  • Man, 43, allegedly defiles 11-year-old thrice

A 43-year-old man, Ifeanyi Adieme has been arrested for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old (name withheld) It was learnt that the girl’s parents handed her over to Adieme to look after his three children.

It was learnt that the girl who attends Iba Estate Primary School, Ojo, Lagos, on Ma 20, 2018, opened up to one of the coordinators of her church’s children section on how she had been subjected to sexual abuse and defilement by Adieme.

The pastor of the church was said to have reported the matter to Iba Police Station, following a medical confirmation of Adeime’s sexual abuse of the girl, and he was arrested.

The pastor who refused to give out his name said he was angry when he heard that a little girl was raped by his uncle and he was provoked to call for Adieme’s arrest.

According to the Pastor, Adieme was not a member of the church but  he allowed his children to attend the church every Sunday. “We only know the children as our members; they have been coming for a long time. But, we don’t know their father, in fact, today is my first time of seeing him”.

Adieme, who runs a frozen food retail shop and was detained at the station for allegedly raping the girl, initially denied touching her saying: “I didn’t touch her. I am a Christian and would not do such a thing, I hope the hospital can detect if I went into her private part? Let them found that out if I was the one.’’

Adieme who hails from Nsugbe town in Anambra State but lives at number 19 Oremeji Street, Ibatedo, Ojo Lagos narrated further that he once had a beautiful and good wife who died in January, adding that it was as a result of who would help him look after his children that made him seek for a help.

“I brought her to my house and enrolled her at Iba Estate Primary School. As time went by she couldn’t do house chores as I expected and I would caution her. Then on Friday 18th of this month, I came back home and saw a candle burning in the parlour. I asked who put the candle; she said it was my son. I said you that is older that I brought into this home to take care of my children, you are not taking care of them well, so I just beat her but not so much and they left to church. I was at home waiting for them to come back from church when police came and arrested me”.

A medical report from Igando General Hospital confirmed that the girl was actually defiled.

Around 9:30am on Monday, the pastor, a member of the church and Adieme’s elder brother were at the station. They pleaded with the DPO, Mr Gbenga  Ogunsakin not to refer Adieme to Lagos State Police Command, but grant him bail in order to look after his children. At this time, Ogunsakin called in the victim, to narrate in details how Adieme abused her.

According to the girl, it all started on a Friday night around 10pm after Adieme’s chidren had gone to bed. She said: “He called me into his room, When I entered he brought out his private part. I screamed and made to leave the room, he dragged me back and warned me not to make a noise. He asked me to kneel down and began to lick. I told him I can’t do that. He hit me on the head and said that he will beat me if I don’t do it. I started doing it; he held my head and was pushing it inside my mouth. When something started coming out, I tried to withdraw but he said I should continue to lick it”

“Another night, I wanted to go and sleep he called me back. He pulled all my cloth and asked me to lie down on the bed. Then he started doing it. He said that if I tell anybody that he will kill me. After sometime he stopped. His son had woken up at that time, he went outside and came back and started again. I was crying all through, he beat me and said I should stop crying.”

She added that on the first day it happened that her mother called Adieme. She said that Adieme gave her the phone to speak to her mother but that as soon as she began to tell her mother what happened, Adieme quickly collected the phone and turned it off.

When the DPO could no longer tolerate what he was hearing from the victim, he ordered that Adieme be brought out from the cell. He wanted to know Adieme’s motive, why he raped the girl three times and why he made her  lick his sperm.

Adieme fell on his knees and begged for mercy; he said it was the devil that pushed him and more likely to be the curse that was placed on him by his wife’s relative.

The case has since been transferred to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command.

Adejoke Cole, a Superintendent of Police (SP) of Lagos State Police Command in charge of Gender Unit expressed worrisome over the increase rate of child rape in the state.  After documentation and hand over of the case, the victim, was taken to Mirabel Centre, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja for medical tests and treatment.

However, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO) Mr Chike Oti, who confirmed the incident, added that the suspect was in custody and will soon face the law.

  • MAN seeks govt’s intervention in N29b tariff dispute with DisCos, NERC

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has appealed to the Federal Government to resolve its N29 billion electricity tariff dispute with the Electricity Distribution Companies (Discos) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Its Director-General, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, made the appeal yesterday in an interview  in Lagos.

