‘MC Oluomo still NURTW head in Lagos’

Leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle (Sego) has reaffirmed the leadership of Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo) in the Lagos state council pending the election at the national level.

Adekunle said he will assume the leadership of the union as soon as Akinsanya is elected as the national president.

He said that was the agreement reached at meetings with the national body and the Lagos state government.

He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former union president Alhaji Najeem Yasin, Commissioner of Police Adegoke Fayoade, and other stakeholders for their timely intervention during the disagreement over the leadership tussle.

“I’m the Coordinator of MC Oluomo for President and by the grace of God, we shall ensure his emergence. After his (MC Oluomo) swearing-in as National President in Abuja, I will be sworn-in as the Lagos State Chairman while Adekunle Ojora (Kudeti) will take over the position of Treasurer. I hereby solicit support for him. It is normal to have disagreement and that has been settled amicably. I urge everyone to close ranks and continue to live as one big family,” he said.

  • We stand by MC Oluomo, says Hon. Akinwande

We stand by MC Oluomo, says Hon. Akinwande

The Chairman, Arapapo Olori Odo Aworiland, Hon. Ganiu Akinwande has affirmed that Awori indigenes are in support of the re-election of Alhaji Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo as National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) state chairman.

A statement by Hon. Akinwande titled: “Lagos NURTW: The stand of the Awori people” commended Lagos governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for seeing to the successful re-transition of the Lagos State Parks and Garage Management into NURTW.

He said: “It is important to commend the tranquil reelection of Alhaji Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo as the state chairman.

“It’s worthy of mention that Akinsanya’s reelection is a testament to his admirable leadership capabilities and the confidence the transport workers and the state government, by extension, have in him to continue his meritorious work of selflessly paddling the canoe of the union.

“On this note, we congratulate Akinsanya – an illustrious Awori man for his reelection as he continues his effort to reposition road transport activities in Lagos state in line with the smart city agenda of Mr. Governor.

Hon. Akinwande noted that as stakeholders in the state, the Awori’s selfless interest lies in the continuous socio-economic development of Lagos.

He said: “NURTW, under the qualitative leadership of MC Oluomo, has recorded remarkable feats, most of which are unprecedented in the history of Lagos State.

“From the smooth running of the union’s day-to-day affairs to ensuring orderliness, peace and esprit de corps among members, and also steadily contributing to the socioeconomic growth of our dear centre of excellence. This is our interest and we will ensure it is protected.

“The possibility of MC Oluomo taking up a leadership position at the National body has seemingly brought about a crack in the leadership structure in Lagos NURTW and this is being spearheaded by the incumbent treasurer, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle aka Sego who has begun putting himself forward for the number one leadership seat in Lagos.

“In a situation like this, the constitution of the union is explicitly clear on what needs to be done to fill the chairmanship seat. It’s for the Deputy chairman to step up or the chairman to use his prerogative.

“As concerned sons of Awori who have the mandate of other Awori indigenes to comment on this matter, we call on the state government and other powers-that-be to call Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle to order to forestall the likely breakdown of law and order in the state.

“We’ve observed with keen interest how Awori was deliberately excluded from the sensitive political positions in the state. Who gets unfairly marginalised in their own state? Of the 57 LGA and LCDA chairmen in Lagos, only a handful are Aworis. Ditto for the commissioners and other appointees holding key positions. This is another reason why we won’t fold our arms to allow our rights to be trampled upon.

“The chairmanship seat of the NURTW position is the only leadership position given to Awori, and it will be a slap to our face and our ancestors if we allow it to be taken from us with sheer mischief-making and grandstanding by uncouth elements.”

“As law-abiding indigenes of Lagos and individuals who believe in the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, we want a peaceful resolution, one that will promote equity and fairness and afford MC Oluomo the support he deserves in the final lap of his term in office as the State Chairman of Lagos NURTW.

“Also on the matter of the stance mischievously attributed to the respected Monarch, HRM Oba Saheed Elegushi, a revered Awori monarch whom we all hold in the highest esteem.

“Over the years, he has proven his worth as a man of integrity, honour and valor who wouldn’t comment against the wishes of his people. We don’t believe the comment attributed to him on this matter as we believe that we have his backing in, advancing our fair cause.

