Awoniyi, a former World Cup-winning Golden Eaglets forward who scored in every match, propelled the Flying Eagles to the ultimate victory in the nine-day competition that also saw reigning Glo Premier League champions, Pillars FC of Kano, former champions, Enyimba FC of Aba, Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt, Warri Wolves and the national U-23 team as participants.

“We believe Taiwo Awoniyi deserves to be hailed after his stellar performance in the Super 6,” Globacom said in a statement in Lagos on Wednesday.

“We are delighted that the Super 6 has especially prepared all the teams for the different continental competitions they are about to participate in and we believe Nigeria will benefit from the tournament ultimately,” the statement concluded.

  • 2013/14 Glo League Season: LMC delighted by clubs, players’ performances

2013/14 Glo League Season: LMC delighted by clubs, players’ performances

The League Management Company (LMC) has praised clubs and their players in the just ended Glo Premier League season for the successful participation but challenged them on the need to reach for greater heights as there are still more grounds to be covered to achieve the quality of league that can compete well within Africa and beyond.

Chairman of the LMC, Nduka Irabor said the LMC, going by the interim report on match statistics, has achieved moderate success with the reforms that were introduced at the start of the season through the registration requirements for participating clubs.

“The new regulation on minimum wage may not have been complied with 100%  but we are gladdened by the figures that have  emerged from field stats on goals and goals scoring by the players which is a pointer that with improved welfare, there will be more delight on the pitch. We have by far enjoyed a more quality season than the last two seasons in almost all indices that can be used in a comparative study of performances in and off the field,” said Irabor.

“This season has been remarkable for the strikers in more ways than one. We had a player netting six goals in one game, another two who scored four goals in a match and of course, we had 11 hat tricks, fewer cautions and expulsions that is evidence of the discipline and less rancorous atmosphere on the pitch”, the LMC Chairman said.

For the LMC, there are certainly more reasons to pop champagne this season than they would have celebrated in the last two seasons. A statistical analysis of the past three seasons shows that a  830 goals were scored as compared to 764 goals in 2012/13 and 690 goals in 2011/12. The average goal per match in the just concluded season came to 2.2 as compared to the flat two goals per match in the preceding seasons.

The LMC suggested that the improved welfare condition of players, which can be situated in the enhanced minimum salary, may have provided the impetus for the performance of the players. This season, the clubs reached an understanding with the LMC to abolish the practice of sign-on fees and pay a minimum monthly salary of N150,000 while pro-rating the sign-on fee as add-on to the salaries of the players, a development that saw some players earning as high as N600, 000.

There were still reports of indebtedness by clubs to players, though the club officials insisted that those were carried over sign-on fees from previous seasons. Irabor acknowledged that a negligible number of clubs defaulted in their financial obligation to players and reminded such clubs that they may not have any part in the league in line with the NFF Club Licensing Regulation which takes effect from December 1.

“As earlier stated, the season was not free of bumps, especially going by reports of unpaid salaries to players from a number of clubs. We hope they realise the implication of not meeting their obligations in the new licensing regime that comes into effect from December 1. It is a CAF mandated regulation and will be enforced for the benefit of football, the players and their clubs”, Irabor said.

“We have also seen a reduced number of wins in matches this season from 319 in the 2012/13 season to 301 this season which can be attributed to improvement in officiating. We are not saying everything about the league has been perfected but it is safe to say there is tremendous progress which can only be sustained if all stakeholders do what is expected of them”, the LMC boss said.

  • LMC adopts ‘no pay, no play’ condition for Clubs’ registration

LMC adopts ‘no pay, no play’ condition for Clubs’ registration

In apparent reaction to the spate of protests and threats of strike by players of some Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) clubs, the League Management Company (LMC) has warned that clubs found to be in breach of financial obligations to players will not be registered for the 2014/15 Glo Premier League season.

