MERCY AIGBE LEADS MARCH FOR NOLLYWOOD CELEBS IN SEARCH OF JUSTICE

RECENTLY, when actress, Mercy Aigbe sought justice for the violence she allegedly suffered in the hands of her estranged husband, Lanre Gentry, the news was greeted with mixed feelings. This is rightly so because most of the times, victims of domestic violence, perhaps out of the trauma they have been subjected to, prefer to just walk away, leaving all the bitterness behind.

That the Nigerian society has taken a firm stand against violence against women is not in doubt. For instance,  recently, when a soldier, Sulaiman Olamilekun, assaulted Nollywood actress, Ebere Ohakwe, aka Jewel Infinity, justice was swift.

The Nigerian Army was quick to sentence him to 28 days imprisonment with hard labour for battering the actress.

However, it is a different ball game when it comes to domestic violence. Although victims are beginning to find their voice, seeking justice still appears a mirage. Below are some of Nigerian actresses who claimed to have suffered physical abuse in the hands of their spouses but never sought for justice let alone getting one.

    ……………………………………..

    Katherine Obiang

Actress and TV presenter, Katherine Obiang was once married to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire host, Frank Edoho. The actress recounted her ordeal during the stormy years of her marriage; “Just to dare to argue with your husband is like a challenge in your home. The woman is challenging the man and tempers flay and then you snap, then there is a slap. He says ‘I am sorry it is a mistake’ then says ‘sorry I won’t do it again,’ then he does it again, again and again.”

    Monalisa Chinda

Monalisa Chinda is also an actress and TV host who was once married to Segun Dejo Richards. She has always spoken up against domestic violence ever since. In December, 2014, she lent her voice to the campaign against domestic violence at the Pearls Conference in Abuja. In a series of tweets, Monalisa revealed that she was once a victim of domestic violence. She also encouraged ladies to avoid abusive relationships.

“I was once a victim of domestic violence but survived and even stronger. So yes, you can. ‘I say NO to domestic violence and you should as well,” she tweeted.

    Chika Ike

When actress Chika Ike walked away from her marriage of five years, it was for various reasons. She was to later reveal that the deciding factor for her was a recurring incidence of physical abuse.

She said of the incidence; “It’s been really hard for me to come out straight and talk about this because sometimes, I pinch myself to wake up and not believe that I was a victim of domestic violence.

“I’ve been through a lot in my life, faced a lot of challenges but this is one topic I’ve tried so hard to avoid and have been waiting for the right time but I have come to a resolve that there’s really no right time because every second of the day, lives are being lost due to domestic violence.

“I was a victim of domestic violence in my marriage and that was the singular reason I left my marriage, aside other reasons.”

    Tonto Dikeh

In a no-holds-barred interview, controversial actress, Tonto Dikeh, recently opened the eyes of the world to the series of physical abuse she allegedly suffered in the hands of her husband, Churchill Oladunni.

The mother of one revealed that her estranged husband, Churchill, really humiliated her, claiming that the Nigerian Embassy in Ghana has nude photos and videos of her when she ran to them during one of their fights.

The actress also showed photographs of injuries she allegedly sustained in the hands of her husband.

    Georgina Onuoha

Georgina Onuoha is one vocal actress who has an opinion on almost any given topic. So it came as no surprise when she shared on Instagram the experience of a woman who claimed to have been molested, beaten and humiliated by her husband.

She also gave some marital advice; “I can imagine her state of mind and what she went through. I for one would have said this same prayers 6 years ago with so much hate in my heart and can count many others who will equally be saying same prayers. But grace, mercy and forgiveness surpass the pain of wickedness. I succumbed to God’s grace and strength.

“May God touch every soul going through pain, give them the grace to forgive and wish them well. Forgiveness is not for the other person, but rather for your own peace of mind and sanity. May God heal us all.”

    Ayo Adesanya

Beautiful actress, Ayo Adesanya describes her marriage to her former husband and actor, Goriola Hassan as a loving relationship which was fun until the beatings started and got worse.

In an interview on Moments with MO on Ebony TV, the actress talked about her domestic violence experience.

Recounting her experience, she said that she couldn’t let go because the same man touches her lovingly, caters to her needs and calls her baby. She describes the experience as confusing.

She also urged women to watch out for men who shove them here and there.

