scoring four goals in the process.

  • UEFA draw: Juventus to face Real Madrid, as Liverpool draw Man City

Juventus were given a chance to avenge last year’s UEFA Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid when they were drawn together for the quarter-finals of this year’s competition on Friday.
The Serie A side, beaten 4-1 in Cardiff last season by Real, will host the first leg in Turin following the draw at UEFA headquarters in Nyon.
The last eight also produced an all-English pairing as Liverpool was thrown together with English Premier League leaders Manchester City.
In the other ties, FC Barcelona will face AS Roma, bringing back unhappy memories for the Italian side that lost 6-1 on their last visit to Camp Nou.
Sevilla will take on Bayern Munich.
Juventus are not completely ruled out of the tie, as the Turin side came out on top when they last met over two legs in the semi-finals in 2015.
Overall, the teams have faced each other 19 times with eight wins for Juventus, nine for Real — including the 1998 final — and two draws.
Liverpool’s tie against Manchester City will be the first meeting between English sides in the quarter-finals since 2010/2011 when Chelsea faced Manchester United.
Manchester City have won only one of their last eight meetings with Liverpool in all competitions, if you exclude their penalty shootout triumph in the 2016 English League Cup final.

Former Roma stalwart, Francesco Totti, said his former team, who are considered the outsiders alongside Sevilla, should not be worried about facing FC Barcelona.
“Football is beautiful because anything can happen, especially in these types of games.
“We’ve already come a long way, finishing ahead of Chelsea and Atletico Madrid in the group stage and knocking out Shakhtar Donetsk,” he said.
Bayern, the runaway Bundesliga leaders, promised they would not underestimate Sevilla.
“Sevilla are not an easy team. They eliminated Manchester United,” said Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.
“It certainly is no easy draw, they did not come through to this stage by accident,” added midfielder David Alaba.
The first legs will be played on April 3 and April 4, with the return matches one week later.

  • Arsenal’s Wenger understands Mertesacker’s wish to retire

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he understands club skipper Per Mertesacker’s desire to stop playing next season because of the mental and physical toll the game has taken on the German.

The World Cup-winning defender said in an interview with German publication Der Spiegel that his “body was finished” and that he would rather sit on the bench or in the stands.

Mertesacker has made only 11 appearances for Arsenal this season.

Arsenal had already announced the 33-year-old would take up a role with the Premier League club’s academy next season.

Wenger was asked about Mertesacker’s comments at a news conference on the eve of Thursday’s Europa League last 16 clash at home to AC Milan which they lead 2-0 from the first leg.

“The quotes weren’t a surprise for me,” Wenger said.

“To be a pro footballer is high expectations. They are very demanding of themselves and that creates stress.

“There is huge expectation from the environment they are in and that creates stress. To play at the level they play you need a huge resistance to stress. You are depending on your body.”

Wenger described Mertesacker, who he signed from Werder Bremen in 2011, as the model professional and said he could change his mind about playing again.

“I think once you stop for a few months you are ready to play again,” Wenger said. “Of course, he’s had a very long career and he puts pressure (on himself) in every single training (session).

“He never plays one minute without being totally focussed and that demands a huge amount of effort which is why he made the career he has made.”

Wenger’s side have had an upturn in form after a four-match losing sequence in all competitions, beating Milan away followed by a 3-0 Premier League win at home to Watford.

However, they are 12 points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool so their most realistic hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League is by winning the Europa League.

Midfielder Aaron Ramsey said finishing off Milan would not be easy but the Europa League was a ‘massive opportunity’.

“We saw how good they are and we can’t take our foot off the gas,” the Welshman said. “We’ll treat it as 0-0 and go out to try and win the game, that’s the right mentality.

“It’s a massive opportunity for us. This game is very important for us and our season.”

  • ‘Southampton’s initial refusal to sell Van Dijk cost Pellegrino his job’

Southampton’s refusal to sell defender Virgil van Dijk in the close season disrupted their English Premier League campaign, former club captain Matt Le Tissier has said.
The forer England player said the refusal had ultimately led to manager Mauricio Pellegrino being sacked.
Southampton dismissed Pellegrino on Monday after just one victory in 17 league games under the manager.
Saturday’s 3-0 defeat by Newcastle United had left them a place and a point above the relegation zone and sealed the Argentine’s fate.
Le Tissier suggested that the turmoil surrounding Dutchman Van Dijk’s future amid interest from Liverpool and Manchester City had affected the team’s performances early in the season.
Van Dijk eventually moved to Liverpool in January for 75 million pounds ($104.24 million).
“I think that was probably something that, looking back with hindsight, the club would probably regret, trying to keep him in the summer,” said Le Tissier, who scored 209 goals for Southampton during his 16 years at the club.