Ajayi-Kadir spoke while assessing the three years performance of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, its impact on the manufacturing sector and setting agenda for the coming year.

He urged the Federal Government to assist in settling the dispute out of court by picking part of the N29 billion  debt.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), he said the dispute arose because the DisCos and NERC (allegedly) failed to abide by the new Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO 2015) that was subsisting at that time.

“By the last count, I was told that cumulatively manufacturers owe the DisCos N29 billion and that is absolutely a crazy figure.

“We want the government to intervene and find an amicable solution to the issue so that the 2,000 megawatts that manufacturers ought to benefit from would be released and not hindered by this court process.

“The government can also pick up part of the bill as a matter of urgency to bail out the sector,” Ajayi-Kadir said.

It would be recalled that the dispute arose when MAN directed its members nationwide to ignore the new MYTO 2015.

The association  later went to court to obtain an injunction restraining NERC and DisCos from implementing the new tariff regime.

MAN said the tariff was too expensive for manufacturers and would lead to closure of many businesses.

Besides, the Director-General said the Eligible Customer Policy evolved by the government might not have the desired impact on the manufacturing sector due to the unresolved N29 billion debt issue.

He said the policy would not work because MAN was told that for it to access the eligible customer scheme, it must have a no debt bill with the DisCos.

The policy was targeted at enabling consumers purchase power directly from the GenCos, instead of depending wholly on the DisCos.

Ajayi-Kadir said although these measures were meant to assist the manufacturing sector, the government should ensure factors militating against their workability, such as the debt issue, were tackled.

According to him, the current administration has  done a lot, but still expects we expect the government to work more on allowing these initiatives to work, particularly in the areas of power.

“It is a dilemma for us in the manufacturing sector because the cost of power is high and we have inadequate supply.

“I believe that government should work more on generation, particularly distribution. The DisCos are challenged and they have enumerated quite a lot of challenges that are militating against their effective performance.

“The government needs to remove the impediments with the DisCos by intervening in the process of out of court settlement and also help them with their distribution challenges,” Ajayi-Kadir said.

  • Man hangs self in Somolu

The decomposing body of a 46-year-old man, Kola Shotunde, was at the weekend, found dangling from the ceiling in his apartment.

The incident occurred at Ayepe Avenue by Okesuna Bus Stop, Somolu, Lagos Mainland.

The deceased, a lone occupant of his apartment, was said to have been depressed since the death of his mother. He had no wife or child.

It was gathered that Shotunde’s neighbours had perceived disturbing odour from his apartment and could not reach him to know what the problem was.

They were said to have knocked on his door several times on Friday night without response, which raised suspicion.

According to a source, the neighbours contacted the police and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to report their fear that he might have died inside the house.

“LASEMA and policemen came to the scene and discovered the door was locked from inside. So, his brother was invited before the door was forced open. As soon as it was opened, Shotunde’s body was seen hanging on the ceiling fan.

“It was already smelling, which means he might have died some days back. It was around 9pm on Friday that the door was opened.

“The last time anyone saw him was Monday or Tuesday. When the odour was coming from his apartment, people were looking for him to find out what was wrong. That was when people started suspecting he might have died.

“Before his corpse was evacuated, his family members performed some cleansing.”

Police spokesman Chike Oti, a Superintendent (SP), confirmed the incident, adding that the deceased’s brother told the police that he had been sick.

  • MAN wants FG to reduce recurrent expenditure

The Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria (MAN) is seeking a cut down in Federal Government’s recurrent expenditure to check Nigeria’s rising debt profile.

The president of the association, Dr. Frank Jacobs, said yesterday in a statement in Lagos that the savings could be channelled into sectors with multiplying revenue generation capacity like agriculture, production and manufacturing.

Jacobs said the call became necessary because of the associated service charges and the future economic burden such debt would exert on the nation.

The IMF on May 21 expressed concern over Nigeria’s capacity to repay its debt and urged the Federal Government to mobilize means of generating revenue domestically.

IMF said the number of low-income economies in debt distress had increased and there was a need for Nigeria to curtail the debt.

The Fund said that the number of low-income economies that were in debt distress had risen from eight in 2014 to 15 in 2016.

“Nigeria’s debt stock figure, which is 20 to 23 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product(GDP), is still quite low by any standard, but the issue is the capacity to repay the debts. So interest payment to revenue is an issue,” IMF said
