Brilliant Lookman relishes superb form with Atalanta

After  scoring  the winner and also providing an assist for Atalanta to beat Fiorentina 3-2 in the Italian Serie A yesterday, Super Eagles striker, Ademola Lookman insists he is ‘enjoying’ his football after a tumultuous summer

It was a much-needed win for the UEFA Europa League holders after they lost their previous two games – 2-1 at Torino and 4-0 at champions Inter Milan.

It was a hugely entertaining game in Bergamo, as La Dea were twice trailing only to claw their way back to lead 3-2 at half-time.

Lookman was making his first Serie A appearance of the season after pulling out due to transfer interest from big clubs, but now that he is back in the fold, he made an immediate difference with an assist and a goal for Atalanta.

Mateo Retegui and De Ketelaere completed the victory, with Lucas Martinez Quarta and Moise Kean on target for Fiorentina.

“Happy to be back in front of our fans and play football here. Enjoying it, we’ve got a strong squad this season and happy to play, so we go on,” Lookman told DAZN when asked about his rather turbulent summer.

The Europa League winners will be up against Premier League contenders Arsenal in the Champions League on Thursday, a very special game for Lookman, who was born in London.

“We’re very pleased to be in the Champions League this season. We deserved that and have to demonstrate it. We want to show the same drive and mentality that we had today to come back from behind.”

In a related development, Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini acknowledged that the Champions League match against Arsenal will be a difficult challenge on Thursday, noting that his team had not yet reached peak form.

“It’s not just their aerial power, the way they run, move the ball and have fantastic dynamism,” the 66-year-old told DAZN. “Arsenal are a great reference point in England, they dominated the Premier League last season along with Manchester City and Liverpool.”

“We have never played against them and I think they will be a big test for us because of their intensity, quality and pace. We’re not used to teams with those characteristics, this could be a problem for us.”

Gasperini expressed frustration with the recent international break, noting that it had complicated efforts to prepare the team.

“Having the break for international duty was not helpful, as so many of them left again straight away,” he said.

“I think first of all this team needs to find solidity, get those mechanisms running smoothly.”

Nigerian may play for Atalanta  against Inter tomorrow_

Super Eagles ace striker Ademola Lookman is expected  to return to the Atalanta squad for tomorrow’s exciting Serie A clash away to Inter while  Gian Piero Gasperini may have to do without summer recruit Nicolo Zaniolo.

According to updates from TMW, Lookman has returned to training after a brief transfer saga involving Paris Saint-Germain.

The Nigeria international had been tipped with a move to Paris earlier in August, which led to his temporary removal from the first-team group, much like what happened with Teun Koopmeiners.

The PSG links have since cooled off, and Lookman is now most likely to stay on with La Dea for the 2024-25 season. He is back in first-team training and could be involved with the Matchday squad against Inter tomorrow.

Zaniolo, however, has picked up a muscular strain in his left adductor, which makes him a doubt ahead of the trip to San Siro.

The former Roma attacker, who has been given Atalanta’s no.10 shirt, made his competitive debut for La Dea off the bench in their 2-1 loss to Torino over the weekend.

His case, it has also been reported, is being handled by the Europa League winners.

Atalanta in disarray over Lookman’s link to PSG

Coach Gian Piero Gasperini has admitted that the potential move of  Europa League final hat-trick hero Ademola Lookman to Paris Germain coupled with Teun Koopmeiners’ to Juventus  have seemingly thrown the La Dea (The Goddess) into disarray.

Both Lookman and Koopmeiners  were unavailable  during Atlanta’s 4-0 thrashing of Lecce in their Serie A opener  and Gasperini  confessed  that  the  on-going transfer upheaval surrounding  the two players  has unsettled  the Europa Cup  holder.

“No-one expected to be in this situation,” Gasperini told Sky Sport after Monday’s match.

“I have to play it by ear right now… I don’t know what’s going to happen in the coming 10 days but our job is to build as much as we can.”

