Mbah reshuffles cabinet, swears in head of service, six commissioners

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, on Tuesday, rejigged his cabinet, swearing in a new Head of Service, six new commissioners, and reassigning three others.

Mbah also assigned portfolios to the new appointees following the administration of oath of office on them by a representative of the Ministry of Justice, Chizoba Ogbodo, at the State Executive Council Chamber, Government House, Enugu.

The newly sworn-in appointees are: Dr. Godwin Anigbo, Head of Service; Engr. Benjamin Osita Okoh, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure; Prof. Benedett Ekwutosi Okoli, Commissioner for Human Development and Poverty Eradication; Enyinna Franklin Ogbonna, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources; and Dr. Samuel Ogbu-Nwobodo, Commissioner for Trade, Investment, and Industry.

Others are Prof. George Ugwu, Commissioner for Health and Engr. Ben Collins Ndu Jr., who was designated as the Commissioner for Water Resources.

Speaking on the occasion, Mbah charged the appointees to hit the ground running, stressing that there would be no honeymoon period for them.

He said the administration had, in two years, steered high expectations among the people of the state as well as Nigerians in general and could not lower its performance across sectors.

“You would soon notice that here in Enugu, we have steered such a high expectation among our people. And every day it feels as though we are presenting a scorecard.

“Therefore, you have to hit the ground running, as there will be no honeymoon period for you, unfortunately. There are humongous goals that we have outlined. And your various Ministries will play critical roles in accomplishing those goals.

“We set targets, we set goals, and we have key performance indicators. We have measurable indicators; hence, we have to measure and we have to constantly analyse where you are in respect to the set goals and what your results are. Those key performance indicators are key to us, and we will measure you based on these outcomes and results,” the governor stated.

He further charged the appointees to work as a team, in line with the established cultures of the administration.

“We also recognise teamwork champions. We do not encourage working in silos. You have to work as a team. We believe that by working as a team, we are able to accomplish our collective goals. You should not see your colleagues as rivals. They should complement your efforts instead.

“Our modest accomplishment in the state so far is not done by a single champion. We like to recognise our successes as team efforts,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of other appointees, Dr. Ogbu-Nwobodo thanked the governor for finding them worthy out of the many other highly qualified Enugu citizens and beyond, assuring that they would not let him down.

“Since you chose to entrust us with this sacred duty, as you make history daily. We will keep faith with our Oath of Office. We will be loyal and dedicated in the discharge of our duties. We will strive to contribute to the nationally acknowledged success that your government has become,” he said.

The swearing-in ceremony was witnessed by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai; Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Barr. Victor Udeh, several commissioners and senior appointees of government, as well as the spouses of the appointees.

We’ve deployed technology to eliminate corruption – Gov. Mbah

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has announced the complete elimination of manual revenue handling in the state, following the successful deployment of digital platforms aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and traceability of public funds.

Governor Mbah made the disclosure while receiving the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Adamu Aliyu, SAN, at the Government House in Enugu.

He reaffirmed his administration’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption, noting that the state’s governance model is driven by institutional reforms and technology-based systems designed to ensure efficiency and integrity in public finance management.

“In Enugu, we operate a zero-tolerance policy for corruption. We have established systems that transcend individuals,” Mbah stated. “No government revenue is collected manually. Whether it is ₦100 or ₦200,000, every payment is made through a secure electronic platform.”

He recalled that his very first executive action upon assumption of office was the signing of Executive Order 001, which established the Citizens’ Charter — a framework mandating regular disclosures of government finances and operations.

“Two hours after my oath of office, I signed Executive Order 001, which is one of the Citizens’ Charters. That document binds me to render periodic accounts to the people of Enugu, reporting every naira received and how it is spent. This is the bedrock of our governance model,” the governor said.

He also highlighted the government’s engagement with the public through regular town hall meetings and stakeholder consultations, noting that transparency fosters trust and enhances citizen participation in governance.

Linking anti-corruption efforts with the state’s broader economic vision, Governor Mbah said: “Our target is to grow Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion within eight years. This ambition depends heavily on private investments. But investors don’t follow promises; they follow systems — the rule of law, ease of doing business, and transparency. That is what we are deliberately building in Enugu.”

Governor Mbah further welcomed the regional anti-corruption roundtable being hosted in Enugu between ICPC and Attorneys General from the South East, describing it as a timely dialogue that resonates with his administration’s drive and governance philosophy.

