Bodija Explosion: Why there is delay in extraditing indicted Malians – Makinde

The Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde has attributed delay in extraditing three Malians indicted in the explosion that occured at Aderinola Street, off Adeyi Avenue, Bodija, Ibadan, last January to diplomatic issues caused by the breaking away of Mali from the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS).

Governor Makinde made the disclosure in a post, today, Saturday, February 24, on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, @seyiamakinde.

There was an explosion from stockpiled explosives on January 16, at Aderinola Street which led to the death of some people and destruction of several houses and other valuables.

The governor disclosed that preliminary investigation revealed that some identified illegal miners were the owners of the explosives and occupants of the Ground Zero building where the explosion occured.

Speaking on an illegal factory involved in mining operation shut down by his administration, Makinde used the opportunity to give an update on the Bodija explosion.

According to him, the closure of the illegal factory being operated by a Chinese firm and arrest of four of its workers was to prevent of the Bodija incident.

He said: “Let me take this opportunity to report that we are still trying to extradite the Malians indicted in the Bodija Incident who are on the run.

“We are having difficulties because Mali pulled out of ECOWAS. We will continue to deploy diplomatic means to ensure they are brought to book,” Makinde stated in the post.

The governor while speaking on the illegal factory involved in illegal mining at Idi Ayunre in Oluyole Local Goverment Area, Ibadan said he paid an impromptu visit to the factory following a tip off on the illegal mining activities going on there.

“In our efforts to prevent a recurrence of the Bodija Incident, we were at Idi Ayunre, following a tip off about a facility which was being used to process illegally mined minerals.

“I can report that those involved have been arrested and are in custody and we are working to prosecute them.

“Our government has also taken over the facility pending the investigations and prosecution.

“We were able to apprehend the culprits because the government and citizens worked together in a timely manner to bust their operations.

“Please continue to support our efforts to rid our state of illegal activities. If you see something, say something and the authorities will do something,” Makinde added in the post.

He however said “615 is the toll-free number to call when you notice any security breaches.”

He added that in line with the theme of the event, “competing for peace, unity, stability, and development of Nigeria,” the event is also to send a strong signal to Nigerians on the need for unity and stability.

    •  States got only N2b, says Oyo governor

Oyo State governor and Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), ‘Seyi Makinde, has said it is not true that the Federal Government gave each state N30 billion outside their statutory revenue allocations to address the current food insecurity challenges.

The governor was reacting yesterday to a claim by Senate President Godswill Akpabio that each state of the federation got additional N30 billion to address the economic challenges facing the country.

He said Oyo State had not received such money from either the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) or from the Federal Government.

Makinde spoke while inaugurating the newly-renovated multi-billion naira Iseyin Central Mosque facilitated by legal icon, Ahmed Raji (SAN).

The governor lauded the religious harmony in the state, saying it was exemplary.

He said: “This is a very difficult period in our nation’s history because all of us are aware of what we are going through economically. But for us as an administration, I can say we are the first in Nigeria to announce and implement measures on June 9, 2023 to cushion the effect of this policy through the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SafER).

“We have been doing our bit. And the reason I came here is for us to talk to ourselves and intensify prayers. So, this is one of the edifices through which we can reach God, though we have done our bit.

“We have health insurance for our people, we gave farm inputs to our farmers, but at this stage, we need to cry to God.

“For the workers, we have been paying a wage award: N25,000 for workers and N15,000 for pensioners, and we have paid for close to six months.

“Only last week, I announced an extension for another six months so that we can have the time to conclude the discussion on minimum wage.

“Well, we know there is much to be done and we will continue to do everything within our power to support our people through this hard time.

“This is not the time to play politics, as we have real issues that deserve real solutions. But yesterday, I saw the video and read in the news where the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, made a statement; though he said it was unverified report, stating that the state governments received additional N30 billion from the FIRS outside of our statutory allocation, in the last few months, to address food security.

