Lookman shines like neon light in the dark

Ademola Lookman, the Super Eagles forward  and recently decorated  African Footballer of the Year,  was audacious  about his own pre-eminence  for  Atalanta  so much so that  he predicted that he was  going to make a success of his career with his Italian side.

Way  back in January 2023 and just less  than  six months  after  he was  signed  by  Atalanta  from Leicester City on a  four-year contract  for a reported  fee of 15 million  Euros, the London-born  Ademola  was pressed  on his breakthrough in the Serie A  after a struggling career  with Everton, RB Leipzig, among others.

“Did I expect to be this successful? Yes! Of course, I expected it. Maybe it’s a surprise to you, but I know what I can bring, I know what I can do. The team is the most important thing,” the then 25-year-old Lookman  said after scoring what was his 12th  goal since joining Atalanta  in a Serie A clash against Sampdoria. “The differences? Different circumstances, different scenarios that made me who I am today and that’s me as a whole person.

“I think I’m in the right moment, doing the right things, keep staying disciplined in what I do.”

Over the last two seasons, Lookman has turned  out to be one of the major fulcrum  for Atalanta  as well as the Super Eagles  of Nigeria, since he switched  nationality  playing for his native country  in March 2022  after  starring  for  his adopted  England with whom  he was a FIFA  Under-20 World Cup winner  in 2017.

Lookman  practically made  the 2023/2024 season his own with both  Atalanta  and the Super Eagles, scoring important goals  for both  club and country with aplomb. At the start of January  in the prestigious  Africa Cup of  Nations (AFCON)  in Cote d’Ivoire. Lookman was  undoubtedly the ‘star boy’ for Nigeria, scoring  three  goals and a couple of assists to  lead the Super Eagles  through the  maze unto the final where  they painfully  lost 2-1 to the host team, the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire.

But it was  with Atalanta in the year under review  that  Lookman, affectionately called ‘Mola’  by close admirers and fans,  showed  his stellar stuff  and what a  better way  to show the world  what he was capable of doing than  in  the 2024  Europa League Cup  Final in Dublin.

Pitched against  German  champions, Bayer Leverkusen,  complete with  his compatriot, Victor Boniface, Lookman turned  the tide  in Atalanta’s favour  scoring a stunning  hat-trick  in a 3-0  score line in what would be his side’s  first  major  silverware, not only in Europe but first  honour since  1963.

His heroic hat-trick in the Europa League final  which was  the fastest in history – all coming  within 26 minutes, saw Lookman become the first African player to achieve the feat since 1975.

Aside,  he was also the first player ever to score a hat-trick in a Europa League final and the very  first  in a major  European  final  since  Jupp  Heynckes’ hat-trick  for Monchengladbach  in the 5-1 thrashing of Twente in the second leg of the 1975 UEFA Cup final. His unique  hat-trick was also  the first in a single-match  major  European   final since Pierino Prati’s efforts,  when AC Milan brushed aside  Ajax (in their first-ever final ) 4-1 to win  the 1969 European Cup final.

As we say in local parlance,  ‘Mola  just  blow’ with  that Europa League Cup Final  performance  to become  Atalanta  and, indeed, the Super Eagles’ star of the moment.

Those  pivotal achievements  with the Super Eagles  at the 2023 AFCON  and of  course  with Atalanta gave him a  place  in the  final shortlist  of 30  for the 2024 Ballon d’Or Prize where  he finished 14th and, importantly, the only African  player and, of course, the first Atalanta player  to be so well honoured  in Paris.

“It’s a crazy thing. And being the only African on the list makes it even more special. I’m proud of it. It’s an honour, knowing where I come from,” he said of the Ballon d’Or finish. “I was very struck by the fact that (Gian Piero) Gasperini told me a few days later that I had become part of football history. It’s true, it’s an honour, but I worked hard to get here.”

Born in Wandsworth on the 20th  of October in 1997  and christened Ademola Lookman Olajade Alade Iyiola, the  fast-paced  and skilful winger with the ability to drift past defenders, attack the depth and can cover different positions in the attack who can play different positions offensively, started playing for Charlton Athletic, making his senior team debut in November 2015.

