Lookman notifies Atalanta of transfer decision

Nigeria international striker Ademola Lookman has reportedly informed Atalanta management that he plans to leave this summer.

According to TMW (Tutto Mecarto Web)Lookman and La Dea management have a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ about leaving a decision to the player at season’s end over his future.

The striker is now set to leave, knowing he has interest from bigger clubs from across Europe with Barcelona and Newcastle United reportedly  among major clubs watching Lookman’s situation.

Aside it had also been speculated that  both Napoli and Manchester United  are likely to bid  for the  former Everton striker.

Over the weekend, GIVEMESPORT also claimed that Nottingham Forest have set their sights on attempting to win the race for Lookman after the Atalanta star has worked his way onto the radar at the City Ground as preparations are made for the summer transfer window.

The Tricky Trees showed plenty of ambition ahead of the campaign getting underway, with Elliot Anderson proving to be the most expensive acquisition thanks to completing a £35million switch from Newcastle United, and boss Nuno Espirito Santo wants to make further adjustments to his squad as he closes in on securing Champions League qualification.

Although Jota Silva has made an impact on the flanks since joining in a deal worth an initial £5.9million from Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes in August, Nottingham Forest have pinpointed Lookman as a potential standout recruit as they aim to build on a memorable campaign which could still end with FA Cup glory.

The 27-year-old Nigeria international has been described as ‘world-class’ by commentator Matteo Bonetti, as a result of his performances in Serie A, and the Tricky Trees are eyeing an opportunity to pounce even though the likes of Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi have been shining on the flanks.

Reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain are not on course to enter the race for Lookman’s signature due to landing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli during the winter transfer window, GMS sources have learned, but Nottingham Forest will still face competition for an agreement.

GMS sources have been told that Nottingham Forest could face competition from Tottenham Hotspur if they up the ante in their pursuit as the north Londoners have looked at recruiting Lookman in the past, while Aston Villa have been credited with an interest even though they are still finalising their summer plans.

The latter are prioritising a permanent deal for Marco Asensio, who is currently on loan from PSG, and they also need to decide whether to trigger a £40million option to buy Marcus Rashford from Manchester United after he has been enjoying plenty of game time under boss Unai Emery since his mid-season arrival.

Serie A heavyweights Juventus are another side who could attempt to come out on top in the battle for Lookman’s services, GMS sources understand, but Nottingham Forest want to make waves in the transfer market and have set their sights on tempting him away from Atalanta in the coming months.

Although GMS sources recently revealed that Ola Aina is open-minded about staying at the City Ground despite gaining interest from Manchester City and Chelsea, which will come as a significant boost for the Tricky Trees, they are keen to welcome fresh faces to the Midlands during the summer.

This could increase the chances of Lookman making a high-profile move to either the Premier League or La Liga.

Lookman makes Serie A Team of Week 26

Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman has been named in the WhoScored Serie A Team of the Week for Gameweek 26 after his impressive performance helped Atalanta secure a convincing 5-0 win over Empoli on Sunday.

The game was largely dominated by Atalanta with Emmanuel Gyasi’s own goal in the 27th  minute giving them an early lead. Mateo Retegui doubled the lead shortly after, before Ademola Lookman scored a brace, netting goals in the 43rd  and 55th  minute to increase their advantage. Davide Zappacosta sealed the win with a goal in the 74th  minute.

The WhoScored Serie A Team of the Week for Gameweek 26 features several Atalanta players, thanks to their convincing win, however, Ademola Lookman was the highest-rated player (9.43).

The team includes Vanja Milinkovic-Savic (Torino) as goalkeeper, with Raoul Bellanova (Atalanta), Stefan Posch (Atalanta), Berat Djimsiti (Atalanta), and Angelino (Roma) forming the backline.

The midfield trio consists of Bryan Christante (Roma), Matias Soulé, and Ademola Lookman while the attack features Lautaro Martinez (Inter Milan), Mateo Retegui (Atalanta), and Eldor Shomurodov (Roma).

Atalanta’s dominant win was crucial as it propelled them to within three points of league leaders Inter Milan, putting them firmly in the title race with 12 games remaining.