“They tried to do the right thing by the fans, in terms of not selling their best player every season, but sadly that did appear to backfire. That situation probably didn’t help the performances in the first half of the season.”
Southampton has lost a large number of players to their domestic rivals in the past few years.
Club chairman Ralph Krueger said earlier in the season that they were keen to end the perception that they were a selling club.
“That’s life, that’s football, those decisions were made with the best intentions and it didn’t turn out right,” Le Tissier said.
“It’s now time to move on, appoint a new manager, and get out of the trouble we are in at the moment.”
Welshman Mark Hughes was firming as the bookmakers’ favourite to replace Mauricio Pellegrino as the south coast club’s manager.

  • Salah equals Suarez’s Liverpool record

    Salah equals Suarez’s Liverpool record

Mohamed Salah’s stunning debut season with Liverpool got even better on Saturday after he equaled Luis Suarez’s goalscoring record with his 31st strike of the season.

By scoring against West Ham at Anfield, he now has an identical record to that exceptional final season from Suarez in

    2013-14 — 37 games, 31 goals.

The 25-year-old has reached that level quicker than Suarez because Salah’s Liverpool are competing on more fronts, including a tilt at the Champions League.

The in-form winger also broke another record against the London club.  It’s now 20 goals with his left foot in the Premier League, breaking Robbie Fowler’s best of 19 in 1994-95.

He has benefited from being available from the off for Liverpool. Suarez’s final campaign was hindered by an initial ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic. He missed the first five league games.

This season, Salah scored three in Liverpool’s opening five Premier League games to settle into his new club.

The Reds may not be challenging for the Premier League this campaign but they are on course for a place in next season’s Champions League.

And they could still win Europe’s elite club competition this season. They carry a five goal advantage into their second leg against Porto.

And, after enjoying a stellar season so far, he has further enhanced his growing reputation at Anfield by scoring his 31st goal this campaign interestingly coming in the same year when he emerged as both BBC and African footballer of the year, an indication that the Egyptian international who will be leading the Pharaohs to the World cup in Russia remains a serious contender in the league of record breakers.

  • Valentine: Football enthusiasts ditch spouses to watch UCL matches

Valentine: Football enthusiasts ditch spouses to watch UCL matches

Some football enthusiasts in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) found it difficult to keep their dates for Valentine due to their passion for UEFA Champions League matches fixed on the same day.

The football enthusiasts either cancelled the appointments they earlier fixed or postponed such appointments to enable them to have undivided attention to the matches.

The Champions League featured important matches among prominent clubs, with matches between Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain (PSG), Liverpool and FC Porto, which were played on the same day.

The matches began at 8:45 p.m, at about the same hour when most of the Valentine parties and dinners were fixed.

Viewing centres across the city were filled to capacity, with the usual enthusiasm that accompanied football matches.

Embittered women, who spoke to our reporter, said that they felt bad losing their lovers momentarily to the fixed matches, adding that their men’s show of preference was not funny to them at all.

Some of the affected ladies said the match fixtures were hitherto unknown to them because they did not have the same passion for football like their men.

They expressed surprise when their spouses called to reschedule dates, citing the match fixtures as their reason.

Miss Joy Chukwuka, a student, whose spouse informed her about the match at the last minute, told our reporter that she cancelled the entire date instead of postponing it as he had suggested.

“We fixed the time together and he agreed, we had already earmarked places to visit and no time did he mention that he had a match to watch.

“Even if the match is important, he should have thought of the fact that Valentine isn’t done every day. He should have respected my company and watch the replay.

“I was so angry yesterday (Valentine’s Day) and it dashed all the high hopes I had. I got home to see that my roommate also suffered the same ridicule,” Chukwuka said.

However, some of the football enthusiasts said that the stakes for the matches were too high for them to ignore, especially those who had gone into betting as gamblers.

