Barcelona seal Coutinho deal for £142million

Barcelona have signed Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho in a club-record transfer.

Mirror Football understands that the Reds have settled on an agreement for the Brazilian for an initial fee of €120million (£106.4m), with a further €40m (£35.5m) in add-ons.

It is the second-most expensive transfer of all-time, trailing the £198million PSG paid Barcelona for Neymar last summer – and it is the most money ever received by an English club.

Coutinho will pen a five-year deal, with the Catalan giants likely to give him an extension in the summer to ensure his deal does not run out mid-season.

The 25-year-old was a notable absentee as Jurgen Klopp’s side jet off to Dubai for a mid-season break. He will instead fly out to Barcelona to wrap up his dream move.

Coutinho was absent for the Merseyside derby in Friday evening, with the Reds beating Everton 2-1 to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Brazilian is set to be unveiled later this evening, the player’s representatives believe, with Barcelona set to unveil Coutinho early next week.

Coutinho tried to force through a move to Barcelona over the summer by handing in a transfer request to Liverpool.

However, the Reds held firm in their insistence he would not be sold, rejecting all offers from the Catalan giants.

Despite his desire for the switch to the Nou Camp, Coutinho has impressed for Liverpool this season, scoring 12 goals in all competitions. Here is a roll call of football’s expensive transfer of all time

    1. Neymar (Barcelona to PSG, £198m – 2017)
    2. Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool to Barcelona, £142m – 2018)
    3. Ousmane Dembele (Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona, £97m – 2017)
    4. Paul Pogba (Juventus to Manchester United, £89m – 2016)
    5. Gareth Bale (Tottenham to Real Madrid, £86m – 2013)
    6. Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United to Real Madrid, £80m – 2009)
    7. Gonzalo Higuain (Napoli to Juventus, £75.3m – 2016)
    8. Neymar (Santos to Barcelona, £71.5m – 2013)

Barca fans insist on Coutinho as club tables £133m

Barcelona appear to have been pushed to the wall with no other option but to table a £133million bid for Liverpool forward Philippe Coutinho. Over 70% of the club fans have reportedly voted to have the player at the Nou camp as soon as possible.

The Catalan giants saw three sizeable bids – the biggest of which was worth £114m – for the Brazilian playmaker rebuffed last summer, despite the player handing in a transfer request.

But, according to Mundo Deportivo, Barca are set to revisit the option this month with an offer of almost £100m – with £36m to be offered in add-ons to make the deal more attractive to the Reds.

Barca feel the player’s desire to move to the Nou Camp will work in their favour and the Spanish outlet claims president Josep Maria Bartomeu is in constant contact with the Premier League club.

The bid would be in line with what Barcelona offered Borussia Dortmund for Ousmane Dembele last summer in the wake of Neymar’s record-breaking departure to Paris Saint-Germain.

In a poll by another Spanish magazine, Sport, Barca fans were asked to vote for which player they would like their club to sign next.

The Brazil international comfortably topped the poll, earning 70 per cent of the vote – 52 per cent more than closest rival Yerry Mina, the Palmeiras centre back.

Despite Nike’s online store appearing to suggest Coutinho’s move to Barcelona was imminent after inviting customers to ‘Shop Coutinho’s look’, the club has denied that a deal has already been struck.

They will, however, endeavour in earnest to make the 25-year-old their next superstar signing this month.

Assault: Flanagan to appear in court January 2

Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan has been charged with common assault, police have said.

Merseyside Police said the 24-year-old full-back had been charged following an incident in Liverpool city centre on Friday.

A force spokesman said: “Merseyside Police can confirm that Jonathan Patrick Flanagan, aged 24, from Cressington in Liverpool, has been charged with Section 39 common assault following an incident on Duke Street in Liverpool city centre at around 3.20am on Friday, December 22.

“He has been released on conditional police bail and will appear before Liverpool City Magistrates’ Court on January 2, 2018.”

Flanagan came through Liverpool’s academy system and made his senior Reds debut in 2011, though he has played just once this season in the Carabao Cup.

The defender, who spent last year on loan with Burnley, has also won one England cap in a warm-up friendly for the 2014 World Cup.

A Liverpool spokesperson said: “The club has been made aware of an alleged incident involving a member of the first team playing squad. We will be making no further comment on the matter while the process is ongoing with the relevant authorities.”

Flanagan has earned numerous plaudits for his style of play since his breakthrough into the Liverpool first team in November 2013; most notably, the World Cup-winning former Brazil captain and full back Cafu heralded Flanagan as his “successor”, applauding his “speed, strength and determination” and stating he “has everything required to be one of the best full-backs in the world”

  • ‘Salah not just a player but an Ambassador’

‘Salah not just a player but an Ambassador’

Africa footballer of the year hot favorite Mohamed Salah is not just a footballer but can also pass as a philanthropist of with soft spot for the down trodden and needy. The Liverpool super star that began his soccer career from a humble beginning has not forgotten how and where he started despite his rising profile.

In fact he started on a dusty pitch in Nagrig, 80 miles north of the Egyptian capital of Cairo.

