  • Man to sweep court for stealing N15,000 make-up

An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos yesterday sentenced a make-up artist, Tunde Ebikeme, to community service for stealing beauty products valued at N15,000 from a supermarket.

Magistrate M. O. Ope-Agbe convicted Ebikeme, 24, following his plea of guilty to a one-count charge of stealing.

She ordered him to sweep the court’s premises from the fourth floor to the ground floor.

The magistrate said the convict got only community service as punishment because he had a good skill which he needed to sharpen.

Mrs Ope-Agbe warned Ebikeme against committing a crime because he could be sent to prison the next time.

She said: “Prison will not be better for you. I want you to get better with your make-up job. But if you go back to crime, you will be sent to prison.”

The magistrate delivered judgment after prosecuting Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji stated the facts of the matter.

Osuji said Ebikeme committed the offence on June 26 at Prince Ebeano Supermarket, Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase I, Lagos.

According to him, the convict entered the supermarket, bought and paid for some items, but concealed other items in his pockets and attempted to leave without paying.

  • MAN warns against hasty signing of AFCFTA

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has urged the Federal Government not to endorse the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AFCFTA).

The group argued that the Nigerian Office for Trade Negotiations (NOTN) under the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Industry, only focuses on its potential benefits and what Nigeria is expected to benefit from its implementation, but failed to look at the area that will put the nation at a disadvantage.

MAN’s President, Dr Frank Jacobs said a press briefing that the major stakeholders raised certain issues during the sensitisation meetings held in the six geo-political zones chosen by NOTN, saying concerns expressed by manufacturers, wre still unattended to.

He said: “We hasten to observe that the NOTN version of the outcomes of the stakeholders’ engagements and sensitisation as reported in the news media, does not adequately reflect the overall proceedings and factual expressions at those meetings. We are worried that this could be misleading and more importantly, may not put Nigeria in good stead and could inexorably put the nation in a disadvantaged position if, or when the implementation of the AfCFTA commences.

“We are now even more worried that, in spite of the widespread concerns that necessitated Mr. President’s reservation of his signature at the Summit in Kigali, the subsequent activities of the NOTN was not tailored towards addressing those concerns. Rather than squarely addressing those critical issues, all efforts were geared towards extolling the laudable objectives of the AfCFTA, its potential benefits and what Nigeria is expected to benefit from its implementation.

“This is rather simplistic and cannot be the way to go. Not for Nigeria that has a lot and the most to lose, should we sign-on to an agreement that is still shrouded in uncertainty, not informed by any study and not based on any negotiated position at the domestic level. In specific terms, we have observed with great apprehension that the issues that the major stakeholders raised at the beginning, including those expressed by manufacturers, still remain unattended to.”

For instance,  Jacob said the agreement to the adoption of the 90:10 per cent Market Access ratios to be achieved in five years, lacked empirical basis and evidence of due consultation and accommodation of concerned and affected stakeholders and operators.

Other issues raise are that Nigeria agreed to such a short period for the implementation of the Market Access without negotiating the Rules of Origin; that right from the period preceding the Kigali Summit and up until now, the content of the Nigerian offer has remained unknown to manufacturers who are the number one stakeholders to be positively and or negatively impacted by the proposition; and that key economic ministry departments and established structures remained largely sidelined during the process.

While MAN expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for his decision to cancel his trip to Kigali, Rwanda to sign AFCFTA, it recommended that as a matter of urgency, government must convene a special meeting of the relevant stakeholders including experts on trade policy.

  • Man, 73, arrested for raping girl, 13

A 73-year-old native doctor, Joseph Umuluku, has been arrested by the Warri ‘B’ Division of Delta State Police Command for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl.

It was gathered that the suspect, a resident of Giwa-Amu Street at Okumagba Layout in Warri, lured the victim into a bathroom where he had carnal knowledge of her and inflicted serious injuries on her.

A police source at the ‘B’ Division Police Station, who spoke in confidence, said Umuluku is a neighbour to the parents of the victim.

According to him, the suspect has made confessional statement and the matter will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

“The matter was reported at our station on Monday and the girl sustained serious injuries as a result of the rape.

