With the situation in the country, though it is not ideal for the struggling child, the God factor and tenacity make any dream possible”.

The guest lecturer, Dr Bayo Busari while speaking on the topic “Redirecting Youthful Energy towards Positive Self and National Development” identified unemployment, lack of access to education and health issues as some of the challenges facing the youths in the country.

He said, “Education enables young people to become active participants in society and make informed decisions about their lives. It empowers them to pursue their aspirations, develop their talents, and contribute to the betterment of their communities and the world. By equipping them with knowledge and skills, education helps them to navigate challenges and opportunities, both personal and professional. Education also cultivates creativity, innovation, and adaptability, allowing young people to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

“Education increases opportunities for social and economic participation, helping young people to overcome poverty and lead fulfilling lives. It provides access to better jobs and opportunities, allowing them to contribute to the growth and prosperity of their communities. Education helps build a more just and equitable society, where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential”.

He added that the piece narrated a journey from challenges to successes defying all odds through perseverance. He said the writing pattern embraces clear, plain and understandable choice of words with pictorial illustrations strategically positioned for clear messages.

He further recommended that the book is suitable to encourage teenagers on the importance of perseverance in the pursuit for growth. “It is certain that behind every success story, there are many ups and downs, challenges and obstacles confronted in the course of accomplishing the goals, it is against this background that I present to the public today “Defying Expectations: My Story of Perseverance from Conductor to Journalist”, a book authored by me which chronicles my struggles in the last 40 years.

Adeleke, Makinde begin peace moves over Oyo, Osun boundary disputes

Following inter-state communal war between communities in the Oyo and Osun states boundary, the governors of the two states, Ademola Adeleke and Seyi Makinde, have commenced peace moves.

The Nation recalled that the communal war started weeks ago, leading to the destruction of property, including the houses of chiefs, hence Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed, raised alarm after the escalation of the clash.

Subsequently, Adeleke in a statement through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed disclosed that Osun governor with his Oyo counterpart, Seyi Makinde have waded into the incessant border clashes between Lagelu and Iwo local governments of both states ahead the release of the report of the National Boundary Commission (NBC).

According to him, the two governors met over the dispute during the week and resolved on immediate actions which include a directive to the deputy governors of both states to meet and then visit the areas involved in the dispute.

“The resolution which was reached at the Ibadan residence of Governor Makinde emphasised the need for peaceful engagement and resolution of all outstanding issues, charging the Deputy Governors to meet leaders of Lagelu and Iwo communities involved in the confrontation.

“The deputy governors are also to look into other related boundary disputes, such as the recurring one between Orolu local government and Ogbomoso areas of the two states.”

He noted that the governors called for restraints and cessation of reported raids into each other’s territories by aggrieved parties, insisting on due process and the rule of law in conflict resolution.

“The National Boundary Commission had conducted a mediation visitation to the disputed areas to collate data from documentary and oral evidence to determine the exact boundary of the two states.

“The federal agency has, however, not released its report despite several follow-ups by the stakeholders, creating a vacuum being exploited by violating groups.

“In the last month, several villages in Iwo local government have been attacked, while the Lagelu groups also alleged attacks on their men and settlements.”

Rasheed said Adeleke at the meeting emphasised the historical linkage between the two states, declaring that we are one and we must peacefully resolve any outstanding issues.

“I commend my brother, Governor Seyi Makinde, on this proactive decision. Our deputy governors will take up the matter as a matter of urgency”, Governor Adeleke was quoted as saying.

Ibadan community begs Makinde to halt alleged plans to demolish ancestral village

Indigenes and residents of Olope Metta village in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State have appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to save their ancestral homes from demolition.

In a Save Our Soul letter signed by the village spokesman, Alhaji Kamardin Ayotunde, and Secretary, Mr. Moshood Tiamiyu, the community urged the governor to intervene and stop the state’s Ministry of Works from carrying out its planned demolition exercise.

The letter, addressed to Governor Makinde and made available to journalists on Wednesday in Ibadan, raised concerns over a recent 7-day demolition notice served on April 14, 2025, by the Ministry of Works.

The notice affects numerous buildings in the village, which is located along the old Oyo-Ibadan Road.