Chairman of LMC, Nduka Irabor emphasized that ‘a no pay, no play’ policy will be adopted in the registration process for the coming season and noted that all clubs seeking registration must provide proof that there are no overdue payables, especially to the players. He said the zero tolerance for clubs’ indebtedness to players will cover current and former players of the clubs.

Irabor made this clear in a recent communication to club managers and owners and reminded them that compliance to the Financial Criteria is a fundamental requirement for club registration under the Licensing Conditions.

He said the mandatory compliance with licensing regulations has been reiterated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) which also recently warned that clubs which are not licensed by the Federation would not be registered to compete in CAF Inter-Club competitions.

The LMC Chairman harped on the issue of players’ welfare which he said is a fundamental requirement under club licensing regulations and expressed displeasure that some clubs have been cited in cases of non-fulfillment of contractual obligation to players.

Irabor described as embarrassing to the nation’s football reports of street protests by players of these clubs for non-payment of their salaries and other accruable. He said: “The numerous reports about players in the league being owed salaries for several months, including public protests by players over unpaid salaries are disheartening and it is extremely embarrassing that a great football nation such as ours is exposed to ridicule and not allowed to see the performances of happy and well compensated professional football players.”

He, therefore, vowed that the LMC will uphold the sanctity of player contracts and offer players every necessary aid to obtain redress for any breach of contracts.

CAF just recently reminded clubs through the Federations that the enforcement of licensing conditions has become mandatory from December 1, 2014 and has amended its regulations for Inter-Club competitions to reflect the new realities. For Nigeria, clubs were reminded that they must have a Youth Development programme Coordinator who must have the prerequisite qualifications listed in the criteria.

One of the instruments introduced by the LMC to check overdue payments by clubs is the Financial Performance Guaranty which was widely resisted by most of the club’s during the current season. “The direct effect of non compliance with such basic condition is now too obvious for all to see. The LMC will not budge on its demand for Financial Performance Guarantee in the new season, we will not allow clubs to carry-over their indebtedness to players into the coming season.

The LMC Chairman concluded with an advice to the clubs to seek diversification of their revenue generating capacity by involving their immediate communities in the sporting and financial pursuits of the clubs and assured that they would have the cooperation and relevant guidance of the LMC in this regard.

LMC awaiting match report for Nembe, Gombe stalemate

The League Management Company(LMC) says a ruling on the abandoned game between Nembe City and Gombe United will be made only after receiving a detailed match report from the match officials as to what led to the abandonment.

The tie was stalemated at 2-2 before Gombe United got a penalty in the 89th minute for an alleged handball in the eighteen area by a Nembe player, but play was held up as the home team protested the awarded penalty.

The melee led to the abandonment of the game, as players of Nembe walked off the pitch, making it the second time in two weeks when a game involving bottom of the table Nembe has been abandoned.

In the tie postponed to yeterday due to heavy downpour on Wednesday, both teams were level at 1-1 after the first 45 minutes.

However, in the second half, Austin Ekpoma gave Gombe United the lead in the 63rd minute by calmly picking his spot with a curler from the edge of the box.

Six minutes from the final whistle, Sanni Yarma scored an own goal in a bid to stop a free-kick from Nembe City to put scores at 2-2.

The game’s moment of controversy arrived a minute to the end, when a Nembe player was adjudged to have handled in the box leading the referee to awarding a penalty to Gombe.

Nembe players, after protesting the decision, walked off the pitch, forcing the referee to call off the game after five minutes, the stipulated time for a referee to call off a game if a team leaves the pitch in protest.

Lobi to appeal LMC ‘s verdict

Lobi Stars have disclosed that they would appeal the verdict of the League Management Company(LMC) which ruled that their inconclusive Premier League Week 27 tie should be replayed from where the game stopped before it was abandoned by the home team.

Subject to the ratification of the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF),the LMC ruled on Thursday that Nembe would play their next three home games at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City while they were also fined N500,000 for the action of the home fans who encroached on the pitch immediately a penalty was awarded the away side in the dying minutes of the match.