“Our stance is clear, we won’t give room for imposition. The sons and daughters of Awori are solidly behind MC Oluomo on this cause and we want an equitable resolution to the matter at hand.

Hon. Akinwande urged the government and other stakeholders in the state, monarchs and individuals to wade into the matter and ensure the Aworis are not marginalised.

MC Oluomo blames ex-NURTW president for union crisis

The Chairman of National Union of Road Transport Worker (NURTW), Lagos State Council, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (aka MC Oluomo), yesterday blamed the former National President, Tajudeen Baruwa, for the crisis in the union.

In a statement issued yesterday, Akinsanya said Baruwa’s overbearing actions without recourse to the union’s constitution were responsible for the crisis.

He accused Baruwa of trying to create fracas in the Lagos State chapter of the union when he appointed another state chairman to handle the tricycle operators (Keke Marwa), thus having two chairmen in one state, which became a panacea for anarchy.

Akinsanya recalled that he was instrumental to the emergence of Baruwa as President of the union in 2019.

He said: “As Chairman of the Lagos State chapter, I performed my duties diligently fulfilling all my constitutional responsibilities and maintaining the hard won peace in Lagos State. This role was admirably felt all over the Southwest and I was also elected as the Zonal Vice-Chairman of Zone 2. In all of these, I have conducted myself within the ambit of the law and constitution guiding our operations in NURTW.

“All went well until the illegal and unconstitutional interference in the affairs of the Lagos State Chapter, and by extension, the Southwest by the Baruwa when he decided to appoint another state chairman to handle the tricycle operators (Keke Marwa) thus having two chairmen in one state, which became a panacea for anarchy. This appointment, which was strange to our constitution and a sinister move to destabilize our operations in Lagos State, led to outright panic.

The intervention of notable Lagosians and unionists did not go down well with Baruwa who only saw Lagos State as part of a grand design to annihilate the Southwest.

“When Baruwa went ahead to purportedly suspend me from the union, I had the option of staying put and allowing all we have achieved in terms of peace in Lagos State to go down or to activate a Plan B. I opted for the latter. As a strong believer in the Rule of Law, I caused a suit to be filed at the National Industrial Court challenging the various illegal conducts of Baruwa, I moved to the Lagos State Parks and Garages and interestingly, the entire union members in Lagos State followed me as they believed in my leadership.”

Akinsanya accused Baruwa of “disrupting union activities in the Southwest that Lagos Oyo, Ogun, Osun Ondo had no union at all and this has led to institution of court cases at the National Industrial Court where the court granted an Order of Status Quo ante bellum as at April 12. The implication of that was that the South West Zone could not have held any zonal election after April 12. This stalemate led to the inauguration of a Caretaker Committee headed by Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede and 24 other notable unionists across Nigeria.

“This Caretaker Committee in order to move forward has reached out to all members who were forced out by Baruwa and we have embraced peace and returned home.

“Let me state that the National Elders are not the first set of people to call for reconciliation. Various Governors in Southwest had done the same. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) under Comrade Ayuba Wabba as President and Alhaji Najeemdeen Yasin as the deputy president also made efforts. We were invited three different times. While we wasted money for flights to and fro Abuja, Baruwa did not honour any of the NLC invitations.

“The constitution of the NURTW in order to allow for inclusiveness has zoned their offices from time to time. The current zoning arrangement has zoned the President, Vice President and Trustee to Zone 2, which is the Southwest for two terms of four years each. For any member to aspire for these posts, the zone must nominate such individuals at a Special Zonal Conference/Delegate Conference for onward ratification by the National body at a special Delegate Conference. It is also noteworthy that during the administration of Baruwa, the activities of NURTW were suspended in five of the six states. The only state functioning was Ekiti. The legal position is that with the expiration of the term of office of Baruwa, the term of the chairmen of the various states has also expired. With the new found reconciliation, a Zonal Congress can now be convened where nominees for National Offices will be done.

This is in contrast to the sinister and unconstitutional motive of Organizing the Kangaroo Delegate Conference in Nasarawa, which can be described as Awadakerikeri.”

Akinsanya appealed to NLC leadership to allow the union to organise themselvess without undue interference and bias.

“The outgone president is still a member of our great union and if he is still interested in seeking re-election, he should make recourse to the Zone 2 (Southwest) for nomination and adoption,” he said.