He reportedly joined Everton in January 2017  but was loaned out to RB Leipzig in January 2018 and kicked off his spell in Germany by scoring on his debut, which arrived in the away victory over Borussia Monchengladbach. He rounded off the season with five goals and four  assists registered in 11 appearances and after another spell at Everton, he was signed again by RB Leipzig in the summer of 2019. He then returned to England on loan to play for the Premier League sides Fulham first and then Leicester City en route to Atalanta in 2022, where  he has turned into a sensation.

He  was  deservedly  named  Atalanta Player of The Season, made the Europa League  Team of The Year  as he remarkably contributed  27 goals and 12 assists between club and country in 2024.

“I’ve always had the confidence in my ability,” Lookman, who started his professional football career in 2014 with Charlton Athletic’s Academy, said after leading  Atalanta to their  famous win in Dublin. “In the past two years,  I’ve been able to take my game to a new level and show it on a more consistent basis. Maybe it could have come earlier but it has come now.

“I’m pleased with the progress I’ve made, but this is just the beginning. I hope for more nights like this,” he added.

Of course, Lookman  would be the last to take his foot off the pedal  and in the on-going 2024-2025  campaign, Lookman has remained a  class act  with Atalanta on the last count; he has  scored an impressive  eight goals  with four assists  across 13 matches  to consolidate  his burgeoning   career as his Bergamo  city  club romped to the  top of the Serie A.

On his own personal level,  his achievements  for both  Nigeria and Atalanta  in the period under  review, made him  the firm favourite  to claim the  prestigious African Footballer of the Year  prize  for 2024.

It was therefore  not a surprise at all that on December 16 in the Moroccan  city of Marrakech, Lookman  came out  brightly despite some stiff challenges from  the star-studded quartet of Morocco’s  Achraf Hakimi, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, Ivorian  Simon Adingra, and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams from South Africa.

The 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year gong, made the 27-year-old Lookman  the sixth Nigerian to win the much-coveted  continental’s individual   award after Rashidi Yekini (1993), Emmanuel Amuneke(1994), Nwankwo Kanu (1996 and 1999), Victor Ikpeba (1997), and Victor Osimhen (2023).

He was also named in  the CAF 2024 FIFPro Men’s Best XI alongside his compatriot Victor Osimhen, among  other notable African super stars  including  Egypt and Liverpool striker Mo Salah, Cameroon and Manchester United’s Andre Onana in goal, with Morocco and PSG’s Hakimi, Senegal and Al Hilal’s Kalidou Koulibaly, and DR Congo and Marseille’s Chancel Mbemba completing the back three.

In midfield are Ghana and West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, Morocco and Fenerbahce’s Sofyan Ambrabat, Cote d’Ivoire  and Al-Ahli Saudi’s Frank Kessie, and Mali and Tottenham’s Yves Bissouma.

“First, I want to thank the Almighty God for all that he has been doing in my life,” Lookman  said inter alia  after being feted as the  2024 African Footballer of the Year on December 16th in Marrakech. “I want to thank the President, my teammates  at both club and country; I want to thank them for their support  and the love that they have  given me.

“Today is a blessing to me, my family and my nation. To be recognised  as the best player in Africa  is something incredible  and I’m extremely proud of this.

“Four years ago, my career felt down and fast forward  four years after, I’m the best player in Africa. I want to say to all the young children  and people watching this, don’t let your failures  weigh you down, to break your wings; but for a fact, turn your pains  to your power  and you begin to fly,” he added.

For us at Sporting Life, no  Nigerian athlete  has captured  the imagination  as much as  Lookman  has done  in the  year under  review  and  his choice  as this  newspaper’s  Sportsperson of the Year  for 2024 is remarkable indeed.

In what  would henceforth  be  an annual  accolade by your  authoritative  and the leading  sports  paper in Nigeria,  we have  the  honour of presenting to you, Ademola Lookman as the first  Nigerian  to be so recognised as  the Sporting Life’s Sportsperson of the Year.

Lookman tips Atalanta for better 2025

Amid transfer rumours linking him away from  Atalanta  in the January Transfer Window,  newly crowned  African Footballer  of the Year, Ademola Lookman, has predicted  a better 2025 for his Bergamo-based outfit.

On Saturday, Lookman provided an assist in Atalanta’s draw against Lazio and the Super  Eagles forward  admitted the result was a positive step in the right direction despite their two-point drop, adding  he wants to achieve more for La Dea next year.