“However, the police are trying to seek medication for the girl, while the suspect is making confessional statement. He will be charged to court once investigation is concluded.”

The President of Nigerian Child Welfare Fund, Comrade Joshua Omorere, who has been calling for the case to be charged to court, said: “It is a weighty offence that cannot be settled out of court. They live in the same compound and the man must have been doing it.”

  • Man ‘impersonates’ Senator Ubah

    •Job seekers fleeced on Facebook

Detectives attached to Area ‘D’ Command in Mushin, Lagos State, have arrested a man, Joel Asabor, for allegedly impersonating Senator Andy Ubah.

Asabor, it was gathered, posed on Facebook as the senator representing Anambra South and fleeced job seekers who applied to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The suspect was reportedly trailed to Oghara in Delta State on Monday, where he was apprehended.

Asabor was said to have opened a Facebook account with Ubah’s picture, where he had private chats with job hunters and asked them to pay a certain amount of money to get their dream jobs.

His trailing, it was gathered, followed a petition by Charles Asugha on behalf of a victim, Chinelo Nnedimma, who lost N300,000 to the suspected fraudster.

It was learnt that having paid N300,000 to the suspect’s bank account and the job was not forthcoming, the victim was directed to contact a supposed lawmaker, identified simply as Nkiruka, for further discussions.

A source said the victim was swindled last December, adding that the police only got involved due to the petition.

He said: “The victim paid N300,000 through the bank account of Asabor Joel (3069996606). She was promised employment in NNPC. But after collecting the money, he (Asabor) started playing pranks with the victim. He gave the victim the mobile number of a certain lawmaker, Nkiruka, which was another ploy to swindle the victim the more.”

  • Man fondles woman’s breasts in hubby’s presence

A man, Kabiru Saka, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly touching a married woman’s breasts.

Saka, 25, who lives at Alagbado in Lagos State is facing a three-count charge of assault, indecent act and stealing before Magistrate A.K Dosunmi.

Prosecuting Sergeant Dada Wasiu said the defendant committed the offence on Monday at Moshalasi Alagbado, Lagos.

He said Saka unlawfully and indecently assaulted Mrs Faith Ijiogbe by “repeatedly” touching her breasts.

Wasiu said that day, the accused had begged the complainant to give him a carton of canned drinks which accidentally fell off a motorcycle when she was conveying them to her shop.

He said Saka told Mrs Ijiogbe that he wanted to use the canned drinks bike as sacrifice to the gods.

Mrs Ijiogbe, he said, declined his request; put the drinks back inside the carton and gave the carton to her husband.

The accused, the prosecutor said, then started touching Mrs Ijiogbe’s breasts and her husband asked him to stop.

The accused, he said, refused and hit Mr Ijiogbe with a weapon, causing him grievous harm.

According to the prosecutor, the complainant’s phone valued at N35, 000 was stolen in the process.

    Saka pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Dosunmi granted him N100, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She adjourned till July 23.

  • Man jumps into Lagos lagoon

A yet to be identified man yesterday jumped into the Lagos lagoon in an apparent suicide move.

The incident occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge around 6pm.

It was gathered that the man, who was in a vehicle heading to Lagos Island, alighted, crossed to the other side of the bridge and dived into the water.

Motorists, who took to social media to share the news, stated that before people could get to him, the man jumped into the water.

It was gathered that the vehicle he was in zoomed off as soon as he alighted, raising suspicions that it could have been a taxi or car belonging to fraudsters, who used diabolical means to control their victims.

As of press time, officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were on the bridge in search of the man.

LASEMA’s General Manager, Adesina Tiamiyu said they got report of the incident on social media and moved to the scene for search and rescue.

He said: “I cannot tell you anything at the moment. We do not know for sure if someone jumped into the lagoon but we have to search in case it happened.

“So far, we have not seen anyone. We have seen contradictory accounts of the incident on social media too but the operation would continue.”

  • Man commits suicide at Mecca’s Grand Mosque

A yet-to-be-identified man yesterday committed suicide by throwing himself off the roof of the Grand Mosque in Islam’s holiest city of Mecca.