“Please, listen to me loud and clear. I can speak for Oyo State and can also speak for any of my colleagues. This is because as the Vice Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum, I know when things are happening.

“If I wanted to play politics, I would keep quiet and let this slide. But I am not going to let this slide. The FIRS cannot give money to any state. It is not possible. All revenue accruing to the country goes into the Federation Account and it is distributed to all tiers of government. The Federal Government does not give states money. The money in the Federation Account belongs to all of us; it does not belong to the Federal Government alone.

“So, if the Senate President, who is the Number Three Citizen in this country, could be quoting an unverified report, people are looking at us as leaders. This is the period that we are supposed to give confidence to our people. It is not the period to start playing politics or to start looking for scapegoats.

“We need to engage with our people. If our policies are not working, we need to listen to the people and amend. So, if the Number Three Citizen had nothing but unverified report, why did he need to say it? Does his statement give confidence to the people or solve the problem of hunger and anger in the land?

“Let me say it clearly: as for Oyo State and for most of my colleagues, there is nothing like N30 billion being given to states for food security, and I stand to be challenged.

“Yes, the Federal Government promised the states N5 billion and, out of that, it only gave N2 billion and they are even asking that the N2 billion should be refunded right now.

“It is the responsibility of the Federal Government to manage the fiscal situation in Nigeria and manage the inflationary trend we have in the country right now.

“We have been transparent about everything we are doing here and this is the time for us to stay together as a nation to solve the problems we are facing. It is not the time to engage in blame games and propaganda. Hunger and anger are real and, as leaders, we must address them.”

Dignitaries at the event included the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, National Assembly members, top state government officials and members of Oke Ogun Traditional Council.

    • ’Minimum wage is way forward’

The leadership of labour unions in Oyo State has hailed Governor Seyi Makinde’s decision to extend the payment of wage award for workers and pensioners by another six months.

However, the unions said, in the face of current economic realities, wage award had outlived its usefulness, noting that minimum wage negotiation was the way forward.

The leaders, including Comrade Kayode Martins (Chairman, Nigerian Labour Congress); Comrade Bosun Olabiyi (Chairman, Trade Union Congress) and Comrade Seun Olaosebikan (Chairman, Joint Negotiations Council) spoke while reacting yesterday.

The Nation reports that Governor Makinde had last week announced the extension of the payment of the wage award during the inauguration of a road project.

The government had last October approved the payment of N25,000 and N15,000 to workers and pensioners. The initial six months is to end in April.

The labour leaders said although the move showed the forward thinking nature of the governor and his concern for the workers, if they had been consulted before the announcement, they would have advised on a better way of resolving it.

They said they would abide by whatever decision and agreement reached at the national level between the Federal Government and the national labour leaders on the minimum wage.

Comrade Martins said: “We want to appreciate the gesture of our amiable governor, Seyi Makinde. It shows he has us in mind and he is being proactive, but the situation on ground has really gone beyond that.

“We appreciate his gesture, notwithstanding, the situation in the country is tense and the N25,000 wage award has really cushioned the whole thing to a certain level, but in the current situation, things have really gone out of hand and whatever it takes, we will be ready to address the issue.

“Talking about the signal from the national body on proposed protest, since it is a national issue, Oyo State is not left out. We will abide by whatever directive that comes as per the protest against hardship in the country.”

Asked if the leaders were consulted by Governor Makinde before announcing the wage award extension, the NLC chairman said: “Ordinarily, if we had been contacted, maybe we would have suggested a better approach to have it done, but we were not aware, we just heard of it in the news.

“Hopefully, before the week runs out, the process of negotiation on the new minimum wage will begin from the national headquarters and you know that their conclusion and agreement are what we will build on at the state level. But, the signal is that the committee has started sitting and we are waiting for their resolve.

“It is a general issue in the country. Everybody can feel it. We are planning to have a two-day protest across the country to send the signal to those in authority that things are unconducive for the masses. So people should come out to join. We want people to come out. It is going to be a peaceful protest, but if the directive comes that we should sit at home, many people are already sitting at home; many people cannot afford fare to office anymore.