According to the villagers, the planned demolition targets scores of ancestral homes, business premises, and religious centres, allegedly for falling within the right of way for a federal highway project.

They claimed the new markings have extended beyond previously established boundaries, encroaching deeper into their village than ever before.

Describing the move as shocking and distressing, the community leaders pleaded with the governor to act swiftly to prevent the erasure of their heritage and displacement of residents who have lived in the area for generations.

The letter reads, “We are the true indigenes of Olope Metta. This village is our origin, and now they are trying to push us out of our ancestral land. The markings done this time are more extensive than the previous ones, and they have now marked virtually all the houses in our village for demolition.”

“Initially, when they came for the road expansion, they didn’t even enter the village. The pillars were placed outside, opposite our community, and none of our houses were affected. But now, every single home within the village has been marked. If this goes ahead, we will be rendered homeless and stripped of our heritage.

“We are appealing to our very active and responsive governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, to come to our aid. We are about to be left with no place to call our origin, no place to call home. Please, Governor Makinde, help us look into this matter before our entire village is wiped away.

“We are now calling on the government not to wipe away our village. They should take only the road and should not extend it to our village and houses. We are appealing to governor Seyi Makinde not to wipe away our village or demolish our houses.

“They are saying that they want to demolish houses that have been built more than fifty years ago. Our village is not within the marked area but we were surprised that they said they have secured approval to take over the village and demolish the houses here. With this new arrangement, they want to wipe away the whole village.

“They want to wipe away our village, this is our origin. Even if they want to construct two roads, there will still be lands, but they still say they want to take over the whole village. They have already taken over part of our village when they constructed the new Oyo- Ibadan Expressway, they have cut half of our village already and they say they want to take over the remaining part now.

“We are now appealing to the state government to rescind the decision. We are appealing to them not to take over the remaining part of our village. If they take over the remaining part, how do we prove that we are indigenes of the village. This is what we are calling on the government to do. It is either they relocate us, give us another lands or they leave us like they met us. They should not wipe this village outrightly.

“In addition to that. Olope Metta land is an ancestral land. More than 70 per cent of the land was taken over when the Ojoo Road was constructed, it is the remaining one that we are using. It is the remaining one that all the indigenes are sharing”.

Atiku’s coalition motive unknown to PDP, says Makinde

    • Party organs with PDP governors
    • Anyanwu kicks

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde yesterday shed light on the rejection of coalition, alliance and merger proposed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

He said the merger or coalition talks are unknown to the main opposition party.

The Oyo State governor said: “We didn’t just wake up and say me as xyz in the party just draw the party into any arrangements when the party organs do not have clue on what you are doing.

“They have no clue of what is in this coalition. They also have no clue whether this is personal or whether you are doing this in best interest of the party and the people of Nigeria. Those are critical.”

He spoke on a television programme.

The former vice president on March 20 at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, along with some others, including Malam Nasir EL-Rufai, declared the formation of a coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 election.

The governor reiterated the resolution of the PDP Governors’ Forum, which distanced itself from the coalition.

Defending the communique of the meeting, Makinde said the resolutions reflected the wide consultations with party stakeholders.

Emphasising that the Ibadan meeting was validated by the leadership of his party, he pointed out that the governors did not only meet as PDP Governors’ Forum, but they also invited the managers of the party.

He added: “The acting National Chairman, National Legal Adviser and the National Organizing Secretary were there with us. Other members of the NWC were waiting around the venue of the meeting, just in case there would be any need for them.

“We decided to tackle headlong the challenges within our party, and I’m quite glad we were able to make those decisions.”

Makinde added: “There must be a process. If the managers of the party, the organs of the party are going into a merger or coalition, there’s need for the managers of the party to know.

“But, if you have individuals, it is still within their right to associate with whoever they want to associate with. However, as a party, we haven’t gotten there. Our first assignment is to put the party on a sound pedestal.

“Politics is a game of interest. You must be interested, you must have alignment with the wider organs of your party before you go out to meet other people.”

The governors also rejected the claims by Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Monday Ude-Okoye to the position of the National Secretary.

