BROTHERS AT WAR: Lookman’s Atalanta  clash with Chukwueze’s Milan in Bergamo

As Atalanta take on AC Milan tonight with Serie A’s top spot in their sights and a growing belief that this could be their year for unprecedented Scudetto glory, all eyes would be on  Ademola Lookman  and  visiting Samuel Chukwueze  as the  Nigerian duo face-off in what  should be an interesting matchup.

Chukwueze should be in the frame in Milan’s starting line-up following his superb outing during the week In the Coppa Italia match when he grabbed a brace  in the 6-1 thrashing of Sassuolo.

On the strength  of his  eye-catching showing against Sassuolo, Chukwueze  is now  been regarded  as a breath of fresh  air as coach Paulo Fonseca is bent on  pulling  all the stops  to  rejuvenate  the Rossoneri.

Italian  Pink Paper, Gazzetta dello Sport,  this week  suggested  that  Chukwueze can be a ‘new purchase’ for Fonseca, adding the Nigerian winger ‘must find continuity, and keep up the pace, performing to similar levels on the regular, rather than the occasional’

But it remains to be seen if the former  wing wonders with Villarreal  can put up a big show like he did in  Tuesday’s  Coppa Italia match against Atalanta where his compatriot, Lookman is already a  consistent performer.

A point behind current leaders Napoli, Atalanta are gunning for a club record-equalling ninth straight win in Italy’s top flight and are, for the first time in their history, genuine title challengers.

Atalanta have never finished higher than third in Serie A, which they did three seasons in a row between 2019 and 2021 with a thrilling team featuring an all-action attack of Josip Ilicic, Duvan Zapata and Papu Gomez.

However the current line-up, still on a high from last year’s historic Europa League triumph and the division’s top scorers with 36 goals, looks capable of going even further in Gian Piero Gasperini’s ninth season as coach.

Atalanta have won 11 of 12 matches in all competitions – drawing the other – since the start of October and after Monday night’s 2-0 success at Roma, Claudio Ranieri said they were “ready, really ready” to fight for the league crown.

“Winning the Europa League really helped those who took part in it grow as players, and a lot of new faces have arrived who are also developing. That’s the reason for these results,” said Gasperini after his team hit Young Boys for six last month.

A win over Milan would put Atalanta top at least for two days as Napoli host Lazio on Sunday night, and equal a Serie A wins record established in 2020 when Bergamo was the European epicentre of the Covid-19 pandemic.

That year Atalanta stunned Europe by reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where two late goals denied them a win over mega-rich Paris Saint-Germain and a spot in the last four.

Since then, Atalanta have kept building on and off the pitch, with the latest iteration of “Gaspball” being played out in the now fully refurbished Gewiss Stadium, one of the few grounds in Serie A owned by the club and not a public body.

Atalanta, a traditionally small, provincial club with fanatical support, host Real Madrid on Tuesday and have come so far under Gasperini and the guidance of the local Percassi family that few would be surprised by a win.

First up, however, are Milan, who are 10 points behind Napoli with a game in hand but have won their last three matches against the modest opposition of Slovan Bratislava, Empoli and Sassuolo, netting 12 times in the process.

If Milan are to get anything from Bergamo, Tijjani Reijnders will be key as the Netherlands midfielder is in hot form and the one constant performer in Paulo Fonseca’s otherwise inconsistent side.

Reijnders smashed in his seventh goal of the season on Tuesday night as a largely second-string Milan outfit hammered Serie B leaders Sassuolo 6-1 in the Italian Cup, his third in two games after also netting a brace against Empoli last weekend.

The 26-year-old has a good claim to be Serie A’s best midfielder right now and will be up against it with Ederson and Marten de Roon making Atalanta fans forget Teun Koopmeiners’ big-money move to Juventus.

Elsewhere, champions Inter Milan kick off the weekend’s action tonight  against Parma at the San Siro, Simone Inzaghi’s side set to play for the first time since last weekend’s match at Fiorentina was called off following Edoardo Bove’s harrowing collapse.

Both Inter and Fiorentina, who host Cagliari on Sunday, are three points behind Atalanta with a game in hand following a traumatic evening which reminded fans of former captain Davide Astori’s sudden death in 2018.

The Viola await an official diagnoses of what caused midfielder Bove, who is still in intensive care at Florence’s Careggi hospital, to lose consciousness.

Lookman,Ekong nominated for FIFA Best Awards

The stocks of Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman have continued to rise after he was short-listed for the FIFA Best Attacker of 2024, while William Troost-Ekong was nominated for the defenders’ category.

Other prominent African players listed are Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Soufiane Rahimi who were bronze medal winners at the Paris 2024 Olympics; and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon.

In the FIFA Best XI, there are 11 goalkeepers. One of them will be successful. There are 22 each for the defense, midfield, and attack.

Lookman is in contention for the Best Attacker award. The Atalanta forward is among 22 players shortlisted for the category. Lookman, who finished 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings, has been recognized for his outstanding performances at club level.

Troost-Ekong features in the defenders’ category, where 22 players are vying for the prestigious award. The Super Eagles’ center-back earned his spot after being named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Paul Onuachu is a nominee for the FIFA Puskás Award, which honours the best goal scored in the past year. Onuachu’s stunning strike for Trabzonspor against Konyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig on November 10, 2023, earned him a place among 11 nominees.

Meanwhile, Asisat Oshoala, now playing for Bay FC in the NWSL, is nominated for the FIFA Marta Award. She will compete against 10 other players for the prestigious title, which recognizes the best women’s footballers globally.

Her goal for Barcelona Femini in a UEFA Women’s Champions League duel with Benfica last year is one of the goals nominated for the Marta Award.