“So, the government has to take the opportunity to address the issues at once. It has lingered enough. It is a nationwide protest.”

Comrade Olabiyi said people were more interested in actions and activities that would have direct impact on their lives rather than needless meetings.

He said: “The only thing I will like to add is that things are very obvious now. What people want to see are activities, not meetings here and there.

“If you see a viral video of the TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo, it is not only in Oyo State that people will come to work on Monday and they will not leave until Friday, looking for where to sleep in the office.

“So, things have gone really bad. There are so many things to say, but I believe there will be a meeting, especially in Oyo State. Oyo State is our own, just as the governor always say, it is our own, it belongs to all of us. But, the issue on ground now, they are national issues, which everybody must be on the same page.

“I believe the same thing that is affecting us is also affecting everyone else. So, there are issues on ground, which we must look into. Just like the NLC Chairman said, we appreciate the extension of the wage award, but the issue on ground now is a little bigger than the extension of wage award. Things have really gone bad. See the prices of cement, see the prices of foodstuff.

“Wage award has gone. It has totally gone. It has outlived its usefulness. We need to put effort into the minimum wage, which should be a living wage, not just what someone will say, let me give people something so that they can go and keep quiet. So, whatsoever that is agreed upon from our national leadership is what we are going to do in Oyo State. People are suffering and it doesn’t need anybody to announce it any further. Government must do what will make life meaningful for the citizens.”

Future of Nigeria relies on you, Makinde tells Corps members

Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde has said the future of Nigeria rests on the shoulders of youths.

He said considering how sophisticated, energetic, able, learned and enlightened Nigerian youths are, they shouldn’t join the bandwagon of negativity against the nation.

Speaking at the Swearing-in ceremony of the 2024 Batch ‘A’ (Stream 1) Corps Members deployed to the State, the Governor, who was represented by Commissioner for Youth and Sport, Wasilat Adegoke, noted that youths should always be optimistic about the progress and success of Nigeria despite challenges facing the nation.

The Governor urged the new Corps members to offer themselves for camp activities and comply with camp rules and instructions from camp officials as against the popular “No gree for

anybody” slogan, saying “This is NYSC orientation camp, you must obey instructions.”

He said: “It is pertinent to let you know that you will experience the pluralistic nature of our country here. Endeavor to cohabit peacefully, accommodate and tolerate others, always remember our diversity is our identity and understanding binds us together as a nation.”

Oyo NYSC Coordinator Odoba Oche urged Corps members to see their call-up as a call to national service.

He said Nigeria cannot do without well-trained, mentally ventilated, enthusiastic, energetic and upwardly mobile youths that would power every aspect of national life for the much-needed development.

He stated that activities in the camp include physical training, paramilitary drills, intellectual engagements, citizenship and leadership grooming, lectures on Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) training all geared towards making Corps Members to live a well-ordered life and be self- reliant.

He said: “Dear Prospective Corps Members, the people of Oyo State are noted for their rich cultural heritage. And as you will soon discover, the Yorubas are a set of very accommodating, approachable, and generous people.

“There fore, I urge you to grab this unique opportunity of national service to learn about the Yoruba culture and ways of life. I also implore you as expected to do your part in contributing to the

unity, integration and advancement of Oyo state in particular and Nigeria in general throughout your Service Year.

“Let me also make it abundantly clear here that all Corps Members on camp must participate in all camp activities. The three-week period of the orientation exercise is replete with different activities that are aimed at realizing the objectives of the NYSC Scheme.

“It is instructive to note that participating assiduously in all these well-packaged physical and intellectual components of the orientation course is a time tested and effective way of preparing you for post-camp and post service year realities.

He spoke yesterday at the coronation and presentation of staff of office to the new Asigangan of Igangan, Oba Rafiu Adeniyi, (Ariwoola Aako II), held at Federal Government College, Igangan.