“It was a tough match, the first half was very difficult for us, but we fought and on another day might’ve won the game. We drew today, but we didn’t lose, so it’s positive.

The club had a fantastic 2024, so we want to continue doing the same thing and the new year will be even better,” the ex-Leicester City attacker told Sky Sport Italia.

Lookman’s side kick-off their 2025 with a huge clash against Inter Milan in the Super Coppa Italia semi-final on January 2nd. The game will be played in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, Atalanta director Tony D’Amico , has warned interested parties  that they fully intend to ‘maintain the full squad’ in January.

The January transfer window opens later this week and Atalanta have several stars targeted by Premier League giants, including Ederson, De Ketelaere and 2024 African Player of the Year Lookman.

However, D’Amico assures that the Bergamo side – one of the few in Italy to run at a profit on a regular basis – has no intention of selling.

“Certainly, the January transfer window is a difficult one for all clubs. If there are any opportunities, we will go for them, but obviously maintaining the full squad that we currently have at our disposal.”

Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City have all been linked with midfielder Ederson, while Liverpool also eyed up Lookman.

  • Looking up to Lookman

    Looking up to Lookman

    Ray Ekpu

Our man Ademola Olajade Alade Ayoola Lookman simply known as Ademola Lookman has won the African Footballer of the Year Award for Nigeria. He becomes the 7th Nigerian to be so decorated. Last year it was won by another Nigerian, a prolific goal scorer, Victor Osimhen who is a restless runner, full of energy and vitality.

Lookman is a lucky find who was born to Nigerian parents in Wandsworth, England on October 20, 1997. He played for England’s under 19, under 20 and under 21. Nigeria made three attempts to make him switch allegiance to Nigeria but the young man was unbending. Our coach, Gernot Rohr, approached him in 2017 and he turned down the offer and twice in 2018 he refused to give his nod to Nigeria’s desire to have him lace his boots for the country of his parent’s birth. But on March 25, 2022 the unexpected happened. He put on Nigeria’s jersey in his debut match for Nigeria. It was a Ghana versus Nigeria match as part of the third round of the African section of the qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup which Nigeria missed.

Lookman has made a roaring success in his footballing career, playing for such big clubs as Everton, R.B Leipzig, Fulham, Leicester City and of course Atalanta, the Italian Serie A club that he joined on August 4, 2022 for a four-year contract. Interestingly, he scored on his debut for the club, scored braces in three consecutive matches. On May 22, he scored his first career hat trick in the Europa League Final at the Dublin Arena as Atalanta defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 to win the trophy for the first time in the club’s history. Both the club and Lookman made history.

Since joining the club in 2022 Lookman has made 75 appearances and scored 32 goals. He was named Atalanta Player of the Year 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. This year he was named in the CAF team of the year 2024. As a member of the Nigeria Africa Cup of Nations runners-up team, he was honoured along with the other players by the Nigerian government with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger.

In the short period that he has featured for the Super Eagles, Lookman has made 27 appearances and scored eight goals. It is obvious that Lookman has an exciting club and international career ahead of him once he has no serious injuries.

However, despite the excellent individual performance of people like Lookman, Nigeria’s football is a source of worry to football aficionados. By the latest ranking, Nigeria is at number 44 in the world and 5th in Africa. There was a time that Nigeria was at a single digit. That is evidence that we have declined disastrously today. That is because we have not invested sufficiently in advancing the development of our football. We owe salaries to our coaches. We owe allowances to players for years and months and only have to appeal to their sense of patriotism when they threaten not to report to camp for preparations for upcoming matches. For this reason of indebtedness, our football managers lack the guts to discipline players who report late to camp. When Sunday Oliseh left, he was being owed salaries. When Rohr left he was being owed salaries.

When will this tardiness in football management come to an end so that we can administer this money-spinning business the way other countries do?

Nigerians would like to see the new management of Nigeria football do things differently and efficiently. They would like to see them bring big business into football. Today, we have only one football stadium Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo that is recognized by FIFA and CAF for football matches. Other stadia including the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja and National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos are whited sepulchres. And these are stadia that were expensively built and maintained over the years and Nigerians derived joy from trooping to those iconic stadia for matches. Today, they have been virtually abandoned. If the Godswill Akpabio Stadium is allowed to degenerate, we will be compelled to play our home matches in other country’s stadia. That will be a big shame for this big country.

