Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has again been named the Player of the Season by his Italian Serie A club Atalanta.

He won the award for the previous season.

This past season, he scored a history-making hat-trick for Atalanta to win a first-ever European honour, the UEFA Europa League, at the expense of undefeated Bayer Leverkusen.

In the Serie A, Lookman, 26, netted 11 goals and provided eight assists in 31 appearances last season.

Atalanta will play in the UEFA Champions League in the coming season.

He was also joint leading scorer for the Super Eagles at the delayed 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire in February.

Lookman linked to  Man Utd, Chelsea Liverpool.

Man United, Liverpool and Chelsea are all interested in former Everton winger Ademola Lookman, according to reports in Italy.

Lookman struggled to make an impact during his first Premier League spell at Everton with just four goals in 48 appearances in all competitions.

A loan spell at RB Leipzig followed before the German side made the deal permanent in July 2019 and loan spells at Fulham and Leicester City followed before he finally found a home at Serie A side Atalanta.

Lookman has been brilliant over the last couple of seasons for Atalanta with the Nigeria international scoring 32 goals in 77 appearances for the Italian outfit.

The English-born 26-year-old scored a stunning hat-trick in the Europa League final in May as Atalanta beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 to win their first ever European trophy.

And his performances last season have attracted interest from the Premier League once again with Italian website Calciomercato claiming that Man Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea are ‘interested’ and ‘willing to make an offer close to €60m (£51m)’.

However, Atalanta ‘will retain Lookman at all costs’ if they sell Teun Koopmeiners, who is recovering from an injury which forced him to miss the European Championship.

Speaking after his Europa League final hat-trick, Lookman beamed: “One of the best nights of my life.

“Amazing performance from the team. We did it, we did it, we did it! I’ve not got many words to say but, yeah, fantastic.”

Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch was mesmerised by Lookman’s performance in the Europa League final and reckons the Nigerian is an “inspiration” to other players who’ve had a mixed start to their career.

Crouch said back in May: “Honestly, it’s probably an inspiration to many players who maybe lose their way at times, when he’s gone out on loan,” Crouch said of the London-born forward’s performance.

“When he might have arrived at Everton, a big club, and thought, “I’m gonna stay in the Premier League and ply my trade here”, and it’s not quite worked out. He’s had to go abroad.

“It’s been difficult at times for him and lots of players might have been head down.

“But he’s got himself out to Atalanta with a manager that wants to work with him, that seems to be able to get the best out of him.

“And I think it’s a credit to him to be able to bounce back from quite a few knock-backs and return to a Europa League final and be the difference-maker. It’s an incredible story.”

Fiorentina were UEFA Europa Conference League finalists following their 1-0 loss to Olympiacos last Wednesday but they found the right motivation to pip Atalanta at home to end the season eighth spot with 60 points.

Atalanta had already grabbed a UEFA Champions League ticket before the tie having mathematically projected to finish fourth with their 69 points. They could have ended the campaign in third spot with a home win.

It was Lookman that drew his team level six minutes later after Andreas Belotti had given Fiorentina a surprise sixth minute lead. He gave Giorgio Scalvini the pass for Atalanta’s second goal before he was Substituted in the 56th minute by Gianluca Scamacca.

Torunarigha played the entire duration of the game as Andrew Hjulsager’s 60th minute strike was enough to hand Gent the UEFA Europa Conference League ticket.

Tolu Arokodare was introduced five minutes after Genk conceded the lobe goal but the Nigerian was unable to change the outcome of the game. Collins Sor, the other Nigerian at Genk is still out injured.

Former Under 23 star, Ibrahim Sunusi made it three goals in two games after he scored in the first minute of CF Montreal’s 2-2 draw at Philadelphia Union.

Sunusi who once played for Nasarawa United and emerged as the NPFL highest scorer in the 2020-21 season has scored five goals from 15 games.

Lookman, Osimhem missing from Serie A ‘Ideal XI’

Super Eagles ‘ striking duo of  Ademola Lookman and  Victor Osimhen were frozen out of the novel  Ideal Serie A XI for the 2023-24 season  by writers  on the stable of the influential  Italian tabloid, Football Italia.

Despite Napoli’s  indifferent season as they were unable to defend their Serie A title and finishing  in 10th position, Osimhen  has  been among the goals during the 2023/24 campaign  soring a total of 17 goals and provided four assists in  32 appearances.

Lookman on the other hand is certainly the revelation of the season with Atalanta and apart from scoring a stunning  hat-trick that fired La Dea (The Goddess)to a historic Europa League  Cup  following a 3-0  whitewash of Bayer Leverkusen in the final last Wednesday, the  26-year-old  is equally credited with 10  goals  in the  Serie A .

Yet both Nigerian internationals were  over looked  by the  Football Italia’s team of expert that included  Susy Campanale; Lorenzo Bettoni; Apollo Heyes and Peter Young.

