    Makinde presents N434.2bn budget for 2024

    Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde, has presented a total budget of N434,221,765,938.79 for the 2024 fiscal year.

    The figure is made up of a capital expenditure of NN222,337,320,199.85 and a recurrent expenditure of N211, 884, 445, 728.95.

    He christened the 2024 budget as “Budget of Economic Recovery.”

    According to Makinde, the capital expenditure is 2.4 percent higher than the recurrent expenditure.

    The governor said the budget estimates an increased Internally Generated Revenue of N72 billion with an average of N6 billion monthly.

    Education got the highest budget share N90, 664, 994, 252 (20.88 percent). It is followed by infrastructure which got N74, 316, 325, 706 (17.11 percent); health has N40, 998, 197, 758.30 (9.44 percent) and Agriculture had N15, 848, 707, 310.80 (3.65 percent)

    The governor presented the budget on Tuesday to the 32-member House of Assembly at an event with top government functionaries, traditional rulers, and political office holders among others in attendance.

    He said the government will continue to use technology to block loopholes, noting that the government has no plan to increase taxes.

    He assured that the budget will cover projects, policies, and actions which when implemented will cushion the effect t of the hardship the people are facing due to fuel subsidy removal.

    Oyo State House of Assembly yesterday said it was ready to receive next year’s Budget from Governor Seyi Makinde

    Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin gave the assurance of the readiness during the plenary proceeding, saying all is set to receive the governor and the budget proposal.

    In his announcement, while reading message from the Executive, the governor had written to inform the House about his readiness to present the budget on December 5.

    The Nation reports that Makinde had also earlier last Wednesday disclosed his plans and intentions to present the budget to the House of Assembly.

    The House, however, adjourned its sitting till December 5.

    At the event, the governor is expected to present the budget proposal before the 32-member House of Assembly, accompanied by top government functionaries.

    The wife of Oyo Governor Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde has commended the Oyo chapter of Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) for distributing palliatives to wives and children of Police officers who died on duty.

    She said effort of the deceased Police officers towards ensuring safe and secure society while alive can not be overemphasised which explains why their families must be taken care of.

    Speaking at the annual distribution of welfare package to Police widow/end of the year party organised by Oyo POWA, Mrs. Makinde thanked POWA for not forgetting wives and children of the fallen heros.

    She said the palliatives should not be limited to wives and children of late Police officers alone, adding that widowers of late Police officers should also be included as beneficiaries.

    According to her: “Today, Oyo POWA is empowering and distribute palliatives items to families of Police officers who are falling heros and have paid supreme price of death in ensuring our community is save and secure.”

    “This event is real demonstration of our national anthem which says ‘the labour of our heros past shall never be in vain’.

    “To the family of the falling heros, the sacrifice of your loved ones are appreciated, be strong, I pray that God will continue to keep you and your children.”

    She thanked supporting partners of the programme, saying their efforts would have positive impact on families of the late Police officers.

    POWA chairperson in Oyo State, who is also the wife of the Commissioner of Police, Dr. Abidemi Hamzat, said the body is a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) that provides humanitarian support to wife and children of Police officers across the nation.

    She stated that aim of the body is to overcome challenges threatening unity of it’s members, adding that Oyo POWA has ensure full compliance to the aims and objectives of the body towards enhancing welfare of it’s members.

    Makinde mourns as three traditional rulers died in road accident

    Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed grief over the death of three traditional rulers from Oriire Local Government Area state, in a road accident on Friday, December 1.

    The traditional rulers; Olodogbo of Odogbo, Onibowula of Bowula and Alayetoro of Ayetoro, were said to be on their way to a social function when the car conveying them had a head on collision with a truck.

    Governor Makinde, who described the news of the royal fathers’ demise as shocking, expressed condolences to their immediate families, the people of Oriire Local Government and Ogbomosoland as well as the Council of Obas and Chiefs in the state.

    He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased, while also praying that God would grant their immediate families, their subjects and the state as a whole the fortitude to bear the loss.