    Hadiza Adzay

Although she is not an entertainer, Hadiza Adzay, the estranged wife of musician Zaki Adzay, said that she suffered bouts of physical abuse during her union with the singer.

“He slapped me on the face so (and said) ‘get up you must abort this pregnancy today. Now that I am married to you, you want to hook me with pregnancy because I am a celebrity.’ Then there was a wardrobe in our room so I put my tummy in there and then he continued beating me. He had some folic acid in his hand and said I should swallow it and abort the pregnancy. When he gave me I said he should allow me take water, thank God the door was open so I ran away,” she recounted.

Mercy Aigbe: Fans show apathy despite CT scan result

Embattled Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe-Gentry, has called out her husband, Lanre Gentry, demanding answers to the alleged bashing she received from him.
Posting a shot of her CT scan result, which shows considerable damage to some of her organs, on Instagram, the actress suggested that her estranged husband, whose whereabouts still remains unknown, might be conniving with the police to quash the domestic abuse charges she leveled against him.
The post reads; “Why will a man who claims to love you, beat you to the extent of breaking your skull?………wat was my crime? @asiwajulanregentry you have to tell the world what my crime was?…… Now you are on the run!……. trying to connive with the police so I won’t get justice!!!!!!!…… lanre you can run but you can’t hide, you can tell all the LIES in this world but trust me at the end of it all the TRUTH will prevail and I will get Justice……. People keep saying I shouldn’t talk and that I should think of our child………. but you keep threatening to kill me, why I don’t know!!!!!!!!!!!….. Now that you are conniving with the police I don’t feel safe and I have to cry out!
“We were supposed to be in court this morning and you lied that you are on Admission and can’t be in court!
“@asiwajulanregentry you on admission? God you can never stop LYING……..then again I ask you why are you afraid to come to court?”
The CT Brain Scan result posted by the actress indicates that the actress has suffered a blowout fracture of the left orbit with hermiation of orbital fat, left maxillary sinus hermatoma, and incidental finding of bilateral basal ganglia calcification.
Although some of the actress’ fans have sympathized with her on the situation, there are those who have refused to show her any form of empathy.
Kareembabatunde01 for instance noted; “This was same man you praised some years back. Acclaiming he is the best and praising god for giving you this man. And I leant Lanre was even married then but yet you never mind. You saw love in him. So my dear. This is pure Domestic. True love is full of ups and down. It’s said to be a for better and for worst. So please call your man to a round table.
Spantched also opined; “Real story for the gods. She has been taking the beating since, apparently as her friend said, while she was pregnant with their child. Yet she came to social media praising the man, after sdk posted about them she did a video saying he has never beaten her. Does she realize denying it then nullifies her claims?”
Rozaypesci questions why the actress has chosen this moment to air her ordeal and urges the actress to “Go home, go to God on your knees, pray for your husband, take responsibility for your mistakes (I am sure you made some) and seek professional help. Don’t come here to call out your husband (Legally married to with kids) like one cheap criminal (you once or may still love him).

Mercy Aigbe’s marriage saga: We’ll pursue case to logical conclusion -Lagos Govt

The Lagos State Government has secured a restraining order for Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe from any further abuse by her husband, Lanre Gentry.

Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Lola Akande, and Coordinator of Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT), Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, who spoke with our reporter on Wednesday said the order henceforth prevents Mr. Gentry from getting close to his wife until further notice, assuring that the government would pursue the case to a logical conclusion.

Akande who commended the courage of Aigbe for voicing out her ordeal, urged other women going through similar situation to come out and voice out their plight.

“I must commend the courage of mercy, because what she did is what other women who are victims of domestic violence out there need to do, they don’t need to hide it except they want to die there.”

The visibly angry commissioner said it was so disheartening to see the state Aigbe was when she came to her office to report the case, “she was coughing blood from her nose and mouth and she had injury on her face which the doctor said she must have an operation.

“I was so angry that I needED to see the face of the man that did this to her, and so we invited him and he came yesterday (Tuesday) to say his own side of the story to the official in charge of domestic violence but any man that can beat a woman to a pulp like that to the extent that she is still coughing blood one week after the incident needs to have his head examined.

“I asked him what if they do something like this to your sister or even to your child how will you feel? He said she offended him, but is that why he must kill her? Can’t they settle scores like adults?” She asked.