But rejecting the Forum’s directive that the Deputy National Secretary, Setonji Koshoedo, should act as secretary in the interim, Anyanwu said it contradicted the judgment of the Supreme Court on the party’s leadership crisis.

I remain PDP national secretary, says Anyanwu

Anyanwu said the position of the National Secretary is not vacant, adding that he cannot be supplanted.

He said: “I remain the National Secretary of the PDP; this is not the first time that some people are trying a shortcut that falls short of the PDP constitution and contradicts the orders of the court.”

Anyanwu said those influencing the governors to remove him from office are not helping the party.

He said the Supreme Court judgment of March explicitly invalidated two previous judgments that those involved in the proxy war against him had relied upon.

He also pointed out that a subsisting Federal High Court order of January clearly restrains the PDP, its leaders, Deputy National Secretary, Koshoedo, or any other person from acting as the National Secretary.

Anyanwu said he would resume fully at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, insisting that there is no vacancy.

He added: “It seems that they deliberately want to kill the PDP today and tomorrow and blame Wike for it.

At the governors’ meeting, the party’s National Legal Adviser  told them that such decision on the position of PDP National Secretary is wrong, that the Supreme Court had spoken on the matter.”

Anyanwu said the copy of the Supreme Court judgment affirming his position as National Secretary has been submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by his lawyer.

Group to governors: leave Anyanwu alone

A group, ‘PDP Youth Group in the Southsouth,’ warned the governors against troubling Anyanwu, saying that they are creating tension in the party.

It accused the governors of hypocrisy, adding that five of them are supporting President Tinubu for a second term.

The group said in a statement: “Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s reinstatement by the Supreme Court in March 2025 confirms his position as the authentic National Secretary of the party, but some governors who are reportedly upset over his ties or friendship with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, are pushing for his ouster, even in ways contrary to the party’s constitution.”

I won’t be distracted, says Makinde

Speaking further on the programme, Makinde said he would not be distracted by the clamour in some quarters for him to run for President in 2027.

The governor said he would not allow anyone to set an agenda for him, adding that as of now, he remained committed to delivering infrastructure, policies and programmes that will make lives more meaningful for the people, which is the mandate given to him.

He maintained that though he has the capacity to occupy the highest position in the land, he would put into consideration what the Nigerian people want, what his political party wants and what would be in the best interest of the people.

He added that if his political journey ends with being governor of Oyo State, he would cherish the opportunity given to him by the people.

The governor maintained that his administration has been able to build road infrastructure and put in place adequate security across the state, noting that these are the enablers for the agribusiness success and economic expansion being witnessed.

He made a reference to his recent trip to France, saying that it was to finalise the deal to have a Food Wholesale Market established in Ijaiye by the Rungis International. He described the project and the Special Agro-Processing Zones springing up in Eruwa and Ijaiye as some of the gains of the agribusiness policy of the administration.

Makinde: Oyo’s economy thriving through tourism, Ibadan Airport set for international upgrade

Governor Seyi Makinde has affirmed that Oyo State is steadily achieving its economic expansion goals through tourism, describing the sector as a central pillar of his administration’s growth strategy.

Speaking on Saturday during the commissioning of Kunle Afolayan Productions’ Film Village and Resort in Igbojaye, Makinde revealed that the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan will welcome a wide-bodied aircraft before the year ends, a milestone that marks its transformation into an international airport.

The governor hailed the film village as a major milestone for the state, saying it reflects the success of Oyo’s deliberate focus on tourism.

He congratulated filmmaker Kunle Afolayan on the achievement and pledged full government support to ensure the project’s sustainability.

To enhance access to the facility, Makinde directed the Itesiwaju Local Government to begin immediate rehabilitation of the Okaka-Igbojaye Road.

He also announced plans to install a solar mini grid and a dedicated power line from Okaka to the resort.

Makinde called on both Nigerians and foreigners to invest in Oyo State, assuring that the state remains open to ventures that will add value to its economy.

Makinde said: “What a remarkable feat this is for my brother, Kunle Afolayan, the visionary whose project has brought us all together.

“I welcome everyone to Oyo State, the sanctuary of Yoruba culture and history. This particular project speaks directly to the heart of everything we are working towards in this state, particularly our drive for infrastructural development and expansion of our economy through key growth sectors, including tourism.

