    Liverpool chase Taiwo Awoniyi

The Reds have reportedly expressed an interest in signing Nigerian youth-team international Taiwo Awoniyi, who currently plays for Imperial Academy in his nation of birth.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds have jumped to the front of the queue for the player’s signature, a queue which also includes the likes of Monaco and FC Porto.

Awoniyi, a 17-year-old striker, shot to prominence by helping his country win the Under-17 World Cup two years ago, scoring four goals in the competition to lead his side to victory.

Despite his tender age, Awoniyi has more recently progressed to Nigeria’s Under-20 team, and scored two goals on debut. The Echo state that he’s now weighing up his options ahead of his 18th birthday, after which he would be permitted to move abroad.

His agent, intriguingly, is former Wolves, Stoke and Hull midfielder Seyi Olofinjana – suggesting he could well be open to a move to England, should one become available.

Liverpool have already moved to strengthen their academy side this summer, bringing in Bobby Adekanye and Brooks Lennon among others, and perhaps Awoniyi could prove to be the next such addition.

Hull City earns vital win against Liverpool

Hull City earned a vital win in their battle against relegation from the Premier League by beating Liverpool 1-0 last night.

Michael Dawson’s goal was enough to lift the Tigers four points clear of the relegation zone and inflict a damaging blow to Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

Mario Balotelli had an early chance for the Reds after winning a free kick in the opening minutes, but his attempt from the resulting set piece deflected wide of the post.

The visitors then came close to breaking the deadlock as Dame N’Doye met Sone Aluko’s cross, but Simon Mignolet got down to beat his header to safety.

Liverpool began to take control of the match and Philippe Coutinho forced a save from Steve Harper after meeting Jordan Henderson’s low corner.

The Reds continued to press and midway through the first half Balotelli was picked out inside the box by Raheem Sterling, before attempting to score from a back heel, but his effort was straight at the keeper.

Moments later Hull almost caught the visitors out on the break, as Robbie Brady burst down the left before driving in a low cross that was beaten away by Mignolet. The ball then dropped kindly to Jake Livermore, but his header was clawed away by the keeper.

The Tigers did manage to punish their opponents by taking the lead in the 37th minute, as Michael Dawson found himself free inside the box to head Tom Huddlestone’s cross into the far corner.

Liverpool looked for a quick response and Henderson saw his hooked attempt from Jordon Ibe’s delivery palmed away by Harper.

On the stroke of half time, the Reds created another decent opportunity to score when Glen Johnson raced to the byline and pulled the ball across the face of goal.

but none of his teammates were able to get a touch as Hull took their lead into the break.

After the break, Henderson was denied by Harper again, as his stinging volley from the edge

of the box was tipped behind by the keeper.

Henderson looked to be his side’s best hope of grabbing an equaliser and he fired in a

powerful drive from range that required Harper to make another stop.

Adam Lallana was next to threaten for the Reds, but after cutting inside from the right, his

curling effort edged narrowly wide of the far post.

Despite a barrage of late pressure from the visitors, they were unable to find a way past the

Hull defence, as the home side held on to claim the three points.

    Liverpool praises Ibe

Liverpool manager   Brendan Rodgers has  praised Jordon Ibe for the quality he showed against Everton on Saturday.

The youngster impressed as he looks to warm himself to the hearts of the Anfield faithfuls.

It was a brilliant performance from the dashing winger in Saturday’s Merseyside derby.

The 19-year-old had a good time on-loan in the first half of the season at Derby County and his manager feels that has made the starlet a better player.

Ibe was brilliant at Goodison Park – making only his second English Premier League start – and struck the post with a rasping shot midway through the first half.

“We’ve been waiting to put Jordon in. We called him back because he felt he can really contribute,” Rodgers was quoted.

“He had a great spell on loan, which is what you want for your young players, to get that experience.

“He went with an outstanding manager in Steve McClaren, had a good time at a good club but it was time to come back and feature.

    Steven Gerrard confirms Liverpool exit

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard on Friday ended his long term relationship with the five-time European champions.

The former England star described his decision to leave the club at the end of the season “the toughest” of his life.

The 34-year-old, out of contract this summer, joined the Reds aged nine and has scored 180 goals in 695 games, the BBC reports.

“This has been the toughest decision of my life, one both me and my family have agonised over for a good deal of time,” the BBC quoted Gerrard as saying on Friday.

He added he would continue to play but not for a potential rival as he could “never contemplate” facing Liverpool.

Gerrard is being linked with a move to Major League Soccer in the United States once the English season ends.

He stressed: “I won’t be playing for a competing club and will not therefore be lining up against Liverpool.

