EPL: Man City end winless run as Chelsea crash at Everton

Manchester City survived a scare at Luton to end their four-match winless run in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory, while Chelsea’s problems mounted with a 2-0 defeat at Everton.

Tottenham won for the first time in six matches as Richarlison’s double inspired a 4-1 rout of dismal Newcastle.

With star striker Erling Haaland absent due to injury, City trailed to Elijah Adebayo’s goal late in the first half at Kenilworth Road.

But, after squandering a host of chances, Pep Guardiola’s side finally clicked into gear with two goals in three minutes after the break.

Bernardo Silva equalised and Jack Grealish bagged the winner to give City a much-needed first victory in five league matches.

After their lethargic 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa on Wednesday, which followed draws with Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham, City were in danger of falling out of the title race.

Liverpool’s win at Crystal Palace on Saturday had moved the leaders seven points clear of City.

But fourth-placed City responded with a gritty display to close the gap on Liverpool to four points.

City still have work to do to regain control of their bid for an unprecedented fourth successive top-flight title and Haaland’s fitness scare could not have come at a worse time.

Haaland, who had started all of City’s league matches this season, was sidelined with a foot injury that could impact his availability for the treble winners’ hectic Christmas schedule.

“The most important thing to change the dynamic is winning games. That helps a lot,” Guardiola said.

“We didn’t get results sometimes when we deserved, but that’s what it is. Today was a good test. We did it perfect.”

Everton continued to shrug off the impact of a 10-point deduction as victory over Chelsea took the Toffees four points clear of the relegation zone.

Abdoulaye Doucoure opened the scoring at Goodison Park before Lewis Dobbin’s first Everton goal imposed another damaging defeat on Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Without the penalty for breaching financial rules, which Everton are appealing, Sean Dyche’s men would be four points above Chelsea in mid-table.

Pochettino shuffled his pack after a dreadful display in losing 2-1 at Manchester United in midweek.

But the Argentine is struggling to solve his side’s lack of a clinical edge up front, despite the club having spent £1 billion ($1.3 billion) on new players in the past three transfer windows.

“This was a game to win. It’s a problem we need to check. We need to talk and to try and improve in the next transfer market,” Pochettino said.

Since topping the Premier League after beating Crystal Palace on October 27, Tottenham had lost four of their next five games to squander the momentum from their blistering start to the season.

Ange Postecoglou’s attacking tactics were branded as naive during that losing run, but the Australia stuck to his guns and was rewarded with a goal-spree at Newcastle’s expense.

Destiny Udogie put Tottenham ahead in the first half in north London and Brazil striker Richarlison doubled the lead before the break.

Richarlison netted again in the second half and Son Heung-min converted a late penalty as fifth-placed Tottenham moved within three points of fourth-placed Manchester City.

Joelinton’s goal in the final seconds was no consolation for outclassed Newcastle.

Fulham ran riot for the second time in a week as they thrashed West Ham 5-0 at Craven Cottage.

Just four days after Fulham beat Nottingham Forest by the same scoreline, Marco Silva’s side turned on the style again.

Raul Jimenez opened the scoring to take his personal tally to four in five games having previously not scored a Premier League goal since March 2022 for Wolves.

Willian and Tosin Adarabioyo netted for Fulham before the interval, with a fine effort from Harry Wilson and a late tap-in from Carlos Vinicius completing the London derby demolition.

Haaland and Foden score as Man City beat Man Utd

Man City cruised past Manchester United with embarrassing ease in the derby at Old Trafford to emphasise the vast gulf between the two sides.

Erling Haaland was the main tormentor with goals in each half before setting up a third for Phil Foden as Pep Guardiola’s side established superiority from the kick-off and rarely looked like relinquishing control.

There were poignant scenes before the start as supporters from both sides of Manchester’s footballing divide joined to pay tribute to the late Sir Bobby Charlton.

For manager Erik ten Hag and his players, the match that followed was one to forget.

Haaland put City ahead from the penalty spot after 26 minutes when Rasmus Hojlund was penalised for dragging down Rodri following the intervention of the video assistant referee.

United keeper Andre Onana produced a brilliant save to deny Haaland a second from a far-post header on the stroke of half-time but the striker did not have to wait long to double City’s lead from an almost identical situation four minutes after the break, Bernardo Silva delivering a perfect cross.

City keeper Ederson also excelled to save from Scott McTominay before half-time but City wrapped up this most convincing victory when Haaland set up the easiest of chances for Foden 10 minutes from time.

EPL: Haaland on target as Man City beat Brighton

Manchester City avoided a third consecutive Premier League defeat as two first-half goals secured victory over Brighton at Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side had lost their previous two top-flight matches—away to Wolves and Arsenal – and have never recorded three consecutive league defeats under the Spaniard.

The defending champions showed their intent early on as Julian Alvarez opened the scoring after just seven minutes, floating an effort over the head of Brighton keeper Jason Steele after a delightful run and cut-back from Jeremy Doku.

Erling Halaand ended a run of three matches without a goal 10 minutes later as he pounced on a Carlos Baleba mistake in the middle of the park and sent a thunderous left-footed shot into the back of the net.

