Saraki panel meets Makinde on PDP crisis

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) reconciliation train rolled into Ibadan, Oyo State capital, yesterday, in continuation of the consultation on how to resolve the protracted  crisis.

The chairman of the panel, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, held a meeting with Governor Seyi Makinde at the Government House, Agodi.

It was the second time the strategy committee met with the governor since Saraki, former governor of Kwara State, took up the assignment.

The main opposition party was thrown into confusion on Tuesday, following the resolution of some stakeholders that its 2027 presidential candidate should come from the South in the spirit of zoning.

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, who hosted the stakeholders, including members of ‘G5 governors’, formed ahead of the 2023 presidential election, emphasizing that peace can only reign in the party, if its constitutional provision on rotation is upheld.

The minister, who was PDP governor of Rivers between 2015 and 2023, also faulted how the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, was shoved aside by the PDP governors.

Yesterday, the Bayelsa State chapter of the PDP hailed Wike and the G5 over the Abuja parley, noting that the resolutions are critical to the survival of the party.

Also, the chapter applauded Anyanwu’s affirmation as National Secretary by the stakeholders and their insistence on presidential zoning to the South.

    Saraki on trouble shooting

Although details of the Ibadan meeting are unknown, sources said Saraki visited Makinde to seek his opinion on how to resolve the leadership crisis and prepare for the proposed convention

According to the source, “the party will hold its convention in Kano in August and the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting by end of this month. There is need to bring all the warring factions together under one umbrella.

“As we all know, Makinde is a major factor to be reckoned with in the party. Hence, the need to always carry him along. Even though we were not privy to their discussion since it was held privately, it might not be unconnected with the resolve of the Committee to end the crisis in the party.

Saraki, who confirmed the Ibadan meeting, wrote on his Facebook page: “Thank you, Your Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, for making time to meet with us today-even though it coincided with your wife’s birthday.

“Warm wishes to Her Excellency Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde.

“Following today’s meeting, we remain cautiously optimistic as we forge ahead to secure a common position among the leadership of our great party”

    Bayelsa PDP hails Wike, G5

Bayelsa PDP, led by Acting Chairman George Turnah, described the meeting hosted by Wike as a decisive step towards uniting the party.

The Publicity Secretary, Derri Alasuote Wright, said in a statement that the parley underscored Wike’s unwavering love for the PDP and his relentless fight for justice.

The party saluted Wike’s  dedication to  party’s principles, adding that he had championed the cause of unity and integrity within the fold.

The  statement reads: “ We fully endorse the resolutions reached at the meeting, and as a state chapter, we stand by our recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the PDP, and to state that there is no vacancy requiring any replacement whatsoever.

“Our party’s constitution and the recent Supreme Court decision regarding the National Secretary issue are very clear and unambiguous in this regard.

“As a state chapter, we stand united with the rest of our eminent leaders and concerned stakeholders across the federation in the decision to zone the Presidential ticket of our party for the upcoming 2027 elections to the Southern region.

“This strategic move does not just demonstrate our commitment to inclusivity and fairness. It also does ensure that our party remains attuned to the voices of all Nigerians.

“Bayelsa State PDP reaffirms its loyalty to the resolutions of this meeting and remains steadfast in its support for Nyesom Wike as our national leader, as well as our endorsement of Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary.

“Together, we will forge ahead with renewed vigour to restore the PDP to its rightful place as a beacon of hope and justice for our people and nation.”

    ‘Abuja meeting unknown to PDP’

The Director-General of the PDP Campaign Council for the November, 2024 Ondo State Governorship Election, Eddy Olafeso, said those at the Abuja meeting attended individually and not as party members.

He called for peace in the party, saying that it is in the interest of members.

Olafeso, former Information Commissioner in Ondo State, said: “That was not a PDP stakeholders’ meeting; they will be correct to say that they are concerned individuals.”

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has described the death of a former Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Zambia and member of the Oyo State Elders’ Council, Ambassador Ibironke Adefope, as a great loss to the state.

The governor described Adefope as an amazon and an icon, who made indelible marks on the sands of time, stating that she would be greatly missed by the state.

According to the governor, the news of Adefope’s death came as a shock, but everyone must submit to the will of God.

  • Eid-el-Kabir: Makinde recommends 6yrs single term for president, governors, others

Eid-el-Kabir: Makinde recommends 6yrs single term for president, governors, others

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has advocated a single term of five or six years for elected political office holders across all levels of government in Nigeria, as against the current double term of four years each.

Makinde spoke on Friday, when Muslim clerics, traditional rulers and political office holders paid a visit to his Ikolaba, Ibadan residence, shortly after the Eid-el-Kabir prayers, held at the Eid Ground, Agodi, Ibadan.