    The governor said: “It is a very sad and saddening development. We can only pray that the Almighty God will grant repose to their souls and grant their families, their subjects and the whole state the fortitude to bear the loss.”

    Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu has been honoured with an award of selfless service to humanity by the Council of Bishops in Nigeria.

    He was honored alongside the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, his Cross River State, Borno State, Oyo and Ogun State counterparts, Bassy Otu, Prof. Babagana Zulum, Seyi Makinde, Dapo Abiodun amongst others.

    The award ceremony which held at the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja on Friday during the “National Solemn Assembly: A Day of Praise, Worship and Thanksgiving to God for Nigeria” had the President, Charismatic Bishop Conference of Nigeria and Charman National Solemm Assembly, Archbishop (Professor) Bature Cawas; the Vice charman, National Solemm Assembly/CAN Secretary Benue state, Bishop Dr. Chivir Chianson and the Secretary, National Solemm Assembly/ CAN Director, Legal & Public Affairs, Dame (Barr) Comfort Otera Chigbue as conveners.

    Giving the award to Dr. Jerry Nwohu, a security expert and political strategist who represented Kalu at the event, the body of conveners said the award was for selfless service to humanity from the charismatic Bishops in Nigeria and coalition of Christian association of Nigeria.

    They added that the recognition was a testament to Kalu’s dedication, commitment, and impactful contributions to better the lives of others, stressing that his remarkable efforts and service-oriented approach have undoubtedly made a significant difference.

    In his reaction to the award, Nwohu said that Kalu, has since his emergence as public servant garnered widespread recognition for his steadfast dedication to upholding the principles of honour, integrity, and service.

    “His unwavering commitment to the pursuit of public service has earned him yet another award, this instance originating from the revered Council of Bishops in Nigeria.

    “The eminent persona of the Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, characterised by unwavering integrity and unwavering commitment, profoundly resonates with the principles cherished by the esteemed Council of Bishops. The recent acknowledgment of his societal contributions further contributes to the plethora of accolades that underscore his commendable stewardship and altruistic dedication to the well-being of fellow individuals.

    “This esteemed recognition arrives at a momentous juncture as Deputy Speaker Kalu prepares for his highly anticipated homecoming on the 28th and 29th of December 2023.     Also speaking, Rear Admiral Ilesanmi Alade (rtd) exolled Kalu’s leadership virtues, describing him as a detribalized Nigerian who has embraced the whole country as his political constituency.

    He added that Kalu’s poise to serve Nigeria in his capacity as the deputy speaker of the House has been well noted.

    “The award given to Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu by the National Solemn Assembly on Friday, 1st December 2023 is a testament of his enviable political character and rising profile in nation building. I was privileged to witness the encomium showered on the Number 6 citizen of Nigeria and my sincere feeling was that Rt. Hon Deputy Speaker is emerging as a figure for national unity.     Oyo gov, sports commissioner to grace YSFON U-16 final in Ibadan

    The governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, the state’s Commissioner of Youth and Sports, Wosilat Adegoke and other top government are expected to grace the finals of the maiden YSFON/Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resorts U-16 Boys Championship.

    The finals to be decided Saturday will be  played between Ilaji FC and Ekiti State team.

    To get to the finals, Ilaji FC defeated Sanusi FC 2-0, while Ekiti defeated their counterparts from Kwara state by 2-1 to play.

    Prior to the finals, sponsor of the tournament who also doubles as the CEO of Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resort Center, Dotun Sanusi presented sets of jerseys to the organisers of the tournament.

    Sanusi who was represented by the Chief Operating Officer of the Hotel, Prince Adesina Araoye stated that the decision was borne out of the zeal to promote grassroots football even as he commended YSFON for their efforts at grassroots football development.

    “These jerseys are just a token of our appreciation to YSFON for what they’re doing in developing talented youths in football and we hope that these jerseys will go a long way in motivating the players”, he said

    Receiving the jerseys on behalf of the National President of YSFON, Dr. Nasiru Gawuna, the Federation’s Vice President South/ West, Abayomi Rafiu Alabi and  the Secretary General of YSFON, Patrick Okpavuerhe commended the sponsor for the donation with an appeal to other corporate organisations to emulate him and help in grassroots football development.