I keep wondering why some Nigerians keep pushing for the use of Nigerian coaches for either the Super Eagles or the Super Falcons. That is not my definition of patriotism. Nigerian footballers in the Super Eagles and Super Falcons play in foreign clubs that pay them heavily in dollars. Their salaries are higher, much higher, than what the Nigerian Football Association pays its local coaches. That is why some of the local coaches beg the players for a gift of dollars. That too complicates player selection and brings corruption into the management of the Super Eagles and Super Falcons. That is one reason that I cannot vote for the use of local coaches for the two teams.

The second reason for my preference for foreign coaches for the two teams is that our local coaches do not go for refresher courses and therefore have no idea about modern tactics and strategies in the game today. They are probably suitable for the age grade teams where the young players depend largely on their raw skills and energy for success on the pitch. They are also pliable and obedient because they are hungry for success at the early stages of their career. They have not yet earned dollars that can make their heads swollen.

My other reason for preferring foreign coaches for the two senior teams is that foreign coaches receive an appropriate level of respect from our football managers. Our football managers do not give sufficient respect to local coaches. Stephen Keshi, who won the 2013 African Cup of Nations for Nigeria, was very badly treated during the tournament by the NFA. They actually did not support the team. They never thought that the team would win the tournament. And when the team won, they were unpleasantly surprised. And because of the shabby manner in which he was treated, Keshi announced his resignation as the team’s coach right there in South Africa, a very anomalous situation for a winner. That was the height of his frustration. Several other local coaches have been similarly frustrated in the past by NFA officials who seek to decide for the coaches which players they should use for matches. Sometimes, we learn that federal character comes into play. And that complicates the job of the coach. And Nigerian football is the worse for it.

The new NFF chairman must think outside the box, if he wants to succeed. The routinisation of football management in Nigeria has been a major problem. The failure to raise big money for the game is another. If there is no big investment in the game there can be no big achievement. Football is big business today. And the NFF must follow the money and bring it into the game. And when the money is brought, it must be spent in a transparent fashion so as to generate trust in other would-be investors. The game must not be seen as a chop and quench affair but as one that can bring fame and fortune to a big nation like Nigeria. If we are looking up to Lookman and co to bring honour to Nigeria, we must also spread the red carpet for them to walk on. That is reciprocity. Reciprocity can lead to success.

Be like Lookman, don’t de-market your country, Reno Omokri advises Nigerians

Social commentator Reno Omokri has praised 2024 CAF Player of the Year, Ademola Lookman, for being a good example of patriotism.

Reno made this statement in a series of posts on his official X page following the CAF awards at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, Morocco.

He said: “Nigerians must understand the difference between their leaders and their country. If you denigrate a Nigerian politician, I am not sure anybody will call you out. But when you de-market Nigeria, you make things more difficult for the average citizen. Nigeria needs foreign investments. They create jobs and improve lives.

“Ademola Lookman gets it. He has never promoted any politician or political party. He has always promoted Nigeria. Leaders come and go, but Nigeria is forever. Direct your criticism at politicians, not at Nigeria.”

Osimhen achieved what the likes of Jay-Jay Okocha and John Obi Mikel could not, with his exceptional performances for Napoli, including a league-best 26 goals, helping the Italian club secure their first Serie A title in 33 years.

Osimhen’s success extended beyond club football, as he earned international recognition by finishing eighth in the Ballon d’Or rankings and receiving a nomination for FIFA’s The Best awards in 2023. He claimed the CAF African Men’s Footballer of the Year award with a convincing win, edging out Achraf Hakimi and Mohamed Salah for the honor.

    Nwankwo Kanu — 1996, 1999

Nwankwo Kanu stands as a distinctive figure in Nigerian football history, being the only Nigerian to win the CAF Footballer of the Year award twice. His first win came in 1996, after leading Nigeria to Olympic gold in Atlanta. Kanu played a pivotal role for the Dream Team, scoring crucial goals, including two unforgettable strikes against Brazil in the semi-finals.

Kanu’s second CAF Footballer of the Year award in 1999 followed a successful period with Arsenal in the English Premier League, where he excelled for the Gunners despite grappling with a heart condition for much of the previous year, earning him a well-deserved second accolade.