The quartet, meanwhile,  reportedly picked  several Bologna and Atalanta players in their ideal XIs, including Teun Koopmeiners and Riccardo Calafiori as well as Juventus‘ Gleison Bremer and Genoa‘s Albert Gudmundsson.

In its editorial, the Football Italia editors  stated inter alia: “Most of these players were also selected by Opta in their Best Serie A XI for 2023-24 based on stats, but notable names were omitted as well, such as Juventus’ forward Dusan Vlahovic, the second-best league scorer this season, and Italy star Gianluca Scamacca.”

Yet the omission of Osimhen and Lookman  would come  as a surprise to many  Nigerian football fans.

Super Eagles winger, Ademola Lookman bagged his 10th  league goal of the season for Atalanta in their 3-0 home win over Torino to ensure the Zebras return to the UEFA Champions League with a game to spare.

Lookman made it four goals in the last two games and in barely four days following his club’s second goal in the rout of Torino. Atalanta could finish the season in third spot by the time they play their outstanding game against Fiorentina on June 2nd.

The Nigerian has played 44 games in all competitions with 16 goals and seven assists.

In another Serie A tie, Napoli are in disappointing 10th  spot with 53 points. Victor Osimhen staged a return to the team after staying out for couple of days with a slight injury but he was unable to rescue his team from playing a goalless draw at home to Lecce.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles Goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye bagged his fifth clean sheet of the season as Udinese beat host Frosinone 1-0 to retain their topflight status. Okoye kept 21 games in the Serie A and another one game in the Coppa Italia.

Despite an unsuccessful campaign for Napoli Osimhen did not disappoint on a personal note scoring 17 goals from 30 games in the league and the UEFA Champions League.

In Turkey, Super Eagles defender, Bright Osayi-Samuel failed to win the Super Lig with Fenerbahce despite a valiant battle with Galatasaray who pipped them to the title with 102 points as 99 points had by Fenerbahce.

It was a scoring end of the season form for Bright Osayi-Samuel who netted his club’s fourth goal in their 6-0 home win over Istanbulspor. Samuel was substituted in the 73rd  minute as he finished the season with 24 games and four goals in all competitions. Fenerbahce and Samuel will play in the Champions League next season.

Paul Onuachu was not listed at all for Trabzonspor who ended the season in third spot with 67 points following a 4-2 win over Ankaragucu. Onuachu who is on loan from Southampton who bagged English Premier League return with a 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Wembley Stadium.

The Nigerian has played 25 games with 17 goals and four assist for Trabzonspor who are eager to retain his services for another season having qualified for the Europa League next season.

In another game, Super Fisayo Dele-Bashiru made it a scoring end to the season after he opened the scoring for Hatayspor in their 2-0 home win over Ibrahim Olawoyin’s Rizespor.

Bashiru ended the season with 36 games in the Super Lig with eight goals and three assists. He played three games and struck once in the Turkish Cup too. Hatayspor will play in the topflight again next season having finished the season in 15th  spot with 41 points. Former Nigeria Under 23 captain Okechukwu Azubuike was on the bench for Rizespor.

Super Eagles skipper, Kenneth Omeruo was an unused substitute in Kasimpasa’s 2-1 win over Besiktas. Kasimpasa narrowly missed out on European club competition having finished fifth with 56 points.

In Belgium, Club Brugge’s Raphael Onyedika won the Jupiler League at the expense of Union Saint Gilloise who finished second. They will play in the UEFA Champions League next season. Royal Antwerp ended the season with a 3-1 win over Anderlecht. Alhassan Yusuf was not listed for action by Royal Antwerp.

In another game, Tolu Arokodare lost 2-0 with Genk against Union Saint Gilloise.

  • Lookman on Premier League clubs radar

Lookman on Premier League clubs radar

The Times has reported that Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman could be on the move this summer.

Clubs in Germany and the Premier League are said to have been closely monitoring the forward, who has three years left on his contract. A fee of around about $38m (£30m/€35m) has been suggested

Lookman delivered a truly remarkable performance in the Europa League final in Dublin. He scored a hat-trick which ensured the Serie A side won its first trophy since 1963, with Bayer Leverkusen suffering a first loss of what remains a remarkable campaign.

A transfer would continue an already nomadic career. Despite being only 26 years old, Lookman has already represented Charlton Athletic, Everton, RB Leipzig, Fulham, Leicester City and Atalanta. Another club may join that list in 2024/25.

Liverpool supporters will not need reminding of Lookman’s talents. He scored the winner for Leicester when it inflicted a rare defeat upon the Reds’ class of 2021/22.

With his Europa League heroics raising his profile considerably, it would not be a surprise to see him back in the Premier League soon.

  • FROM ZERO TO HERO: Why  Europa League  star boy Lookman chose Nigeria over England

FROM ZERO TO HERO: Why  Europa League  star boy Lookman chose Nigeria over England

Though  he has  been among the goals in the Serie A  in this campaign,  Nigeria international  Ademola Lookman  was the unlikely hero  going into  Wednesday’s  Europa League Finale in Dublin .

