    Liverpool records £19.8m loss

Liverpool have posted record revenue of £301million for the financial year to May 31, 2016, but made a loss of £19.8m over the same period.

The latest figures represent an increase of £3.9m compared to the previous year’s revenue, with media income growing by £1m to £123.6m, while matchday revenue increased by £3.4m to £62.4m.

Commercial revenue decreased by £0.7m to £115.7m, mainly due to the construction of the Main Stand at Anfield impacting on access to the stadium on a non-match day.

The arrival of players such as Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Marko Grujic, Danny Ings, Nathaniel Clyne and Joe Gomez was blamed for the loss of almost £20m.

“These results demonstrate the solid financial progress that has been made over the past six years under the leadership of FSG [Fenway Sports Group] with continued investment in the playing squad and the completion of the main stand,” COO Andy Hughes stated.

“The increase in the underlying revenue adds further strength to the club’s financial position despite the cost of football rising with player transfer fees, wages and agents’ costs

“During this reporting period, we also agreed a new five-year credit facility, which further secures the club’s long-term financial stability

“All three main revenue streams continue to show strength and commercial revenues held firm irrespective of the impact of the Main Stand at Anfield.”

Liverpool announced profits of £60m last year, although those figures owed much to the lucrative sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

    Lallana signs £150,000-a-week contract

Adam Lallana has signed a new four-year contract at Liverpool worth £150,000-a-week.

The deal keeps the 28-year-old attacking midfielder at Anfield until 2021 and follows that of Philippe Coutinho, who signed a new five-year contract last month.

He has scored seven goals in 27 appearances for Liverpool so far this season and overall has 20 goals in 117 games.

The England international was signed by Brendan Rodgers in a £25million transfer from Southampton in 2014.

His form was inconsistent in his first season at Anfield but under the guidance of Klopp, who replaced Rodgers in October 2015, Lallana has thrived.

The two share a close relationship and Lallana lives next to Klopp in Formby.

‘I see him taking his bins out, we take each other’s mail,’ Lallana told Sportsmail in August.

‘I remember one of his first meetings when he arrived. He told us he was going to be our friend but not our best friend. That’s how it should be.’

He has also established himself as a key member of the England setup.

He scored his first international goal in September with an injury time winner against Slovakia in World Cup qualifying and has 29 caps overall, with three goals.

Liverpool, currently fifth in the Premier League with 49 points from 25 games, are next in action on Monday, February 27 away to Leicester

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates was reportedly contacted by Liverpool regarding a potential takeover when the club were attempting to push American businessmen Tom Hicks and George Gillett out of the club.

In legal documents relating to a court battle between Mill Financial, Gillett and the Royal Bank of Scotland, it has been revealed that Gates, who is worth an estimated £68.3 billion, was contacted but he opted not to respond.

According to the Liverpool Echo, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who celebrated his team winning their fifth Super Bowl title last Sunday, was also contacted.

The publication has revealed details of a deposition involving former Liverpool chairman Sir Martin Broughton, who was asked if “there was at least an attempt to contact Bill Gates and Bob Kraft in the US?”

He responded, “Correct” before adding that the club were “making contacts with people around the world” in a bid to oust Hicks and Gillett, who eventually agreed to sell the club in April 2010.

Fenway Sports Group, headed by John W Henry, eventually bought the Premier League club in October of that year.

Adam Lallana gets thigh tattoo honours

An overjoyed Liverpool fan has taken his love for the club’s attacking midfielder Adam Lallana to the next level.

The American fan settled for a breath taking tatoo to celebrate his idol. While football tattoos to honour heroes may now be commonplace, few are as spectacular as this one showcased by the fan named Andreah.

The picture, which surfaced on twitter, came with a caption ‘The pain is worth it to show my love for #AdamLallana and @LFC’.

Lallana himself, who joined the club from Southampton in 2014, has been in fine form as Liverpool mounted a title challenge this season.

But the club has fallen off the pace since the turn of the year, and Lallana said they need to learn from Chelsea, who look set to take the Premier League .

‘You can see they have a lot of experience and that they are used to winning,’ he told the Liverpool Echo.

‘They know how to win games even when not at their best. You don’t have to always win by scoring five or six.

‘Maybe that’s an area we need to improve on. We maybe need to realise how good we are at times.’ Liverpool just fresh from a 2-0 defeat by Hull City had earlier lost three games in a roll, with some predicting that there is no guarantee that the Reds will clinch maximum point when they face visiting Spurs on Saturday

Cisse dumps football for DJ career

Former Liverpool and Marseille striker Djibril Cisse has announced his retirement from football, revealing plans to focus on DJ career.

Cisse picked up 41 caps for France during a playing career that also saw him win the Champions League, FA Cup and Super Cup with Liverpool, as well as the 2003 Confederations Cup.