Ademola Lookman and Atalanta will aim to maintain their momentum when they face Venezia on Saturday. A win would put pressure on Inter Milan to drop points, potentially allowing them to close the gap even further. With their title hopes still alive, Atalanta will be determined to secure another victory and stay in contention.

UCL Fall-Out: Lookman lambasts ‘deeply disrespectful’ Gasperini

Super Eagles  star Ademola Lookman has taken a swipe at coach Gian Piero Gasperini   after the Atalanta head coach branded the forward ‘one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen’ following the club’s elimination  from the  UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.

Atalanta needed to overturn a 2-1 defeat to Club Brugge in the second leg of their UCL play-off   but lost  3-1 at home to the Belgian side.

Atalanta were eventually booted out by Brugge 5-2 on aggregate despite Lookman’s effort including scoring a goal immediately after he came on as a substitute  but later  missed  a spot kick.

Gasperini  then  singled out Lookman for criticism over his decision to take the penalty.

“Lookman was not supposed to take that penalty, he is one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen,” said Gasperini. “He has a frankly terrible record even in training, he converts very few of them. Retegui and De Ketelaere were there but Lookman in a moment of enthusiasm after scoring decided to take the ball and that was a gesture I did not appreciate at all.”

Reacting on his X  (formerly Twitter) account, Lookman took   exemption to such unfair  criticism as he called Gasperini  ‘deeply disrespectful’.

“It saddens me on a day like this to have to write this statement – most of all because of what we have achieved together as a team and as a city,’ Lookman said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Being singled out in the manner I have been not only hurts but feels deeply disrespectful, not least because of the immense hard work and commitment I have always put in each and every day to help bring success to this club and to the incredible fans of Bergamo.

“In truth, I have dealt with many difficult moments during my time here – the majority of which I have never spoken about because in my opinion the team must always be protected and must come first. This makes what happened last night even more hurtful.

“Along with our incredible fans, we as a team are hurting too with last night’s result. During the match the designated penalty taker instructed me to take the penalty; and to support the team I took responsibility in the moment to do so.

“Life’s about challenges and turning pain into power which I’ll continue to do,” he added.

Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman will leave Atalanta at the end of the season according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Lookman has been at the centre of attention on social media after Atalanta’s head coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, criticized him for missing a penalty in their 3-1 Champions League loss to Club Brugge on Tuesday, leading to their elimination from the competition.

In response, Lookman took to his official social media handles to express his disappointment, asserting that he felt deeply disrespected and hurt by Gasperini’s comments.

Amid the controversy, Romano has confirmed on his official X handle that Atalanta will attempt to resolve the issue between Lookman and Gasperini.

He said: “Understand plan remains for Ademola Lookman to leave Atalanta this summer. Atalanta will try to clarify the situation with Gasperini in the next 24 hours after strong quotes, but won’t change future plans. It was already planned last summer, transfer to happen this year.”

Atalanta will seek to resolve the situation amicably in order to avoid a similar event that transpired between Napoli and Victor Osimhen, which ended with the Nigerian striker’s loan move to Galatasaray.

With Atalanta still in the Serie A title race, only five points behind league leaders Napoli, the club will aim to re-establish a positive atmosphere in the dressing room despite recent setbacks on and off the pitch.

  • Lessons from Lookman’s African Player of the Year award

Lessons from Lookman’s African Player of the Year award

    • By Steve Ogah

Ademola Lookman’s 2024 CAF African soccer player of the year award shot him into legendary status on the continent two months after he took 14th position at the 2024 Ballon d’Or award in Paris and four years after he squandered a crucial penalty kick, endured a painful experience, and his career took a downward trajectory.

Receiving his award in December, in Marrakech, Morocco, Lookman said, “just over four years ago, I failed in front of the world,’’ adding: “And fast forward four years, I’m the best player in Africa.”

Speaking about an episode that is tough to forget in his professional playing career, Lookman sought to inspire, stressing the power of positive thinking, hope, and hard work in the often long and arduous road to success on the pitch.

