Sanwo-Olu, Mbah, others commiserate with AFRIMA boss on wife’s death

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Enugu State counterpart, Peter Mbah have joined the list of eminent personalities across Africa’s political and business circles who have expressed sympathy with Mike Dada, the President of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) over the death of his loving wife, Modupe Temitope Dada.

Modupe Dada died on Saturday, October 19, 2024, and her death has continued to draw an outpouring of sympathy from across Africa.

Lagos State Governor Sanwo-Olu was one of the first to offer his condolences, personally calling Dada to offer words of comfort.

The governor expressed deep sadness over the loss, saying Modupe was undoubtedly the pillar of support in the background of Dada’s towering achievements in Africa’s creative communication and media industries.

Sanwo-Olu described the deceased, a banker of repute, as a woman whose strength was deeply felt, even from behind the scenes and the governor urged Dada “to take solace in the beautiful memories of her life as her legacy of kindness and support would continue to live on. I stand in solidarity with you, sharing your grief and offering our heartfelt condolences. May God grant you and the entire family the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss.”

Mbah described Ijebu Ode-born banker as a woman of great character who provided stability and encouragement to her husband, while also building a warm and loving home.

“The late Modupe was a virtuous woman and a pillar of support who played a crucial role in her husband’s career and personal life. Her death has left a significant void not only in your family but also among those who had the privilege of knowing her.

“The people of Enugu share in the grief of your family and prayed for strength and comfort during this difficult time,” the Governor told Dada.

Former Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, who had known Mrs Dada since his days as the state’s Accountant-General was among the early callers.

Ambode commended Modupe’s quiet but profound impact on those around her, noting that she was a steadfast partner to her husband, especially in his efforts to promote African music and culture through AFRIMA.

He prayed for peace and strength for the family to navigate through their loss.

“She was an extraordinary partner and an exceptional woman, whose kindness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family will remain unforgettable. The support and partnership she provided throughout her journey were truly invaluable. Her legacy will continue to inspire and uplift us all,” he told Dada.

The remains of Modupe were committed to mother earth on Thursday, October 24, 2024, after a farewell service at the Grace Assembly, Yard 158, Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun-Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria.

Mbah: We’ll partner NPF to revamp police training institutions in Enugu

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu has pledged to collaborate with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to renovate the Police College in Oji River and the Police Detective College in Enugu City.

The governor said that this partnership will help restore these training institutions as centres of excellence and will strengthen the fight against crime and insecurity.

Mbah made this announcement during a visit to the Government House in Enugu by the management of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, led by the Executive Secretary, Mohammed Sheidu, and senior officials from the Nigeria Police, including Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Training, DIG Frank Mba, on Tuesday, October 8.

“We see security as our number one priority in the state. The reason is that we have a great ambition as to how our economy can grow and we do not see that happening without the private sector; and naturally, the private sector is not designed to absorb security risk. They can take other finance and commercial risks, but not security.

“So, we are pleased that we are having this engagement with you because there are some alignments in objectives here where you are proposing to build the capacity and welfare of the police personnel.

“We also believe that crime-fighting has gone beyond just standing on the road and waiting for criminals to be hunted. I think there is quite a lot that technology allows us to accomplish in the area of crime prevention and crime fighting. Therefore, we have invested hugely in the provision of some of the most modern and state-of-the-art security infrastructure here. We invested in the security surveillance camera system. The CCTV is AI-embedded and helps us to track criminals through our Distress Response Squad, DRS.

“We have also been able to train the officers working directly under the DRS. But we think we still have a lot more to do and even hearing you talk about the Police Detective College, it is for us to come back now to focus and see how we can revive that training institute.

“So, the training and the two reasons for which you are here fit perfectly into what we also hope to accomplish. We are indeed ready and more than happy to partner with you,” Mbah stated.

Sheidu said the team was in Enugu State as part of an ongoing nationwide assessment of police training institutions, noting that the Police College, Oji River, and the Police Detective College had played critical roles in producing some of the finest officers in the Nigeria Police and needed to be restored to their old glories.

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has charged the newly elected Local Government chairmen in the state to be creative and innovative in their performance while focusing on optimising values that will create solutions through lean spending.

