  • Pep: Man City will get better

Pep Guardiola has warned Manchester City’s Premier League rivals that his side will only “get better and better” as the season goes on.

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva gave the Citizens a deserved 2-0 victory over Arsenal in their opening match on Sunday afternoon.

Guardiola believes that City produced the ‘perfect performance’ at the Emirates Stadium, despite not being at full strength due to the number of their players who arrived back late for training in a World Cup summer.

Asked if it was a perfect display from his side, the Catalan told BBC Sport: “Yes. We have a lot of players with a lack of condition but we are more than two seasons together and know what to do. We made a good performance in general and day by day we will get better and better.

“I am privileged to be manager of Manchester City. We try to do our best always.

Manchester City have given me a fantastic squad. I cannot complain for one minute.”

City are unbeaten in their last 10 opening Premier League fixtures, winning the last eight in a row.

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has put his side’s defeat to Manchester City down to a ‘lack of invention’ in the final third of the field.

The Gunners succumbed to a 2-0 loss at the Emirates Stadium in manager Unai Emery’s first match in charge, courtesy of goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva either side of half time.

City always looked the more likely to score with the game poised at 1-0, but Cech believes that a point was there for the taking if his teammates took more of a gamble early in the second half.

“We feel that we could have got something from the game,” he told BBC Sport. “In the second half, we forced them to make mistakes and we had some opportunities. Unfortunately, we lacked invention to find the killer pass.

“When you play against a team of City’s quality and confidence it is always going to be difficult. Inevitably, you can make a few mistakes. It was a shame we couldn’t finish off our counter-attacks and overall we’re disappointed with the defeat.”

Arsenal have just two victories in their last nine opening weekend Premier League games, drawing three and losing three.

  • Roma upset Barcelona, Liverpool demolish City

Roma staged a stunning comeback from 1-4 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions quarter final pairing with Barcelona to beat the former champions and the Spanish leaders 3-0 and qualify for the semi-finals on goals aggregate.

Bosnia’s Edin Dzeko started Roma revival in the 6th minute and in the second half, De Rossi scored via a penalty and Manolas completed the coup de grace with a stunning header in the 82nd minute.

The unexpected turnaround turned the fans at Stadio Olimpico into wild jubilation.

Liverpool at Etihad Stadium completed their demolition of Manchester City, cruising to the semi-finals on 5-1 goal aggregate, after surviving a nightmarish first half, in which City scored their only goal in two minutes.

The victory marked the first time since 2008 that Liverpool would qualify for the semi-final of the competition.

  • Man City held at Burnley after late Gudmundsson equaliser

Man City held at Burnley after late Gudmundsson equaliser

Premier League leaders Manchester City paid the price for missed chances as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Burnley on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s 82nd minute equaliser ensured that the hosts earned a share of the spoil at Turf Moor.

City had dominated possession throughout most of the game, which they strolled through for large spells.

But after taking the lead with a beautiful strike from Brazilian Danilo in the 22nd minute, they failed to press home their advantage.

Raheem Sterling produced one of the misses of the season – somehow putting the ball wide just one metre out from the empty goal and Burnley made the most of that let-off.

City extended their lead to 16 points over second-placed rivals Manchester United, who were hosting Huddesfield Town later on Saturday. City now have 69 points from 26 games.

City manager Pep Guardiola, without the injured David Silva, Leroy Sane and Gabriel Jesus, named only six substitutes including club record signing Aymeric Laporte, signed for a club record 57 million pounds last week.

In an attacking line-up, Burnley boss Sean Dyche gave winger Aaron Lennon his first start since joining from Everton.

City went ahead when a short corner was worked to Danilo and, enjoying plenty of space, the Brazilian unleashed an unstoppable drive from outside the area.

The Clarets were struggling to create openings but when Jack Cork looped the ball into the area, it fell to defender Ben Mee whose volley forced a good save from Ederson.

Former City youth team player Mee had another half-chance minutes later but his header from a corner flashed just wide.