This is where the local children come to enjoy themselves and be free. Nagrig might be economically challenged but its people are friendly and happy and, today, they have never been more proud.

It is from these humble beginnings, after all, that world football’s latest star emerged. This is the home of Mohamed Salah.

To walk around these quiet streets, you would not think it possible for someone to embark on such a thrilling journey but Salah, the eldest of four children, played on that same pitch, a two-minute walk from his family apartment, believing he could emulate his idols Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane and Francesco Totti.

Salah has given many things to Nagrig. He bought gym equipment for the community centre that now bears his name and paid for an all-weather football pitch to be built at Mohamed Ayyad Al-Tantawy school, where he studied.

He gives money to help couples get married and frequently contributes to charity. More than anything, he has given hope.

‘He still comes back to Nagrig, every Ramadan, to present prizes to local kids,’ says Mohamed Bassyouni, a childhood friend.

‘He comes here; he plays table tennis and pool. When he comes back, he signs every autograph, stands for every picture. He hasn’t changed.’

Mohamed Salah has become the hero Liverpool fans craved after 20 goals in first 26 games

It was discovered Salah felt he had ‘unfinished business’ in the Premier League after difficulties at Stamford Bridge and when it was put to Jurgen Klopp — who had also long been a Salah fan at the end of 2016 that Liverpool should pounce, the verdict was unanimous.

What has happened since his arrival in June has been beyond all expectations, but there is more to it than just 20 goals from 26 games.

Salah is becoming the hero the Kop had craved and, back in Egypt, his popularity has gone off the scale. He carries the hopes of a nation, the bond between player and fans cemented when he scored a last-minute penalty against Congo in October to send Egypt to a first World Cup since 1990.

‘Salah had a hand in all seven goals that took us to Russia — two assists, scoring five of his own,’ Mahmoud Fayez, Egypt’s assistant manager, explains.

‘The penalty? It was one of the most unforgettable moments in my life. But we all trusted him. The day before we played Congo, I called him.

‘I told him, “You are the one for the penalty kick if we get one”. The first thing he did was practice.  Three or four penalties. When he did it for real, it was amazing. The emotion was incredible.’

Salah was offered a villa as a reward by Mamdouh Abbas, a former president of Zamalek. But the player asked that a donation be made to Nagrig instead. And there is another tale that has not been told.

While Salah was playing in Alexandria, his family was robbed. The thief was caught a couple of days later and it was the intention of Salah’s father to press charges.

When his son heard what happened, however, he asked him to drop the case. What happened next gives you the biggest insight of all into his character, as Salah gave the thief some money to get his life up and running and tried to help him find a job.

Salah wants everyone to have a chance to better themselves and that it is why the Egyptian is uniting a nation.

‘He is doing an extraordinary job,’ Fayez says.  ‘The secret of his brilliance?  It is his modesty.

‘He is a superstar but he lives as a simple person. He uses his abilities to serve his country and you can see what it means to him when he sings the national anthem.

‘He fights every second, every moment, every sprint, every tackle, every shot. He fights. This is Salah. This is why he is the hero of every Egyptian.’

    B’MOUTH 0-4 LIVERPOOL

Liverpool strolled to a comprehensive victory on the south coast. The three points moves Liverpool back into the top four, while Bournemouth’s 10th defeat of the season leaves them still just one point above the relegation zone.

Liverpool were irresistible at times, with Mo Salah grabbing his 20th goal of the season in all competitions.

Liverpool forward Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain tells Sky Sports after the match that “I think we competed from the start, we had to be at 100% and switched on in defence, and going forward we have the ability to open doors and score goals

“The front four have been on fire, they are not bad. Everyone’s a quality player and the rest of us have to sneak our noses in there. Squad rotation is important, keeps us fresh.

“I am trying my best, I think I have made strides and I keep improving. I am trying to do everything the manager wants, I thought I did OK today. We know Philippe Coutinho can come up with magic, and the boys at the back did well as well.

“Phil’s been the most professional player all season, he always gives his all, and that’s all we can ask of him.”

Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho tells Sky Sports: “It was a nice goal but most important thing is we are getting better and we won the game. We deserved it.

“Everyone enjoys to play, the manager sometimes changes it but everyone gives their best and that’s good for Liverpool.”

  • Dejected Koeman yet to recover from Everton sacking

Dejected Koeman yet to recover from Everton sacking

Former Everton manager Ronald Koeman is yet to get over the disappointment of being sacked by the English Premier League club and has rejected multiple managerial offers since his dismissal.

Koeman was fired in October, after 16 months in charge of the Merseyside club, as significant transfer spending failed to inspire Everton.

The Merseyside club had dropped into the relegation zone after winning just two of their opening nine league games.

“I had started something at Everton and I really wanted to finish it in a good way. This is why my disappointment is bigger than ever before.

“I have to be realistic and I am not moaning about it,” the Dutchman said.

The 54-year-old was touted to take over at several vacant managerial roles at Premier League and European clubs, including West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United, but turned down the offers.

“I need to put those feelings of disappointment away first,’’ Koeman added. “This is the reason why I’ve not taken any of the offers — the offers were there immediately after leaving Everton.

“I had a few offers from the Premier League and a few more elsewhere in Europe.”