The delegation, led by the Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, included the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja; former Deputy Governor and Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP), Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja; former deputy governors, Hazeem Gbolarumi and Hamid Gbadamosi; member representing Ibadan North-East/South-East Federal Constituency, Hon. Abass Adigun Agboworin; and Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, Alhaji Dawodu Makanjuola.

Addressing the delegation, Makinde congratulated the Muslim faithful on witnessing the year 2025 Eid-el-Kabir and thanked them for their prayers and commitment to the state as well as their unflinching support for him and his government over the past six years, urging them to continue praying for the success of his administration.

He noted that a single term of five or six years is enough for any government to focus and serve the people and deliver on its mandate, calling for a constitutional amendment to effect this.

Makinde said the call became imperative in view of his observation of how many years elected officers are able to face the serious business of governance out of a total of 8years a two term an elected person may spend.

According to the governor, the time used for serious business of governance out of the eight years in most cases don’t go beyond five to six years as out of the 8 years, while about two to three years will be used for electioneering campaign among other political party activities.

Makinde said: “I was just looking at the trajectory for me in government. I have spent six years already and due to no fault of anybody, we lost the year 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We lost almost one year, campaigning all over the place for the second tenure. Now, people have started distracting us on what I want to do next and all of that. So, I feel that, effectively, the time we can say we are very serious with governance is just about five out of the eight years.

“That is why I feel if you remove all these distractions, a single tenure of five or six years is actually enough to focus and do the work that we are trying to do in eight years.

Acknowledging that the call goes beyond his personal interest as some may raise concern that he (Makinde) is raising the call after serving for an eight years tenure, Governor Makinde said he made the call in good fate going by his experience on the job.

“Well, we shouldn’t be afraid to say the fact based on data that is available to us. It has nothing to do with me. If they say I should end it, so be it.

“So, I am just calling the attention of our people to this because it is a constitutional issue. We should start looking at it. I know that it has been brought to the attention of the National Assembly but, quite frankly, it is a model that should work for this country.”

Delivering the message of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Ladoja called for more support for the government and prayed for more success and achievements for Governor Makinde’s administration.

While speaking with newsmen after the Eid prayer, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Lawal, urged the Muslim Ummah to always exhibit the valuable lessons of obedience, trust and true sacrifice to the will of God, which are the doctrines and lessons taught by the Holy Quran.

He thanked the Governor for his commitment to the welfare of workers and the people of Oyo State through prompt payment of salaries and called for more cooperation from the people of the state so that dividends of democracy would further be delivered.

Why I don’t take chieftaincy titles – Makinde

Oyo State governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde said that he made up his mind as a matter of principle not to receive awards or chieftaincy titles until the expiration of his tenure of office.

Makinde made this known while receiving the Deji of Akure in Ondo State, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, Odundin II, through a delegation he empowered to meet the governor in his home in Ibadan, Oyo State.

While playing host to the delegation, Governor Makinde confirmed that he had been approached on various occasions for awards and chieftaincy recognition but humbly declined them based on his conviction.

The governor, however, said that with the offer of a chieftaincy title made to him by Oba Ogunlade, he would, for the sake of the respect he has for the monarch, accept the offer.

Governor Makinde said his reason for not receiving chieftaincy titles was to allow people to properly assess and evaluate his performance in office and decide whether he deserved such honour.

On why he had to change his mind to accept the chieftaincy title to be bestowed on him as his wife, the governor said it was in recognition of his maternal ancestral home of Akure.

“There is always a saying that ‘a prophet is not honoured in his hometown,’ but I am more than happy that my honour as a prophet will begin from my maternal home of Akure”, the governor said.

Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation and the Olu of Okelisa Titun, Olu Adekunle Ajanaku commended the governor for his giant strides in transforming Oyo State and his immense contributions to Nigeria at large. While delivering the message of the Deji on his decision and that of Akure people to honour the governor at home with a chieftaincy title during his tenth coronation anniversary coming up in July, the Olu of Okelisa Titun also described such gesture as a response to the noble character of the governor and his immense support for Akure Kingdom.

In his reply, the governor promised to continue to support Akure land and the monarchy, while assuring the delegation of his unwavering commitment to the development of Akure and her people. The Governor also spoke about his personal people-focused projects in Akure, including the renovation of the St. David’s Cathedral.

The delegation also included Chief Akin Adinlewa, Dr. Festus Adedayo, the President of Crest Media, Mr Olumide Origunloye, Engr. Omoregie and a host of others.