Lookman chases more UCL goals  at Young Boys

Nigeria’s rave-of-the-moment, Ademola Lookman , has expectedly been listed  for Atalanta’s UEFA Champions League  match  away to Young Boys Bern .

Coach Gian Piero Gasperini  yesterday  named his 22-man squad list for tonight’s away  game to  the Swiss  side at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern.

Defenders Sead Kolasinac and Berat Djimsiti  are back in the Atalanta squad after missing Saturday’s win over Parma due to injuries.

On the other hand, Giorgio Scalvini will rest in Bergamo after making his first appearance in over six months against Parma last weekend.

The Italian centre-back suffered a cruciate ligament injury in the final match of the 2023-24 Serie A campaign, missing last summer’s Euros with the Italian national team.

Atalanta are 9th  on the Champions League table  and should presumably  be able to cope with  the less illustrious  opponents  who are presently in the 34th position on the log.

This could   yet offers  the 27-year-old Lookman  to add to  his too goal  tally in the Champions League. The Super  Eagles  already has seven goals in the Italian Serie A  and was among the goals on Saturday in the 3-1 win against  Parma  to yet again underline his rich vein of form.

Already,  an Italian outlet has already  predicted an away  win for  Lookman’s Atalanta.

  • PSG renew chase for Lookman

    PSG renew chase for Lookman

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly rekindled their interest in Atalanta’s star forward Ademola Lookman, while the Italian club is working on extending his contract.

This development comes after Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini recently expressed his hope that the transfer market wouldn’t come calling for Lookman in January.

Calciomercato report how the Nigerian international had previously trained separately at Zingonia while awaiting a potential move to PSG. However, the expected offer of at least 60 million euros never materialized, leading Lookman to remain with Atalanta. Since then, he has shown his commitment to the club, contributing significantly with 8 goals and 5 assists across all competitions.

PSG, who have been monitoring Lookman for some time, are now reportedly prepared to meet Atalanta’s valuation, potentially offering up to 65 million euros. This substantial bid could prove tempting for Atalanta, especially considering their depth in attacking options, including De Ketelaere, Zaniolo, Retegui, and the soon-to-return Scamacca.

However, Lookman’s unique ability to dribble past defenders and single-handedly decide matches makes him a valuable asset for Atalanta. The club’s ambitions have grown following their impressive goal-scoring record in Serie A and their strong performance in the Champions League.

Atalanta are not inclined to offer any discounts on Lookman’s transfer fee. Instead, they are preparing to offer him a contract extension with an increased salary. This move sends a clear message to potential suitors: whether in January or June, any club looking to sign Lookman will need to meet Atalanta’s full valuation without compromise.

Defenders Olaoluwa Aina and Bruno Onyemaechi are also listed, while France-based defender Gabriel Osho will hope to play his first competitive game for fatherland, after his inability to honour a first call-up in the summer due to injury.

The Super Eagles will fly directly to Abidjan on 11 November, for the confrontation with the Cheetahs of Benin Republic at the Stade Felix-Houphouet-Boigny on Thursday, 14th  November, before traveling down to Uyo for the final qualifying game against the Amavubi of Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Monday, 18th November.

Currently top of their Group D, the Super Eagles will be certain of a place in the final tournament if they get a point against the Cheetahs, which will take then to 11 points, and with only final-day opponents Rwanda capable of catching up with them on points. However, with a current tally of seven goals for and none against (following the CAF Disciplinary Board’s award of three points and three goals for the botched Matchday 4 encounter against Libya), the Super Eagles stand head and shoulders above the Amavubi, who have one-goal deficit and five points in their favour going into the final two match-days.

Nigeria’s rave of the moment in the Serie A, Ademola Lookman, said being the only African in the  list of 30 players listed for this year’s Ballon d’Or award  has a special feel, adding  his stunning hat trick  in the 3-0 demolishing of Leverkusen in the last Europa Cup final has already etched him a legendary status with Atalanta.

Ademola Lookman  expressed his astonishment at the nomination in an interview  with France Football, the publication responsible for organizing and presenting the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.

“It’s a crazy thing. And being the only African on the list makes it even more special. I’m proud of it. It’s an honour, knowing where I come from,” said the Nigerian international, who played a pivotal role in Atalanta’s Europa League triumph, scoring a hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen.

Reflecting on his achievements, Lookman shared a touching moment with his coach: “I was very struck by the fact that Gasperini told me a few days later that I had become part of football history. It’s true, it’s an honour, but I worked hard to get here.”

Atalanta and Super Eagles attacker, Ademola Lookman scored once and also provided an assist as his Italian team secured a 3-2 win over hard fighting Fiorentina in a Serie A tie played yesterday in Bergamo.

Lookman had just ended his exile having tried to force a move away from Atalanta and playing in his first league game of season the Nigerian first assisted with his club’s second equaliser before he notched the third goal in the stoppage time of the first half. It turned out to be the winning goal.

The win, their second in the ongoing season takes them to the eighth spot with six points from four games.

In Germany, Frank Onyeka marked his debut for Augsburg with an assist in their 3-1 home win over St Pauli. The Eagles midfield enforcer was on for 83 minutes as the win guaranteed Augsburg their first victory of the season after three games. They are 11th with four points.

Fenerbahce move to the first spot with 13 points from five games as a result of the away win but they have played a game more than second placed Galatasaray who just signed Super Eagles’ Victor Osimhen on loan from Napoli. Kasimpasa are 10th  with five points from five games.

In Scotland, Glasgow Rangers pipped Dundee 1-0 through Tom Lawrence’s seventh minute strike. The goal assist was from Cyriel Dessers. It was his first assist of the season to complement his three goals from five league games.

Dessers’ compatriot and club mate, Leon Balogun was an unused substitute. He has played four games. Rangers are third with 10 points from five games.