She said the government has currently involved their legal team adding than soon, a legal action will be taken regarding the case.

Vivour-Adeniyi, on his part said Mr. Gentry may be charged for domestic violence, adding that he is also expected to appear in court in two weeks’ time to give reasons why the restraining order should not be made perpetual.

The DSVRT Coordinator said the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode was committed to stemming the tide of domestic violence, regardless of who the victim or the offender is, saying that Mercy Aigbe is yet another victim which would be treated according to the law.

She said, “We are actually working on the case with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), we are handling both civil and criminal. The criminal aspect of the domestic violence has been reported to the DPO of Area F and we accompanied her to the station with a view to charging the criminal aspect to court. So that is being handled.

“The civil aspect which is to ensure that she is protected, that is where the restraining order comes in, which is provided by the Prevention Against Domestic Violence Law 2007. So, we approached the family court and we got a restraining order on her behalf, restraining Mr. Gentry from I think one mile from her.

She said the Police was handling the criminal aspect of the case. “The police are investigating and they are supposed to charge him to court for prosecution”.

She urged other victims suffering domestic violence from abusive partners to approach a court to seek a restraining order, noting that the State Government through the DSVRT in most cases intervenes on behalf of a victim even when such is reported by an anonymous person.

“Don’t forget that domestic violence is a crime and a crime is committed against the state. So, the state can come in, conduct investigation and can actually approach the family court for a restraining order. The law actually encourages busy body to act on behalf of victims of domestic violence, knowing well that most times victims of domestic violence don’t want to come forward, so peradventure of the law, the State has the ability to approach the family court on behalf of the victim, just to ensure that the victim is safe.

“The restraining order is not necessarily to criminalise or to punish, but to protect, because don’t forget that most times even when the victim leaves the abusive relationship, if she is walking on the street, she is still hovering round and checking if anybody is following her or stalking her and most times the perpetrator might have threatened to kill her, so the restraining order is to protect her, her surroundings, her children if any or her properties, that is the main aim of the restraining order, it is so powerful but people don’t know that they can literally walk into the court and get that restraining order,” Vivour-Adeniyi explained.

With civil and criminal actions being instituted against Lanre Gentry, estranged husband of Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe, there are indications of a tough time ahead for the hotelier who, on Tuesday, was quizzed by the Lagos State department of Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT).

Mercy Aigbe bounces back after domestic violence fiasco

Popular Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe Gentry who was recently beaten by her husband, seems to have bounced back.

The mother of three whose battered face was published across the internet on Friday took to her Instagram to once again campaign against domestic violence just after she posted a brand new picture of herself.

“Over to you Jehovah!” she wrote.

“My dress of course from @mag_divas. Off to the shop!……. Expecting you guys, don’t forget special discount on today’s purchases. Happy new Month Fam”

This is a departure from news which broke on Friday of the domestic violence she suffered from her husband.

According to a radiology report purportedly issued by the St. Solomon Health Care Limited and posted online by an online publication, Mercy had a CT scan which confirmed that she did have a fracture following her claims of domestic violence meted out on her by her husband.

Meanwhile, Mercy’s husband, Lanre Gentry, who owns La Veronique hotel, Oregun, Lagos, has denied that he beat Mercy, saying he did not lay a finger on his wife as he loves her.

However, an Instagram user, Tibeju Olatunde, with the handle, iamolaandrew, hinted that contrary to Mercy’s claim that she is the second wife of Lanre Gentry, she is the fourth woman to have achild for the American returnee.

“How can she be the second wife when she is the fourth to bear children for him?” iamolaandrew asked.

“He has children from different women and when Mercy had Juwon, Lanre called all his baby mamas that they should bring all his children to come and live under same roof with one another in his house but those women declined.”

But the user corroborated that it is Lanre’s recent involvement with a lady called Opemititi that has disrupted the couple’s marriage.

“One of the reasons that caused fracas in his marriage to Mercy was infidelity from his part,” iamolaandrew wrote.

“It was gathered and alleged that Lanre was dating Opemititi, a young lady, who lives in Abeokuta but comes to Lagos regularly. The lady also known as “Queen Stunner” was said to be very close to Mercy and visited her at home. There are allegations that the estranged husband of Mercy is having an affair with Opemititi. For now, Mercy is said to have been separated from Lanre and moved out of the home.”