    Oyo State Government has formally announced the presentation of staff of office and coronation of the new Aseyin of Iseyin, ?ba Sefiu Olawale Oyebola, Adeyeri III, Ajirotutu I and the Soun of Ogbomoso, ?ba Afolabi Ghandi Laoye, Orumogege III.

    According to a statement by the Commissioner for information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Aseyin coronation will hold on December 14, 2023 while that of Soun will be on December 19, 2023.

    The state government had set up a coronation committee headed by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi, including the commissioners: Mr Segun Olayiwola (Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters), Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun (Culture and Tourism), Prince Dotun Oyelade (Information and Civic Orientation) and the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security, Commissioner of Police (retired) Sunday Odukoya as members of the committee.

    The committee has been holding meetings with coronation committees from the two palaces over the past few weeks and have undertaken inspections of the venues for the events.

    “All is now set for the big events. The state government hereby seizes this opportunity to enjoin the public to show full support for the success of the events”, the statement added.

    Wife of Oyo Governor Mrs Tamunominini Makinde and Oyo Police Command have sought collaboration of residents to end every form of gender-based violence.

    The duo urged people across the State to join hands in fighting sexual harassment and gender- based violence.

    Speaking at a briefing to mark the 16-days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Mrs Makinde stated the gathering was not only to raise awareness but also to consolidate steps already taken by the State Government towards ending gender- based violence in the society.

    She said the 16 Days of Activism serves as a reminder that fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) requires not only attention but people’s unwavering support, adding that it should be a call to action for the society to unite against the issue of violence that has affected many lives.

    She said,: “Let us encourage people to speak up if they have experienced any violence. It is also important to listen if someone wants to tell about having experienced any form of violence and report to the authorities so that the perpetrators do not go unpunished.

    “In 2020, Family Court was commissioned to deal with matters relating to child rights, marital issues and other related matters in

    State. Also, in 2021, the Oyo Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, assented to the Violence Against Persons Prohibition 2021(VAPP)

    which addresses the issues of men, women, boy-child and the girls.

    “There is a toll free number; 0800-400-4040n Oyo State, to report cases of gender based violence. Calls to that number are swiftly responded and identity of callers is usually kept secret.

    “Since the inception of this administration in 2019, my office has constantly supported survivors of GBV financially because financial empowerment is an important aspect of rebuilding lives, we are set to financially support them again today.

    “This gesture emphasises my belief in importance of visible and immediate

    support for those affected by gender-based violence by providing financial assistance, we hope to ease some of the burdens they carry and empower them to rebuild their lives.”

    Mrs. Makinde also donated cash gifts of N100,000 each for the survivors whose age are 3, 9, 10, 13, 14, 14, 16, 17, 19 and 23.

    Commissioner of Police Adebola Hamzat warned perpetrators of child molestation in the State to desist, saying whoever is caught in the act shall face the full wrath of the law.

    He stated that police will never allow any case of child molestation to be swept under the carpet, adding that such case will be attended to and treated as criminal matters to ensure justice is delivered to the survivors or victims.

    According to him: “The era of thinking that been a member of a family, you can do anything unlawful and go with it is no more, no family connection can protect you from been prosecuted if you commit any gender based violence either to your child or relations.

    “We have gotten a lot of cases particularly those that have to do with child molestations by relatives, we have recorded about 73 cases this year, we have sent about 62 cases to court and they have been prosecuted while 11 are under investigation, for these 62 cases currently in court, we have 83 suspects who are standing trials.”

    Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde, has approved the appointments of special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants and board chairmen across portfolios, Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

    The appointments were announced in a letter signed by the Chief of Staff to the governor, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi, dated 29 November, 2023.

    This is just as the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, is to combine the role of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media with his current portfolio.