Everton have climbed to 10th in the standings under the guidance of interim boss David Unsworth and newly-appointed permanent manager Sam Allardyce.

They travel to fourth-placed Liverpool for the Merseyside derby on Sunday.

  • Willian helps Chelsea hold Liverpool at Anfield

Willian helps Chelsea hold Liverpool at Anfield

A strange 85th minute goal from Brazilian Willian earned English Premier League champions Chelsea a 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Saturday.

This was after Mohamed Salah’s 15th goal of the season looked to have given the hosts the three points.

Two minutes after coming on as a late substitute at Anfield, Willian whipped in an attempted cross from the right which floated over Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and into the net.

Salah, who was outstanding for Liverpool, had put his team ahead in the 65th minute when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain poked the ball away from a hesitant Tiemoue Bakayoko.

The Egyptian then pounced on the loose ball to fire past Courtois.

The result leaves Chelsea in third place on 26 points, eight behind leaders Manchester City who play on Sunday, while Liverpool are fifth on 23 points.

In other Premier League games also played on Saturday Jose Mourinho’s United bounced back from their surprise UEFA Champions League defeat at Basel in midweek to win.

It was their 39th straight home win in all competitions.

The win also meant the Red Devils equalled a 51-year-old record set by Sir Matt Busby, thanks to Lewis Dunk’s second half own goal.

“I think we were more spirit and heart than quality. My boys didn’t play well but they gave everything,” Mourinho said.

“For me probably Brighton deserve more than the result they got.”

Also, Tottenham’s bid to win the title for the first time since 1961 was left in tatters after a 1-1 draw with lowly West Bromwich Albion left them 10 points behind City.

Spurs have had mixed results at Wembley since moving into their temporary home while White Hart Lane is rebuilt.

But, once again, they lacked a cutting edge against supposedly inferior opponents.

“We weren’t clinical. It is always difficult in the Premier League when you concede a goal so early,” Pochettino said.

“I’m disappointed because the effort was massive, but we lost two points.”

  • Henderson admits Liverpool played below par

Henderson admits Liverpool played below par

Jordan Henderson has frankly admitted Liverpool ‘let themselves down’ after their latest implosion in a big game away from home.

Liverpool stayed in Seville in Wednesday as the intention was to do a warm-weather training session ahead of Saturday’s collision with Chelsea but the day will have taken on the feel of a post mortem following the calamitous manner they allowed a 3-0 first-half lead to become a 3-3 draw.

They now face an anxious final night against Spartak Moscow that will determine whether they progress to the Champions League knockout phase or drop into the Europa League after Christmas; to throw away such a glorious opportunity was absurd.

Henderson, Liverpool’s captain, did not try to offer any excuses for the performance he and his team-mates produced in the second half. Instead, he bemoaned the manner in which they capitulated and was at a loss how the levels of their display were so wildly differing.

‘We have let ourselves down,’ said Henderson. ‘The performance in the second half undid all the good work we did in the first. We were disciplined, kept the ball at the right times, scored brilliant goals and defended well. Even though I thought they had good chances in the first half I thought we defended well.

‘It just felt as though we didn’t start well in the second half, straight from the kick-off, and we didn’t recover. They scored the first and the crowd got up. They started to have a good go and it becomes difficult then.

‘We didn’t play as much football as we should have, the biggest thing for us was we stopped playing, stopped getting the ball up to the front three, they were getting it back cheaply and it invites pressure.

‘We are really disappointed. It doesn’t feel good but at the same time when we come to look at the table it is still in our own hands. We are top of the group, we have to try and stay positive.’

This is another performance that has given Liverpool’s critics ammunition. Sevilla were always going to present a different test compared to the ones they had faced in Southampton, Maribor, West Ham and Huddersfield, the sides they had beaten in a four-match winning spree.

That they fluffed their lines just raises more questions about the mentality of the squad, given they capsized in their other big away games this season against Manchester City (5-0 defeat in September) and Tottenham (4-1 defeat in October). Henderson is well aware that it has put Liverpool back in the spotlight.

Liverpool Coach Discharged from Hospital after Ill-Health Scare

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp returned to work on Thursday after a health scare which forced him to miss training on Wednesday.

The German was discharged from hospital on Wednesday evening having been admitted for tests earlier in the day after feeling unwell.

However, after a night at home, the 50-year-old German manager was back at Melwood on Thursday.

All players have now returned from international duty – Spaniard Alberto Moreno, Germany’s Emre Can, Dutchman Georginio Wijnaldum and Serbia’s Marko Grujic – as the full squad trained together on Thursday afternoon.

The only real doubt is over Sadio Mane’s hamstring problem, although the Senegal international has yet to be ruled out of Saturday’s clash with Southampton.

Midfielder Adam Lallana is back with the group having not played a competitive game this campaign because of a thigh injury.

Meanwhile captain Jordan Henderson has declared himself fit after a similar problem caused him to miss the Premier League win over West Ham before the international break and England’s two friendlies against Germany and Brazil.

‘I feel good. I completed my first session on Wednesday, so hopefully I can play a part at the weekend,’ Henderson said.