This is even as the council chairmen pledged to align their administration’s goals and objectives with the governor’s robust policies of disruptive innovation to bring quality governance to the grassroots.

The governor, who gave this charge, over the weekend in Enugu, at an ongoing three-day Enugu State Local Government Executive Leadership Retreat, with the theme, ‘Aligning Strategy for Sustainable Economic and Infrastructure Delivery at the Local Government Level,’ reminded the council chairmen and their deputies that the euphoria of honeymoon was long over, saying it’s time to hit the ground running in their respective local governments.

Advising the participants on effective leadership, the governor said everybody in the council areas was looking up to them to deliver on their promises which should take the path of a fast-paced governance model for their impact to be meaningful.

“When you develop your strategies, what will keep you moving is your love for your people. You must have a clear action plan. As a leader you must have measurable indicators. Your vision and action plan must be strategic and borne out of a framework that will guide your structure. In the private sector, you must have your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis. The same applies to the public sector,” Governor Mbah added.

While tasking them on transparency, prudence, accountability, and accessibility to the people, the governor reiterated that public money, which is not their personal property,  must be used for the collective interest of the people.

Speaking on optimal performance, Mbah said the only way council leaders could transform their areas was through disruptive innovation, target setting, key performance indicators, frequent review and evaluation management, and thinking outside the box to disrupt the status quo.

The governor shared these sentiments in his goodwill message to the people of Enugu State and all Nigerians in celebration of the nation’s 64th Independence Anniversary on Tuesday, October 1.

“On this milestone celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, I congratulate Ndi Enugu – and, indeed, all Nigerians.

Mbah awards scholarships, cash to Enugu students for winning national debate championship

Enugu Governor Peter Mbah has awarded scholarships up to university level as well as cash rewards to the four representatives of the State, who also won the 25th edition of the President’s Inter-Secondary School Debate Championship in Abuja.

The victorious contingent is made up of Emmanuella Chukwuma of Holy Rosary College, Enugu; Chiamaka Okwuibe of Queen’s School, Enugu; Goodness Chinedu Chiemerie of St. Patrick’s College, Emene, Enugu; and Chibuikem Ukadike of the College of the Immaculate Conception(CIC), Enugu. Mr. Malachi Eze of CIC and Mrs. Joy Agbala of the Post Secondary School Management Board (PPSMB), coordinated and prepared the team.

Receiving the team, which was at the Government House, Enugu, to present the trophy to him, Mbah said the victory showed that his administration’s investment in education was paying off, reiterating his government’s wealth creation drive and the non-kinetic aspect of the war on insecurity were heavily dependent on education.

“When we made the pronouncement that we were going to spend 33 per cent of our budget on education; that for every N100, we will spend N33 on education, a lot of people thought it was mere posturing or perhaps to earn public acclaim.

“But we knew that if we are to achieve a zero per cent rate on poverty headcount index, we must do something that is radical in our education sector.

“If we must also deal with insecurity in a non-kinetic manner, then education will be the only answer because a lot of our young people, who resort to criminality, do so because they lack skill.

“So, in Enugu State, we have taken the view that if we get education right, and if we can anchor every other thing we do in terms of development around education, we will be sure that we have the highest wealth or the highest resource in Enugu. And what you have done is a testament to the fact that we are connecting the dots rightly,” the g6overnor said.

Commending the team for making the State proud, he announced scholarships and cash awards to them in addition to supporting them, having qualified to represent Nigeria at an international debate competition in the United States.

“We are going to make sure that we invest sufficiently in you so that you get prepared for the global event. We are also going to make sure that as you pursue your academic career, that we are going to be there with you. We are going to provide you with scholarships to pursue your university education,” he stated.

Governor Mbah commended the Chairman of the PPSMB, Rev. Fr. Hilary Mgbodile, for insisting on merit in selecting the team in line with his government’s philosophy.

“Merit is the driver of everything we do in this administration, even with the way we set up our team. We recognised that we have laudable ideas and vision, but if the selection of the team was towards politics, then we would have failed from the beginning. Therefore, we made sure we went for the best of our best.

“We are going to continue to double down on our investment in the education sector. We want to make sure that when a reference is made on Enugu, then we will be referencing on Enugu’s smart kids. We will not be talking about Nigeria and the world without talking about Enugu children,” he said.