LMC put League matches on hold

The League Management Company (LMC) has put on hold all fixtures scheduled for Match Day 26 following the withdrawal of services by the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA) from all Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) organized matches.

The NRA action has been predicated by the crisis in the NFF which culminated in the prevention of its key officials from attending the General Congress through the arrest and detention of the President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, the General Secretary, Barrister Musa Ahmadu and Chairman of the Technical Committee, Barrister Chris Green.

A statement from the LMC Chief Operating Officer, Salihu Abubakar read,“the decision is in the light of the notice of withdrawal of services by the Nigerian Referees Association which makes it impossible for us to organize games.”

The NRA notice signed by the Secretary-General, Prince Moroof Oyekunle Oluwa and addressed to the LMC Chairman read in part, “I have been directed by the Working Committee of the above named Association to inform you that, in view of uncertainty in the Nigeria Football Federation, the Nigeria Referees are hereby withdrawing its services with immediate effect from all matches organized by the NFF which includes the Nigeria Premier League, Nigeria National League, Nigeria NationWide League, Nigeria Women League and the Federation Cup pending when sanity is restored.”

The LMC said Clubs in the Glo Premier League and the sponsorship partners have already been advised of the development with clubs directed not to proceed to venues of their respective games until further communication.

Abubakar said:  “We have written to the General Secretary of the NFF on this development and have also informed the Clubs and our Sponsors.” He said the LMC desires that the crisis be amicably resolved soon to restore an enabling environment for the league to run smoothly.

“We are already running a tight fixture schedule and are hoping that this crisis is resolved soon so the season can be concluded in time for our clubs to prepare for continental registration and participation,” the statement concluded.

To this effect, only debt-free clubs as well as those who have complied with the N150, 000 monthly minimum wage will benefit from the Basic Award. Indebted clubs will also be prevented from operating in the mid-season transfer market.

Transfer: LMC places embargo on 17 clubs

The League Management Company (LMC) has slapped clubs that are yet to fulfill their financial obligations to players with transfer embargoes, amongst other heavy sanctions, kickOffNigeria.com reports.

The LMC revealed that only three of the 20 clubs in the topflight have been able to establish that they have met their obligation to players at the end of the first stanza of the season.

The three clubs are – Kano Pillars, Abia Warriors and Bayelsa United. While 17 other clubs have not responded to a July 18 deadline to establish proof of compliance.

The LMC had pursuant to Sections 8.1.1 and 9.46 of the 2013/14 Rules and Frameworks, which deals with clubs’ Finance and Players Remuneration respectively, through a letter dated July 10 directed all clubs to provide evidence of compliance to payment of players’ wages.

LMC wants ex-internationals in Premier League

The League Management Company has introduced an innovative scheme called the “Elite Players Project,” which aims to lure experienced ex-internationals back to the Glo Premier League.

KickoffNigeria reports that details of the scheme have already been listed in the 2013/14 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Framework and Rules, and were explained to all the 20 clubs in a circular signed by the LMC’s chief operating officer, Salihu Abubakar, on April 20.

The circular listed the major objective to include the improvement of professionalism in the NPFL by permitting clubs to register a maximum of two ex-international players in addition to the maximum 35 allowed in a season.

“The LMC hereby brings to the notice of all participating Clubs of the NPFL the commencement of its ‘Elite Players Project’. This project is pursuant to Rules 9.65, 9.67. 13.60.1, 13.60(viii) and 15.21 of the NPFL Framework and Rules 2013/14 season,” the circular read.

Further explaining its benefits, Abubakar said the scheme is expected to increase the level of experience in the Glo Premier League.

“It has been designed to increase and deepen players-experience pool of the league, bolster the morale and confidence of younger players in the NPFL, project the image of the league as a welcoming and conducive playing environment for the return of Nigeria’s finest crop of international professional footballers and boost the mass appeal of the league for commercialization.”

Similar initiatives already exist in South American leagues, as well as in South Africa and the MLS in the United States.