In his remarks, ICPC Chairman, Dr. Adamu Aliyu, SAN, called for deeper collaboration between the Commission and the Enugu State Government to jointly tackle corruption at the sub-national level.

He lauded Governor Mbah’s anti-corruption reforms and affirmed that ICPC remains committed to a three-pronged mandate — enforcement, prevention, and public enlightenment.

“We are not here in competition. We believe in partnership,” Dr. Aliyu said. “ICPC is here to strengthen its working relationship with the state, and support the government in institutionalizing strong anti-corruption mechanisms.”

The ICPC boss decried the debilitating effect of corruption on national development and investor confidence, noting: “Corruption does not only blight our reputation among the comity of nations, it also impedes the flow of foreign direct investment, and undermines public trust.”

He emphasized the role of Attorneys General and Legal Advisers as critical stakeholders in the anti-corruption framework, especially at the state level.

“There is no way we can achieve our goals, especially at the sub-national level without working closely with the Chief Law Officers of the state. They are the closest to the governors, and they guide legal and institutional responses to corruption”.

Dr. Aliyu concluded by pledging ICPC’s readiness to support Enugu and other progressive states in building resilient anti-corruption systems, urging Governor Mbah to consider formalizing a collaborative framework with the Commission.

Mbah, in a condolence, described Buhari as one of the most patriotic and honest Nigerian leaders to have ever led the country.

The governor said: “President Buhari made his entrance into Nigerian governance space in 1984 and 2015. On both occasions, his pedigrees of truthfulness, integrity and patriotism stood out. He demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the ideals of nationhood.

“He was an embodiment of service and dedication to the fatherland. His life was a lesson to upcoming leaders that leadership is about the downtrodden and the vast number of people who needed development.

Mbah canvasses greater govt, media trust to drive democracy, development

Enugu State governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has called for greater trust and cooperation between government at all levels and the media to drive democracy and development.

He describes both as co-authors of the nation’s future.

Mbah made the call during the opening of the 2025 Biennial Convention of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu yesterday.

Speaking at the event themed “Building a Secure and Cohesive Nigeria: The Role of Dialogue, Inclusion, and the Media,” Mbah advocated for more synergy between government and the media to “build a society where progress is protected, justice is pursued, and every citizen feels seen and heard.

“We know that the relationship of trust has sometimes frayed between the press and government. Too often, our engagements are shaped by suspicion or cynicism.

“Let us change that. Let us return to a shared recognition that we are co-authors of Nigeria’s future. Democratic governance cannot succeed without the participation, and interrogation, of an informed public. And that the public relies on a press that is fair and fearless.

“Let us replace the distance with dialogue. Let us see intelligent critique as public service instead of hostility.”

He charged the media top echelon to ensure that journalism remains “a space where truth is not compromised for sensation or political ends, where rigorous reporting triumphs.”

“We need a media that is inclusive, that gives voice to the margins, that reflects the diversity of Nigeria’s people – not one that dilutes or silences dissent. A press that excludes, weakens democracy itself.

“And secondly, we believe accountability strengthens governance. That is why here in Enugu, we welcome scrutiny. We have opened our books, our processes, and our policies to public examination,” he added.

Mbah equally cited inclusion and innovation as pillars of a more just, progressive, and prosperous society, hence his administration’s adoption distribution of democracy dividends such as the 260 Smart Green Schools, 260 Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres, 260 Farm Estates, among others, on the basis of the 260 wards to ensure no part or segment of the state was left behind.

“Enugu is not just building roads, schools, and hospitals. We are restoring public trust. We are expanding the civic space and fostering robust dialogue, because we know governance without inclusion is fragile, and democracy without scrutiny is hollow.

“Since assuming office, inclusion has underpinned our policies. Enugu’s transformation is not confined to our urban centres. Every one of our 260 political wards is home to projects that reflect our core belief: no community is too remote, no citizen too marginal, to deserve dignity and opportunity.

“This ethos stems from our belief that a society is only as strong as its most vulnerable members.

“Through our policies, we are bridging the divide between urban and rural areas. No one’s location should determine access to quality education or reliable healthcare.

“So, in Enugu, innovation and inclusion are not slogans. They are both the foundation and pillars of our governance.

“We are connecting our people to new skills, new markets, and new possibilities. And we are doing so with an eye on the future.

“Our vision is bold: a $30 billion economy driven by enterprise and accountable leadership,” he stated.

The project tour aimed to gather first-hand, evidence-based information on the critical infrastructure projects undertaken by Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah administration in Enugu State.

GPAAN emphasized their role in critiquing government actions, commending successes, and offering recommendations rather than acting as an opposition party.