Presenting the trophy, the team captain, Emmanuella Chukwuma, thanked the Governor for prioritising education in the State.

“Our achievement is a testament to the expected fruits of the huge investment you are making in education. It also testifies to the enormity of talents in Enugu State education system and the intellectual process of our young people. As you rightly emphasised in your address during your 100 days in office, “education is the key to unlocking the potential of the youth and driving economic growth,” she stated.

She assured the Governor and the State that the team would not let them down in the international competition in the USA and their future pursuits.

Ogui Nike communities beg Gov Mbah to stop ESHDC alleged encroachment at Aguowor

The Ogui Nike and Umunevo Ogui Nike Communities of Enugu North local government have pleaded with Governor Peter Mbah to cancel the purported acquisition of their land at Agwowor for sale to the public by the Enugu State Housing Development Corporation (ESHDC).

Enugu township Communities said that they do not have any other land, even to bury their dead, because they have give all their land for the development of the Eastern Nigeria capital city.

The Ogui Nike communities said that they were more worried because the State Government agency despite its knowledge that the disputed land is a subject of litigation in the Enugu State high Court, went ahead to encroach on the land.

In an open letter to Governor Mbah titled “Take over of our communal Land by Enugu State Housing Development Corporation,” the federated Communities through the President General of Ogui Nike, Ifesinachi Alum and the Vice President General of Umunevo Ogui Nike Community, Onyinye Nwankwoani, said: “We are the representatives of the people of Ogui Nike and Umunevo Ogui Nike Communities both of Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State.

“We had on two previous occasions written Your Excellency on the above subject matter, the first letter was received by your office on the 5th of August, 2024 while the 2nd letter was received on the 13th of September, 2024.

“Since both letters have not gotten the required attention, coupled with the fact that the Enugu State Housing Development Corporation are currently defacing the subject matter and selling same to the unsuspecting members of the public, we decided to use this medium, taking into cognizance, that, Your Excellency, may not have seen the earlier letters.

“While we acknowledge the good work which Your Excellency is doing all over the state, you have also shown us good faith when you flagged off the construction of Enugu Township roads on our Aguowor land, and true to your word, the road was completed and commissioned in record time with street lights. However, we must inform Your Excellency of the actions of certain government agencies capable of tarnishing the image of this administration.

“The immediate past administration led by Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi forcefully took over our land known as Aguowor Land which has from time immemorial, been the communal land of the people of Ogui Nike and Umunevo Ogui Nike. We have over the years exercised various acts of ownership and possession over the said land. We have made three registered layouts over the area, namely; Owor River Layout, Premier Layout and Premier Layout Extension, with a very large area of land still not parcellated.

“It is on record that Ogui Nike and Umunevo Ogui Nike, more than any other community, have contributed its vast land to and for the development of Enugu capital, to wit, Ogui Township, Asata, Part of Uwani, Part of G.R.A, Coal Camp, Independence Layout, and Part of Independence Layout Phase 2.

“Upon the said forceful take over of our land by the immediate past administration and the demolition of our houses, we filed suit number E/555/21 between PAUL ANIKE & ORS V GOVERNOR OF ENUGU STATE & ORS, upon service of the suit on the immediate past administration, they stayed all actions concerning the land.

“But to our uttermost chagrin, the Enugu State Housing Development Corporation, irrespective of the fact, that this administration is led by Lawyers, brazenly entered and started selling to the public, for as much as, N55,000,000.00 (Fifty Five Million) Naira and named it COAL CITY EASTERN EXTENSION ESTATE ALLIANCE, ENUGU, irrespective of the pending suit over the subject matter.

“The action of the Enugu State Housing Development Corporation negates the concept of Rule of Law and is capable of ridiculing everything your administration stands for and also constitutes a mockery of the Judiciary.

“We do not question the powers of a State Governor to acquire land but the acquisition should be in line with the law and done for overriding public interest. Finally, our people having lost more than 80% of our communal land to successive governments’ acquisitions, no longer have land anywhere to erect our houses or to even bury our dead.

“We therefore, as your people who are proud of what you have achieved within just 15 months in office, request that you cancel the purported acquisition in the interest of justice, or in the alternative, direct the government agencies involved to stay all actions pending the conclusion of the suit.”

