Mbappe’s future in spotlight as Ligue 1 returns

Paris Saint-Germain resume their Ligue 1 title bid after the winter break against last season’s runners-up Lens as the focus sharpens increasingly on the future of France captain Kylian Mbappe.

The league’s top scorer for each of the past five seasons, Mbappe’s contract with the French champions runs out at the end of June and he is free to sign an agreement to join a new club for the 2024-25 campaign.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi reiterated his stance this week that the club is the best place for the 25-year-old amid endless speculation he will join Real Madrid in the summer.

“I’m not going to hide that I want Kylian to stay,” Al-Khelaifi told broadcaster RMC.“The best player in the world is Kylian and the best club for him is Paris.”

Reports in Spain suggest Madrid want Mbappe to commit by January 15, but he insists no decision has been made, and those around him said he would not be rushed into doing so by any ultimatum.

Liverpool have also been linked with the World Cup winner, who has spoken with the Premier League leaders in the past, notably meeting with them when he was still at Monaco in 2017.

While PSG look well on course for a record-extending 12th  league crown, and 10th in the past 12 seasons, any sudden developments in the long-running Mbappe saga could unsettle Luis Enrique’s squad.

The shortlist for the women’s best player includes two 2023 World Cup champions, Aitana Bonmati and Jennifer Hermoso from Spain, alongside Linda Caicedo, who represents Colombia.

Nigeria’s Adams face-off  against Mbappe in Ligue 1 contest

Two of the best goal-poachers in the French Ligue 1, PSG’s Kylian Mbappe and Montpellier’s Akor Adams will square up on Friday.

Mbappe is two goals ahead of Adams in the 10-week league with the Nigerian netting seven goals so far after a brace in Montpellier’s 3-0 home win over Toulouse at the Stade de la Mosson.

Also,  Mbappe continued his return to goalscoring form with a brace of his own in PSG’s dramatic win at Brest.

Adams – a summer signing from Norwegian side Lillestrøm – fired his sixth goal of the season after getting on the end of Téji Savanier’s pinpoint pass to put Montpellier in front against Toulouse.

And the Nigerian was at it again 18-minutes from time to finish off Carles Martinez’s men after good work from Joris Chotard, as he moved up to seven goals for the season.

Despite Adams’ heroics, Mbappé remains the man to beat after his double in PSG’s 3-2 win at Brest. The 24-year sensation fired the reigning champions in front at Stade Francis Le Blé with his trademark near-post finish, similar to his midweek Champions League strike against AC Milan.

Mbappé fired PSG’s winner and his tenth goal of the season when quick reactions handed him a second bite at the cherry after his initial penalty was saved by Marco Bizot.

Meanwhile, The FIFA international referee Ruddy Buquet is set to take charge of the game between PSG and Montpellier at the Parc des Princes, on Matchday 11 of Ligue 1.

Buquet will be assisted by Guillaume Debart and Julien Pacelli, with Benjamin Lepaysant as the fourth official. Jérémie Pignard and William Lavis, will act as the video assistant referees.

Ligue 1: Fleet-footed Akor pairs Mbappe in Team of the Week

Montpellier attacker Akor Jerome Adams has been rated above French forward Kylian Mbappe at the end of French Ligue 1 Matchday Nine matches as L’Equipe named him in the Team of the Week following his brace in his side’s 3-0 home thrashing of Toulouse.

Adams, in his debut season in the French League, started the season with a brace against Le Havre on August 13th and he has not looked back ever since following his two goals again in their 3-0 home win over Toulouse last weekend.

It was on the strength of this that L’Equipe rated him 8/10 and he is just only one of the three players with similar ratings with the others being Argentine’s Facundo Axel Medina of RC Lens and Frenchman Florian Sotoca .

Though Mbappe also scored a brace last weekend in PSG’s away win at Brest , he only got 7 rating fo his effort but has been picked to partnered Nigeria’s Adams in the attack for the MatchDay Nine’s Team of the Week.

Adams with seven goals from nine games is only behind France and PSG striker, Mbappe in the race for the French League highest score with French World Cup winner on 10 goals from the same number of games.

Meanwhile, Adams by the virtue of the two goals he scored last weekend against Toulouse, is the first Montpellier player to reach seven goals after the opening nine games in the French Ligue One.

Adams and Montpellier must gird their loins as they visit the capital city this Friday in a blockbuster fixture with PSG. He will be privileged to play face to face with Mbappe.

