Nollywood actresses Tonto Dikeh and Mercy Aigbe at the weekend, broke down in tears as they particpated in the Stop Violence Agaunst Women campaign organised by Olori Wuraola Ogunwusi in Lagos.

Recently, both Mercy and Tonto have left their matrimonial homes, citing violence by their spouses, Lanre Gentry and Olakunle Churchill, respectively.

Dressed in white and black T-shirts with the inscription ‘Stop the violence against women’, they carried placards with messages like ‘verbal abuse is domestic violence’, ‘emotional abuse is deadly’ and ‘no to bullying’, the protesters chanted, “Silence is not golden” as they marched.

Speaking to journalists, Tonto said women do not deserve to suffer domestic violence.

“You’re beautiful,” she said, addressing women.

“Love doesn’t hurt and love can be healed. Whatever you’re going through, you can heal. Speak up, get help.”

On her part, Mercy said violence does not solve anything.

“I actually say violence does not do anything. It does not solve the problem. So, it should not be an option. I’m here because I believe is a no, no. And because I am also a victim, I can relate, because of my experience, I know how it is. So, there is no shame in my pain. I am here to say no to violence. Enough is enough. Your wife is not your punching bag. You should stop beating your wife.”

The walk which was organised by Olori Wuraola Women Empopwerment Programme and House of Oduduwa Foundation started with hundreds of men and women under the Falomo Bridge, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Olori Wuraola advocated for the passage of a bill to protect women’s rights and ensure women are not abused again.

“We know there are a whole lot of good men out there but we want these men to emulate these good men,” Olori Wuraola said

“A woman that is kept in your care not just by her parents but by God almighty, it is your right, your responsibility to look after that woman. You violate her (and) you have failed in your duties and that means you are ungrateful to God.”

Also present was Nollywood Foluke Daramola Salako who has been outspoken about domestic violence, herself being a victim.

“If a man is beating you up, don’t be ashamed to speak out,” she said.

I still love you, Gentry begs Mercy Aigbe

Lanre Gentry, popular hotelier and estranged husband of Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe, has declared he still loves the actress despite their lingering matrimonial problems.

Gentry apologised to his wife, saying he’s tired of the lingering social media war of words between them.

Their rift, which has landed the couple in court, started when Mercy Aigbe moved out of her matrimonial home.

She accused her estranged husband of domestically abusing her for several years.

Despite the domestic abuse case being in court, the pair has traded series of accusations and counter-accusations on social media for the past couple of months.

Their hot exchange reached its climax during the week when the actress started reacting to all the claims made by her estranged husband.

But Gentry made a u-turn and publicly apologised to his wife on his Instagram page, saying he still loves the actress.

“Despite all that’s been happening; I don’t love you less. I still see you as the mother of my children and I want to give you the respect to that regard.

“Thanks to each and every one who’s preached peace; may God perfect all that is yours.

“God bless you and God will grant all your heart desires. Also to my family members and my children thanks for the unending love and support. God bless us all!!!! Amen,” he wrote.

Aigbe had claimed Gentry was begging her in private but “forming saint in public”.

She said: “Mr. Gentry keep denying because you need more lies. I have more than enough evidence, witnesses and your fate will be determined in the law court.

“Now you suddenly remember the kids? Now you suddenly remember you have a family name?

“When you were busy telling all those hideous lies against me, you forgot we have kids!

“When you were busy punching me, hitting me and almost killed me that day you forgot we had kids?

“In fact if you infuriate me any further I will put everything online including the undertaking you signed three years ago at the police station so the whole world sees you for who you are.

“I have protected you for too long. Keep it coming I am so ready for you. Never knew I was married to my enemy.”

Prior to that, she had posted a picture of her swollen eye, claiming it was from her estranged husband’s beatings.

Gentry, who is determined to mend fences with Aigbe, has reportedly met with family members of his estranged wife to end the feud between them and convince her to drop battery charges against him.