Makinde hands over medical equipment to Adeoyo state hospital

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Wednesday, handed over 31 different medical equipment to the management of the Ring Road State Hospital, Adeoyo, Ibadan.

According to the governor, the delivery of the equipment was in line with his administration’s vision to elevate specialist hospitals like the Ring Road State Hospital, to the standard of University Teaching Hospitals, in the area of training and healthcare delivery through the provision of necessary medical equipment, which will aid the delivery of sound medical service to residents of the state.

Speaking through his Executive Assistant on Administration, Rev. Idowu Ogedengbe, the governor said the procurement of the medical equipment followed an assessment of the Ring Road State Hospital, Adeoyo, during a medical outreach by the Christ Compassion to the Rural World in 2024.

He noted that the mission could not use the state hospital to carry out surgical procedures and operations due to the state of the facilities at the hospital’s theatre, stating that the equipment delivered to the hospital were of the best quality and were carefully selected to ensure that their reagents and other consumables were available and affordable.

He said, “We are here today to officially hand over 31 different pieces of equipment to the management of the Ring Road State Hospital, Adeoyo.

“This is in line with the vision of the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr Seyi Makinde, which is aimed at elevating specialist hospitals like the Ring Road State Hospital, Adeoyo, to the standard of University Teaching Hospitals like UCH, in the area of training and health care delivery through the provision of necessary medical equipment that will aid the delivery of sound medical service to residents of the state.

“The procurement of these medical equipment by the office of the Executive Governor came on the heels of the assessment of the Ring Road State Hospital, Adeoyo towards serving as one of the hospitals that were to be used to carry out surgical procedures and operations during the last medical outreach organised by the Christ Compassion to the Rural World, which took place in December, 2024.

“Due to the state of the facilities at the operating theatres, the hospital could not be used during that exercise.

“So, the governor thought it necessary to make sure that the hospital is not only equipped ahead of similar collaborations between the state and prospective partners, corporate organisations as well as religious bodies in the future, but also to ensure that the Ring Road State Hospital becomes a centre for surgical excellence, providing comprehensive medical services to the good people of Oyo State.

“According to the Africa Research Connect, Ring Road State Hospital, Ibadan serves as a pivotal healthcare institution not only as a centre for patient care, but it also plays a significant role in medical research and education.

“It has contributed to various studies that explore critical health challenges, including mental health, geriatric care, and public health concerns.

“The research initiatives undertaken at Ring Road State Hospital reflect a dedication to improving health outcomes and understanding the complexities of health issues faced by the Nigerian population.

“While thanking His Excellency for this kind gesture, let me use this opportunity to appeal to the management and staff of this hospital to please make the best of these equipment by putting in place a good maintenance culture that will ensure that they are preserved, last long and very durable.

“Thankfully, the equipment procured are not only of the best quality in the market, they are very modern and have been carefully selected to ensure that their reagents and other consumables are available and affordable. They will last long.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chief Medical Director, Ring Road State Hospital, Adeoyo, Dr Oladipo Aremu, appreciated Governor Makinde for his impact in the health sector, stressing that the delivery of the additional equipment would enhance the hospital’s services and also alleviate challenges in providing quality medical care services for the people of Oyo State.

In his goodwill message, the Director, Christian Missionary Foundation, Dr. Olatunde Oladoyinbo, lauded the governor for creating a functioning and effective system in the health sector.

  • Makinde, FIRS boss urge humane approach to taxing informal sector

Makinde, FIRS boss urge humane approach to taxing informal sector

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, have called for a humane and strategic approach in efforts to expand Nigeria’s tax net to include the informal sector.

Speaking at the opening of the 157th meeting of the Joint Tax Board (JTB) held at The Jagz Hotel, Iyaganku, Ibadan, both leaders emphasised the need for understanding and collaboration rather than coercion in widening the tax base.

Themed “Taxation of the Informal Sector: Potentials and Challenges,” the two-day meeting brings together top tax administrators, policy makers, and key stakeholders from across the country to discuss ways of integrating the informal economy into Nigeria’s taxation system.

In his opening remarks, Governor Makinde noted that the informal sector is the backbone of the local economy and must be engaged using technology and empathy for meaningful outcomes.

“We must develop modalities that foster partnership with the informal sector,” Makinde said. “Taxation should not be about enforcement alone. It must be about understanding, support, and empowerment so that those in the informal economy can thrive and contribute meaningfully.”

FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji echoed similar sentiments, urging tax stakeholders to adopt inclusive strategies that encourage voluntary compliance and ensure the sustainability of the nation’s revenue generation efforts.

Makinde also reiterated his administration’s commitment to balancing fiscal responsibility with inclusive economic growth while highlighting the significance of the state’s recent initiatives that have improved on its revenue generation drive.