The state news agency, SPA, quoted the police as saying:”A foreigner threw himself from the roof of the Grand Mosque in Mecca” to the courtyard below, “resulting in his instant death.”

The body was transported to hospital, with an investigation underway “to determine the victim’s identity, what led to the act and how he was able to commit it despite the existence of a metal fence,” SPA said.

Last year, a Saudi man tried to set himself on fire in front of the Kaaba but was stopped by security forces.

Every year, millions of Muslim pilgrims from across the world travel to Mecca and Medina, Islam’s second holiest site, also in western Saudi Arabia.

  • Man stabs mum to death in Mushin

A 37-year-old man, Nurudeen Bakare, went wild on Wednesday, stabbing his 65-year-old mother, Bosede, to death.

He was said to have killed her after rented argument at their Oremeji, Ilasamaja, Mushin, Lagos home.

Bakare was said to have been away from home for 12 years before his recent return to the area.

He was said to have accused his mother, popularly called Iya Fali, of sitting on his father’s property, warning that he felt like killing someone.

Iya Fali allegedly responded that he would end up in jail if he did.

Shunning his mother’s warning, he allegedly picked up a knife and started stabbing her.

As if possessed, he started shouting: “I have killed her! I have killed her!!, I have killed her!!!,” witness said.

When people rushed to the scene, they saw Mrs Bakare in her pool of blood.

Some youths immediately grabbed Bakare and started beating him.

He reportedly begged them not to kill him, but to call the police.

An eyewitness, who simply identified himself as Ola, described the scene as horrible.

He said he had never seen such a thing in his life.

“I heard that this kind of thing happened or watched something close to this in movies. This is my first time of seeing something like this. It is horrible. I can’t stand watching Iya Fali in her pool of blood on the ground. What could have gone wrong with her son,” he said.

Another eyewitness, Iya Seun, said she heard them arguing, not knowing that it will lead to the woman’s death.

She said: “Both of them were arguing inside the woman’s shop. We thought it was their usual tirade until we saw the man with blood stain on his hand and cloth, saying he has killed her. We quickly rushed to the woman’s shop and saw her gasping for breath. She was stabbed in the stomach, chest and her throat was slit. I don’t believe a normal human being could do that.”

A man, who does not want his name in print, said “Bakare appeared mentally unfit.”

According to him, some of the things he said after the incident were meaningless.

Lagos State Police Command’s spokesman, Chike Oti, a Superintendent (SP), said Bakare had been arrested and taken to Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) at Panti, Yaba.

He said: “About 7:10pm, one Sunday Tifase of Odofin Street, Itire, Lagos reported that his younger brother, Nurudeen Bakare, 37 stabbed his mother, Bosede Bakare, 65, with a knife at her stomach and neck without any reason.

“The victim was taken to Mainland General Hospital where she was confirmed dead by a doctor. The suspect was arrested at the scene of the crime.

“The remains of the deceased have been deposited at same Mainland General Hospital Mortuary for autopsy. The case has been transferred to SCIID, Yaba for discreet investigation.”

  • Man to spend 13 months in Kirikiri for burglary

A 23-year-old man, Tolani Faseyi, has been sentenced to 13 months imprisonment without a fine option for burglary.

Chief Magistrate A.A. Adetunji handed down the verdict after Faseyi pleaded guilty of the offence.

He pleaded guilty to the charges.

Prosecuting Inspector Matthew Akhaluode said the convict broke into a house with intent to steal and damage a window valued at N3,000.

The convict, he said, committed the offence on May 23 at 7, Lawal Street, Igesun in Ayobo Ipaja, Lagos.

The convict, who was first arraigned in court on June 4, conspired with another person now at large to unlawfully gain entry into the room of the complainant, Mrs Elizabeth Lawal, with intent to steal.

Akhaluode said in the process of entering the room, the complainant’s window valued at N3, 000 was damaged.

He said the convict held the complainant on the neck during the incident.

The victim, he said, raised an alarm which attracted neighbours who assisted in apprehending the burglar. The accomplice, he said, escaped through the window.