    The names and portfolios of the fresh appointments are as follows:

    Oloye Suraj Abiodun- Special Adviser (Education Intervention), Dr Nureni Aderemi Adeniran- Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr Gbola Adetunji- Chairman, Oyo State Agency for the Control of AIDS (OYSACA), Alhaji Murtala Ahmad- Special Assistant (Community Relations) I, Arewa Community, Nwosu Innocent- Senior Special Assistant (Community Relations) 2, Igbo Community, Saka Moshood Olawale- Senior Special Assistant (OYSIEC), Hon. Yemi Taiwo- Chairman, Oyo State Library Board and Hon. Rauf Adekunle- Chairman, Oyo State Pension Board.

    Market leaders to Makinde: ratify Konibaje as Iyaloja-General

    Eight of the 12 existing market clusters in Oyo State have jointly sent an open letter to Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde over raging controversy on the Iyaloja-General of the State.

    The letter, dated November 20, 2023 was signed by 10 of the 12 market leaders in the State.

    There has confusion over who is the rightful Iyaloja-General of the State between Alhaja Saratu Aduke Konibaje and Princess Folashade Abeo.

    The market leaders in their letter to the Governor appealed to him to ensure immediate ratification of the nomination-cum-election of Alhaja Saratu Aduke Konibaje as Iyaloja-General.

    The letter titled: “Appeal for prompt ratification of nomination of Alhaja Saratu Aduke Konibaje as Iyaloja-General of Oyo State”, was jointly signed by the Oyo State Market Leaders’ Council including their President, Alhaji Dauda Abiodun Oladepo; the Vice President, Mogaji Salaudeen Qarmardeen; the Second Vice President, Chief Mrs. Stella Olabode; the Financial Secretary, Chief Mrs Labake Lawal and the Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Yisau Kolayode Hamzat; 

    Others were both ex-Officio Alhaja Hamdalat Iyadunni Lawal and Alhaji Azeez Amole Najimdeen; alongside three other members, Chief Mrs Odunayo Kayode Danjuma; Alhaji Malik Adebayo Babasale and Alhaja Fausat Adebiyi, respectively.

    Only the Treasurer, Chief Mrs Juliana Titilayo Raimi and a member, Alhaji Sunmaila Aderemi Jimoh did not sign the document sent to the Governor.

    All the leaders disowned the alleged claimant to the title Princess Folashade Abeo.

    Their letter read in parts: “We respectfully wish to call the attention of Your Excellency to the crisis that the pending ratification of appointment of Iyaloja General of Oyo State has been causing in the state.”

    “The issue had been heating up the polity and if not timely concluded could degenerate into chaos, more media war and civil unrest in the state.”

    “We also wish to mention that our informal sector in the State constitutes more than 60% to the economy and, allowing crisis in such sector could be brutal and unbearable to the state.”

    “Your Excellency would recall, that you approved the inauguration of the Council in March, 2022 as the highest traders’ group in the State and we have been working hard to ensure that we contribute our quota to the development and growth of the economy of the State as well introducing new innovations to our our dear station on the pedestal of development. Part of the innovation is the nomination of Alhaja Saratu Adunni Konibaje as Iyaloja General of the State.”

    “The Council during its meeting on Thursday, April 6th, 2022 commenced the process that would lead to the appointment of Iyaloja General in the State. The duo of Alhaja (Princess) Azeezat Folashade Nurudeen and Alhaja Saratu Aduke Konibaje were nominated during the Council meeting and election was held.”

    “Alhaja Aduke Konibaje polled a total vote of 7 while Alhaja (Princess) Azeezat Folashade Nurudeen scored 2 votes which showed that Alhaja Saratu Aduke Konibaje clearly won the election.”

    “To our dismay, the Ministry of Trade claimed to have forwarded the result of the peaceful election to Your Excellence for ratification as appropriate, but we are yet to receive any information regarding the issuance of Certificate and other instruments of Office to her, talk less of assuming duty as expected.”

    “To this end, we are using this medium to appeal to Your Excellency to please, promptly ratify the nomination of Alhaja Saratu Aduke Konibaje as Iyaloja General of Oyo State. This will not only douse the tension in the State but would also fast track the economic development of our dear State.”