A more composed second half from the visitors saw Ansu Fati capitalise on a poor Manuel Akanji clearance inside the penalty area.

The goal made for a nervy final period as City clung on and Brighton pushed for an equaliser with City forced to see out stoppage time with 10 men when Akanji was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Doku was a constant threat throughout down the left-hand side, setting up Alvarez for the opener and twice going close with long-range curling efforts.

Argentine forward Alvarez had the opportunity for a second with a curling free-kick and Phil Foden was unlucky not to see his effort nestle in the top corner.

The victory moves City top of the Premier League before Arsenal face Chelsea later on Saturday.

UCL: Alvarez, Doku helps Man City cling late win against Leipzig

Defending champions City, who came into the game on the back of losses to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup and Wolves in the Premier League, looked in complete control in the first half.

Phil Foden gave them a deserved lead with a difficult shot on the bounce following a cutback by Rico Lewis, who impressed in a central midfield role.

Leipzig scored with their only shot on target, as Lois Openda raced onto a through ball before slotting the ball past Ederson via the inside of the post.

But it was all City from then with Foden hitting the post with a free-kick and Erling Haaland missing a host of chances.

Five minutes after coming off the bench, Alvarez lifted a perfectly weighted shot into the top corner from the edge of the box following a pass by Doku.

The Argentine then found Doku in space and he sped away to score a late third and seal the points.

City have now equalled the longest European unbeaten run by an English club – level on 16 with Leeds (1967-1968), Tottenham (1967-1972), Chelsea (2018-2019) and West Ham, whose run started last year and is still going too.

They will be relieved to get back to winning ways as they prepare to visit title rivals Arsenal on Sunday.

Man City, United shocked by Wolves, Crystal Palace

Manchester City‘s perfect start to the Premier League season came undone in a shock 2-1 loss to Wolves, as Manchester United slumped to a 1-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

City had won the opening six games of their title defence as they aim to become the first side to ever claim four consecutive English top-flight titles.

By contrast, Wolves had taken just four points from their first six games but stunned the champions at Molineux.

Ruben Dias’ own goal put the home side in front, but City responded after the breakthrough of Julian Alvarez’s free-kick.

Wolves, though, were a constant threat on the counter-attack and got their reward when Hwang Hee-chan swept home at the second attempt 25 minutes from time.

“We have to do more but even when we win we have to do more,” said City boss Pep Guardiola, who watched the game from the stands due to suspension.

EPL: Man City’s perfect start ends in defeat at Wolves

Wolverhampton Wanderers ended Manchester City’s perfect start to the Premier League season as they dealt the leaders their first defeat of the campaign.

Ruben Dias knocked a Pedro Neto cross into his own net after the Wolves winger raced through the City defence, comfortably easing past Nathan Ake.

City continually struggled to cope with Neto’s pace on the wings as Wolves applied pressure in the first half.

The visitors trailed at the break but quickly responded when Julian Alvarez curled a free-kick past Jose Sa.

But Hwang Hee-chan restored Wolves’ lead, coolly tucking home after Matheus Cunha found him unmarked in the box.

Pep Guardiola’s men remain top of the table despite defeat, but could be knocked off their perch if Liverpool beat Tottenham in Saturday’s late game.

Wolves are 13th with seven points from seven matches.

Second-half goals from Jeremy Doku, Bernardo Silva, and Erling Haaland helped Manchester City come from behind to beat in-form West Ham and continue their winning start to the Premier League season.

James Ward-Prowse’s diving header gave the Hammers the lead against the run of play, but Doku’s first City goal restored parity 43 seconds after the interval.

Silva then collected Julian Alvarez’s looping ball over the top of the West Ham defence before calmly prodding past the onrushing Alphonse Areola.

Haaland, who had squandered several earlier opportunities, completed the scoring at London Stadium with a trademark finish.

“All game we were fantastic, even when we were losing at half-time against an incredible side,” City manager Pep Guardiola told BBC Sport. “We were efficient and patient in the second half.

“It was a big win after the international break. The team showed good spirit to survive.”

City maintain their two-point lead over Tottenham and Liverpool at the top of the table, while West Ham drop to sixth thanks to their first defeat of the campaign.

There was little wrong with City’s first-half display, but, despite registering 17 shots before the break, they could not find a way past Areola and West Ham’s deep-lying rearguard.

European champions Manchester City will face Club Leon of Mexico or Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals in December in Saudi Arabia.

In the other semi-final, the Copa Libertadores winners, yet to be decided, will face Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad, Auckland City of New Zealand or Egypt’s Al Ahly.

As yet there are no previous holders in this year’s edition. Internacional of Brazil are the only previous winners who could still take the final available place in the competition.

Julian Alvarez opened the scoring for City, before Tim Ream equalised for Fulham minutes later.

Nathan Ake then made it 2-1 with a highly contentious goal, as Manuel Akanji was deemed to not be interfering with play following a video assistant referee check, a decision that left Fulham’s players and manager Marco Silva furious.