In 1997, Kanu won his first award, defeating George Weah and Daniel Amokachi, and in 1999, he claimed his second title, overcoming Samuel Kuffour and Ibrahima Bakayoko.

    Victor Ikpeba — 1997

In 1997, Victor Ikpeba, the “Prince of Monaco,” became the fourth Nigerian to win the CAF Footballer of the Year award. At just 24 years old, his outstanding performances with AS Monaco in the French Ligue 1 earned him the prestigious honor, beating out two of his teammates—Chad’s Japhet N’Doram, also a Monaco player, and Super Eagles star Taribo West.

    Emmanuel Amuneke — 1994

Emmanuel Amuneke helped Nigeria retain the CAF Footballer of the Year award the following year with exceptional performances both at home and abroad. His crucial two goals in the Africa Cup of Nations final against Zambia led Nigeria to its first continental title in 14 years. Amuneke also played a pivotal role in guiding the Super Eagles to qualify for their first FIFA World Cup in the same year.

Amuneke was also a standout performer for the Super Eagles at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, scoring goals against Bulgaria and Italy to further demonstrate his exceptional ability. His impressive performances earned him the 1994 CAF Player of the Year award, ahead of Liberian icon George Weah and fellow Nigerian star Rashidi Yekini.

    Rashidi Yekini — 1993

Rashidi Yekini made history in Nigerian football by becoming the first Super Eagles player to win the CAF Footballer of the Year award in 1993. Renowned for his powerful shots and clinical finishing, Yekini’s remarkable form was on full display during the 1992 African Cup of Nations, where he emerged as the tournament’s top scorer and played a key role in Nigeria’s bronze medal victory.

Yekini’s impact also extended to the Portuguese league with Vitória Setúbal, where he netted an incredible 30 goals in 30 matches during the 1992/93 season, a performance that earned him the prestigious CAF African Footballer of the Year award. His legacy in Nigerian football is unparalleled, as he remains the country’s all-time top scorer. This achievement marked the start of Nigeria’s prominent recognition on the African football stage.

Ademola Lookman, Nigeria and Atalanta’s goal poacher hopes to hear his name announced as the winner tonight. Lookman has been outstanding and a player of grit.

His two goals secured Nigeria’s quarter-final spot during the 2023 AFCON, and his decisive goal against Angola in the quarterfinals propelled Nigeria to the semifinals.

This stellar performance made Lookman Nigeria’s top scorer in the tournament, earning him significant praise for his contributions in the knockout stages.

    Ademola Lookman for Atalanta

Lookman has been a key player for Atalanta in Serie A and European competitions. In the 2023/2024 season, he showcased his attacking brilliance, contributing significantly with goals and assists. His adaptability, work rate, and ability to produce game-changing moments have been crucial for Atalanta, particularly in high-stakes matches.

Lookman scored a remarkable hat-trick in the 2023-24 UEFA Europa League final, leading Atalanta to a 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen and their first European title. This victory marked Atalanta’s first-ever major continental honor in their 117-year history.

He scored 17 goals and provided 10 assists across all competitions for Atalanta during the 2023/2024 season.

    Ademola Lookman’s consistency and versatility

Lookman’s ability to perform consistently at both club and international levels highlights his exceptional talent. Whether playing as a winger or forward, he excels in delivering goals, creating opportunities, and supporting defensive responsibilities when needed.

This versatility sets him apart from other contenders. As of December 10, 2024, Lookman has scored 13 goals and made 5 assists for both club and country.

Club: 12 goals in the Champions League, UEFA Supercup, Serie A, and friendlies

National team: 1 goal in friendlies

If consistency, impact in major tournaments, and club achievements are key criteria for the award, Ademola Lookman’s performances place him among the top contenders for the African Player of the Year award.

Rumors of Achraf Hakimi To Be Named Winner

Rumors of Achraf Hakimi potentially being crowned the 2024 winner ahead of Ademola Lookman is currently circulating like fire in harmattan.

Hakimi’s excellent performance can only be attributed to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) where he secured domestic titles such as Ligue 1 and the French Super Cup

However, the early exit of Morocco in the 2023 AFCON places him at great disadvantage to winning the articulate award.

Arguably, Hakimi doesn’t seem to have to complete criteria to win the title.

The only way Hakimi’s name will be revealed as the winner depends on the weight given to tournament achievements versus consistent performances across the season.