City showcased their quality in the 39th minute with a flowing move from the back, ending with a powerful drive from Kevin De Bruyne which keeper Nick Pope did well to keep out.

After the break, there was almost a repeat of the opening goal when City again found Danilo from a corner but this time the full back’s shot was tipped over by Pole.

Somehow Burnley was still in the game and they came close to leveling when a fine Lennon strike was pushed against the woodwork by Ederson.

That brought the game to life and City pushed forward with increased urgency and should have doubled their leads when Kyle Walker played the ball across the face of goal and somehow Sterling put it wide from point-blank range.

City was made to pay when Burnley substitute Matt Lowton floated in a cross from the right and Gudmundsson met it on the half-volley to fire home.

The hard-fought draw gave the hosts one of the more memorable results of a season that has defied expectations.

Man City boss Guardiola, expressed disappointment after the match, saying that even though his side’s performance was outstanding, they missed a lot of chances at goal.

“Of course we are frustrated in terms of the result but the performance is outstanding against a Burnley side who are the most British of teams in terms of long balls and the way they play.

“But football is about goals. We need to score the second, third and fourth when we have the chance.

“When you arrive in the last 15 minutes at Burnley 1-0, this is what can happen. I’m sad for the players because we played so well.

“What they have done this season, Burnley, is amazing. We controlled the game, but when we arrived in the last minutes at 1-0, there was danger,’’ he said.

Burnley manager Dyche in his post-match reaction, hailed his team for putting up a good performance against the premier league leaders, adding that they had to dig in to get a result.

“I was really pleased. City is a top class side. We’ve been beaten 3-0 and 4-1 by them in our two previous games. We have to change something.

“We didn’t really play with the quality needed in the first half.

“In the second half, City started really well and we had to dig in and did the ugly stuff. Then the confidence started to build.

“We started putting quality into their box, and in the end it was a fantastic ball and a fantastic goal.

“We don’t dominate too many games with the ball so we’ve got to keep our shape. You can’t all be glory. Not when you’re us.

“You have to do the ugly stuff. But we still have some fine quality and we show that with goal.

“We are not saying we’re the real deal but we’re working hard to be better than last season and we’re doing that.” (NAN)

Manchester Derby: We’re Better, Guardiola Declares

RESULT: MAN UTD 1-2 MAN CITY

Following Manchester City’s  2-1 win on Sunday at Old Trafford, Pep Guardiola told on BBC Radio 5 live that the Blues won the Jose Mourinho’s side because “they were better.’

“We won in Old Trafford again, that is why I am the most pleased and of course for the three points. We played good, with a lot of courage. I’m so satisfied.

“We won because we were better. We are still in December, if we have 11 points when we play the second derby in April then maybe I will tell you that we have the title.”

Manchester City hyave now moved 11 points clear of Manchester United after the commanding performance at Old Trafford on Sunday. It was their record 14th consecutive victory in the League.

    PREMIER LEAGUE TABLE

While their two goals did owe something to good fortune, nobody can argue they were undeserving following a superb performance at Old Trafford.

They led when David Silva capitalised on a Romelu Lukaku mistake at the back to turn the ball home from close range late in the first-half, only for Marcus Rashford to pounce on City defensive errors to equalise in stoppage time.

But Nicolas Otamendi scored City’s winner nine minutes after the break after another inadequate clearance by Lukaku in his own box. It was a well-taken close range finish and ensured a huge victory for Pep Guardiola’s team.

‘I feel sorry for Michael Oliver’

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to BBC Sport after the loss to Man City at old Trafford. In his reaction the vicibly unhappy Mourinho said, “My first reaction is I feel sorry for referee Michael Oliver because he had a very good match but unfortunately he made an important mistake.

“The result was made with a big penalty not given [on Ander Herrera]. That would have been 2-2 with 20 minutes to go

“Michael was unlucky because it was a clear penalty.”

Asked whether the title race is over, Mourinho adds: “Probably, yes.