He noted the revitalization of critical moribund assets and a deliberate effort to build new infrastructure, expand cities, and integrate rural and urban areas.

“The new Enugu City project was specifically lauded as a visionary initiative expected to expand the metropolis and create numerous job opportunities, thereby boosting the state’s GDP.

“GPAAN also observed the enthusiasm, passion, and dedication of the people managing these establishments, noting their work ethic resembled technocrats rather than typical civil servants,” he said.

He highlighted that the group’s work involves holding the government accountable and explaining government policies to the people, while also providing feedback to the government.

Tinubu, Oborevwori, Mbah,  others  celebrate ‘Uncle Sam’ at 90

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, iconic journalist and publisher of Vanguard newspaper, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, describing him as “a doyen of journalism” and “an elder statesman whose influence transcends the newsroom.”

In a tribute to the media icon he released yesterday, President Tinubu lauded Amuka-Pemu—fondly known as Uncle Sam—for his outstanding contributions to journalism and national development over the decades.

“Today, I celebrate Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, iconic journalist and publisher of Vanguard newspaper, on his 90th birthday. Uncle Sam remains a shining example of dedication, resilience and integrity within the media industry,” President Tinubu stated.

Tracing the media veteran’s illustrious career, the President highlighted Amuka-Pemu’s early days at Daily Times, his co-founding of The Punch alongside the late Chief Olu Aboderin, and his eventual establishment of Vanguard in 1984—now one of the country’s most influential newspapers.

“Mr. Amuka-Pemu has devoted most of his life to journalism. It is to his credit and managerial acumen that Vanguard is alive today, 41 years after its founding, despite the crisis in the media industry,” the President remarked.

Describing the 90-year-old as not only a pillar of Nigerian journalism but also a respected leader in his home state of Delta and across the South-South region, President Tinubu said Amuka-Pemu’s influence extended far beyond the pages of his newspaper.

“Today, he is not just a leader of the profession; he is a doyen. His leadership, from the altar of journalism, has influenced the media landscape and extended to his role as a respected leader in Delta State and the South-South geopolitical zone, making him an elder statesman,” the President said.

The President also noted that in recognition of his enduring contributions, Amuka-Pemu was among the distinguished Nigerians recently honoured at the 2025 Democracy Day celebration, where he was conferred with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

“I urge younger journalists to emulate this highly respected publisher and leader. I wish Uncle Sam continued God’s grace and more years of impact. Our country is deeply grateful for his invaluable contributions to journalism and his enduring legacy”, the President added.

Also eulogizing the iconic publisher,  Delta State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, in Asaba, praised Amuka-Pemu, a distinguished son and leader from Delta State, for his remarkable contributions to the media industry and nation-building.

The governor lauded Amuka-Pemu’s unwavering commitment to ethical journalism, his consistent fight against corruption, and his strong advocacy for good governance and the rule of law.

His words: “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Sam Amuka-Pemu, our father, leader, and esteemed statesman on his 90th birthday, on behalf of my family, the government, and the good people of Delta State.

“Uncle Sam, as he is fondly called, has made a lasting and significant contribution to the Nigerian press, evident in the growth of Vanguard  Newspapers and his principled stance on issues of law, good governance, and anti-corruption.

“We owe you a debt of gratitude for your lifelong dedication to transforming journalism in Nigeria through sharp editorials, factual reporting, and impartial coverage.

“It gives me great joy to join your family, friends, and well-wishers in thanking Almighty God for His steadfast provision, protection, and guidance throughout your remarkable 90 years.”

Oborevwori’s counterpart,  Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State , in a congratulatory message to Amuka on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle @PNMbah yesterday, said the nonagenarian represented the best of Nigeria’s media industry.

He also hailed the veteran journalist on the conferment on him of the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON, by President Bola Tinubu, describing it as a fitting tribute to a man who had given his all to his chosen career and nation building.

“I congratulate a man who many call Sad Sam, but who in reality dedicated himself to drawing away sadness from men.  Through his years as a newspaper columnist, he navigated life issues with a biting sarcasm that confounded perpetrators of evil and brought comfort to others.

“I celebrate an icon and a perfect gentleman, who is not only a media giant, but has also nurtured giants through his mentorship.

“His establishment of Vanguard with a motto of better life for the people was for him a continuation of using the media space to enthrone good.

“For a man, who refuses to celebrate himself despite the opportunities available to him, it is only proper that those who he has positively affected have chosen the occasion of his 90th birthday to celebrate his positive passion for mankind,” he stated.