Smart schools: Mbah flags-off experiential learning centre

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has flagged off the construction of a Centre for Experiential Learning and Innovation as part of his administration’s sustainability plans for the Smart Green School system in the state.

The centre, which is situated at the Enugu State College of Education (Technical), Enugu and comprises 25 model classrooms, ICT hub, and an e-library, among other hi-tech sections and equipment will serve as a training and retraining hub to groom teachers in digital innovation, mechatronics, artificial intelligence, robotics, and such related areas to be able to function optimally in delivering knowledge in the state’s 260 smart schools.

“The Experiential Learning and Innovation centre, as the governor envisioned it, is a centre responsible for making sure that all Smart teachers already experience the Enugu Smart Green Schools before they graduate from the Enugu College of Education Technical, ESCET, as students.

“Experiential learning is being practised in universities. So, Enugu is the first to introduce it in primary and post-primary schools.

“So, before you even send teachers for the teaching practice, they need to have spent time in the Centre for Experiential Learning and Innovation to develop those pedagogical skills that they need to succeed in the Smart Green School.

Tinubu, Mbah flag off 2024 women’s August meeting in Enugu

The wife of the President, Senator Remi Tinubu, and the wife of the governor of Enugu State, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, have flagged off the 2024 Annual August Meeting in Enugu State, calling for synergy and action against all forms of abuse.

Senator Tinubu and Mrs. Mbah commended the August Meeting initiative as a veritable platform to rally women for community development, noting that it is a reminder that individual contributions and selfless service were crucial to the nation’s progress.

Flagging off the state’s 2024 edition of the meeting themed ‘Eliminating Abuse to Foster a Healthy Society,’ the wife of the president, who was represented by the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, said, “This annual tradition provides a vital platform for our mothers, daughters, and sisters to gather and address pressing societal issues, mobilizing women in community building, political participation and community development.

“This year’s theme is a clarion call to action. Abuse in all its forms is a scourge that we must eradicate. Every individual has the right to safety, free from physical, domestic, sexual, psychological, emotional, financial, and material discrimination, among others.

“Let us also remember that abuse starts and ends with us, either as victims or as perpetrators. I, therefore, urge us all to rise to the challenge of eliminating abuse and fostering a healthy society for all of us. We must speak up and speak out against abuse.”

She urged Nigerians to learn to dialogue responsibly and work together to foster a sense of empathy, and compassion towards one another, restating her resolve to better the lives of Nigerian women through her pet project, the Renewed Hope Initiative.

“In education, we have provided scholarships to our children and youth across the country, with some having opportunities to study abroad. In agriculture, we have supported our women farmers with fertilizers and farming implements,” she stated

“Very soon, we will be starting the Renewed Hope Women Economic Empowerment for 1000 petty traders in each state of the federation and the FCT. Our women will be supported with ₦50,000 each to recapitalize and support their businesses. Under our social investment programme, there is a scheme that provides for assorted food items, moving from one state to another,” Senator Oluremi Tinubu stated.

In her remarks, the wife of the Enugu State governor, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, while thanking the president’s wife for accepting to flag off the 2024 edition of August Meeting in the state, which she described as “an important and culturally symbolic month for women in Igboland”, added that Enugu women were “hugely inspired by the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative, as it has stirred the spirit of self-reliance in women through its numerous empowerment programmes.”

She said that the August Meeting was underpinned by the knowledge that governments alone could not possibly provide the entire needs of communities; hence, the need to bridge the needed gap and complement governments’ efforts.

She also said that this philosophy inspired her pet project, Custos Care Foundation, through which she is making efforts to better the lives of Enugu women.

“For instance, just a few months ago, we launched the Mama Care Initiative, which enrolled 1,701 expectant mothers into a one-year insurance scheme. This is in addition to the 100 expectant mothers, who were previously enrolled. This initiative was launched as a boost to the government’s effort to eradicate maternal and infant mortality in Enugu State.

“Our August Meeting is also replete with similar leave-no-one-behind projects. It is such projects that have made the August Meeting a formidable socio-cultural and economic creation that has endured for ages,” Mrs. Mbah concluded.