But the names on the lips of everyone  in the end was that  of the Wandsworth- born  lad  who only in 2022  switched   allegiance to play  for Nigeria   rather than England.

Lookman  undoubtedly  made the Europa  League Final  his own after his  stunning yet historic hat trick  saw Atalanta  earned  their Holy Grail by not only winning their first European silverware  but the first Italian  team  to win the trophy since it the old European Cup Winners Cup was fused together  with the UEFA Cup in 1999.

Named Hankook Player of the Match after his hat-trick won the UEFA Europa League final in Dublin for Atalanta, the UEFA Technical Observer panel’s assessment of the Nigerian’s performance said it all: “For obvious reasons and his all-round enthusiasm and energy. Really sharp and his execution was spot on.”

Lookman anticipated Davide Zappacosta’s ball across the box to open the scoring, then hit a brilliant individual second on 26 minutes. A threat all night, he became the first player to score a Europa League final treble after Gianluca Scamacca played him through to smash in Atalanta’s third on 75 minutes.

“I’ve always had the confidence in my ability to create, to score goals, to help my team-mates,” the 26-year-old said in the post-match press conference. “In the past two years I’ve been able to take my game to a whole new level. Maybe [my best form] could have come earlier, but it’s come now. This is just the beginning. I hope for more nights like this and to just keep getting better and better.”

It is the sixth time that a player has scored a hat-trick in the final of a major UEFA club competition. Ferenc Puskás hit four for Real Madrid against Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960 European Cup final, and then hit three against Benfica in the final of the 1962 competition.

Alfredo Di Stéfano also scored three for Madrid in that 1960 final, while Pierino Prati scored three against Ajax for Milan in the 1969 showpiece. The only previous hat-trick in a UEFA Cup or Europa League final was scored by Jupp Heynckes, as Mönchengladbach beat Twente in the 1975 decider.

Lookman is only the third Nigerian player to find the net in a UEFA Cup or Europa League final, after Alex Iwobi in Arsenal’s 4-1 loss to Chelsea in 2019 and Joe Aribo, who scored Rangers’ goal as they lost on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt two years ago. He is also only the third Nigerian to appear in a final win in the competition, after Taribo West (Inter Milan, 1998) and Chidi Odiah (CSKA Moskva, 2005).

After the game, he said that playing international football for Nigeria had helped him to raise his game. “It’s incredible [to play for Nigeria],” he explained. “The support and the love I get back home from the people is unbelievable. It gives me the motivation to evolve in different areas – as a person, not just in my game.”

For the majority of his life and career, though, he lived in England after being born in Wandsworth, south London. With the level of form he’s shown recently, he’d have been a strong contender for a place in the Three Lions’ set-up as Gareth Southgate’s side prepare for Euro 2024 – but he’s now ineligible for selection after he chose to switch national allegiances in 2022.

Speaking about his decision to play for the Super  Eagles   ahead of the three Lions ,  Lookman told The Times  that it was entirely his choice and one of the biggest reasons for the move was his desire to play international football.

“It was nothing to do with my parents because they wouldn’t really tell me to go here or there. I wanted to build a career internationally. The decision was something that I thought about for a long time before making it. To play for Nigeria is an honour first of all and the best decision I ever made. I’m happy I made it.”

Born and raised in England, Lookman represented the Three Lions at several different youth levels before he made the switch to Nigeria. First, he played five times for the Under-19 side, before he moved up to the Under-20 team. It was here that he saw the most success, winning the Under-20 World Cup with England in 2017. He also scored five goals for the nation in 15 appearances at this level.

Following this success, he moved up to the Under-21 level, and played a further 11 times for the nation, scoring one more goal. He made his final appearance for England at any level in 2019 and, after a period away from international football, he decided to make that switch to Nigeria’s senior team in 2022, and it’s all paid off for him so far.

After deciding to switch to Nigeria in 2022, Lookman told CafOnline that the move was a natural one. Being raised by Nigerian parents, he had already built a sense of community with the nation, and it didn’t feel like an unusual switch for him.

“Both my parents are Nigerians, and I’ve always seen this [representing Nigeria] as a possibility. I came to Nigeria, frequently when I was much younger. I am familiar with the people and have built up a family here, so the switch from England to Nigeria is not an unusual one for me. I am glad I made the switch. I hope to create great and memorable memories.”

He certainly delivered on that front too, with some very impressive showings for Nigeria. In fact, Lookman was crucial to the nation’s strong showing during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations which saw them go all the way to the final before falling short against Cote d’Ivoire.

He scored three really important goals during the tournament and while his side didn’t lift the trophy, he came away an even bigger star for them. The decision to play for Nigeria instead of England is one that has paid off for the forward.

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman will miss Atalanta’s Serie A game against Sassuolo on Saturday because of an injury, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 26-year-old forward returned to Atalanta on Wednesday to link up with the team as they push for European football in the Serie A.

However, in a new development, Lookman would have to wait a little before returning to action for Atalanta.