“I was explaining to the Minister of Creative Arts and Tourism, that in my first tenure, I put together a Roadmap for Accelerated Development, 2019-2023 which stood on four pillars of education, health, security and expansion of our economy through infrastructure development and agribusiness.

“When the people gave me the opportunity to come back for a second term, we produced another document known as the Roadmap for the Sustainable Development of Oyo State, 2023-2027 and we added tourism and solid minerals development as part of the channels through which we want to expand the state’s economy.

“So, this KAP Film Village is a testament that we are achieving the vision. This project represents a big win for Oyo State. Kunle Afolayan is not from Oyo State, but see what he has done in the state.

“For us in Oyo State, we want everyone that can add value to our state. So, no matter where you are from, please come and invest in Oyo State.

“Afolayan chose this place and what this project has achieved is that it has put this location, Igbojaiye, on the global map as far as tourism is concerned.

“As a government, we remain committed to creating the enabling environment for businesses to thrive. I will talk to the Commissioner for Energy to put in here a solar mini grid.

“Second, even if we have to take a direct electricity line from Okaka, which is only 23 kilometres away, to be dedicated to this place, we will do it. I will be here around Christmas and there must be a reliable electricity supply to this place by the time I come.

“Also, we are committed to rehabilitating the road leading here to ease access and improve connectivity.

“Thankfully, an international airport is being set up in Ibadan and the airside should be ready around October or November this year. We will receive a wide-bodied aircraft in Ibadan Airport around that time.

“I was planning a simple airstrip at Otu for security surveillance. We said we would put one in Otu and another in Igbeti. We are just about procuring the aircraft to utilise with the surveillance equipment. But now, I have also caught the vision; we are not only going to set up the airstrip for security surveillance, we will also add tourism.

“Quite frankly, from the Airport in Ibadan with a caravan aircraft, you are going to take about 20 minutes to get to Otu and another 15 minutes to get here. With the good road that we plan to build, we can get people here easily.

“Itesiwaju Local Government will fix the road from this film village all the way to Okaka. I will approve the cost of building the road in earnest.

“Let me reaffirm today that tourism remains a cornerstone of our economic strategy in Oyo State and because of our closeness to Lagos, our connectivity to the rest of the country and our ambition to have a regional airport in Ibadan, I think we are well on our way. We will do everything within our means to ensure that this film village and resort that we have just commissioned today will not only survive, it will thrive.”

Those in the entourage of the governor included the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun; Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade; Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Miss Wasilat Adegoke; Senior Executive Assistant to the Governor, Chief Bayo Lawal; Special Adviser on Security, CP Fatai Owoseni (rtd) and the Director-General of the Oyo State Investment Promotion Agency (OYSIPA), Mr Tilewa Folami.

Makinde has created a challenge for himself on 2027 – Commissioner

Oyo Commissioner for Information Prince Dotun Oyelade on Thursday said Governor Seyi Makinde has created a challenge for himself ahead of the 2027 election in terms of his successor.

He said there’s no doubting that Makinde’s impressive performance is setting a high standard for his successor, making the task of filling his shoes a daunting one.

According to the Commissioner, the Governor’s achievements have created a challenge for his successor, who will have to live up to the expectations of the people.

He spoke at the maiden matriculation of Impact Polytechnic at the school hall, Kolapo Ishola GRA, Ibadan.

Oyelade recounted that, in 2019 when the Makinde administration started, many thought that governance will be a huge challenge, given the hydra headed situation he met on the ground, particularly finance.

He pointed out the Governor had clearly shown that where there is a will, there is a way; much more so, when the way is driven by prudence, data, science and smartness.

He added that, the first four years of his administration set unprecedented records while the first two years of the second term surpassed those achievements.

He adedd that the general belief is that when an administration succeeds in its re-election bid, it becomes complacent to the promises it had made, noting that instead, the frenetic pace in the provision of infrastructures and keeping faith with the welfare of government workers has given the impression that Governor Makinde is running for a third term.

Oyelade noted that, even as an insider in the administration, he cannot but pity whoever will take over from Makinde in 2027.