“My decision is completely based on my wish to experience something different in my career and life and I also want to make sure that I have no regrets when my playing career is eventually over.

“From now until the last kick of the last game of the season, I will be as fully committed to the team as I ever have been and giving everything I have to help Liverpool win games.”

Gerrard, born in the Merseyside village of Whiston, joined Liverpool’s academy when he was nine years old, making his first-team debut as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers in November 1998.

He led the club to the Champions League title in 2005, scoring his side’s first goal as the Anfield giants came from three down to draw 3-3 against AC Milan and then win on penalties.

He has also won the UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups, one Community Shield and two UEFA Super Cups, and earned 114 England caps before retiring after the World Cup.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said: “It is almost an impossible task to find the words to appropriately sum up Steven Gerrard and his importance to Liverpool.”
“This is an era where the word ‘legend’ is vastly overused, but in his case it actually doesn’t do him justice.”

… Offers Borini in exchange for Lazio midfielder

Liverpool has offered Fabio Borini to Lazio in exchange for Nigeria midfielder Ogenyi Onazi.

‘The club is desperate for more strength in the midfield and Brendan Rodgers has identified 22-year-old Onazi as the man to help the Reds do well in the Premier League, africanFootball.com reports.

The Nigeria international is a key man for the Serie A club, but Liverpool is looking to take advantage of Lazio’s long-term interest in Borini by offering the former Chelsea and Roma forward plus £8million for Onazi’s services.

Borini has failed to impress this season alongside Liverpool’s other misfiring strikers, and Rodgers is ready to part ways with the Italian as he looks to engineer an early return for Lille loanee Divock Origi.

Onazi, who has been linked to move to EPL sides Everton and Liverpool, only recently extended his contract at Lazio.

  • Reds held in Bulgaria

    Reds held in Bulgaria

Liverpool continued their recent run of poor form as they conceded a late goal to draw 2-2 against Ludogorets Razgrad in their Champions League clash yesterday.

The Reds got off to the worst possible start in the match as Kolo Toure’s clearance fell into the path of Marcelinho, who fired a dipping strike at goal, which wasn’t held by Simon Mignolet and Dani Abalo was on hand to power in the rebound.

Liverpool got back into the match almost immediately when Lambert capitalised on confusion between Razgrad defender Cosmin Moti and keeper Vladislav Stoyanov as the England international guided a header into the top corner.

Sterling showed composure minutes later when he capitalised on a mistake from the home side and sprinted down the left. He then crossed into the middle for Jordan Henderson to fire the Reds into the lead.

Liverpool should have put the game beyond doubt as Steven Gerrard released the run of Sterling to leave the winger one-on-one with Stoyanov, but the keeper read the England international and was able to smother his effort.

  • Spurs move for £30 million Porto hit man in January

Spurs move for £30 million Porto hit man in January

Liverpool will address their goals shortage by making a move for Porto’s Colombian striker Jackson Martinez in the January transfer window as summer signing Mario Balotelli continues to struggle for goals up front.

Whether or not Liverpool are prepared to give up on Balotelli, it is becoming clear that the Italian is not suited to playing a lone striker’s role up ffront, and in the absence of Daniel Sturridge more firepower is required for the red half of Merseyside.

Martinez has scored for fun in his two full seasons in Portugal, with sixty goals plundered in two seasons, with a further 12 on the board for this year.

The only concern over the Colombian is that he bias not been tested in one of Europe’s top leagues. Many of those concerns were largely addressed by his performances for Colombia in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, however doubts remain, as at the age of 28, Martinez does not have long to adjust to the demands of the English Premier League.

On the other hand, Mario Balotelli is a player who has had plenty of experience in the Premier League and ahe on his side, along with a transfer fee half on what Martinez would reportedly cost, yet he appears to be being written off as a failure already. Perhaps Martinez will be worth the risk.

Fiorentina, Inter plot bids for Borini

It was revealed two weeks ago by Borini’s agent Marco De Marchi that Inter lead the race for the Italian striker but league rivals Fiorentina have thrown their hat into the ring.

Premier League duo Sunderland and QPR wanted to sign him in the summer but Borini rejected the opportunity to leave Liverpool and De Marchi has suggested his client remains keen on staying at Anfield.

“Fabio has great relationship with Rodgers. He wants to find space and he’s working for that.

“He has contract until 2017 and wants to play for Liverpool. The January market? Now is soon, let’s see.

“Many clubs are interested in him.

“We have respect for Liverpool so Fabio just thinks about Liverpool. When you play for one of best clubs in the world that is normal.”