Concluding, he said, “Amuka is indeed worthy of the national honour for his immense contributions to national development and the positive influence he has had in shaping minds through the power of the press.

“I enjoin younger journalists to draw lessons of integrity, resilience, and service from his life.

“It is in this light that I wish Uncle Sam a happy birthday and also many more years of good health and continued impact.”

Former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, in a goodwill message, lauded Amuka’s monumental contributions to the journalism profession and to Nigeria’s socio-political development. He noted that both the media industry and the nation owe Amuka a debt of gratitude for his lifelong dedication and service.

Reflecting on Amuka’s illustrious career, Mark highlighted his influential column in the defunct Daily Times of Nigeria, which he said played a significant role in shaping national discourse and guiding the country’s development, even before the founding of Vanguard newspapers.

Senator Mark urged Amuka to continue to share his vast experience and wisdom in leadership and journalism with the younger generation, noting that his legacy remains a valuable resource.

He prayed for God’s continued grace upon Amuka’s life, wishing him good health, peace, and enduring wisdom in the years to come.

Uncle Sam’s constituents, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, described his  birthday as a testament to his enduring wisdom, legacy, and commitment to the journalism profession.

The Guild explained that as the founder of Vanguard Newspapers Group, has played a pivotal role in shaping the media landscape.

According to editors, “Uncle Sam’s commitment to excellence and robust journalism has inspired generations of journalists and media audiences alike.

“Under your guidance, Vanguard Newspaper has become a beacon of truth, reliability, and excellence.

“Your unwavering commitment to journalistic ethics has earned the respect and admiration of your peers, government, and readers. “

The Guild noted that Prince Amuka-Pemu’s contributions extend beyond journalism, citing his efforts to promote social justice, education, and civic engagement in Sapele and the Niger-Delta region, through his media platform.

“As we celebrate your 90th birthday, we honor not only your achievements but also your life. Your legacy will continue to inspire and motivate us and future generations,” the Guild said.

The Guild wished Prince Amuka-Pemu a happy 90th birthday, filled with joy, love, and celebration, and prayed for his continued good health, happiness, and fulfillment.

  • Mbah: Tale of enduring vision, grit and innovative disruption

Mbah: Tale of enduring vision, grit and innovative disruption

    By Nana Ogbodo

Mario Cuomo, the former Governor of the state of New York in the United States must have had the conventional Nigerian politician in mind when he intoned his now famous saying that politicians usually campaign in poetry and govern in prose.

On campaign trails, politicians are typically bullish and are sarcastically said to live in a bubble. On accession, however, the reality of office soon sets in – and the bluster of old is lost. The ease with which most politicians abandon the beautiful platitudes usually painted during electioneering campaigns when they are baptized by the reality in office is quite interesting. This syndrome had become so pervasive such that even as a spokesman, one would remain tongue-in-cheek while pontificating on the promises of your principal.

Governor Peter Mbah’s ideas were out of this world, given the parlous state of affairs in the state. He brimmed with uncommon confidence and ideas that were largely novel, even esoteric. He talked about disruptive innovation; he talked about converting the dormant assets; he talked about a quantum leap, exponential growth, and moving Enugu from the pipeline system of governance to a platform module of engagement. He captured all these within his now famous mantra: “Tomorrow is here” which isn’t just another fancy one-liner created to woo voters.

As he explained, “Tomorrow is here” speaks to the urgency of the country’s current economic outlook but from an optimistic perspective and not despondency. It is a rallying call to action, spurred by the realization that we can truly shape the social and economic realities of the future through the decisions we make today. It encapsulates our hopes and expectations about the future. It reminds us that our dreams are not Utopian as long as there exists the requisite capacity, willingness, and indeed the courage to take that vision from the realm of contemplation into an actual state of being. Besides the fact that it is an affirmative development proposition, it is essentially an abnegation of complacency.

READ ALSO: Issues in Lagos APC LG primaries

When we reminded him that these noble dreams could prove so difficult to realize, given that Enugu is about the 5th from the bottom of the federation account revenue receipts log, he baulked at such naivety. He reminded us that Enugu has every endowment that could place it at the top of consideration in the country, especially given our history, location, and the abundance of human resources available in the state. To him, Enugu remained where it was because of a lack of imagination or what he called paralysis of the will! We reminded him that as a sub-national under a party that is not in power at the federal level, such dreams could be scuttled by realpolik. He countered with a reference to Dubai, a sub-national like Enugu, and which has been transformed by the sheer vision and courage of just one man, Sheikh Rasheed bin Saeed Al Maktoum. The rest is now seemingly history!