Before Monday’s  win  against Lecce, Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi  expressed  wiliness

reconciliation with the want-away pair, adding the ‘players remain Atalanta’s properties.’

“Our idea is that for the first time in our history to not let our big players go,” Percassi told Sky Sport. “We can’t wait for this transfer window to close.”

As earlier reported, PSG has made an offer of 4.5 million euros  for the Nigeria international.

Meanwhile, Premier League heavyweights, Liverpool and Arsenal are reportedly mulling over a late move for red-hot Lookman.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football,  Lookman is the subject of interest from Liverpool.

The Reds are weighing up a late move for the Atalanta attacker as they look to complete their first signing of the summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, Arsenal is also “informed on the situation” surrounding the 26-year-old versatile forward.

The Nigerian has resurrected his stuttering career since joining Atalanta from RB Leipzig in August 2022. A native of London, he spent his formative years in England and represented the country in age-group football but has chosen Nigeria as his national side.

Liverpool’s interest in Lookman is understandable. The Reds are keen on signing a versatile attacker in the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding the long-term futures of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Luis Diaz.

So, Lookman is a viable target for Liverpool.

As for Arsenal, the report has claimed that intermediaries are keeping them in the loop on Lookman’s situation.

The productive attacker can be a top-notch addition to the Arsenal squad due to his ability to play across the frontline.

However, Arsenal must step up to beat Liverpool to Lookman’s signature, with the Merseyside club mulling over a late move for the 26-year-old Europa League winner. It will be interesting to see where he plies his trade next season.

PSG table N7.9b per-season for Lookman

    • Atalanta determined to keep Nigerian ace

French giants, Paris  Saint Germaine (PSG) has  reportedly tabled a staggering 4.5 million euros  offer  per-season to acquire the service of Nigeria International from striker  Ademola Lookman  from his  Serie A outfit, Atalanta.

With a conservative estimate  of about N1768.72005 to one euros,  it means  the former Fulham striker would be smiling home with about N7,959,240, 225 per season  and his total annual package  can even be richer  after match bonuses and image rights are factored  into the deal.

Already, Lookman’s market value is put in the region of €40.00m

Italian news outlets, Calciomercato  has reportedly hinted that :“PSG have offered the player €4.5 million per season, which is a big upgrade on the €1.8 million per season that he earns at La Dea.

“ For now, no contact has been made with Atalanta but they want a fee of at least €40 million to sell the ex-Fulham player, who seems quite interested in a move to Paris.

In what  can be regarded as  a dramatic twist of fate , PSG  had long been linked to Lookman’s compatriot  and  Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen  but news emerged on Sunday  that  the Parisians  have already made contact  with  representatives  of Lookman.

Lookman who was Atalanta hero in their Europa Cup victory last season  against Bayer Leverkusen, has since demanded a transfer  to PSG.

He  was  promptly omitted  from  his side’s  4-0 thrashing of Lecce in their Serie  A opener  on Monday.

Yet Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi has been quoted as saying  that the club is determined to keep all its last season’s key actors  when pressed  about the ongoing transfer speculation surrounding Lookman  and Teun Koopmeiners who is eyeing a move to Juventus.

“Last year, we had the desire to keep all our star players who were protagonists of an extraordinary season with us,” Percassi reportedly told Sky Italia. “We are calm. For the first time in our history, the idea was not to let anyone leave.

“All players are Atalanta players and will only leave on our terms.”

The 26-year-old Lookman joined the Serie A side in 2022 on a four-year  till June 2026 but it’s becoming increasingly clear that Atalanta  would  not let   that the Nigerian international  go on cheap.

Lookman  who turns 27 in October, scored a hat-trick in the Europa League Final against Bayer Leverkusen last season. He was purchased  from RB Leipzig in 2022 for €9.35m plus bonuses.

Born and raised in London, he scored a total 32 goals with 18 assists in 79 competitive appearances for Atalanta, most recently the UEFA Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Lookman, who has played 23 times for Nigeria, scored three goals in his country’s run to African Cup of Nations final over January and February.

