  • When a man bites a dog…

HAPPY weekend, dear reader. I should have done this last week, but like they say, it is better late than never. Permit me to express how elated I am to introduce this column. Feminique will be an interactive platform on which we can talk about everything that borders on relationship.

Of course, some of your reactions or contributions could subsequently be published, so we are assured of being on the same page. I encourage us all to seat back and fasten our seatbelts as we go on this ride.

There’s a song that says “the heart is not so smart; it goes to where it should not.”

Mr and Mrs Benson were a regular couple who were happily married until ‘life’ happened to their marriage. After their union, they lived under the same roof for 15 years without sex. To the outside world, they appeared happy, but it was nothing but a façade.

A reverend father at some point decided to wade in after efforts by family and friends had yielded no result. Mr Benson, after 15 years, decided to open up to the priest.

His narration: “I met and married my wife at the age of 18. I did not believe in love until I met my wife. I thought it was same for her because, just like me, she could not wait to get married to me despite our 14 years age difference.

“I gave her the wedding of a lifetime. She was my world. She was my everything. Not at all feeling insecure about her age, I ensured she got admitted into a university; a decision I still regret till date.

As soon as my wife gained admission, she lost it, literally speaking. Stories of her escapades with fellow students were getting to me almost on a weekly basis. As the older and wiser partner, I chose to forgive and overlook.

After her graduation, I thought it would be better between us, especially when she became pregnant with our first and only child. But she continued with her promiscuous lifestyle one year after we had Ada. She kept denying these allegations, but deep down, I knew she was cheating on me… I just knew it.

Fast forward to 15 years earlier. A married family friend of ours, had accommodation challenge and as a couple, we offered to help. It is another decision I will regret till my dying days. My friend came to me one fateful morning. This was two years after he had stayed with me for free.

He said he had a confession to make; that as a fellow Catholic, he had gone to confess to a Priest about his sins and, as his penance (restitution if you like), the Priest had told him that the only way he could be forgiven was to confess his sins to me. At this point, I was looking for the nearest chair to sit on as my friend sounded very serious.

He confessed to me that in the past two years that he and his wife had been staying in my house, he had been sleeping with my wife! At this point, I was just speechless. I was devoid of emotions.

Naturally, my friend did not wait for my response. He had earlier packed his belongings and left my house together with his wife, leaving me with a broken heart. That was the day I vowed never to touch or sleep with my wife. She is heartless.

On her part, she has cried and begged and sworn never to hurt me again. But for me, this was one hurt too many. As a Catholic, I will not divorce her unless she initiates it.

After they both attended a couples retreat, counselling sessions et al, they have both decided to give their marriage a second chance!

My thoughts …in this part of the world, women are designed to forgive their men, countless times. As a matter of fact when a man cheats on his woman, its no news. Just like “when a dog bites a man it’s no news, but when a man bites a dog.. it becomes a story. I think this couple will be fine…what do you think?

  • Approach BoI for funds, expert tells MAN

AFORMER Director, Bank of Industry (BoI), Mr. Femi Ogunje, has advised manufacturers to avail themselves of the bank’s loans to address their funding challenges.

Ogunje gave the advice at the public session organised by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Apapa Branch, in Lagos.

The meeting was tagged “Financing options for more competitive manufacturing sector: Funding opportunities in BoI.”

Ogunje, who is the Managing Director Rofenic Limited, said record keeping, collaterisation, management skills and favourable credit history should be presented by manufacturers to ease access to loan.

He said: “Access to loan has been identified as one of the major challenges faced by the manufacturing sector. To address the issue, successive governments had established intervention institutions called Development Financial Institutions (DFI).

“However, comments reaching us revealed that many were discouraged from approaching the bank for financial assistance due to perceived (difficult) terms and conditions in accessing the loans.”

He told manufacturers that BoI was primarily set up for them as they are represented on the board of the bank, adding that the lender had accredited Business Development Service Providers to assist in packaging the documents to be presented for loan application. He therefore advised manufacturers to take advantage of the initiative.

  • MAN: reforms not helping manufacturing

THE Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) yesterday said government reforms in manufacturing  are not deep enough to accelerate growth in the sector.