Two years down the line, Governor Mbah has proven that the difference between ordinary and extraordinary lies in the vision, the passion, the courage, and indeed the ability to inspire those around you. He campaigned in poetry and governs in poetry. His achievements are as  breathtaking as they  are unending. Those things we had considered impossible were actually the issues he simply regards as low-hanging fruits. The International Conference Centre, previously regarded as untenable, is now one of the defining monuments in Enugu. Ditto the decrepit and abandoned Presidential Hotel and even the moribund Nike Lake Resort Hotel, which for decades were the defining and iconic landmarks in Enugu. These assets had diminished all administrations that had delved into reinventing them. But they are now beauties to behold. The sprawling Enugu United  Palm Produce Limited (UPPL), the Sunrise Flour Mill, the NIGERGAS, have all been either fully revitalized or in the process of revitalization. Remarkably, the transformation of some of them came through the platform module of engagement, where government’s credibility is enough to inspire private partnership and investment! For instance, whereas the International Conference Centre, Hotel Presidential, NIGERGAS, and a few others came through the sole financing effort of government, Sunrise Flour Mill, UPPL are coming back to life through partnerships that brought in huge private sector investments to the tune of N100bn and N40bn, respectively.

There are also emerging 260 state-of-the-art Smart Green Schools in much the same way as the 260 Type 2 Primary Health Centres simultaneously in all 260 wards of Enugu State. We now have four ultra-modern transport terminals, while Enugu Air is set to fly with three aircraft for a start.

In two years, Gov. Mbah’s scorecard is proof that the best way to silence cynics is through remarkable accomplishments. Yet, with some benefit of hindsight, you might be inclined to forgive his skeptics to whom the grand vision he outlined from the outset seemed like the usual theatrics of politics.

There’s always a sense of pride recalling the optimism stirred up by his constant reference to the Dubai experience during those early planning days. Like Dubai, which built a global emporium in the desert, Mbah is literally bringing the world to Enugu through a combination of business and leisure. In a few days’ time, Enugu Air, the state-owned airline, would make its inaugural flight into the Akanu Ibiam International Airport from Abuja to a water cannon salute and resounding applause. Recalling the entire project list is often a huge challenge. The debate regarding which project may be considered the most significant is no less challenging. No project eclipses the other in terms of significance.

Doing all these simultaneously is by no means driven by a desire to be validated or for public acclaim. Governor Mbah clearly understood that only a quantum leap – occasioned by massive capital and social investments – can sufficiently alter the uninspiring growth trajectory, of which the state had been long accustomed. So, when he talks about “disruptive innovation”, he is not merely mouthing political platitudes. He is talking about the mindset that represents a total abnegation of complacency. Mbah’s disruptive innovation speaks to the expediency of a radical vision able to harness available resources, agricultural, industrial, and human, to enthrone an economy that is increasingly less-reliant on the monthly federal allocation.

Two years ago, only a few would have believed that land documents could be processed and issued in 72 hours. But that is what currently obtains. The introduction of the Enugu State Geographical Information System has eliminated every red tape and made the process entirely transparent. Such is the power of innovation. Enugu is experiencing an industrial rebirth. It is a rebirth that banishes for good, the old narrative that casts Enugu as a “civil service state”. This is very significant. As capital of the defunct Eastern Region, Enugu is being transformed in ways that pay a fitting homage to its illustrious history. Apart from the new lease of life that the UPPL, NIGERGAS, etc. are beginning to enjoy, the revival Nike Lake Resort is currently experiencing is also emblematic of this new flurry of private enterprise sweeping across Enugu State.

Indeed, it is difficult to talk about the Mbah Administration without a prominent place for the magic he has performed in the water sector. Cracking the decades-long water challenge in Enugu City, raising water production from a paltry, yet occasional 2 million liters to 120 million liters daily within180 days is nothing short of extraordinary.  While the government is still doing more work in the reticulation aspect of the mix, Mbah has shown that determination, vision and commitment can make a world of difference.

Enugu has equally become a big construction site, from the city center to the rural communities, while the New Enugu City is taking massive shape.

It is equally remarkable that Governor Mbah views the economy of the South East through an inclusive lens. His keen pursuit of an inter-regional rail line sets him out as a man ahead of his time. The transformative power of the railway is well-established in history. Without the railway, the Industrial Revolution, which paved the way for the modern world economy, would certainly have been short-lived. Governor Mbah understands that a rail line that crisscrosses the states of the region, cutting through cities, towns, and the hinterlands, would likewise spur economic activities and prove a major boost for agriculture. There cannot be a better time to achieve that dream than presently when railways is on the Concurrent List. So, he is essentially seizing the moment.