But the 35-year-old, who last played for JS Saint-Pierroise in the Reunion Premier League, has now decided to call it a day.

He had reportedly been training with former club Auxerre with a view to a return after previously declaring his career over in October 2015 due to a hip injury.

“I loved being a footballer,” he told Yahoo Sport. “So far football has been my whole life.

“I would like to have continued my career, which was interrupted in spite of me, but I have to admit today that football is finished.

“I will devote myself wholeheartedly to my career as a DJ, producer and consultant, as well as developing my clothing brand.

“Thank you for all your support.   The adventure continues as another life begins.  “A lion never dies.”

    Firmino handed driving ban, fine.

Roberto Firmino has been fined £20,000 and banned from driving for a year after admitting drink-driving at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court.

The Liverpool forward was charged with drink-driving after being stopped and subsequently arrested in Liverpool on Christmas Eve.

Michael Hogan, defending the 25-year-old, said the incident happened the day after the footballer’s family home was targeted by burglars who were “prepared to use extreme force”.

Firmino said: “I apologise, without reservation, to the club, the manager, my team-mates and the supporters for putting myself in this situation. What I have done is wrong and sets a bad example.

“I promise to everyone in the LFC family that I will learn from this mistake, learn from this experience, and not repeat it in the future.”

A LFC spokesperson said: “The player has been disciplined by the club for his actions and reminded of his responsibilities for the present and future.

“The nature of this action will remain private; however it does not impact on his availability for selection for matches.

“The club considers this to be an isolated incident and a rare lapse in judgement and professionalism.

“We will however work with the player to further educate him on the dangers associated with drink driving specifically.”

Firmino has since featured 10 times for Liverpool since his arrest, including Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Premier League leaders Chelsea.

  • Coutinho signs new Liverpool contract

    Coutinho signs new Liverpool contract

Philippe Coutinho has committed his long-term future to Liverpool by signing the biggest contract in the club’s history.

The Brazil international, who has blossomed into the key figure in Jurgen Klopp’s team, has put pen to paper on a deal worth more than £200,000 per week that will keep him at the club until 2022.

Coutinho arrived at Anfield four years ago from Inter Milan and his performances have alerted top clubs across Europe to his ability but he is settled on Merseyside with his young family and has a strong relationship with Klopp.

Barcelona were persistently linked with him at the beginning of the campaign, while Brazil legend Ronaldo stated his wish for Real Madrid to sign Coutinho but, notably, there is no release clause in this new contract.

Coutinho said: ‘I am very happy to sign a new contract here. It is a club that I am very grateful to and this shows my happiness here. I will work much harder to repay the belief shown in me.

‘I signed this new contract to stay here for a few more years because it’s a great honour for me.

Coutinho, who missed a number of weeks with an ankle injury and only returned to action in that defeat at St Mary’s Stadium on January 11, is determined to help his side get back on track.

  • Sunderland score 2 penalty kicks to hold visiting Liverpool

Two Jermain Defoe penalty kicks meant hosts Sunderland twice came from behind on Monday to earn a point against second-placed Liverpool.

The Reds took a deserved lead when Daniel Sturridge flicked in a header after Dejan Lovren’s mishit shot.

Sunderland equalised six minutes later as Defoe scored from the spot following Ragnar Klavan’s trip on Didier Ndong, before Sadio Mane put the visitors back ahead with a close-range finish.

However, Mane then handled in his own 18-yard box and Defoe converted the penalty kick to snatch an unlikely point.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the result leaves Liverpool five points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, who play their game in hand on Wednesday at Tottenham.

However, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will surely see it as two points dropped after his side led twice, had 71 per cent of the possession and had 15 shots on target.

Only an inspired performance from Black Cats keeper Vito Mannone denied Liverpool further goals, before Mane needlessly stuck out an arm to block Seb Larsson’s free-kick, costing his side dearly.

To make things worse for Liverpool, Sturridge, who scored only his second Premier League goal of the season, limped off late on after clashing with Papy Djilobodji.

Meanwhile, 10-man Manchester City moved up to third as they withstood a spirited Burnley fightback in front of a relieved Etihad Stadium.

Fernandinho was dismissed towards the end of an even first half for a two-footed challenge on Johan Gudmundsson.

But the hosts improved after the break as Gael Clichy squeezed home a shot before Sergio Aguero, on as a substitute, fired home from a tight angle.

Ben Mee smashed home via the underside of the bar shortly after, but Burnley could not force a leveller in spite of a fine chance for Andre Gray late on.

Beginning the day 10 points behind leaders Chelsea, anything less than victory would have prompted some to begin reading the last rites on City’s title challenge.

As it is, Pep Guardiola’s side will look at the league table with renewed optimism as they closed to within two points of second-place Liverpool.

In addition, one and possibly both of Chelsea and Tottenham to drop points when they face each other on Wednesday.(NAN)