They argued that the women were supposed to understand the importance of the matches, saying that even if they had kept the dates, their attention would have been divided.

But, other men who kept their dates revealed that they had to spend more than half of the time checking live scores online, as some of them have had some bets on certain clubs.

Mr Julius Tyem, an engineer, said he could not miss the match for anything, even Valentine.

He said he killed two birds that night by watching the match and going on his date after, although the match ended at about 10 p.m.

“My girl-friend understood, we just had to find an outing that suited the time schedule; these teams are big teams and no football fan wants to be told what happened.

“There is a big difference between watching a live match and watching a replay. It is not the same at all.

“Some people had even placed bets and they needed to guide that ‘investment’ first before anything. Football is emotional too, just like Valentine,” Tyem added.

Mr Osahon Osarobo, an ICT entrepreneur, did not watch the match; he explained that his partner did not agree to a rescheduling. However, he followed the game online.

“My date was not smooth and I was trying to avoid that but she did not give me the chance. I kept on checking my phone for the most part and it disrupted the whole flow.

“I am a strong football fan, just like most other men. Taking us away from game is like taking away air,” Osarobo said.

The night did not end too well as most men who had placed their bets and lost the stakes went home angry, instead of going on their dates.

Miss Susan Asuquo, a banker, said her partner did not even honour the rescheduling which got her frustrated although she later got his reason.

“I heard his team PSG lost to Real Madrid, he placed bets that morning and even bragged that he would get me a befitting gift with the money for Valentine.

“I am sure he felt really disappointed and bitter. That was why he behaved like that,” Asuquo added.

EPL preview: Arsenal new boys face early derby baptism of fire

New Arsenal signings Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan will get an early taste of the north London derby atmosphere when they face Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Saturday.

The pair enjoyed comfortable home debuts in last weekend’s 5-1 rout of Everton.

But their local rivals are sure to provide tougher opposition as the two teams continue their bids for UEFA Champions League qualification.

Spurs are fifth in the table, four points ahead of sixth-placed Arsenal, one behind fourth-placed Chelsea and two adrift of third-placed Liverpool with 12 games left.

Arsenal outplayed Tottenham in a 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture.

But Spurs have reasons to be confident, having beaten second-placed Manchester United and drawn 2-2 at Liverpool in their last two games.

Liverpool travel to St Mary’s on Sunday to face a Southampton side who ended a 12-match winless run in the league.

The Saints climbed two points clear of the relegation zone with a 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion in their last match.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will welcome bottom club West Brom to Stamford Bridge on Monday on the back of losing 3-0 at home to Bournemouth and 4-1 away to Watford.

  • Klopp furious as late Kane penalty kick denies Liverpool

Klopp furious as late Kane penalty kick denies Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp launched a scathing attack on referee Jon Moss and his officials after Harry Kane’s controversial last-gasp penalty kick gave Tottenham a dramatic 2-2 draw on Sunday.

Reds boss Klopp was furious that his side’s chances of a vital victory over their top-four rivals were wiped out in an incident-packed finale at Anfield.

After Victor Wanyama equalised for Tottenham with 10 minutes left to cancel out Mohamed Salah’s early opener, Moss and his linesmen took centre stage.

First, Tottenham were awarded a penalty kick for Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius’s foul on Kane, even though Klopp felt the England star was offside.

Kane’s spot-kick was saved by Karius and when Salah put Liverpool ahead in stoppage-time, Klopp must have felt justice was done.

But in the final seconds, Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk nudged over Erik Lamela and Moss gave another penalty kick, with Kane this time converting from the spot.

Klopp confronted Moss on the pitch at fulltime and still had not calmed down when he spoke to the media.

“I am not allowed to go in their room until half an hour after. It was clear offside, unbelievable, I don’t know what they were discussing,” Klopp said of the first penalty kick.

Speaking about the second spot-kick, the German said: “Yes, Virgil van Dijk touches him, but we all know Lamela wants the touch and we all know there were so (many) hard fouls in the first half and we didn’t get any fouls.

“That was the level for the game today, but then a situation in the last minute like that? Wow! He (the official) wanted to be middle of interest and he is.

“It was clear two sides (of) high quality both wanted to win desperately, but the result was massively influenced by linesman decisions.