Makinde said, “This theme is timely, but it must also be aligned with the real work that we are currently doing in your various states and across Nigeria to improve the tax system, especially as you are trying to find solutions to the informal sector. I have listened to the chairman of the JTB. He’s on, I guess, well, formalise the sector, and then you can tax them.

“But you are all here with diverse experiences, and then you can sit down and talk. Find out what the best path forward is. How do you balance the challenges that have been identified? And also, how do we look forward? I have heard people talk about, oh, in Nigeria, we do not have any reason or any need to have any challenge with poverty.

“This is a rich country. Yes, we are rich in natural resources, but it’s a poor country, because economic prosperity cannot be based only on our natural resources. For you to have economic prosperity, you must ensure that you go out there, mobilise your people.

“You must have knowledge and skills. And you must also have intensive production. You must produce something. That is when you can move from being resource-rich to economic prosperity.

“To move away from federal allocation to generating incomes, having productivity at the local level. So in our state, we are not just talking about expanding the tax net. We are actively ensuring that people are productive.

“And then we are moving the revenue base of the state forward. We recognise that the informal sector, made up of traders, artisans, commercial drivers, and small businesses, forms the backbone of our local economy.

“Historically undertaxed, this segment has not become a focus of strategic action.”

He urged the participants to seize the opportunity of the meeting to come out with a framework that will not cause pain to the informal sector. He also listed his expectations from the experts and stakeholders after the meeting.

“So you spend the next two days challenging yourselves. And I do hope that you come up with a solution. We are taking concrete steps to bring more people into the tax net without burdening them unnecessarily. So our initiatives include mass tax education, where you let people know you want to pay for these services.

“We have to find a way to pay for it. Also, simplified processes, where you can stay in the corner of your business premises and pay your taxes there. And also incentive-linked compliance. So, we encourage people to have voluntary tax compliance for benefits, such as access to employment schemes and credit facilities.

“We have a lot to do. And that is why I am particularly hopeful about the outcome of this meeting. So in the next two days, I look forward to hearing about further proven methods of capturing revenue from highly mobile individuals and how to track informal businesses, and how that will work side by side with formalisation of the informal sector.

“I also like to hear the solution from this room as it regards ways to deepen partnership with stakeholders like the transport union and the market association. Also, I look forward to innovations in using data and technology to track and support informal businesses without excessive bureaucracy. So this forum is an opportunity to exchange ideas on how to move from intent to impact across states and sectors.

“In our state, we are committed to continuous improvement. We are also, like Femi said, strengthening the capacity of our state board of internal revenue to manage compliance more effectively with empathy and fairness. The future of taxation, especially of the informal sector, depends on how well we balance enforcement with understanding”, the governor added.

Earlier in his welcome address, FIRS Chairman, who also doubles as the JTB Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, acknowledged Oyo State’s pioneering role in national development and tax administration.

He noted that the informal sector accounts for 92.6 percent of Nigeria’s employed population, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), emphasising the sector’s critical importance in Nigeria’s economic structure.

Adedeji stated that the JTB, currently transitioning to the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) with expanded scope and responsibilities, would continue to harmonise and modernise tax systems nationwide.

He cautioned against any attempt of adding tax burden on the poor and charged the meeting to focus on conceiving strategies to formalize the informal sector before any tax attempt.

He said, “Our meeting here provides the right platform to brainstorm innovative and equitable ways of bringing the informal sector into the tax net without alienating or overburdening it,” Adedeji noted.

While stressing that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is concerned about the well-being of operators of the informal sector, noting that the ongoing efforts to capture the players into the taxable net are to properly organise the sector for effective economic planning and not to tax them.

Also speaking earlier, Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Femi Awakan who also spoke on the state’s tax reforms and challenges reported that Oyo state’s IGR has grown from N1.6 billion per month in 2019 to about N8.5 billion per month in Q1 2025, which according to him marked a 240 percent increase over the same quarter.

Despite these gains, Awakan highlighted key challenges affecting tax administration, including inadequate public investment, limited institutional autonomy, technological gaps, and poor tax culture as he called for greater financial and operational independence for revenue services and investments in data-driven and technology-enabled tax systems.

He said, “We must reach the unreached, capture the untouched and tax the sector once considered negligible,” Awakan said. “But we must also ask: How do we do this without stirring the hornet’s nest or being tagged anti-masses?”

In a sideline interview, the Executive Secretary of the JTB, Olusegun Adesokan, assured that stakeholders will exhaustively brainstorm and come up with resolutions that will form a robust template that will enhance the nation’s economy.