PSG owner tips Mbappe for Ballon d’Or

Speaking in front of various French media outlets including RMC Sport, Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi backed star striker and France captain Kylian Mbappe  for this year’s Ballon d’Or. Despite a tumultuous summer with a strained relationship to the club, it seems that Mbappe’s relationship to PSG has somewhat warmed.

“Kylian is part of the family,” began Al-Khelaifi on Mbappe, emphasising a close-nit relationship between the player and the club. “I am proud of what he is doing – and what the whole team is achieving.”

The PSG president then emphatically declared “We have the best player in the world, and in my opinion, he deserves the Ballon d’Or.”

Such an endorsement marks a changing of the relationship between the Qatari boss and his star player.

Mbappe’s contract situation has been a source of speculation and tension throughout the summer. His existing contract with PSG is set to expire on June 30, 2024. In a bold move in June, Mbappe expressed his intent to see out his current contract without extension, a stance that did not sit well with PSG’s leadership.

The ensuing standoff threatened to cast a shadow over the club’s preparations for the season. Amidst rumours of a potential pre-contract agreement with Real Madrid, Mbappe found himself temporarily sidelined. However, the storm seems to have subsided, and the French international made his long-awaited return to the pitch on August 19th  against Toulouse.

Since making his return, the Frenchman has scored eight goals in five appearances in all competitions for PSG this season. He’ll face Marseille in the Le Classique this evening at the Parc des Princes (Kick off 21:00 local time). Ethiopia’s Assefa smashes women’s marathon record

Ethiopian Tigist Assefa smashed the women’s marathon world record by more than two minutes in Berlin yesterday  as Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge won the men’s race for a record fifth time.

Assefa clocked 2hr 11min 53sec, more than two minutes ahead of the previous world mark of 2:14:04 set by Kenyan Brigid Kosgei in Chicago in 2019.

“I wanted to break the marathon world record, but I couldn’t imagine that it would result in a time under 2:12,” said the 29-year-old. “I am very happy.”

Assefa said she held back in the first half of the race “so that I wouldn’t be tired in the second half… in the second part, I could bring a lot more power into it.”

She said she hoped her win would “motivate many talented women, not only those on a high level but those who may be lower down to rise up.”

Assefa finished almost six minutes ahead of Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui. Tanzanian Magdalena Shauri finished third, nearly seven minutes behind Assefa.

Chepkirui told reporters she “had to suffer in the second half”, but said “I’m happy, I’m on the podium.”

Assefa broke away early in perfect conditions in the German capital and maintained her pace to become the fourth woman to set the world record in Berlin but the first since Japan’s Naoko Takahashi in 2001.

Assefa crossed the line just after men’s world record holder Kipchoge won his race in 2hr 02min 42sec.

Kipchoge finished 31sec ahead of countryman Vincent Kipkemoi with Ethiopian Tadese Takele third at 42sec.

Kipchoge’s fifth Berlin win takes him past Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie’s four victories but the Kenyan finished outside his previous world record, set last year in Berlin, of 2:01:09.

“Sure, I expected myself to be able to set a world record again, but I can live with the fact that it didn’t work out,” Kipchoge told the post-race press conference. “The beauty of sport is to accept the outcome and move on” Kipchoge said “sport is really beautiful”.

Asked what had changed from his first win in Berlin to his last, he said “running is no longer an individual event, running is a team event.”

Kipchoge, who has won the last two Olympic golds, looked forward to the 2024 Games in Paris, saying he “hoped to repeat his victory” but said he would be “happy (to be on) the podium”.

Despite doubts after a surprise sixth-place at the Boston Marathon in April, 38-year-old Kipchoge said he felt he was “coming home” at where he has set the world record at twice.

Kipchoge and Ethiopian Derseh Kindie pulled away from the pack early, the two crossing the halfway point with a split of 60:21, slower than the Kenyan’s 2022 world-record time of 59:51.

Kindie, whose personal best stands seven minutes outside the world mark, kept pace with Kipchoge until 31 kilometres, where he suddenly fell back and appeared to drop out of the race, walking gingerly on the footpath as other runners overtook him.

Kipchoge kept up his pace and crossed the line well clear of other runners for a record fifth win.

Two minutes before the marathon began, police dragged climate protesters carrying buckets of orange paint off the course within sight of the runners standing on the starting blocks.

Only traces of paint remained as the race began on time.

Berlin mayor Kai Wegner started the race pressing a red buzzer, the organisers feeling the traditional starting pistol was inappropriate in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