Atalanta hero Lookman demands transfer to PSG

Super Eagle striker Ademola Lookman was left out  of Atalanta’s squad for their Serie A opener at Lecce  yesterday amid  rumours  about the Europa League hero’s possible move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Lookman became an Atalanta legend in May when his stunning hat-trick downed German champions Bayer Leverkusen and won the traditionally provincial club their first ever European trophy, a first major honour of any sort since 1963.

However the 26-year-old was not included in the squad for Atalanta’s trip south, where Gian Piero Gasperini’s side will begin their league campaign this  evening.

Italian media have widely reported that Lookman’s representatives have told Atalanta of PSG’s interest as the club go through an eventful summer transfer window.

Koopmeiners was also not named in the 23-man squad for the Lecce match but Atalanta have as yet refused to agree terms with Juve who are rebuilding their team for new coach Thiago Motta.

Ndidi tips Lookman for CAF Player of the Year

Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi believes Ademola Lookman will win this year’s CAF Africa Footballer of the Year award, edging out Victor Osimhen, Soccernet.ng reports.

Osimhen, the current holder, faces tough competition from Lookman for the title.

Lookman has had a standout season with Atalanta in Serie A, playing a key role in their success.

He scored a hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, securing Atalanta’s first-ever European trophy.

His performances earned him Atalanta’s Best Player of the Season award, contributing 27 goals across all competitions.

Lookman was also instrumental at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, where he helped Nigeria reach the final. His impressive display included three goals and an assist, earning him a spot in the Team of the Tournament.

He stated:  “In all honesty, I think Ademola (Lookman) stands a better chance to winning it. Though both he and Osimhen have done well for their clubs, but Ademola stands a better chance.”

Lookman recently won the Best African International Footballer award at the Ghana Football Awards in Accra.

  • LOOKMAN: I owe a lot to my childhood coaches

LOOKMAN: I owe a lot to my childhood coaches

Fresh from receiving his latest award and accolade in neighboring West Africa country, Ghana, Nigeria international and Atalanta of Italy striker Ademola Lookman says he always had confidence in his ability to make an impact in at the highest level, though many don’t give him the credits he deserved.

Addressing an array of top African football icons in Accra, venue of Monday’s award ceremony by organizers of Ghana Football Awards, after he was named Africa’s Best Player, he said, he was elated by the recognition and award.

“It is an honour to receive this award and it gladdens my heart. Indeed, I don’t know how to thank you.

“What I have achieved this year is not for me alone but for the whole of my team from the manager to the backroom staffs and my colleagues on the field.

“I know what I can do and I have not stopped believing in myself. It has not been easy and I have suffered rejection before but I did not give up on myself. I also thank all those who did not give up on me.”

Lookman’s historic hat-trick in the Europa League final may have been largely responsible for the accolade, and more that will follow, but he said, his confidence was built by the games, and goals in Italy.

Truly, the journeyman has had his ups and downs-mostly downs-till now.

Lookman arrived in Ireland-venue of the Europa League grand showpiece-having lost the AFCON final with Nigeria and the Coppa Italia final with Atalanta already in 2024.

“They always say third time lucky,” he said with a grin and the match ball-tucked under his right arm after a career-defining night as Xabi Alonso’s all-conquering Bayer Leverkusen were outplayed and upstaged in Ireland.

Atalanta – nicknamed La Dea [The Goddess] – have their crowning moment and only a second trophy in their 116-year history – six decades on from lifting the Coppa Italia in 1963.

Lookman’s hat-trick was the sixth to be scored in a major UEFA final

Alonso had no response to the suffocating press.

His forlorn defender Edmond Tapsoba will have sleepless nights all summer long, exposed by the pace of Lookman, who was hoisted into the air by his team-mates two years to the day since his final Premier League appearance for Leicester against Southampton.

Defender Sead Kolasinac said: “Before the game, I went into [Berat] Djimsiti’s room, and we both had the feeling he could decide the game tonight. We know all about his quality.