The Chairman of Apapa Branch of MAN, Olukunle Obadina, who spoke at the 47th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the branch, noted that despite the numerous reforms, which aimed at repositioning economy, the manufacturing sector continued to dwindle.

He noted that the lingering challenges facing the sector had not abated, stressing that long-term loans were needed.

Obadina said these challenges could be attributed to many factors, ranging from funding, especially long-term high interest rate, foreign exchange availability, poor support infrastructure, multiple taxes, levies by various tiers and arms of government, policy summersault/inconsistency, absence of core industries that would produce raw materials, insecurity, absence of inadequate support to encourage the growth of small and medium scale industries.

“Despite the these constraints, the national output grew in real terms by 0.72 percent in the Q2 of 2017 as against 2.06 percent, thereby indicating 2.78 percent point increase over the period under review,” he said.

Similarly, MAN nationaol President, Frank-Jacobs Udemba, noted that manufacturing sector was particularly hit with the hard times, with many firms operating minimally while some were forced to shut.

Udemba said: “The lack-luster performance of the national economy has made it imperative for us to rethink the country’s development strategy so that we would avoid the recent setback that befell the country. To this end, the Federal and state governments should work in synergy, carrying along relevant stakeholders in fashioning appropriate strategies to improve and stablise the economy.”

Udemba urged the government to make efforts that would encourage more investment in manufacturing by providing appropriate incentives and infrastructure that would encourage investors as well as taking a closer look at the regulatory functions of the organs of government that discourage investors.

  • Girl, 6, relives how man, 39, raped her

Six-year-old girl in Ikorodu has told The Nation how she was raped by a 39-year-old neighbour, Benjamin Akande on July 27.

The incident happened at their Ikorodu, Lagos residence where both Akande and the girl’s parent live as tenants.

The girl said Akande sent her groundnut and raped her in his room after delivering the goods.

She said: “He asked me to buy him groundnut and when I got back, I told him I want to ease myself, but he didn’t allow me to; he said I should come relax. I heard people calling my name and I told him I wanted to go, but he did not let me go. He laid me on the ground, removed my trouser; he also removed his own trouser and laid on me. When I heard people still calling my name, I told him I wanted to go but he didn’t allow me and he covered my mouth with cloth.

“He later took me to a school compound in our area and warned me never to tell anyone what happened, else he will beat me. He poured sand on my head and told me to tell those calling me that I was playing in the school compound.”

The Nation gathered that Akande was arrested by officers from Owutu Police Division.

The girl’s mother, Kudirat Olaniyi, a food vendor said she normally keeps her children with the landlord’s wife when she is going out and pick them from there when she returns.

“On that Friday, I set out for work around 12:30pm. Her father, a commercial bus driver, had left around 4am. We returned around 4pm that day. I was told that they were looking for my daughter at a point, but that she had been found, though she refused to tell anyone where she was.

“Around 7pm, while I was preparing their food, I asked my daughter where she went to but she said nothing.  When I slapped her, she said it was Brother Benjamin that sent her to buy groundnut and asked her to come into his room. She said he undressed her and also himself. She said he laid her on the ground and laid on her. I asked her what she did when she heard people calling out her name, she said she told him she wanted to go and meet them but he covered her mouth with cloth. She told me that when people stopped calling her name, he took her to a school at the back of our house, put sand on her head and told her if people ask where she was, she should tell them she was playing in the school.”

Mrs Olaniyi said when Akande was been arrested, he threatened her that he would retaliate.

The landlord’s wife, who simply identified herself as Alhaja Akoninikewu, said: “The girl and her brother were playing with my children in our shop because I was attending to visitors in my house. When it was time to go to the mosque, we noticed that this girl was nowhere to be found, we searched for her, shouting her name everywhere but all was to no avail. I told the children to go to the mosque and we later found her in a school compound with sand on her head. We asked where she had been and what she was doing but she said nothing, until her mother spoke with her later in the day.”

The Deputy Coordinator of Child Protection Network (CPN), Alhaji Lateef Akinborode, said his organisation took the matter up immediately the information got to them.

“Immediately the father of the girl informed us about the case, we informed the Lagos State Police Command and the case is now in court,” he said.