“We have to take it, that’s how it is.”

Tottenham win over Manchester United in front of record crowd

Tottenham Hotspur solidified their top- four credentials with a dominant 2-0 win over Manchester United in front of an English Premier League record crowd at Wembley on Wednesday.

Christian Eriksen gave the hosts the lead after 11 seconds, the second fastest goal in Premier League history.

Manchester United’s woeful defending was exposed again for Tottenham’s second, with Phil Jones turning the ball into his own net after 27 minutes.

The win lifted Tottenham two points behind third-placed Liverpool and Chelsea in fourth as second-placed Manchester United dropped 15 points behind leaders Manchester City.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking after the match, praised his players for putting up a fantastic performance.

He added that the result had put his team in a good position for a top four finish.

“It’s a fantastic dressing room after a fantastic performance. The performance was great and I congratulate the players because they deserve all the credit.

“The first goal was a fantastic goal. Christian Eriksen believed that it would arrive in this situation. We tell the young players to always anticipate.

“I am so pleased we are in the race for the top four.

“There’s a lot of games to play and that is why we need to stay focused.

“The early goal for us was good so that we can go on and dominate the game. That goal gave us more confidence and belief.

“Dele Alli was very good today, but all the team was great. The quality of performance was fantastic.

“It’ll be tough against Liverpool now because they are one of the best teams — but it’s about taking it one game at a time.”

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, on his part, said the goals scored against his side were ridiculous.

“It’s a performance that starts with a ridiculous goal. That goal after a few seconds has a big influence in the game because Tottenham can play the way they like to play.

“In the end, we played against a very good team. Both goals were ridiculous goals.

“The first goal is an accumulation of mistakes in spite of the fact that everything happened so fast. My players have watched the Tottenham kick-off many, many times.

“It was a really, really bad goal. After the first goal the team had a good reaction — we were there and tried to create.

“The second goal mentally kills the team. A team to win matches needs to score goals and also defend well — on this occasion we were very bad.’’

Super Sunday: Salah fit to face Manchester City

Jurgen Klopp expects Mohamed Salah to be fit to face Manchester City on Sunday but refused to discuss transfer rumours regarding Daniel Sturridge and Naby Keita.

Salah has missed the last two matches, 2-1 wins over Burnley and Everton in the Premier League and FA Cup respectively, due to a groin injury.

But the Egypt international is back in training and set to be available when Pep Guardiola’s runaway leaders arrive at Anfield this weekend.

“If nothing happens in this moment, Mo is back,” Klopp told a news conference.

“He is training completely normal. That’s very important for us.”

Of Liverpool’s other injured players, Klopp said: “Hendo [captain Jordan Henderson] is out on the pitch and training, [but] not in team training so far.

“Alberto Moreno is back in team training yesterday, [the game against] City is too early but he should be back soon.”

Sturridge is the subject of rumours linking the forward with a move away from Anfield this month, but Klopp was reluctant to provide updates about the situation of individual players.

“I have nothing to say about that! That’s how it is,” he said.

“We will see. Until 31 January a lot of things can happen. You will know before I will. Not only with Daniel.”

Of the England international’s recovery from a muscle problem, Klopp added: “He’s back in training and on the way to being back again.”

Klopp also rejected suggestions Naby Keita’s move from RB Leipzig to Liverpool, set to be completed at the end of the campaign, could be brought forward to help the team cope with the departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

“My understanding is there is nothing to say,” Klopp replied when asked about the Guinea international.

“I will not start [speculating] now. He is a player of Leipzig and will be in the summer here. That’s all I know.”

Klopp: “Virgil was quite impressive against Everton, you have to say that. But the City game is a completely different game. The team’s tactics should be as tuned as possible and I haven’t made a decision so far [on who

Liverpool have already made a major outlay in the transfer market, signing Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for a reported fee of £75million.

The Netherlands international defender impressed and scored the winner on debut in the victory over local rivals Everton, but this weekend’s meeting with the title favourites could prove too challenging for a player who is still getting to know his new team-mates.

“The team [thoughts], tactics, [need to be] as tuned as possible. I don’t make a decision if he is ready for that.

“All the other three boys are in really good shape. In this moment, if nothing else happens, then I should sleep OK thinking about that [selection] problem.