“I don’t know how many times after the game I told him, ‘thank you’ because he gave us the trophy with his hat-trick. We’re super happy to have him in our team.”

    The Nearly Man

In England, he had been classed as the nearly man, bouncing around loan spells.

    It was a nomadic existence.

But on one night in Dublin, Lookman scored three times as many goals as he managed in three Premier League seasons with Everton.

That solitary strike came in his debut against Manchester City – a memorable 4-0 win to inflict the biggest defeat, still, in Pep Guardiola’s managerial career.

His is a tale of sporting perseverance.

    Deprived background

Lookman admitted that he came from a deprived area of U.K, learning the game in the cage. There is no doubt that his environment and cage football toughen him.

Growing up on his Wandsworth estate and having gone to school in Peckham, he has carried those memories of hardship with him.

In a documentary ‘South of the River’, he told of how he would eat at his friends’ houses after playing football, knowing there was no food on the table at home.

The struggles of his mother gave him “added fuel in the fire” burning inside him to make it as a professional footballer.

In a period of complete chaos at the Addicks a decade ago, it was the club’s former striker Jason Euell who made sure Lookman was brought from his humble origins to the Valley.

Euell oversaw his journey from U18s to U23s and onto Charlton’s first team and had a huge influence on his development.

Many have played a role in Lookman’s route to stardom from playing on the streets and in the cages of South London and the man himself admit it has been a difficult journey.

Having struggled to shine at Everton and RB Leipzig after leaving Charlton, he had loan spells at Fulham and Leicester before finding consistency in Italy under Gasperini.

Lookman has scored 30 goals in two seasons at Atalanta, but Manager Gian Peiro Gasparini admitted he has been surprised by the player’s development in Bergamo.

He said: “We had a senior manager at Atalanta who had worked at Leicester and saw that we had the opportunity to bring him in.

“We thought he was a possible useful player for us, but no-one ever imagined that he could really make this much progress.

“He wasn’t overly-prolific in England but I changed his position a little bit and played him in a slightly more attacking role – and now he has achieved something that will remain in the annals of football history.”

Lookman said perseverance and hard work has brought him this far.

“The past few years I’ve been able to take my game to a new level on a more consistent basis. Maybe it would have come earlier.

“But it’s come now and I’m pleased with the progress I’ve made. This is just the beginning and I hope for more nights like this and to get better and better. That’s the key.”

One of his former youth coaches spoke in moving terms to TNT Sports at full-time, saying: “We’ve been dreaming about this for a long time since he was a kid at Waterloo.

“I’m so pleased for Ade. He’s a quiet lad who works hard. Sometimes, he’s misunderstood because of his quietness but he always wants to learn, get better and to reach the top.”

To cap it all, Lookman is The Player of the Month for May-June and he has also been just crowned Player of the Season, and the new poster boy for the closing issue on the four Nerazzurri scorers.

In terms of goal contribution, the 2023/24 season has been a two-tier campaign as it enshrined both the confirmation and the consecration of the black-and-blue forward.

“This is just the beginning for me. I’m eager to do more and I’m encouraged to give myself more for my fans and for the club and all those have kept faith in me. I can’t let them down. I can’t let myself down,” added the quiet, soft spoken player whose on field statistics speak loud and clear.

Lookman  crowned  Africa’s Best in Ghana

Nigeria attacker Ademola Lookman has been named the Best African International Footballer at the Ghana Football Awards in Accra.

The Atalanta star got  the award after a remarkable season with Nigeria’s Super Eagles and his Italian club. Lookman scored a hat-trick to help Atalanta beat Bayer Leverkusen and win the UEFA Europa League last season.

He outperformed Victor Boniface and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmund Tapsoba to clinch the title. Lookman succeeds his compatriot and Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, who won last year after leading his team to the Serie A title and later secured the CAF Africa’s Best Player award.

Lookman is now a strong contender for Africa’s top individual football award this year.

The former Fulham and Leicester City player had a standout year, guiding Nigeria to the Africa Cup of Nations final and scoring a hat-trick in the Europa League final.