    An unforgettable failure

The failure the Nigerian forward referenced happened in 2020 in England. On November 8, 2020, Lookman’s Fulham was down by a lone goal against West Ham in a premiership game. They needed a point desperately and the responsibility fell on the young striker to convert a late penalty. He could have easily chosen a corner in the goal, stepped up to the spot, and kicked the ball with power. But the inexpert player chose to be stylish, bungling his kick in the process. Thereafter, he bore a remarkable part of that collective team loss at West Ham. And he was scarred going forward.

At the time, Scot Parker was Fulham’s manager and he found it impossible to conceal his feelings towards Lookman. A disillusioned Parker said he was expressively disappointed and a bit angry.

But back in January 2017, Ademola Lookman made his debut for Everton against Manchester City and scored only on his second touch, raising hopes of a promising career in the English Premiership. It was tough not to be impressed with such a magnificent start in the highly competitive world of English professional soccer. But all hopes vanished when Fulham was relegated at the end of the 2020/2021 season. According to Aleksandar Mitrovic, Lookman’s former teammate, the entire team had “failed.”

And Ademola Lookman had to look somewhere else to ply his trade. But he had lost some of the starch seen at the start of his professional career. The former Charlton Athletic jewel couldn’t leave indelible marks at Everton, Germany’s RB Leipzig, Fulham, and Leicester, despite the huge talent and promise many had praised when Everton snatched him from Charlton in the English second tier, straight into the Premiership.

    Atalanta to the Rescue

In August 2022, Lookman signed for Italy’s Atalanta, raising new hopes about his professional trajectory. Truly, only two years back, his former manager at Fulham had made a prophetic statement despite the striker’s on-field failure when it mattered most.

    A prophecy is fulfilled

In 2020, in the aftermath of Lookman’s fluffed penalty, Scot Parker had predicted that the young forward would rise again. He said: “He’ll bounce back,” adding, “He’s an unbelievable character and professional.” Four years later, the prophecy was fulfilled with astonishing accuracy.

On May 22, 2024, Lookman rose to global prominence on the turbo-charged night of the UEFA Europa League final at Ireland’s Aviva Stadium. On the back of a fourth-place finish in the Italian Serie A, Atalanta overwhelmed Bayer Leverkusen of Germany by 3-0 in Dublin, Lookman scoring all three impressive goals against the German league champions. It was a significant night for the young Nigerian as he became the first player to score a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final.

    The man from somewhere

But then again, Ademola Lookman is no stranger to remarkable accomplishments, having won laurels with England’s youth team. He won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017. Again, he secured silver with the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the 2023 CAF African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, scoring three vital goals at the continent’s biggest soccer tournament.

    Significance of Lookman’s win

Ademola Lookman’s deep pain swiftly became his solution, his elixir for success as he began to repair his career after that disastrous penalty that left deep scars in the heart of Fulham. His CAF African Footballer of the Year award is significant because it underlines the point that hard work and grit pays. It is a testament to what talent, endurance, and belief can achieve under the right temperament, external influences, and managerial instructions.

According to a statement from Atalanta soccer club: “Lookman is the first-ever Atalanta player to have lifted such an outstanding individual international award.”

Born on October 20, 1997, in south London, Ademola Lookman met his destiny when he chose Nigeria over England despite an illustrious youth career with the land of his birth. Lookman’s wheel of success will grind again, oiled in great measures by his level-headedness, skills, and dexterity with both feet.

    The path head

The prestigious CAF award stressed Lookman’s exquisite playing qualities, placing him among Africa’s soccer royals. His talents and playing style point towards an illustrious career in world soccer. He will win more individual and collective awards under the right managerial influence and personal commitment.

Despite renewed interests that will follow after this massive personal win, Lookman must maintain his celebrated qualities as a disciplined team player for country and club. It will be tough not to be swayed by interests from old and new admirers. But Lookman must stand firm and look deep before making his next professional move. He shouldn’t be in a rush to leave the galaxy that made his star shine. His brilliant star is still rising, promising to illuminate his path further. His triumph at the CAF awards sends a powerful and inspiring memo to millions globally.

Nonetheless, Lookman has a significant and inspiring message for everyone. Speaking on the night of his triumphant moment, he stressed that he wants – “all the young children and people watching” not to let failures weigh them down, or that to break their wings, but in fact, turn their pain into your power and continue to fly.