One of the most enduring lessons of Governor Mbah’s first two years in office is the primacy that human capital enjoys. As he often rightly says, human capital is the real wealth of any nation. But he doesn’t merely pay lip service to that; he commits substantial resources to fund education. I doubt there is any government in Africa that commits a wooping 33 percent of its annual to education as Governor Mbah has consistently done in the 2024 amd 2025 anuual budgets of enugu State. More someone the outcome arising from investing in education is normally not immediately discernible. That’s the reason many politicians tend to pay only perfunctory attention to the sector. But Governor Mbah is no typical politician. He always bucks the trend. He understands that making our students competitive requires consistent requisite investment in education in order to imbue them with the right learning and skills for a merit-driven global workplace. That is why the Smart School project will unarguably rank among his best legacies.

In Governor Mbah, Enugu State has regained its groove and pride of place. He didn’t simply campaign in poetry and govern in prose, as most politicians are wont to. Governor Mbah campaigned in poetry and also governs in poetry. From modest baselines in nearly all socio-political indicators, he has grown Enugu State into a roaring economy that ticks every relevant development box. The next two years – and the subsequent term – can only be better. We often speak with confidence concerning the future when a people’s collective dreams are being curated by a visionary. For sons and daughters of Enugu, the yearning for improved living conditions is certainly not a dream deferred; it is a dream realized. Tomorrow is indeed here!

National secretary position: Mbah, Wabara, Udenwa, others back southeast PDP’s exit threat

Key leaders of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southeast have backed the zone’s threat to reconsider its relationship with the party if its choice of Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the National Secretary is not respected for the umpteenth time.

While Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu state, who is the leader of the PDP in the zone, said it was time for the zone to speak with one voice, the chairman of PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, and former governor of Imo State, Chief Achike Udenwa, expressed fury over what they described as the party’s disrespecting and trampling of the region.

The zonal caucus had vented its displeasure in a communique read by the Zonal Chairman, Chief Ali Odefa, at the end of a meeting by the Southeast Zonal Executive (ZEC) at the Government House, Enugu.

It said the meeting was convened to nominate a candidate to complete the remaining term of the position of National Secretary in line with the directive of the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, during its 600th meeting in Abuja.

According to Wabara, it was to review the region’s relationship with the party that he described as trampling on the zone by the party persisting.

“We have been trampled upon, not taken seriously. If such a position were vacant in the South-South, it would not be like this. And now, it has come to us. I mean, the usual thing is to play politics with the Igbo man. Yes, we may have to reconsider our stand as far as the party is concerned. But I trust the NWC,” he stated.

Udenwa, on his part, said, “We are expecting that this issue will be finally ironed out once and for all. We do not want to be taken for granted by anybody again.”

Rendering the communique, Odefa said, “The South East ZEC exhaustively deliberated on the directive of the NWC and came to the conclusion that it offered a sure pathway to peace, unity, stability, and progress of our party. Consequently, the ZEC unanimously recommended Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the candidate to complete the term of office of the National Secretary.”

The South East PDP, however, regretted that it had to go through the process of nominating Udeh-Okoye severally since October 2023, and urged the NWC to not only immediately ratify his nomination, but also ensure that Arch. Setonji Koshoedo effectively occupies the Office of the National Secretary in acting capacity pending Udeh-Okoye’s ratification by the NEC.

The South East PDP, however, threatened to review its continued membership of the party should its position suffer further delay despite its agelong loyalty to the PDP.

“The South East has consistently served as a stronghold of the PDP from inception. In PDP’s nearly three-decade existence, we have given our loyalty and all to the party.

“Currently, while the party has been losing key members post-2023 general elections, the South East PDP is at the vanguard of strengthening the Party by rallying major opposition figures such as in Enugu where the Labour Party, LP, gubernatorial candidate, two LP House of Representatives Members, numerous members of the House of Assembly, among other stalwarts into the PDP fold.

“Therefore, we hope that this time around, the position of the South East PDP regarding the Office of the National Secretary is accorded the honour and immediacy it deserves. This would bring closure to the needless lingering dispute over the matter.

“However, if our position is not promptly implemented by the Party, the South East PDP, as a family, will be compelled to reconsider our relationship with the PDP going forward,” the communique concluded.