NURTW lifts suspension on MC Oluomo, others

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has lifted the suspension order slammed on the Lagos State Chairman of the union, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (aka MC Oluomo) and other members by the former president of the union, Alhaji Tajudeen Baruwa.

The newly-inaugurated National President, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, lifted the suspension in his inaugural address in Abuja.

He said one of the problems created by the Baruwa administration was the arbitrary suspension and expulsion of members he considered as his enemies.

“Through this, he destroyed the union, especially in the Southwest. So, I, Alhaji Agbede, on behalf of other members of my executives, leaders and members of our union throughout the country, hereby lift the illegal suspension of our esteemed members throughout the country.

“Of particular concern is the suspension of Alhaji Akinsanya, the Lagos State chairman of our union. He was unjustifiably treated by Alhaji Baruwa. It was a pure case of misuse of power. We hereby appeal to Alhaji Akinsanya to come back home. NURTW is one big family and this is where he belongs,” he said.

Agbede said he will ensure all state councils of the union currently under the state-owned Park and Garages Committee returns to NURTW.

“By the special grace of God, we shall meet Southwest governors for discussion on how to work together. We will cooperate with them in Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Lagos, Ondo and Ekiti states to get our union back on track. It is a new dawn in NURTW,” he added.

On other plans, he said the union will work with the Federal Government to ensure that people benefit from government programmes.

  • MC Oluomo discharged from hospital, travels abroad

A chieftain of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Musiliu Akinsanya a.k.a MC Oluomo, was on Tuesday night discharged from a Lagos hospital, where he was receiving treatment.

MC Oluomo was attacked at an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Ikeja on Jan. 8, and was immediately taken to Eko Hospital, following injuries he sustained.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who visited the Eko Hospital in Ikeja on Wednesday, gathered that MC Oluomo left the hospital on Tuesday night after payment of over N2 million medical bill.

A very reliable source, who preferred anonymity, told NAN that the NURTW leader may have left for the United States immediately he was discharged from hospital on Tuesday night.

“He is very fine and has nothing to worry about his health after his treatment at the hospital. Before he finally left on Tuesday night, he was receiving a lot of well-wishers.

“Sometimes, he moves around and sometimes walks his visitors to the corridor, so he was in a sound health before leaving the hospital.

“Few days before he left the hospital, his associates were making arrangements for his trip,’’ the source said.

NAN also observed that there was no more police presence around the hospital, as the three police vehicles stationed there had been removed.

The Lagos State Police Command had said it arrested some suspects and also declared wanted another NURTW chieftain over the disruption of the APC rally in Lagos.

The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Chike Oti, had said that those arrested in connection with the incident were helping the police in their investigation.

  • How NURTW chief, MC Oluomo, was stabbed, by K1 Publicist

The Publicist of Fuji maestro, Wasiu Ayinde Anifowoshe, Kunle Rasheed has narrated the events that led to the stabbing of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Lagos State Treasurer Musiliu Akinsanya (a.k.a MC Oluomo) during the rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Skypower Grounds, Ikeja Government Reservation Area (GRA) last Tuesday.

According to him, the crisis, which was purely union matter, started between NURTW State Auditor Adekunle Mustapha (Sego) and Idumota Chairman Azeez Lawal (a.k.a Kunle Poly) on K1’s stage.

He said: “Both of them (Mustapha and Lawal) had issues on K1’s stage and K1 waded into the matter. At a point, Mustapha left the stage. Not quite long. MC Oluomo came on stage and exchanged greetings with K1, NURTW State Chairman, Tajudeen Agbede. As at that time, the boys of Sego and Kunle Poly had started fighting on the ground. So, it was not safe for MC Oluomo to leave the stage until one of Kunle Poly’s boys came on stage and threatening to kill MC Oluomo with a dagger. Agbede slapped him three times and chased him away. K1 also joined him to chase him away from the stage. He later returned to the stage and stabbed MC Oluomo and one Abija. That was how it happened.”

According to him, if not for K1, the crisis would have been bigger than that as he repeatedly talking to both warring parties to douse the tension.

“I was on the stage with them. I was there all through. K1 tried his best to resolve the crisis between the NURTW leaders over the State Chairmanship tussle even before that rally. People should stop accusing K1 of not doing enough to resolve their crisis,” he said.