“Manchester City are a very good team and they are protected by the luck, and the gods of football are behind them.”

He added that, “Like last season, we had a penalty with City – Bravo on Rooney. This season is the same. But Michael was unlucky as it was a clear penalty.

“Two bad goals. Not what you expect to concede. City have good qualities. They have a huge percentage of ball but their creation we kept control of.

“We did enough to win the game? It depends on your perspective. They had more of the ball and apparently more control because they kept the ball more than us. But I think the players fought enough. Without any analysing the match is made of incidents and the penalty was a big incident.”

  • Man City 2-1 West Ham – Silva, Otamendi Earn City’s Win

Man City 2-1 West Ham – Silva, Otamendi Earn City’s Win

Manchester City beat West Ham2-1 in the Premier League to continue their winning run but were made to work hard for the points.

The Pep Guardiola’s side came from behind to beat West Ham in the Sunday’s fixture at Etihad Stadium.

The Blues were gargantuan favourites against David Moyes’s side but struggled to break down another backs-to-the-wall effort from their opponents and were stunned when Angelo Ogbonna headed in the opening goal just before half time.

Pep Guardiola went gung-ho after the break, bringing Gabriel Jesus on for left back Danilo and predicting West Ham would retreat further into their own third to protect their lead.

Nicolas Otamendi turned in the equaliser around the hour mark after good work from Jesus, and the Hammers backline was finally pierced again in the final ten minutes as David Silva met Kevin De Bruyne’s excellent ball with an exquisite volley into the far corner.

The win means City maintain their winning run and retain their eight-point lead going into the derby.

Man City Win 1-0 at Stamford Bridge (De Bruyne 67)

he final score was 1-0 at Stamford Bridge . De Bruyne scored the winning goal Manchester City.

Man City maintained their lead with goal from Kevin de Bruyne at the 67th minute still the end of the 90 minute..

The Mid-fielder goal was a delight to the visiting side at Stamford bridge.

De Bruyne, perhaps frustrated at watching his team-mates blow chances with over-elaboration, goes simple … albeit in some style.

He powers down the middle of the park, drifting right to left slightly, then smacks a stunning riser into the top right! Belt! Courtois had no chance whatsoever! What a player De Bruyne is, and that really is some strike!

There was no goal for the first 45 minutes.

That was what to expect when two tactical geniuses are in the dugouts.

The first half was however interesting … but not particularly exciting. City had the upper hand, by 309 to 130 passes, give or take.

And Courtois has been the more active keeper.

Man City tried to take the game to Chelsea but the home side couldn’t lose-up their guard throughout the first 45 minutes

    Stoke vs Chelsea 0-4

  • Ihenacho eyes goal against Arsenal

    Ihenacho eyes goal against Arsenal

It will be missed feelings should Super Eagles and Man City forward Kelechi Ihenacho score in English Premier League  clash against Arsenal on Sunday at the Ethihad Stadium.

Ihenacho, who is sure to start in the encounter as Sergio Aguero continues to serve his four game ban, was once a must sign for the Gunners who were however stopped in 2014 from realizing the dream.

Kelechi’s agent Kennedy Ezenwere recently revealed that he blocked the move to Emirates foreseeing that the Nigerian international would have more playing time at the Ethihad than at the Emirates.

“Arsenal were interested in Kelechi but I blocked the move. I picked Manchester City ahead of Arsenal not because of money. I know if he goes to Man City he has a better chance of playing there than Arsenal and I have been proved right,” he enthused.

Despite the failed project the Gunners still reportedly have soft spot for him and would want to wish away his goal against them.

Meanwhile Man City have signed Tecno Mobile as its official tablet and handset partner. Speaking at the launch City Group Chief Commercial Officer Tom Glick said “We are delighted to welcome Tecno Mobile to Manchester City’s growing repertoire of global partners.”

Man City go into Sunday’s tie fresh from a 2-0 victory over Watford and 4-2 away loss to Leicester City.