Speaking through his deputy, Bayo Lawal, the governor urged monarchs to be conversant with the activities of illegal miners in their domains, so as to expose such.

He said other forms of criminal activities such as banditry, kidnapping, among others thrive anywhere illegal mining activity is taking place.

Makinde said the government would not relent in the fight against insecurity, to protect lives and property of the people in Ibarapa and Oyo State at large.

Presenting the staff and instrument of office to the monarch, the governor said the Asigangan passed through the three stages established by the Chief Laws of Oyo State in the installation of new king without rancour.

He listed the stages established by the Chief Laws to include nomination of candidate by the royal family, investigation and adoption by the kingmakers and confirmation of the candidate by the governor.

Makinde reiterated that every other town awaiting the installation of new king must follow the due process and guidelines established by the laws.

Calling on the indigenes and residents of Igangan to rally round the new king, he, as well, appealed to the monarch to support the current administration in the state to fulfil its promises to provide all round development across the zones in the state.

Economic challenges: PDP governors working on plan for Nigeria – Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has elected governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the aegis of PDP Govenors’ Forum will soon come up with an action plan that will help salvage the current hardship been faced in the country.

He charged Nigerians to keep their heads up despite the difficult times and join hands with the leaders to make the country great again.

Apparently reacting to the recent backlash of the PDP governors over allegations of owing workers and pensioners salaries in their various state, Governor Makinde noted that despite criticism against the PDP Governors’ Forum, that recently spoke out on the situation in the country, he and his colleagues will remain undeterred but focus on impacting on the people.

The governor spoke over the weekend while commissioning the 12.5 kilometres Challenge-Odo Ona Elewe-Apata Road which he also renamed Theophilus Akinyele Road, Ibadan.

He said the PDP governors recently met and deliberate so much on the economic hardship the people are facing with the intent of coming up with a plan and solution that will help the people overcome the challenges of the time.

He added that the realities of the time, no matter how anyone tries to paint it, requires that certain things be done saying the PDP governors and the party, in a matter of time will bring forward a plan that will help the country, if it is adopted.

He noted that the move will again demonstrate that the party cares more about the progress of the people than they do about politics

Makinde said: “Let me use this opportunity to talk about the meeting we had a few days ago. We the Governors of the PDP met in Abuja and one of the key issues we discussed was the economic hardship our people are facing.

“Our focus this time is to help our people overcome the challenges of the time. Some people can continue to play politics and tell lies about how things are, it does not matter.

“I read a piece where some people said FAAC has doubled for states and local government areas. I think it is just a lazy way to situate things. We must be talking about baking a bigger cake.

“Why are we even going to Abuja in the first instance to share FAAC? Were they doing that in the First Republic? Yes, FAAC has moved up from about N6bn per month to about N8bn monthly but the responsibilities of government have also increased.

“We all know the reality of the time, no matter how anyone tries to paint it. And, in the weeks and months to come, our dear party will propose an action plan that we believe would work for our nation when adopted.

“In doing this, we again demonstrate that we care more about the progress of our people than we do about politics. It is just like here in Oyo State where we fix roads that have economic importance whether they belong to the state or federal.”

He added that in spite of the economic hardship, his government has been able to sustain its focus of building infrastructure that targets its economic expansion agenda and makes life more meaningful for residents of the state.

He noted that the government’s various road projects are ways of attracting prosperity for residents of the state and bring development to the state as a whole.

“When we commission projects, we often go back to see the impact such projects have on the lives of our people. For most of them, a road project like this is the difference between being able to quickly go from their homes to the market or spending hours in traffic.

“This particular road is cutting down travel time by, at least, 30 minutes for some people. So, when we say where roads go, development follows, we are simply stating the fact.

“We are also mindful of the fact that our people want more. We know things have been tough, so we promise to do more. It may not be as fast as you want it to happen but, surely, we will get to our destination by the grace of God.”