Rasheed denied that the musician abuse Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, which some said led the supporters of the governor to start the crisis.

According to him, the track people were referring to has nothing to do with Ambode.

“If you check the new album he made for (Babajide) Sanwo-Owu, that track is there. He has even sang the track long before the crisis started. The track is all about APC and the party’s governorship candidate,” he said.

On why K1 continue singing while Ambode was making his speech, Rasheed described it as normal practice.

“If you are at the APC Convention in Abuja, the instruction was that as soon as someone is introduced, K1 will sing. Same thing happened at the Skypower Grounds, K1 started singing when Governor Ambode handed the party’s flag to Sanwo-Olu and that has nothing to do with the crisis. He didn’t abuse or insulted Governor Ambode as some are peddling,” he said.

  • MC Oluomo: Taskforce warns against spreading fake death news

Lagosians have been warned to stop spreading fake death news of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Lagos State Treasurer Musiliu Akinsanya (a.k.a MC Oluomo).

Those caught, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) on Monday said, will be prosecuted.

A statement by Taskforce spokesman Taofiq Adebayo reiterated that the latest rumour about Oluomo’s death circulating around the social media is not “TRUE.”

According to him, the agency’s Chairman, Olayinka Egbeyemi, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), confirmed that Akinsanya is not dead as being circulated but recuperating at the hospital.

He stated that the ‘dead’ of the NURTW leader was being rumoured by miscreants and hoodlums who want to foment trouble and cause panic around Oshodi and other major motor parks in Lagos.

Egbeyemi called on NURTW leadership to immediately call their members across the state to order, noting that the Commissioner of Police CP Imohimi Edgal has directed that any miscreant or hoodlum caught causing or disturbing the peace of innocent members of the public would not be spared.

Egbeyemi said: “Once again we are using this medium to seriously warn miscreants and hoodlums who might want to foment mayhem to desist or face the full wrath of the Law. We are also urging parents and guardians to closely monitor the activities of their wards.

“The agency would continue the use of patrol vans and power-bikes to patrol around all nooks and cranny of the entire Oshodi area to forestall any possibility of brake-down of law and order.”

He urged members of the public not to be panic and be going about their lawful businesses around Oshodi and other parts of the state.

Chairman of Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area Idris Muse-Ariyoh said Akinsanya will soon to return home.

Ariyoh said: “There is no problem in Oshodi. Anyone trying to cause mayhem will be dealt with in accordance with the law. It is a rumour that there is a crisis in Oshodi. Oshodi is peaceful. People are going about their normal duties without panic.”

  • NURTW chief, MC Oluomo, is alive, says aide

The Chairman of Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area Idris Muse-Ariyoh on Thursday debunked news on social media that there was crisis in Oshodi.

Also, an aide of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) leader in Oshodi and State Treasurer Musiliu Akinsanya (a.k.a MC Oluomo), Buhari Jimoh described as “fake news” the rumour that MC Oluomo is dead.

Rising from a security meeting, Muse-Ariyoh called on people to remain calm and go about their normal business.

Those at the meeting included the three Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), representatives of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the State Environment and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce), the Elewu of Ewutuntun Oba Shakirudeen Adesina Kuti and Secretary to the Local Government.

“We have the backing of the Commissioner of Police to make Oshodi secure,” Muse-Ariyoh told reporters, adding “There is no problem in Oshodi. Anyone trying to cause mayhem will be dealt with in accordance with the law. It is a rumour that there is a crisis in Oshodi. Oshodi is peaceful. People are going about their normal duties without panic.

“What happened in Ikeja on Tuesday was purely NURTW affairs. Unfortunately, MC Oluomo, who was injured is responding well to treatment and he should return home in few days to come,” he said.

He warned the youth to refrain from violence act and avoid being used as political thugs.

Oba Kuti urged parents to warn their children against violence.

“Your children must not be used to foment trouble. Whoever is caught will be prosecuted and we’ll not intervene,” the monarch said.

Jimoh urged the people not to panic, saying MC Oluomo is alive.

“We do not know what those peddling the rumour stand to benefit. It is wrong to create unnecessary fears in society. Oluomo is receiving treatment in the hospital,” he said.
